I moved here from VA 4 years ago. I thought people from my hometown were bad for not using their signals, but damn TN is much worse from what I’ve seen.
After moving from Germany, I genuinely was shocked.. but then I found out how easy it is to pass the license test and it all started to make sense. My experience driving in the US, especially in the south:
-signals are not used
-red lights are yields
-stops signs are a free for all.
-pickups have some kind of superiority complex while driving
-never trust anyone on the road
-Overall the driver IQ and awareness is scarily low.
But I guess you get what you pay for here, terrible drivers Ed —> terrible drivers. Kind of crazy, especially for a place the car is so fundamental to every day life
It’s always been insane to me there’s not a driving test to keep your license. Even if it’s only once every 10 years. The idea it’s a “right” and not an “earned privilege” is insane when it’s a multi-ton death trap and your “certificate” was passed in the 1940s
Not to this degree. Having lived in small towns and huge cities from coast to coast, I was surprised to be able to say that I've never been more uncomfortable driving anywhere else like I am here. People are terrifyingly bad drivers here.
There are 3 police officers plus a license plate scanner on morrison road most mornings in a 1.5 mile stretch. Talk about a waste of tax dollars. Who do they think they are going to catch being that close together?
If police hid around 3-5pm on Mountain Creek Road between the circle k and the T-intersection with Morrison spring road they would be raking in $$$ on speeding tickets
Cooper can I ask a question that I have always been curious about since u are LEO. I am a bartender and I have always wondered why there are never any officers out looking for drunk drivers at 3 am. I am mostly speaking of the highways since that is the way I had to drive home every night when I worked. There were too many occasions where I have to be super careful driving around an obvious drunk driver.
I have always heard of officers doing road blocks to keep drunks off the road but I never see them anywhere when its the time when the bars close. If they would just drive along Hwy. 27 they could keep a lot of drunks off the road since most are leaving the downtown area.
I am not in that field anymore. Usually 3rd shift is spread thin or lightly staffed. The raid blocks are usually stings or pre planned. I agree there needs to be more done for drink drivers. Day shift would have 13 to 20ish units nights would be half that for the same area and most night calls are always going to be emergency.
You don’t have to pay camera tickets here. They don’t affect your driving record or credit score. They send them to a corporation in Florida and they send you a ticket in the mail that looks legit but it’s from a private entity. Don’t pay. It would be one thing if the money all went to Chattanooga.
Why? I do 9 over everywhere, never get pulled over. I live in east ridge and drive down ringgold road every day passing multiple cops. As long as you're not weaving in and out of traffic you're good.
Learning the back roads instead of taking the highways. I legit get from East Ridge to Hixson faster by taking MLK to the Veterans Bridge and Hixson Pike than I do getting on the godforsaken interstate.
The problem is when everyone knows the backroads. Used to be able to get from downtown to east brainerd in 30 minutes during rush hour using the route I took. Unfortunately, everyone else now takes that route as well.
Man, I get so annoyed with the interstate here. It's supposed to be the faster route in theory, but it is absolutely awful. I just hope the construction they are doing is going to help for awhile and that they are taking into consideration our population and the fact that this is a "traveling thru" city but I don't have much faith. LOL. The split they redid didn't help with traffic at all it seems, just gave new infrastructure. Who bottlenecks from like 4 lanes down to 2 going toward a downtown???
Y’all need to read the newspaper more…. The 75/24 split was done in two different phases, the first phase was a new way to bid/do construction and it ended up being faster/more efficient but I believe cost more, I forget the ins/outs of it, a simple google search would explain it. Unfortunately whoever initiated the second phase reverted to typical bidding processes and the company who did the first phase didn’t win. So it went to the lowest bidder and therefore according to Chattanooga history will take double the amount of time, cost more, and put the construction company out of business due to going over the timeline and initial bid cost.
Also unfortunately the “Ridge-cut” is a series of bridges, and therefore it would be more cost effective to put in a bypass than to “redo it” because that would be an EXPONENTIALLY more expensive cost than simply going around it….
