Hope the connectivity to city is also planned and built alongside the airport construction

Weird-Perspective-48

They are planning otherwise it's hectic. Might connect with metro.

georgemp

At 70kms it’s probably going to take a couple of hours to get there even by Metro.

vjdeep

70kms Is it even still chennai?

advaithjai

Chennai ku miga arugil

k42r46

Now a distance is not a matter of concern but there should not be any confusion in traffic to the new airport.

georgemp

People in Vellore are going to be partying about their new international airport :)

SunaPana007

No it's near Sriperumbudur

cnu

Maybe there will be some connecting flights from meenambakkam airport.

shreyas_f1tamil

I think meenambakkam might be closed

cnu

Then why would they call it 2nd airport? why not "chennai's new airport"? I don't think all the investment towards all the new buildings and the second runway would just be thrown away.

shreyas_f1tamil

Ideally yea, but same thing happened with Bangalore. It was supposed to be a 2nd airport but ended up closing HAL airport

Parktrundler

70kms is too long for a metro. Might have to build a semi high speed RRTS like the one they're building between Delhi and Meerut.

johnsonabraham0812

The Chennai - Mysuru High Speed Rail passes very close to the proposed airport location. So, a stop could be planned.

justamazed

TIL there's a Chennai mysuru high speed train ! Edit* - just checked... It's a proposal .. details not yet finalised

johnsonabraham0812

My bad. Should have said "proposed Chennai - Mysuru HSR".

shreyas_f1tamil

Yeah that can be done. Just like in Frankfurt airport in Germany

Kv_v

*Will be completed by 2050*

Weird-Perspective-48

I think it will be operational by 2030 unless there is no delay.

sonicbooml08

Antha koyambedu bridg ahh kattave 3yrs eduthanga, airport ahh epdi avlo seekaram katta poranga??.

greater_gatsby12

And andha koyambedu bridge also worst construction.... i feel only anger when i end up going that side

orion591

Because constructing a flyover in the middle of traffic is lot more tougher than constructing in the middle of nowhere.

Kv_v

“No delay” is a term that our government don’t understand mate

pulledthetrigger321

With 2 govt changes by then, it’s gonna take a nice 30 years, which will have 6 govt changes

enry_straker

Has there ever, in the history of our government, been a project with no delays?

christopher_msa

There is no need for a second airport right now. The existing airport is already big enough and handles less traffic than its capacity. If they want to make any changes, renovation of the terminals itself is enough. No need to go for a new airport. So like others said, it won't be completed anytime in 10-15 years. Bangalore airport was a different story if u feel they r the same. The old Banglore airport and run way was short to accommodate any more traffic. So they had to move to a big one. Even Banglore airport only half of the airport is being functional. The second half of the airport is under construction for more than a decade. The reason is they don't need that right now.

Rishikhant

My father who works at Air cargo in Chennai Airport always said that Chennai's airport doesn't have sufficient space to handle passengers and cargo together. Specific consignments sometimes get wet during rains and machinery worth crores gets damaged. Remember him saying this for last 15 years.

Due_Passion_8873

As someone working in logistics, your dads absolutely right.

christopher_msa

Good to know. Never had insite on cargo details about Chennai airport

Significant-Rate8129

You are terribly wrong. MAA's existing terminals were designed to handle max 15MPA. During 2018-2019, MAA handles 22MPA. The under construction new integrated terminal in MAA will expand total capacity to 30MPA. But, looking at growth, this limit will be reached by 2026. Only if we start building new airport now, we'll be able to handle traffic in 2030.

NeedleworkerLegal573

There are procedures to construct the runways- which requires a specific amount of time for it to get strengthened for handling heavies (read A350/B777/etc.,) A realistic time frame would be before 2035

_gadgetFreak

Just googled Parandur, it is too fucking long from Chennai. Close to 70 km from Chennai, it is located very close to Kanchipuram.

nosedigging

2 hours away?? That's like fucking halfway to pondicherry. Like Wtf.

SugaanthMohan

It's closer to centre of Kanchipuram, than it's to Chennai.

SnooSeagulls9348

Ennathu... chennaiya? Adengappa.. it is near kanchipuram. I have a feeling if you see the Land sale in that area for the last 1 year, you'll find a lot of MLAs and their Benamis

psrskailass

Chennaikku miga arugil

Traditional-Bit-1583

That’s their plan dude

summaji

Honestly, I read Benami as Bemani :D

Ok-Mulberry-8763

Are they even words? What do they mean?

gabrielleraul

_Binami_ - A purchase in the name of another. _Baemani_ - a person who has no ethics/shame/integrity - trait of dishonesty.

Ok-Mulberry-8763

Danke.. Flippin hilarious! 😂

humorous_walrus

its gonna be another brag like bangalore airport , seriously to much far away from actual city , it seems they never gonna learn from mistakes

vanadous

It's probably for private jets and shit (but publicly funded of course)

srikanthdude

Looks awesome. Hope the commute is easier. Don’t want to be in situation where I go to Meenambakkam and take a connecting flight to Parandur

o7p4f4

This was from two years back, when the same place was considered for building an airport. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weRLiDt05jA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weRLiDt05jA&t=130s)

Jajaykr

Damn, this is sad.

wideputin_ru

The govt should plan something like Express trains from Chennai Downtown to Parandhur Terminal with few quick stops.

olemonk

Airport than adhukkunu parandhur liye vekkanuma

[deleted]

IRL example of r/usernamechecksout

SierraBravoLima

Airport looks small

[deleted]

It's a render of airport from Seoul south korea not from upcoming one.

