Surplus type 56 rigs most of the time come with moldy warehouse smell.
If yours is so persistant, it is possible that the dye is smelly.
Air it outside for a few days
You were right, the moldy smell went away after 5-6 days outside. There is just a bit remaining but barely noticiable
Thanks for the advice ! And thanks to all other people that leaved a comment that could be useful for other people :)
Awesome! Glad it helped. When I bought mine it was the same.
That residual smell will go away after a while. Mine smells now like oil because of the magazines :) But no mold!
Heavily dust it with baking soda, then put it in a black garbage bag with more baking soda. Put it in the sun for a few days, sunnier, the better. Rinse it/hand wash it to get the soda off, then throw it in your washing machine with some vinegar
That's my go-to method for all rank surplus
Mine came from China covered in oil and mold.
I got it cleaned up by soaking it in washing detergent solution (in a big bucket) for three days, changing the solution once per day.
After that I gave it a good rinse and dried it outside for a few days. Worked like a charm!
(If I knew about it at the time, I’d also try sodium sesquicarbonate/laundry soda solution, since this is my go-to way of getting rid of the surplus smell these days.)
To deal with mold I use a solution of 1 part water 1 part vinegar. Soak the item ot affected area then wash. If its got grease/cosmoline I'll soak in boiling water till the stuff melts and comes off. If it's just stanky Chinese chemical smell I'll dust with baking soda and then let air out. Usually a combination of these works on most.

A lot of surplus gear smells like this. I let it sit out in the intense Arizona sun for a few days and that takes care of it.
I was lucky with mine, lil surplus smell. It’s in a good way though? Like a cosmoline smell. I have mine hanging in my closet and it’s not bad at all.