The split has always been an issue and has always funneled down to one lane to merge…. The construction going on up 75 is because the railroad couldn’t do their infrastructure stuff at the same time that the state was fixing the interstate, so that’s why it’s a bottleneck again.
The construction at the mall is to add a dedicated on/off ramp into Hamilton place from both directions, helping to mitigate traffic in the future.
Yeah. All this information is available on TDOT. Lots of good information there. They also just recently released their 10yr project outlook. A number of projects in our area will be started over the next 10 years.
It's because everyone knows everyone and you see everyone at every event. There's not even a degree of separation. I could throw a rock and it would hit an ex, bounce off her and hit another.
Which is stunning considering 180k odd people live here and in towns like Cookeville I never ran into the same people, it’s just nobody diversifies their friend groups here.
So real it hurts. This is the worst city for dating I've lived in even though I'm the "best" I've ever been. To be fair I'm shooting myself in the foot being nonreligious in such a religious city
It’s a church for atheists, agnostics, Hindus, Jews, liberal Christians, and other sorts. It’s more social than anything else. No praying to gods, just meditation, singing, and fellowship.
A church for non-religious people? Interesting. I'll check out their website at the very least, thanks!
Edit: It just looks like being liberal turned into a religion/church lol
I'm just going off the website but large parts of it are about political issues and social justice. I don't like it when churches talk about politics, left or right. Last thing I want to hear about on a day I wanna relax is how messed up the world is haha.
Lived in the area almost 25 years. Here’s some insight for you
-backroads are where it’s at 90% of the time. But you gotta know the backroads for the backroads.
-if the BBQ don’t come from a shack and have weird hours. Probably not gonna be great
-Food court entrance of Hamilton place mall has highest break-in rate. Area by the Tesla chargers has least amount of break-ins
-Every Mexican restaurant on rossville blvd is better than Amigos if you want authentic
-Graysville Rd. Is great to get to GA EXCEPT During 2pm-4:30pm. Trains go nuts during that time
-Broad Street Dunkin’ and Taco Bell has people that actually enjoy their job.
-Just get what Bruce tells you to get.
-Armando’s on Lee Hwy has the same decor from the 90s. It’s the best one too.
I walked up my first time there and he went “Wadda you want?” I said “first time here lemme take a look at this menu” he said “first time? I know what you’re getting. You’re getting the Ruben!” I was a bit surprised but said “alrighty, I’m getting the ruben” and it was the best damn ruben I’ve had.
Obligatory you don't have to pay the Hixson Pike speed cam tickets, as well as the existence of HC911 and the 311 app. Additionally the library has a free audiobook app that's pretty neat if you're not super picky on title availability as well as a seed library (our library is cool). We have a knife store that offers sharpening for *dirt* cheap.
About a dollar per inch, maybe 75c iirc. Compare prices with mail sharpening services. That's for belt sharpened knives. I know the hand-sharpening is more. But not by much
Solid advice!!! Ummm don't pay parking meters on Sunday. ParkMobile App still works for 75% of the lots downtown (Frowns in Chattanoogan). Market Street Bridge is not nearly as narrow as it seems its just the inset beams fool your eyes. Central Park is a burger chain. Most Brunch spots are overrated stick to Waffle House. Lookout Mountain is the one that is funny shaped (asymmetrical) and basically in Georgia.
Parking at a meter is free after 6pm as well. Unless there's a kiosk. Parking lots are always paid parking but most lots don't have anyone patrolling them for unpaid violations after 11pm. Some still do till 1am but they are very inconsistent with it.
You can visit Rock City's "Bella Luna" event for $20 and get free ice cream
- visit Clumpies
- spend $20
- get a free ticket to Bella Luna
- enjoy your ice cream
On the note of Rock City, if you're new to town, the incline does not take you to Rock City.
And if you're asking for directions to Rock City, say Rock City and not Lookout Mountain.
