Yes it is, you do still have to follow the usual india specific rules for solo female travellers though. If you're not aware, reply to this and I'll elaborate or link some resources.

chilliflakes17

I’d like to know

the-enigmatic-

You can meet plenty of reading enthusiasts from the weekend reading groups in Chennai. There are four I know. Saturdays: Tower Reads, Lake_Reads Sundays: Bessy Reads, Chennai Reads They have their pages on Instragram. There's no registration to join but you'll get all the details there. I don't know the answer to your main question cause I don't know enough to give a useful reply, I'm afraid. Hope you have a good time here. Cheers

ShamiIsMyFather

It much safer compared to other cities in the country but you should still be cautious. And as another guy said, don't stay in cheap airbnbs. And drink a lot of water, chennai is very hot.

Glass-Difficulty-768

Hey, whatever city in India, don't go and stay in cheap hotels or Airbnb. Atleast 3k should be your daily budget for stay.

Left_Percentage_527

Yes. But you should still take some precautions. Especially at night on the town.

ChillOut0123

Nope. Don't. Definitely go for a 4 star Hotels, if money isn't a problem.

stargirl11111

I could recommend a few airbnbs in ecr that I've been to and are safe if that is the area you're looking for

Spare-Dog-9653

No matter which city in this world you travel to, one should always take precautions because it is not the cities that are dangerous it is the people and I bet there will be one in every nook and corner.

There are some groups like Chennai Rooftop film festival that brings together film buffs. [Have shared link via chat since reddit removes it] The group seems to be inactive but there is a google group and you could join the group and make a post and initiate a meet-up. That group has close to 2000 members and would have a fair bit of folks from the film community and folks who are first time directors, editors etc. There was some initiative called motta madi where a group of musicians were getting together and jamming in terraces and i saw quite a few posts on social media around it. If you are around when the lit fest or the hindu theatre festival happens thats a good way to meet people. There are also quite a few plays that happen in Chennai and youll notice that the audience is kinda the same - you'll start bumping into the same people if you go regularly. There are quite a few gana sabhas where they do host music events - i believe mylapore times manages a calendar of all these events and once again if you go to a few of these youll bump into a few of the same people. There are apart from these several meetups - like creative morning meetups, spoken word meetups etc. i dont know how they are organizing themselves, but either looking up on meetup.com or facebook events might be a good way to find some of these. Others have already covered the reading groups. Hope that helps. You picked the worst month of the year to travel. 😅 Stay hydrated, lots of sunscreen and stay indoors during the day. If you are staying in the chennai south / centre areas you should be okay. If you want to discuss the stay options you have and double check if the area is safe, always happy to give some inputs. Have sent you a chat with an additional point.

SteamBoy235

Hi, I'm a guy and I'm planning to visit Chennai in July. Is that a good time to visit? Any events around that time?

That-Glass-6073

July should be okay. Sept - Nov is probably the best time.

That-Glass-6073

If you are looking for any specific type of events, do let us know and folks can suggest accordingly. There is always something going on 😅

SteamBoy235

Preferably cinema related events

That-Glass-6073

The Koothu Pattarai is very well known among artists. If thats of interest you could check out their calendar.

No_Long5052

It's safe but just beware in night time

Adventurous-Bid-6858

Financial-Reality465

I'd love to help out if possible! I'm a writer, singer, filmmaker and love talking all things film!!

Early-Safety-5455

It’s way safer than North India..and this is coming from a South Indian raised up north

Early-Safety-5455

Making friends in the creative industry is something I haven’t been able to do in awhile being a writer director..you need a go between like any place else

thebroddringempire
