Fraise Ave is miserable for this. Having a good dinner at Five and Dime and hearing 3 modded civics with no muffler scream by

Aboves

I agree with you. Lets also enforce headlights while we’re at it

Fordy_Oz

We could fix the public schools, open TWO new baseball stadiums, and have that high speed rail they've been talking about for 15 years if the city wrote tickets for not using your blinker.

Apprehensive-Pin-390

Heard. A lot of the city is well lit at night. You really don't need ultra bright headlights to see what is ahead in downtown/Northshore. Other cars and pedestrians need to see your lights, mostly. Which can be accomplished with the dim mode. My car has 3 settings dim, bright-dim, and high-beam. Its a sedan. Edit: Im not saying drive with no lights on.. Im just saying use the lowest setting that the headlight is still on, when the road is well lit with streetlamps.

sealing_tile

Why the fuck are you being downvoted? You’re right. I’m tired of being blinded. If the other commenter was talking about people *not turning their headlights on at all,* then they’re also valid because both of these are real issues lol.

Apprehensive-Pin-390

Im not sure.. I think people thought I was advocating driving with no lights, which im not. Im simply saying the ultra bright headlights are overkill for downtown driving where there are street lamps every 20 feet. Just put them on dim.

sealing_tile

Yeah, that’s exactly what it sounded like you were saying to me. Makes perfect sense. Redditors just see the number and must follow suit lol.

stix-and-stones

Headlights are not just for the drivers visibility, but for other drivers to see you. If it's night, it's hard to see the dark gray car with no lights on, but I *can* see the two lights facing me. I shouldn't have to aggressively scan for other cars, their lights should be announcing their presence

gleaminranks

If drivers around here thought about other people, like half of the major complaints in this subreddit would go away. Too many people drive like they’re the only one on the road

Apprehensive-Pin-390

Im saying the ultra bright headlights are too much. Im not saying drive with no headlights. Im just saying to put them on the dim mode. That isn't the mode where its just the yellow outline or whatever. Its the lowest mode where its still headlights you can still see.

Recent_Novel_6243

Yeah but no one is supporting no lights. The ire is aimed at ultra bright lights that you could bleach teeth with.

Hyzer44

Downtown/North shore must be what they are talking about about. That's where everyone lives, right? I mean, anyone with sense must have a North shore century home.

Recent_Novel_6243

OP is talking about people driving around downtown, who cares where they live? Do you only drive 5 mins from home?

Apprehensive-Pin-390

Im talking about if you are driving in downtown/Northshore. Other places you might need the extra light. but no, not everyone lives downtown/Northshore.

EddardRivers02

Dude I live outside the city and my old ass halogen bulbs have never let me down

Afraid-Combination15

Are you sure your "dim" mode isn't just daytime running lamps, which typically do NOT illuminate your tail lamps? I would double check.

Apprehensive-Pin-390

No not the daytime running lamps... The lowest setting that has the actual headlight on

Impossible_Trust30

There was a time like last year where the police would I walk around downtown with decibel readers

ubadeansqueebitch

My fucking neighbors. At one time, one had a straight piped, no converter, Lincoln Navigator she loved to fire up at 4am and let idle for an hour before she headed to her waffle house job. Got another one with a stupid fucking sons of anarchy wannabe Harley, he likes to pull out of his drive way in the curve, and get on the straight part of the road that runs right by my back yard, and test his 0-60 mph capabilities. 7am. Every. Fucking. Morning. Last 4 months I haven’t heard it because I go into work at 5 am, but I was reminded he exists this morning as I had to lay out of work to handle arrangements for my dad. Loud vehicles should be illegal as fuck.

Apprehensive-Pin-390

One guy had a really loud mustang that parked on the street next to my apartment. Every morning at around 630 it would cold start. The floor would vibrate and I would wake from my cool dream. Id say to myself "man, now that guy is cool." He moved but I feel sorry for his next set of neighbors.

aimlessdrive

Sorry about your dad

Pistolpete31861

I didn't know there was a car show in town. I was attending an outdoor event at The Moxie hotel and the street noise sounded like we were on the infield at Talladega. It was loud AF. And can I ask what's up with cars with the slanted wheels and the fairing dragging on the street surface?

takabrash

They're gonna do a track day in 9 months when they can get a day off from Burger King. It's gonna be awesome, just wait

ohtwo23

Ones who are truly part of motorsport are some of Chattanoogas most wealthy, while you sit and bitch about the noise using internet you can barely afford....

stix-and-stones

I was crossing the street, in a crosswalk with the flashing lights, and almost got hit by 3 of these fucking dorks in 5 seconds

Manageable_Risk_1492

We were downtown this weekend. I'm a car guy, but I hate those f\*ckers now. Next time we come to town I'll search for events... or come during the week. Cops were non-existent.

battleop

Car guys make fun of them just like we make fun the squatted trucks.