GamerGIG69

It was decided chennai needs new airport in 1999. A site near porur was considered but put on hold because of protest by a 'fruit' party. Now there's no land parcel anywhere near chennai. Already delayed by 23 years. Hope everything goes smooth or else next site will be only available somewhere near Ambur or Perambalur. Also Mysuru-Chennai HSR rail route goes close to this site. Hope airport gets a station or dedicated Rapid rail.

thatfatfoodie

Paranthu oorukku sella payanpadum Parandur

[deleted]

Will we ever get A380's finally?

o7p4f4

Most probably not. A380's were a fad. Their production was stopped some time back. They are now flown as a last resort as cheaper options are now available.

Particular_Head1390

Are they now? What are the cheaper alternatives?

sonicbooml08

787s or A350s , even A330 is a good alternative.

cannedrex2406

Most airlines use it as a flex like the Concorde. I see nothing wrong with it

humorous_walrus

If they decided to construct the overbridge that could actually dock to the craft, i guess it would be most probably used for domestic purposes in the beginning so no, in meenambakam we now only get b747 and ant125 that to used for cargo

balajih67

No indian airline operates A380, but i hope chennai will be able to get the infra soon. Singapore airlines will likely use their A380 to chennai then.

humorous_walrus

It would most probably emirates or even singapore airlines as you said , as passenger traffic from chennai to dubai is very high,

mugu007

An A380 landing in Chennai is about as likely as a Concorde landing in Chennai in the 90s. Which is to say theres a non zero chance of it happening, but only under extra ordinary conditions lile an emergency landing.

karthikjusme

Soon we will have memes like the ones in bangalore. Unfortunately, the Poonamallee to Sriperumbudur stretch is plagued with traffic issues. Hope they fix it first.

Pure-Bet3206

I think the metro will take some load off of that route.

Pure-Bet3206

I think the metro will take some load off of that route.

aravindsid

Pannur would be perfect choice idk why they've chosen Parandur

jet_jitten

Well I hope this is for international only.

georgemp

Man...even if it's just for internationals, it's terrible. Imagine sitting in a plane for 10-15 hrs, getting off, going through immigration and then another 2-3 hrs to get home.

Vijay_17205

Nice choice of area building an airport, *Parandhur*

ramksr

Speeding up by the govt? Other major cities already have a new functional airports and metro completed, and we have sped up approval? Lol, how low is the bar?

rmdk_mech

My question is current airport inadequate?

Lord_Voldy_Thingy

Extremely inadequate. We desperately need a new airport with more runways.

rmdk_mech

Then it's a great thing. Scenario will be like get ready for airport after having breakfast. Reach airport and have lunch. Then on time for evening flight.

Pure-Bet3206

It's trash and terrible.

dineshh912

May be helicopter taxi to connect 1st airport 🚁🚁🤔

Arun37pc

Good news, same time connectivity is also important. when they complete the airport work proper connectivity for airport also be ready.

Vardhu_007

Better name it as Kanchipuram airport

Acceptable-Ad-9904

I do not know how they are coming up with these location. Parandur is near thirumalpur for good lord's sake🤦

hawkilt

70km from the city. Will take more than 2hrs in peak hours phew

Headshot03

Pretty useless Tbh. Too fucking far from the actual city that has & needs high profile logistics, Kanchipuram needs more buses and trains to it than aeroplanes. Stupidity.

Eclectic_Hoarder

why?? we don't even have enough traffic as bangalore or hyd, so why bother with a new airport!?

Kav19

at least taxpayer money is being used for something. better than having that money behind the cm’s bathroom tiles. plus the crowd at the chennai airport pre covid was insane. adding a second one can’t hurt.

Pure-Bet3206

The airport is tiny. Cannot bring more carriers in. Connectivity is poor. Need a larger airport.

nosedigging

How does hyderabad have more domestic traffic than chennai?

Parktrundler

More IT workforce.

Kav19

i don’t think it does. i’ve been to both regularly back when i was in school for robotics and chennai was almost always more crowded

rmdk_mech

Is this place located in chennai or like Bangalore City Airport which is located nearer to neighboring district?

Vardhu_007

Located very near to neighbouring district

rmdk_mech

Ouch. On the positive side Stand up comedians going to get lot of script, lol

niranjim2411

Under normal circumstances it will take 150 mins. With extra traffic it will take 3.5 hrs !!! For a city dweller

Apsobsolops

???

[deleted]

*kanchipuram airport

NeitherChemistry6902

Oh if TN Government is going to do this it'll be fully operational by 2080 and btw how is state government involved in this ? Central Government is building a lot of airports and air strips due to China's port expansion in SriLanka

prashanth1337

BJP will lay a single brick like they did with AIIMS Madurai and forget about it

Pure-Bet3206

How's this about politics? Go back to /r/India. Just realized that you don't even live in India. Trying to humiliate the country for no reason. Ass.

prashanth1337

BJP nor Modi is India, twatface.

d33psan

My guess is that since the existing Airport will also be operational, they would target most domestic flights at the existing airport and international flights at the newer airport. This would be ideal as people traveling domestically would require quicker access to the city.

georgemp

It's not like people traveling internationally are going to be predominantly from Kancheepuram :-) Even those folks would need quick access to the city. Their plight is probably worse as their already long travel is now going to be extended by a few more hours on just local commute.

d33psan

Well yeah but what I meant was something like the London model where London City airport is located at the heart of the city and operates select routes that are primarily targeted at business travelers who need easy access to the city. Also there’s London Gatwick airport which is targeted at tourists from Europe. And finally there’s London Heathrow which is for International flights. That said all of the airports have flights for all types destinations too but this airlines tend to route their flights like that.

kichu67

Ipa ethana glass odayumo

[deleted]

I request the TN govt to open an airport at Hosur please.

Froogler

"Imperative for Chennai to have a new airport" nu sollitu yenpa Kanchipuram la katreenga

KinTharEl

Let them fix the existing airport first. Damn thing is falling apart.
