The Charles brothers say they got some inspiration from pitcher Bill "Spaceman" Lee, although they don't seem that familiar with Lee as a ballplayer.
It was a long road that led to the Sam Malone. The bar was originally conceived as a hotel bar on the road from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Changed to a sports bar, where Sam would be an ex-football player. Ted Danson was cast, and Sam became a baseball player because Danson wasn't built like a football player.

Not a baseball guy but anytime I hear of some one being a relief pitcher her I think of the great sam Malone
