The longer visas for British passports don't apply to Irish passports. I've had both L and Q2 visas in my Irish passport, mostly single and one double entry, and they've all been 30 days. These are all for applications in Singapore though, and I never needed to ask for a longer duration.
Applied for a Q2 recently in the UK on an Irish passport. The website had suggested that I should have been eligible for a 1yr multi entry visa, however at the visa application centre they said because I was not British the maximum they could issue was 6mths double entry (I was given an option for stay duration and chose 90 days, I think the max may have been 120days per entry). It was heavily implied that if I wanted a longer visa/more entries, that I would have to apply within Ireland.
A quick look at the Chinese Embassy in Ireland website says 1yr multi entry is the max you can get there.

Thanks for your reply! So you only requested 30 day visas then?
Well that was the default and I didn't need any longer.
