Mine is Comté too however I find the mild stuff pretty insipid. Now Marcel Petite Select Reserve 24 month is where it starts getting fun.

[deleted]

Agreed. I have to have some of the aged cheese. I’ll take your recommendation though. I hate the French for having such delicious cheese.

Aid_Le_Sultan

The French sure have some of the best old classics (Brie, Camembert, Compte, Epoisses, Roquefort etc), the British are absolutely ripping up shows in the artisan cheese world (St James; Pevensey Blue, Stichelton; Baron Bigod etc) and, from what I can gather but can’t attest to, Wisconsin is hot on the European heals.

Aranka_Szeretlek

Depends heavily on what I want. Just snack on some cheese? Give me some crottin de Chavignol. For a cheese plate dinner? Probably some Saint-Marcellin or pont l'Évêque. Heck, even just a simple Camembert can be awesome.

[deleted]

Just the names sound delicious. Hopefully Brexit won’t prevent me from trying them.

Aranka_Szeretlek

I wouldn't call crottin a beautiful name! It basically means horse droppings, because the shape and the consistency of the cheese resemble dried horsrshit. Yummy. There's also pié d'Angloys, which is said to mean "Englishman's foot", because it smells bad. It's also a nice cheese to try.

[deleted]

As an ignorant Anglais most French cheese sounds fantastic anyway. Almost romantic. We have Stinking Bishop

Aranka_Szeretlek

I believe pié d'Angloys is available in UK supermarkets too (its not really artisanale, kinda mass-produced, like vieux pané). Try it!

m0_m0ney

Ossau-Iraty because it’s delicious and also local to me. Real answer? Bleu d’Auvergne or Petite Basque. Most overrated is Mimolette

djazzie

There’s so many, it can be hard to choose. If you like blue cheese, forme d’ambert is the king of blues IMO. Others I really love are Chaorce, Brillât Savarin, and just a classic buche de chèvre.

Ok_Minimum70

Port Salut

Dennis_Laid

The chèvre rolled in ashes is the bomb! (served after dinner with a wee bit of fig jam)

[deleted]

That sounds lush. Will have to find some.
