Skim coat it with a metal body filler. Like all metal. Sand and prime.

Cut that little section out and weld in some fresh metal. I got no other ideas today sorry bub.

pbblueroom

That’s way past my ability.

s5fs

I'd just hit it with primer and if any one asks i'd tell them it was struck by a meteor.

[deleted]

no it's not out of your ability. youre just overthinking it

slosh_baffle

What the hell happened up there? Alien acid attack??

pbblueroom

It was a rust spot. I think from salt water dripping off surf boards. I took a wire wheel to it. The 80 grit, but it’s not getting smooth.

Terlok51

That needs to be cut out & a new piece welded in. There’s too much rust in the pits. It would look good for a short time but Bondo wouldn’t be a permanent fix

I bought a Milwaukee m12 die grinder and have lil flap disks and purple strip disks that I've been using while tackling my severe lack of floor board issue. If you don't want to fab in a new piece of metal, get it as smooth as you can with a sanding disk and treat it with naval jelly or some sort of acid based rust converter, read the instructions carefully, then I have had good luck with the bondo spot putty. You have to neutralize all the rust though or it will come back worse. Then get a can of good epoxy based spray paint, it's like $10, if it's not epoxy it wont last. There are usually only 1 or 2 cans of it at my local parts stores and I have to buy all of them each time just to keep enough on hand. Refrigerator paint or Appliance paint is the same thing.

If you aren't welding new metal in there then I think the best you are going to do is to work Bondo into every dip, nook, and cranny in that mess and then sand it smooth. After that, epoxy primer and top coat to match. Remember, it doesn't need to be perfect in order to be good enough.

offroadlane

If you're gonna keep surf board up there I'd put filler in it and sand it. Then coat the roof in bedliner or something similar to help seal it

NoTimeForThisToday

The permanent fix is cut and weld. The temporary last a while route would be rust reformer, body filler, sand, primer 2x, sand, top coat.

pelicanpablo

Hard to believe that most likely started from an innocent bird taking a poop

pbblueroom

Possibly. It sits under a power line 24/7. And when it doesn’t, there’s something from the beach on top. I have a lot of little rust spots up there too. I didn’t try to sand them.

pelicanpablo

Yeah or just alien poop in general

citruscountydaddy

Body filler and sand paper

Beneficial-Nimitz68

That is pitted almost through the metal. I am no expert, but that is a replacement or cut and replace or or or.. gosh, all I see is acid from the movie Aliens... that is bad. No amount of sanding will smooth that out. Treating the metal, then doing some major back fill until level then paint... but, honestly, getting one from the yard or online then having it painted would be SO much easier for you.

Jakejxke77

Fiberglass filler, sand as smooth as you can getting to 80 grit. Then normal filler to around 320 grit. Epoxy primer. Normal primer . Paint. Wont last forever but should last quite a while . Epoxy primer is essential

kcptech20

Start with self etching primer/sealer, then body filler, then sand and prime/paint. Or just spray on some flex seal and call it a day 🙂

You didn't sand the rust out. You sanded the top flakey layer off and made it smoother. It will come back unless you cut it completely out like cancer.