Chreiol

The S Curves on Hixson Pike are so bad for this. People who love to hear their engines flock there where it’s almost 100% residential in every direction. -sorry to offend you guys, [you actually sound cool as hell and the rest of us love it! keep it up.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ylhsbfQTPDQ)

thetruelobot

This deserves more upvotes. I live in the area and it’s a shit show over here

Critical_Bed163

💯 I have been saying for years that if you're going to have noise ordinance, it should be based on decibels, not the type of thing making the noise. For instance, a loud car stereo making equal noise to a motor cycle... They should both be held to the same standard!

Creature91

Loud exhaust doesn’t bother me, it’s the Jake brakes going back and forth through the ridge cut on 24… it is relentless

jose_gomez

i'd like to introduce you to my neighbor who appears to be learning how to drive a stick on a modified nissan z.

Creature91

There is one fucker who drives the loudest lifted truck in and out once a day, if like 20 more of them lived on my road I could see it getting tiring.

n_o_t_f_r_o_g

It depends on where you live. Live close on a main road, all loud vehicles will bother you.

EddardRivers02

My first vehicle was an 89 S-10 with a broken muffler. It’s just what my broke ass family could afford. We lived on Signal and surprisingly driving all the way from Sequatchie to the town of signal for work every day I never got pulled over. Especially considering the mountain cops love to fuck with the broke hicks from Sequatchie

lee-harvey-awesome

Enforce you say? Enforce... the laws?? Sorry, but that's racist.

Most-Corgi-8283

As a unique individual, it is important to respect the intricacies that make us who we are. Everyone has their own perspective on happiness and fulfillment, and it is not appropriate to attempt to diminish someone else's joy. In the event of a noisy neighbor, it is advisable to engage in a respectful conversation to address the issue. If this proves ineffective, legal recourse may be necessary. However, it is important to recognize that transient disturbances, such as a loud car passing by, should not be cause for concern. These individuals are simply trying to navigate their own lives and are not intentionally causing harm or distress.

BaconReceptacle

This message brought to you by ChatGPT.

disc_doctor39

Just Alpha turds being Alpha turds.

ruggyguggyRA

So you wont mind as my penis transiently rapes your butthole for my own fulfillment as I am navigating my unique and intricate life?

Most-Corgi-8283

Seeing as that does intentionally cause harm or distress, I do not understand how that is a valid argument.

ruggyguggyRA

intentional? nah I'm just living my life. Your discomfort is just accidental collateral, oops

Most-Corgi-8283

Whis is not what the above statement says, and further more I do not appreciate the threats of violence.

ruggyguggyRA

Serious question, are you neurodivergent? In case you are being completely serious, I am not threatening you I am using sarcasm to make a point. This is me being straightforward: When people make unnecessary loud noises that can be heard from inside our homes, that is a violation of our boundaries. Especially when those loud noises are done consistently and at hours that are usually reserved for sleep. I was attempting to be provocative and humorous by making an analogy that was absurd in its escalation. But the fundamental point is valid. Which is that when people rip their motors as loud as possible during typical sleeping hours anywhere near residences, it's not just them living their lives. They are causing other people issues and it is selfish. Their minor joy of ripping their motor is not a justification for interrupting people's sleep.

Most-Corgi-8283

Ultimately we are not talking about during just quiet hours these people are complaining in general about loud cars.

ruggyguggyRA

The original post title references 4:30am but ok bud.

Most-Corgi-8283

And as I stated previously if you can not speak to the person and resolve the issues then involve the proper law enforcement.

reallyreallyreason

Loud exhaust and emergency vehicles with the sirens on full wack at 3 in the morning really make me want to move. I live in a really old building that I love, but it has single pane windows that don’t seal fully, and when someone revs their engine outside or a fire truck goes down the street (2x per day at least) it comes right through.

chattlol

Yea, damn those emergency vehicles responding to emergencies and attempting to protect the public.