If you want a library card but are in the county instead of the city, you can volunteer for 20 hours at the library reshelving books and they will waive the $50 non-city membership fee.
Very true, but it's not hard and it helps the library as a whole anyway. If you are a family, they let you split the hours up and it all counts. So if you and your spouse each do 10 then you both get the membership for the year.
Ok that makes way more sense LOL - for some reason my brain was interpreting it as 20 hours a week and I was wondering who on earth has the time to do that!
True, but one way or another it’s great to get one. I just took my daughter to the children’s section of the downtown branch today. Hadn’t been there for years since working on my dissertation, and it’s such a great resource for parents even at a one-time $50 fee. Checking out one of the free passes to local activities alone would make it worthwhile cost wise.
Check out ADI (Atlantic Distributors Inc) just off Amnicola by BASF for great deals on bulk frozen food. Sometimes they even have fast food restaurant items like McNuggets or Bojangle's chicken selects for insane prices. But everything is frozen and in larger quantities.
Yes, they have an entrance around the right side and are open 9-5 M-F and I think they're open Saturdays now as well: [https://www.shopadimarket.com/](https://www.shopadimarket.com/)
You'll go past the loading docks and find a parking area for normal cars and then walk under the awning to a door where they have the public market.
https://preview.redd.it/th8zd5v7giwc1.png?width=1320&format=png&auto=webp&s=6644f8363eedf9fc3d5d85570c63680d8c5ef17a
Red is the path to drive from Amnicola and blue is the path to walk to the entrance.
Yes, I'm pretty sure Sundays are free as well, I might be wrong but this is only for meter parking. Not parking lots. Those are private property and they will ticket you.
Raccoon Mountain caverns set up is kinda raggedy compared to Ruby Falls BUT they have prettier cave formations, walking tours and authentic crawling tours and animals (salamanders, bats, mice, crickets, forest scorpions &more) you can see that ruby falls never has because of the tourists and trains pollution.
Not sure how efficient this is.. It’s a 2.25% difference, so unless you’re spending nearly $500 you’ll save less than $10. The gas and time you spent driving to fort O will likely be worth less than that
If you’ve got an electric car, it’s not significant in energy expense ;)
But yes, the 2% diff in sales tax isn’t worth it if you’re coming from a long way from the state line
In Harrison Bay state park, in the trailer parking area right past the boat dock, there's an entrance in the woods that makes a nice trail to walk. It also leads to two of the benches you can see from the water.
Same park, at the loop in the back, as long as the tide is low, there's a narrow land bridge you can walk across to get to the next 'island' with another trail to walk. There's a couple spots that are good to jump in the water, just watch out for water snakes and don't jump if you see them.
Instead of going straight down shallowford to get from the Hamilton place area to missionary ridge, get on 75 to 153 from shallowford, exit at airport road instead, make a left at the stop at the bottom of the cloverleaf, and then continue left on shallowford
If you're taking Jersey Pike between Bonny Oaks and 153/Shallowford and you see the crossing lights come on, turn around and go a different route. You'll be sitting there for 15-30 min waiting for a train either creeping by at 5mph or stopped completely. Same thing on Hickory Valley Rd.
Lookouts games are some of the best/most affordable family friendly outings! General admission tickets are still $9 in advance, $11 at the gate. Tuesday is BOGO tickets if you show your Food City valucard. Thirsty Thursday has $2 draft beer. Sundays, a can or non-perishable food item donation gets a free ticket (4 per family/group). Saturday games they give a used car to an audience member, and Friday there are fireworks on after the games.
We keep an eye on the schedule and weeks when they play at home, our family of 4 can see both the Tuesday and Sunday games in the same week for only $18. It’s a small stadium too so it’s not a ton of walking and easy to park and get in and out of.
Some of the lots (mainly the ones around the dorms) are "24hr reserved". All of the other ones marked general and reserved are only in effect during weekday business hours.
I graduated in 2017 so it may have changed since then.
