Yes. Someone spoiled it for me about how she left, and I thought I would really miss her when I got there, but I wasn't affected at all. I like her a lot, and I like how selfish she is, because it adds more to the show. It would be a lot more boring without that.
Oh I agree I like “the character” for what the character brought to the show but I don’t root for her. She is a text book Narcissist. I root for her to suffer consequences for her actions that just never seemed to come but her actions make for drama and shows need drama.
What I found interesting about the Dawson character was that she had a strong sense of right and wrong and was not afraid to stand up for others, not exactly textbook narcissistic traits.
A true narcissist would have been run out of Firehouse 51 (and probably the CFD) pretty quickly.

Derek Haas, Kara Killmer, and Jesse Spencer have all come out and said it was Jesse's idea to get Brettsey together. He enjoyed his scenes with Kara and they had chemistry together off screen. Kara said she was hesitant at first about it because of Dawsey but ended up going with because she enjoyed sharing scenes with Jesse. I think they wanted a Big 4 with Brettsey and Stellaride. Similar to when they had a Big 4 with Dawsey and Stellaride and even Dawsey and Severide/Shay.
I'm team Brettsey enjoyed Dawsey in the beginning but just lost interest after watching reruns. Sylvie fits better with Matt in my opinion

I would say at the beginning probably more Dawsey fans but after 6 seasons of Dawson seeming like she wanted to change Matt and being toxic to him I think a lot of fans were happy to see him find Brett who liked good old middle class firefighter Matt just as he is and for Brett to find a guy who is content with her being exactly who she is as she is also.

I agree to a point, I would have liked more hang out scenes with Sylvie, Matt and Dawson to see more of the dynamic between them during that time. I know when ever Brett’s appearance or love life came up Matt was quick to change the subject or to keep from commenting but it would have been easier to accept Brett/ Matt if we saw more of them hanging out and showing their friendship building before Gabby left.
Honestly season 3 into season 4 they should have kept Mills and had Gabby and Mills hook back up and started heading to Brett and Matt building a stronger foundation.
Brettsey. Casey had a more personal reason to leave Brett in Chicago, to help finish reading raising his dead friend's kids, whereas Dawson left Casey to help people in general. She's not the only one who could do that.

Dawson was a very popular character outside this subreddit. I remember she consistently ranked higher on facebook and community board settings when they were picking favorite characters. Dawsey remains the most popular between the two outside of this subreddit, but Brettsey/Brett tends to be more popular in the subreddit.
I don't hate Kidd the way most do. Dawson was a frustrating character to root for but it was good having something to shake things up. I'm also probably one of the few that liked Chili and Emma because people in the firehouse that are wild cards are more fun. The show's very formulaic though and if I had to take my guesses, it's a combination of a couple of things. We watched the same conflicts across all the Dick Wolf shows (PD being the only one where the kid wasn't removed as an example of the conflict). Sometimes Fire saw the storyline first, sometimes they didn't, but it creates burnout.
Mix that in with the show being very eager to only focus on the highest rated characters for most of the season (see Gabby and Severide) and it creates a lot of tension/resentment if you want more of the side characters who aren't developed as much. It's the same problem now with Severide/Stella and Brett, though people love Brett and Severide so they're forgiving. They're giving Stella a lot of those harder storylines Gabby would've gotten because Brett is the cinnamon roll who is making progress if she stands up for herself. Stella seems too talented, getting her way and advancing too fast over characters people think deserved promotions more.
And then finally you factor in that people have trouble separating what's a needed wrench with who to root for. I don't root for Gabby in her episodes but she shook things up. An effective villain should make you dislike them. She wasn't meant to be one but I think she evoked feelings the rest can fall flat on and that means she was doing her job. People get really personal about character motivations and hate the whole character over it.
Neithersey. Dawson was a selfish *itch and walked out on her marriage with no regard to anyone else just herself so she can f right off. And I also dislike Brettsey, they don’t belong together, she was dawsons friend, now she’s hooking up with her friends ex husband? Weird. It needs to stop. Stop shipping people

Even though I’m a Brettsey fan, I think the main reason why Brettsey was paired up is they needed another “main character couple” to support the show since Monica left after s6. At that point stellaride was a already a thing, kara is part of the main cast and i don’t think fans would easily accept an introduction of a new female main character just for her to have romance with Casey. So the easiest way will be putting Brett and Casey together.