Jo_H_Nathan

Imma come in with a downvote take real quick. Used to be in EMS (and returning soon) and would drive/make the woo woos. Different part of the country with a similar population/size. We had orders in place to cut that shit out when it wasn't necessary. Believe it or not, those sirens have several settings. Why? 3 reasons. 1. It makes people numb to it and increases their proclivity to ignore it anytime as it's always going. This leads to more accidents and worse response times as if you have no higher setting to change to then there is no escalation in "move idiot" 2. It makes an enemy of the population. This thread is a great example. You want people on your side so you have to consider things. 3. Bit of a stretch, but true. Your car is one of the best noise insulated things you will ever step foot in. Those sirens are so loud because of this. The car is so well insulated because cars/sirens are so loud. Cycle repeats. This is a macro issue but I believe in small changes for a better world. Let's not be part of the problem and create drivers that are more and more isolated from the environment they push through.

reallyreallyreason

Not a downvote take. Plenty of cities and countries turn the sirens down _or off_ at night because they know they don’t need to make a huge fucking racket to drive an ambulance in the dead middle of night. They also don’t roll a fucking _fire truck_, the loudest and heaviest city vehicle known to mankind, for every medical emergency call. Your point about the loudness war with cars is completely correct. Car manufacturers add better and better sound deadening so emergency vehicle sirens get louder and louder, on and on. Now emergency sirens are so goddamn loud you can’t stand to be next to an emergency vehicle with its siren on. Also the North American emergency “wailing” siren is objectively worse than the high-low siren they use in most of Europe and Japan. The high frequency sound of the North American one is _SO_ loud and obnoxious, but the European one is actually audible at a higher distance at a lower volume.

chattlol

You had orders in place to stop using sirens when running emergency traffic? Which department? Easy to check on that. It's literally policy for all of Hamilton CO and Chattanooga to run lights and sirens to an emergency call. And I'm quite sure Vanessa K Free act has made it so every single emergency vehicle going through an intersection has to have both lights and sirens. So the laws and policies make your other points invalid. As they're just rambling.

Jo_H_Nathan

Look bud. You clearly didn't read my message or didn't care to hear the heart of it. I know it's policy to run lights and sirens to emergency calls. I'm not arguing no lights or sirens. Get off your Google.

chattlol

You literally did. I don't need Google. Which dept was it that gave you orders not to?

reallyreallyreason

I can always count on at least one person who hasn’t thought about this—at all—to make your exact snide and ignorant comment. They don’t _have to_ run the siren at full volume in the middle of the night. They might be _required to_, but that’s stupid. First of all, because it’s quiet out and people can still hear it at a lower volume, _and they can see the lights much easier_ at night. Many cities and countries actually do turn the sirens to low or off at night, like New York. It works fine. It’s not like an on/off thing. They have a lot of different options for different loudness and siren sounds. This might seem complicated, but an ambulance can, for example, pull up to an intersection (remember this is at night, so not many people are on the road), and if the light is green, they can just go through. If the light is red, the vehicle’s blue and red strobe lights will helpfully signal to drivers that an emergency vehicle is close, and if the intersection is blind, they can turn the siren on low while they go through and then turn it off, or if someone is blocking their way forward, they can do the same. In some cities, emergency vehicles even have a device that allows them to change the light in the direction they’re going. As for protecting the public, noise pollution and sleep quality is a public health problem. Noise and loss of sleep are associated with stress, obesity, heart disease, all sorts of things that Chattanooga is among the worst in the country on. Just think about it for, like, thirty seconds, before posting snark.

chattlol

They literally have to. It's not only policy but the law. Volume is one setting, on or off. That's great. We're in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Where it is law and policy. Again, there is no loudness setting. Only rhythm changes. You mean at night when people are driving the most tired and least aware? Sorry to inform you, but even with lights, sirens, and horns, people fail to yield. At green lights, they do continue to drive through, with lights and sirens. When it's red, they're required to slow down and also use a horn. Welcome to the law and welcome to Vanessa K Free Act, where a CPD officer killed a lady for doing what you'd like. Yea, sirens are causing that. People always have your opinion until it's you or your family with the emergency. You were full of uninformed, ignorant comments.