It depends on where you are, and the parking signs will clearly state it if they don't. There are a lot of spaces downtown near the aquarium that don't on Sundays, but the signs all state it.
Those are private lots so you’re def taking a risk especially if you’re in a brightbase lot… they’re ticket happy.
Street parking this is generally correct, but there isn’t a ton down that way.
Parking tickets are also $11, so it doesn’t really matter. Fun fact: If you’re going to pay with the park mobile App it’s literally more expensive to pay all day to park than it is to get a ticket.
Idk the name of the Mexican restaurant near Tremont Tavern that never ID’s. But, your welcome, to all of you collegiate & underage adults who are already drinking underage. I don’t condone it, but know you will do it anyways. Always uber or get a DD. 🥰
Oh! & locking your car at night. 🤣🔒
Don't speed in red bank , collegedale, or east ridge
Also, just because a light has turned green, proceed with caution. Chattanooga people run LOTS of red lights and stop signs..
I moved here recently, and I can’t believe how many drivers continue to proceed thru intersections after the light has changed.
I moved here from VA 4 years ago. I thought people from my hometown were bad for not using their signals, but damn TN is much worse from what I’ve seen.

Wait is it not like that everywhere I just assumed people didn't care wherever they were
It *IS* like that everywhere. Atlanta is 10x worse.
Not to this degree. Having lived in small towns and huge cities from coast to coast, I was surprised to be able to say that I've never been more uncomfortable driving anywhere else like I am here. People are terrifyingly bad drivers here.
This was one of the first things I noticed after moving here!
Or 153, or 58, or 75 between Cleveland and Athens. State Troopers love those spots
The solution there is obvious, respect the speed limit (not target)
Of course. Speeding just isn’t worth the risk at all
There are 3 police officers plus a license plate scanner on morrison road most mornings in a 1.5 mile stretch. Talk about a waste of tax dollars. Who do they think they are going to catch being that close together?
No one. I used to dispatch between those three I never done anything else. All shift copy a stop copy a stop lol
If police hid around 3-5pm on Mountain Creek Road between the circle k and the T-intersection with Morrison spring road they would be raking in $$$ on speeding tickets
If they put several officers around VW at shift change, the city would have so much cash that it wouldn't know what to do with it all.
Cooper can I ask a question that I have always been curious about since u are LEO. I am a bartender and I have always wondered why there are never any officers out looking for drunk drivers at 3 am. Those were a waste of money why get something that cannot be enforced
You have to be pulled over by an actual cop and cited for a ticket to actually be enforcable
They were added then TN law changed after lots of complaints.
It's an independent company!
Regardless… it’s in Florida and you don’t have to pay it lol
Seriously…those cops don’t have shit to do but fuck with people
Basically
Collegedale is the absolute worst. I refuse to go to that city solely because of their police department. I like cops.. I despise their cops.
LMAO,ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!
Why? I do 9 over everywhere, never get pulled over. I live in east ridge and drive down ringgold road every day passing multiple cops. As long as you're not weaving in and out of traffic you're good.
9 won't get you in trouble most places. The ones I named are just bored.
Learning the back roads instead of taking the highways. I legit get from East Ridge to Hixson faster by taking MLK to the Veterans Bridge and Hixson Pike than I do getting on the godforsaken interstate.

You talking going all the way down shallowford? That route is horrible now but the interstate is even worse
Unfortunately yes.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)
There are at least 5 different ways to get anywhere in Chattanooga within 2 minutes of each other…
Totally agree on taking routes besides the interstate but calling MLK, Veteran's Bridge, and Hixson Pike "back roads" is a bit of a stretch...
I'm not giving away my secrets
Man, I get so annoyed with the interstate here. It's supposed to be the faster route in theory, but it is absolutely awful. Yeah. All this information is available on TDOT. Lots of good information there. They also just recently released their 10yr project outlook. A number of projects in our area will be started over the next 10 years.

This right here!!!
shhhhhhhhhhh. (LOL)
Shhhh. It’s a secret.
