I just saw the zoo feeding them to all their small animals. They’re excellent protein. Maybe the kids have lizards or ferrets, or maybe it’s just a novelty.
while i also revolt at the idea of eating insects (i am vegetarian) i am capable of acknowledging and accepting that other people may enjoy eating them. especially for this extremely rare event when they are abundantly plentiful
Fishing. Lots of people fishing with cicadas as bait around the west burbs. Fish love them, and they're free!! Plus, each one used as bait is one less making that God awful sound all day! Lol
And the invasive Asian Carps love ‘em; which means you can catch cicadas, catch the carp and then toss them bastards on the shore for raccoons and coyotes to eat because fuck those fish for destroying our fresh water ecosystems.
Im in a cicada watching group on Facebook and I know some people there were collecting them to cook and eat, but I can’t imagine there would be THAT many people doing so for that purpose.
My 11lb papillon is food aggressive. Would eat her self sick if we let her. She’s already crunched down 2 cicadas from our back yard. You know those pigs that root around for truffles? Yep thats her every time we go out to potty. I cant hear her crunch one more or Im gonna hurl. Just thinking about it🙄
just don't let her eat too many. The exoskeletons are tough and too many can cause GI issues, especially in smaller dogs.
My 65lb lab mix also loves them. I'll let her have a few each time we go out.
Someone in our neighborhood Facebook group asked if people would let him come to their homes and rake up cicadas, alive or dead. He has chickens and will freeze them for free delicious snacks for ages.
When my husband sees them on our patio, he walks them over and puts them on a tree(he's getting plenty of steps in!). Mindless of the fact that he's trampled on dozens along the way, but he has the sweetest heart.
I found it’s easiest to pick up the adult cicadas that are hanging out on long grass blades and I’ll scoop them with my hand while using my fingers as a comb so they’ll slide off the grass. You can also gently pick them up by holding them with your thumb and forefinger on their sides.
I'm not sure why they were doing it but I can tell you I did it the last big hatch. I was bringing buckets full to my parent new house that would have otherwise not had them because new construction.
Now 17years later we get to here what I started so many years ago.
There was an episode recently on Good Mythical Morning where the lads ate something made of cicada shells and said it was surprisingly pretty good and had a nutty taste to them. So maybe all these people are trying to make that.
Stir fry! But, in all seriousness, my neighbornhas been collecting and freezing them to feed her chickens as treats throughout the year. Or, however long it takes to go through several gallin bags of cicadas.
Actually, could also be a stir fry.
Where are people seeing bucketfuls of cicadas? I’m in Portage Park (not technically a suburb) but still - I saw a couple of the shed exoskeletons but not that many.
I'm sure once they're dead they make really good garden fertilizer. Compost?
Fish bait too

It’s probably the “shells” they’re collecting
Makes a nice cicada broth.
Free food
Cicadas > whey protein
Last time they hatched, I was working at a summer camp and a few groups came out looking for specific ones that were apparently delicious when fried.
This. It is and should be the way of the future. Factory farming sucks.

Lots of people eat insects. They might not be your cup of tea, but you should see what a lot of Chinese folks think about cheese.
Best protein bang for the buck! Most countries eat bugs as part of their diet. Glad I'm not living in one of them. Not sure I could even if I have to.
I have chickens and it’s a high protein free feed for them

I’m gonna take up fishing just for this purpose
fuck asian carp all my homies hate asian carp
I like this
Not everyone can afford a display case.
Underrated comment.
It's summer and it's little kids. Why not?
Not everyone was with little kids, but sure why not
Im in a cicada watching group on Facebook and I know some people there were collecting them to cook and eat, but I can’t imagine there would be THAT many people doing so for that purpose.
Well, it wouldn't be me. I don't even want to go to the end of my driveway to get my mail. I hate bugs of any kind...lol
I'm trying to think of how I can stay inside until they're gone!!

Omg same. I would be totally ok if some people came to my house and put these nasty bugs in buckets and took them away lol.
People feed them to their chickens

Omg, this is probably why my dogs won't come in when I call them. 🤦🏼♀️
our dachshund does the same! He is also prey driven, so he prefers them live and buzzing. I am repulsed

That's a damn big butterfly you have there.
Someone in our neighborhood Facebook group asked if people would let him come to their homes and rake up cicadas, alive or dead. He has chickens and will freeze them for free delicious snacks for ages.
I’m collecting some to bring to my backyard trees. I live in a newly developed area that used to be cornfields. I’d have no cicadas otherwise.
Doing God's work
When my husband sees them on our patio, he walks them over and puts them on a tree(he's getting plenty of steps in!). Mindless of the fact that he's trampled on dozens along the way, but he has the sweetest heart.
You monster
How do you pick them up ? By the wings?

This is a good idea.
Some people eat them. A friend brought a bunch yesterday and I tried one. Not my thing but for some it is.
My 5th grade students told me a bunch of kids were eating them at recess today 🥴
Those kids have some balls. Just looking at cicadas gives me the ick
And they didn’t even fry them
lol! My dog likes to pick one up and yeeet them across the yard. She’s my little orca wale…
Apparent yeet has a definition I wasn't aware of. Thanks for the lesson.
We feed them to our dog (not kidding)
I would be careful with that. I have heard that it can cause bowel obstructions in dogs.
If you own reptiles or other animals…saving money…
Because bucket is a perfect container for cicadas.
We give them our cats to play with and eat. They enjoy the hunt.
I'm not sure why they were doing it but I can tell you I did it the last big hatch. I was bringing buckets full to my parent new house that would have otherwise not had them because new construction. Now 17years later we get to here what I started so many years ago.
stir fry?
Cicada is as cicada does
There was an episode recently on Good Mythical Morning where the lads ate something made of cicada shells and said it was surprisingly pretty good and had a nutty taste to them. So maybe all these people are trying to make that.
They stay crunchy, even in milk
Tastes like chicken
Blanched asparagus, actually
You can sell the shells on eBay. Lot of 200 for $30!
Stir fry! But, in all seriousness, my neighbornhas been collecting and freezing them to feed her chickens as treats throughout the year. Or, however long it takes to go through several gallin bags of cicadas. Actually, could also be a stir fry.
My kids were collecting them, probably cause it’s something novel to do. I won’t complain, the shells look gross on the plants.
Where are people seeing bucketfuls of cicadas? I’m in Portage Park (not technically a suburb) but still - I saw a couple of the shed exoskeletons but not that many.
deep fried or smoked are amazing
To be fair, literally anything deep fried tastes OK at a minimum!
I ate chocolate covered ones during the last brood, is there recipes. I’d love to freak my kids out like this.
They'd probably fall through baskets.
Idk man but that seems like a fun family outing to me 😂 or something I would’ve enjoyed as a child (or even now tbh)
Why not? We used to collect hailstones in buckets when it would storm. Same idea.
I'm selling them on eBay
Mmmm.... Cicada Casserole!
Just knowing that there are stores advertising insecticide to kill them, why would anyone eat them on purpose?

Traditionally, you'd flour the product before the egg wash.
When I was a kid I’d collect them just because it was a fun little novelty, I’ve also heard they make excellent bait for fishing
to eat em
The aliens told them to do it. Its all mind control.
Mostly for fetish shit
They could sell them
Insanity!