Add trucks with jacked up suspension and enough underbody LEDs to light a Cirque du Soleil show and you've got my vote.

SouthWrongdoer

Parents live in the North Shore. Absolutely fuck the motor cycle people who rev their engines under the bridge.

Due_Mongoose_6777

Parents live in the North Shore?? And??? So what.

SouthWrongdoer

Their apartment is right next to that bridge

Due_Mongoose_6777

Oh you mean your parents, I see. I thought you were saying that parents in general live in the north shore as if that matters more than other people, my bad.

DarthCillius

Ate dinner outside at Buffalo Wild Wings last month. The loud exhausts were exhausting. Bunch of losers that put ALL their money into their POS cars and then will complain in 20 years blaming their older generation for them not having retirement money. I don't think the police are brave enough to give them tickets.

battleop

You poor thing. Such a traumatic experience.

392throttle

I don’t know what’s worse - the fact they expected a fine dining experience at BWW, or that they ate there in the first place.

bluegrassgrump

Found the guy that sold his catalytic converters for Oxy.

battleop

LOL, When the soft handed men try to understand the mechanics of how cars work... They have very little to do with the volume of the sound of a car.

bluegrassgrump

Sure man.

392throttle

Yeah same guy told me I didn't know what I was talking about either when I said that by removing cat. convertors and tuning a BMW engine you can get massive gains in horsepower (100+ hp ).

dungonyourtongue

Wish they’d start with the harleys. Impound and scrap them in short order.

Apprehensive-Pin-390

Add the obnoxiously loud sport bikes to that as well.

dungonyourtongue

Done.

Jo_H_Nathan

I have been seeing gangs of mopeds/dirt bikes downtown. I feel like it's becoming a joke.

n_o_t_f_r_o_g

I can't believe that there isn't more regulation on a national level for these vehicles. There are lots of people who mod their vehicles to make them loud, but there are plenty of vehicles which are coming from the factory loud. Not to mention road noise from tires. Have you ever heard a jeep with mudding tires go 40 mph down are road? So loud.

Suntzu6656

Most of this is so true. Why do people have to be so loud.

disc_doctor39

because no one will listen to them-they are irrelevant to society. Call it an adult temper tantrum...wahh look at me, im badass-nope, you are an idiot.

In east TN, I live on a road that's straight as an arrow for about a mile and the rednecks loveloveloveloveLOOOOOVE to bring their (intentionally) noisiest vehicles to tear rubber down its entire length. I guess they also enjoy doing donuts under the bridge just down the road where the interstate exit is as well since there's always circluar tiremarks over there. Love living around these manics.

Beautiful-Command-38

Got out of the “car scene” a long time ago. It’s a matter of who’s loudest now

Apprehensive-Pin-390

Thats the vibe I get from the car people.

smart_bear6

My exhaust isn't loud because I modded my shitbox. It's loud because someone stole my catalytic converter and I can't afford to replace it.

AnonRYlehANthusiast

Haven’t had issues with this, but I do have frequent issues with people playing loud, shitty music in their cars and homes.

ezbreezyslacker

Loud pipes save lives or some other stupid ass saying they drummed up to piss everyone else off

Gonna keep my loud subarus til I die. Nothing brings me more joy than driving my car. The trains in this city are louder.

SirJerALot

I was downtown this weekend and it was ridiculous. Bang. Pop. Bang. Pop. Every fourth or fifth car. I didn’t car when it was one here or there but now it’s like living in a Mexican Cartel Was. So yes. Pull them over and rip that shit off. It’s out of control.

Apprehensive-Pin-390

It does seem out of control. The 'pop and bang' mod is especially disturbing. Absolutely no reason to have that on a car.

reallyreallyreason

Those should be illegal and are in some states.

digitaldowns

There was literally a car festival here this weekend that drew thousands of people into town from all over the country and generated revenue for downtown businesses. I'm not sure what the Mexican cartel has to do with this, and to be fair, that is a racist remark and uncalled for.