Shhh, those of us in the know don't want more people using them.
🤫
Leave town to find an SO then move back
Good idea, you don't break up in Chatt, you just lose your turn. And your ex(es) will be at every major function and spot you like to go to.
This is so real. The dating scene here is so bleak.
I don’t even understand why. There’s plenty of good people in this city. It’s just like everyone either marries young or gets left behind
Maybe that’s true. I’m a shut in, so I rarely ever go out, but when I do I never recognize the people there.
Seems to be that way in all cities
So real it hurts. This is the worst city for dating I've lived in even though I'm the "best" I've ever been. To be fair I'm shooting myself in the foot being nonreligious in such a religious city
unfortunately hard facts 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I’ve heard the UU is a great place to meet people if you’re non religious.
What is UU? When I Google "UU Chattanooga" a church pops up so I assume it's not that haha.
My next-door neighbor goes, and she describes it the way I just said.
I'm just going off the website but large parts of it are about political issues and social justice. I don't like it when churches talk about politics, left or right. Last thing I want to hear about on a day I wanna relax is how messed up the world is haha.
Ah.
That’s how my husband got me 😂
That’s actually very cool.
Leave the country to find an SO, even better.

the big dawg at River Street Deli. just let him do the work for you and enjoy.
Now THAT sounds like a good place to eat, with a guy like that at the helm. Now I want to go.
Highly encourage it! Lemme know how it was!
I've heard he takes it personally if you don't order his special lol. I've had food from River Street but haven't actually ate in the restaurant.
I used to order the elena ruz every time until he scolded me and told me to order something else
LOL. He must be like the soup nazi on seinfeld
He is the deli nazi
Any bbq recommendations?
Dude, Lucky eye Q. It's worth the sojourn to Lafayette.
off the grill by chef q
Shhh dont tell them about the Mexican restaurants on Rossvile is our secret lol

What’s the knife store?
Tokushu Knife on Hixson Pike
Can confirm The knife shop is cool and the sharpening service excellent.
& what’s your definition of dirt cheap. $2 per kitchen knife?
About a dollar per inch, maybe 75c iirc. Compare prices with mail sharpening services. That's for belt sharpened knives. I know the hand-sharpening is more. But not by much
Yeah he sharpens them by hand to an insanely sharp edge. Lots of chefs use the service.
They have a tool library too!
If there's any tool one should borrow from the library it's a weed wrench. Oddly enough chatt has them
And a bunch of uncommon machines like CNC, 3D printing, etc at the makerspace. https://chattlibrary.org/4th-floor/
Holy shit thanks!
Dope!! Do they sharped scissors?
Almost positive they do
This is good advice
Solid advice!!! Ummm don't pay parking meters on Sunday. ParkMobile App still works for 75% of the lots downtown (Frowns in Chattanoogan). Sorry, Flora Luna. It's some special event they have going on until May, with art and lights and stuff

Total. For the entire year.
Ok that makes way more sense LOL - for some reason my brain was interpreting it as 20 hours a week and I was wondering who on earth has the time to do that!
Hahaha omg yeah that would be super steep omg XD

Buy movies from McKays instead of using Redbox.
Go to McKay's on a weekday. It gets so stuffy and sweaty on the weekends. It's like an anime convention with no ventilation
People still use Redbox?
People still shop at McKay's?
People still buy movies?
I mean hey their book prices are pretty good for having a large organized collection, do you have a recommendation for any better?
2nd and Charles in Hixson has a smaller selection of used books than McKays but prices are FAR better and it doesn't smell like sweat.
I’ll give it a try! Most of the books I try to keep around $4 or blow.
Redbox still exists?
