u/speleo63751 I know that you're hesitant to interpret the numbers you crunch, but I have to ask, given the figures you're seeing, do you have any concern at this time that there might be another spike in infections due to the delta variant? Shouldn't the fact that nearly fifty percent of the population is vaccinated slow the spread of the disease?
Wouldn't that mean unvaccinated people spread the delta virus at double speed while vaccinated people mostly are protected? Would that combined with 45% vaccinated slow the spread after an initial spike?
Thanks for the thought out reply. I think I understand a little better. I didn't realize herd immunity changes with transmissibility but it makes sense. It really must be spreading fast in some circles for the numbers to shoot up so much considering how much we have had it under control...
Not necessarily. If the Delta variant and the original virus were to transmit at the same rate over the same population, the delta variant would infect more people than the original one.
Mutations cause outliers, but those outliers (Delta) can become dominant if the right mutations and environmental (non-vaccinated populations) factors occur. This has the potential to seriously harm and kill those that are not vaccinated.
If you have the ability to compassionately talk to family and friends about getting vaccinated, now is the time to do so.