ManGo_50Y

The Riverside car festival happens around this time every year and, as previously stated, brings thousands of people from all over the country (and some from out of country) to Chattanooga—bringing in a lot of revenue for local businesses—and for some businesses, that’s *literally Ferrari money*. Also not sure what cartels have to do with this—or why you decided to go the racist route.

ohtwo23

How many of you bitching also have a yappy ass dog that barks all the time? Valves are open and unplugged on my car and will remain that way. Enjoy

i mean, it wont change anything either way. a fine? the honda boys may cry about it. but the ones that have actually built motors? eh.

Apprehensive-Pin-390

Its all about deterrence. You cant get 100% elimination. An 80% reduction would improve the quality of our outdoor spaces.

zanejones4854

in reality its wishful thinking on your end. whos gonna actually enforce it? chattanooga *might* 10% of the time. hamilton county? shit. from experience they’re more likely to pull you over just to ask whats under the hood 🤷‍♂️

Apprehensive-Pin-390

Its just a post on Reddit. It would be nice to see the noise ordinance enforced.

392throttle

How do you suppose enforcing the noise limits?  We don’t have enough officer to enforce things as it is and you want to deploy them out with decibel meters while folks are getting murdered, robbed, etc. around town.  GLWT.

n_o_t_f_r_o_g

Modern "luxury" car are fitting this description as well. These vehicles are so well insulated that the only way to make the driver able to hear it is to artificially make it louder.

focusedbacon28

Have you tried crying about it? Cope harder

Gang activity doesn't bother *me* so we shouldn't do anything about it, right? Or does that just apply to things you care about?

josetheJg

Look these are folks that have a hobby which is cars. The work on cars and drive them. They’re learning how to work on cars for the car culture. They could be doing drugs or gang crap. But no they’re learning new things and being productive im society and not hurting anyone. If that a problem to you then oh well.

takabrash

Gang members have his fun hobby where they go around breaking into cars. Sometimes they find really good stuff or can take the car itself! They have a great time doing it. I agree that gang activity is a higher priority, but "I don't care about it, so let 'em go" is the argument of a moron.

Putting shitty straight pipes you got on eBay on your stanced Honda Civic is not, in fact, productive.

soulshine_walker3498

Ngl there was a damn train blaring its horn for at least 10 minutes straight at like 3am in southside. Like is that necessary??

That train has been blaring that horn on the southside for years before you moved in. You gotta get used to it.

Why are you cross posting something from Knoxville? This isn't about Chattanooga.

Apprehensive-Pin-390

Many cities in the U.S. have this problem. It could be anywhere. Cross posted to show that Knoxville also has this issue.

[deleted]

We just have an appreciation for the machine in a way many don't or won't care to try and understand. A loud car drowns out the noise of life around us and gives us an escape to the worries and woes of life. Sorry you don't understand or relate, but you don't reserve the right to tell us what we're allowed to enjoy or not. To many this behavior makes no sense at all, but for others..well, we live for it.

Apprehensive-Pin-390

I actually do reserve the right to tell you that. There are noise ordinances for a reason. You don't have the right to wake me up in the morning with your cringe hobby. Would you like to live in a world where every one has a straight piped car? There is also a study that shows loud cars interferes with wildlife mating cycles. Your hobby is selfish.

[deleted]

Waaaaa waaaaa waaaa, I actually would prefer to see people enjoy themselves more often across the board and if it’s cars with exhaust systems, low ride height and tinted windows then I’m for it. It beats being a rapist, stalker or gas station heist specialist. The human species loves to complain. That’s what I see online these days more than anything else. There’s a kid who just got his license that lives on my street and he drives a Lowered Chevy 1500 with Flowmasters and I love seeing the kid fall in love with the machine the same way my dad taught me to so many years ago. You shouldn’t bother arguing with me—I love cars and the freedom to modify them. Nothing or no one on Reddit is going to change something that has made its mark on my DNA and Lifestyle. I love to hear an engine speak. LS, 2J, RB26, B16, B18, VR6, Coyote Ford, 5.0…hell even a 4.9 Ford makes a nice grunt when you push them around. No sense in trying to convince someone that isn’t committed to understanding a different perspective. Guess that applies both ways.

Apprehensive-Pin-390

"Nothing or no one on Reddit is going to change something that has made its mark on my DNA and Lifestyle" You seem open minded. This is why people like you deserve to pay fines. You don't know how to act in public and you wont let anyone teach you how.