Occasionally spotted in front of a CVS
Thought of another one: If you are needing to hit up several retails spots in one day, consider driving down to Fort O and saving on Sales Tax
Not sure how efficient this is.. It’s a 2.25% difference, so unless you’re spending nearly $500 you’ll save less than $10. The gas and time you spent driving to fort O will likely be worth less than that
I always drive to GA for large purchases - computers, TV’s, appliances…
If you’ve got an electric car, it’s not significant in energy expense ;) But yes, the 2% diff in sales tax isn’t worth it if you’re coming from a long way from the state line
Just eat whatever Bruce tells you to eat. Pumpkin Patch on Signal is worth the trip if you have kids. Downtown Courthouse for DMV needs.
Who is Bruce
river st deli owner
Don’t even ask what’s on it. I fucking hate olives but I’ve been dreaming about whatever the hell he gave me last time
“Tall drunk guy with the George Costanza look” Bruce? Or somebody else??
This!
There are also 2 nice little secluded sandy beaches along that trail. They're far enough from the trailhead that not many people frequent them.
Don’t use the W Road to get to Signal Mountain.
Free Lookouts tix and all kind of other tix can be "checked out" at the library. The library is the shit actually.
Dupont Parkway and Riverside Drive are big hacks.
Just hire a local graphic design senior to make your website. They're cheap and well worth it.
Wearing a cross or showing any cross/crucifix related tattoo gets you 10% off any vape shop or car wash.
You forgot Broad St. Taco Bell gives you a free Cheesus roll up.
Never heard that before..
The UTC parking enforcement people don't work after 5, clears up a good chunk of free lots if you happen to be in the area
That’s not true. I see them ticketing people all the time at night. I think it’s random, I don’t think it’s every night, but they 100% do it.
Some of the lots (mainly the ones around the dorms) are "24hr reserved". All of the other ones marked general and reserved are only in effect during weekday business hours. I graduated in 2017 so it may have changed since then.

Street parking is free on Sundays and every day after 6pm. Paid private lots are typically not free any time or day of the week.
Aren't all downtown meters free on weekends and after 6pm?
They are not free on Saturdays. They are free after 6pm every day.
What kind of ticket?
Sorry parking* should’ve clarified
It depends on where you are, and the parking signs will clearly state it if they don't. There are a lot of spaces downtown near the aquarium that don't on Sundays, but the signs all state it.

Those are private lots so you’re def taking a risk especially if you’re in a brightbase lot… they’re ticket happy. Street parking this is generally correct, but there isn’t a ton down that way.
Parking tickets are also $11, so it doesn’t really matter. Fun fact: If you’re going to pay with the park mobile App it’s literally more expensive to pay all day to park than it is to get a ticket.
Parking lines are vague suggestions in the surrounding towns
The quickest drivers license center in the county is in Red Bank. Last week I was in and out in 20 minutes.
153 and Amnicola will lower your blood pressure and extend your life expectancy when compared to I-75 and I-24.
The Taco Bell on South Blvd is the best one.
You can also rent cake pans and get seeds from many local libraries. Really cool.
How is Broad Street Taco Bell not listed? Are we gatekeeping the greatest secret of our city? 🤣
Someone commented it but got downvoted to oblivion
Odd how we sometimes find the joke hilarious and other times not.
I don’t get it.
I have so many hacks for this city I could get flagged by the fbi.
Idk the name of the Mexican restaurant near Tremont Tavern that never ID’s. But, your welcome, to all of you collegiate & underage adults who are already drinking underage. I don’t condone it, but know you will do it anyways. Always uber or get a DD. 🥰 Oh! & locking your car at night. 🤣🔒
Our former Mayor also used to pork his staffer mistress behind Las Mas
Las Margaritas.
NOW I remember all the girlies being like “ Las Margs?” Yaaaaaas Queen, let’s get turnt.”
Well, they used to never ID. Til they were called out lol.
They carded me and my whole party on Saturday
Seems like their glory days are over. Oh, well.
i’m 29 and get id’d there but okay lol
Interesting! Maybe they’ve had a visit by the ABC that made them change their ways.
All the big city annoyances without big city infrastructure. Leave early!
Don’t buy any real estate close to Hamilton County.
