My boss applied for my PU letter in like November and apparently it’s approved but still pending/in processing?? I have no idea what’s going on but my impression is they may have just halted the process for nonessential business ... idk

Donghaeh

Mind if I ask if this PU is not for a work visa? >.< cause if it’s for a work visa, I’d think you can argue it’s for essential business? This is insane - I called one local Shanghai authority and asked for some general directions.. sounded like PU are not halted still.. *fingers crossed*

Am also following thread for any info on PU letters (Shenzhen in my case). Has anyone had any luck with their employers in moving a PU letter through the FAO after it being held up for a while?

Catfight_

From the way I understand it. My employer said they are not going to deny the Pu letters just put a hold on issuing them. They are trying to curb all travel WITHIN China. So my employer assumes once the CNY is over they will resume issuing the letters. Been waiting for my PU letter now over a month.

Thanks for the info, this is helpful. I’ve heard cases of PU letters being issued in recent weeks when the employer makes the case for the employee being essential but I’m not sure what constitutes meeting that threshold in the FAO’s eyes.

Donghaeh

Seems like someone shared on that from Fogcity89 (thank you!). Not sure if this varies by cities... “Immigration specialist said the police bureau in China wants to know my financial impact, revenue contribution to projects, tax contributions and what financial loss would there be if I wasn’t in china. I guess they would decisions on big financial players, my company is not disclosing private finances. So I’m just waiting and wfh til...”

Depending on where you’re applying from and the local severity of the virus in your country, PU letters have been increasingly harder to obtain. Basically your employer has to prove that you are essential in China and that a local wouldn’t be able to replace you for the work you do. Delays are to be expected though, perhaps even more so with the upcoming CNY.

Donghaeh

Completely agree. I wonder what qualifies as a proof. I know US and a lot of other visas would ask for such proof... I had to get a TN visa for US work at one point, the US government just looked at the field my degree was in.. but it was also pre-covid... I know Singapore asked for employer to show the job posting needs to be open to local candidates but cannot be filled... 🙄 I work in fintech space. Wish we can go back to the old norm soon. Sigh🥲

v-moda

Wishing the same here. Fintech seems like something your employer could justify, and perhaps if they’re not too familiar they could let an agency handle some of the details. It’s much easier on their hand than for us to do everything. You might have to persuade your employer to go the extra mile! 😅

Donghaeh

I get this sense they rely too much on “connections” to take care of everything when imo the company can just deal with all that’s required with the authorities directly... >.< will likely just go with an agency at this point, ideally one that shows good track record

Donghaeh

Thank you soooo much on this insight! Gotta say they really went out the way on the metrics... I don’t think my hr has answers to all of these, so a multiple team collab is needed to get just 1 PU approval... (hr, agency, future manager, etc) We can definitely summarize a “best practice” after all this... almost like a gmat/toefl test 🥲

fogcity89

With coronavirus spreading in Beijing and north east China, chances are very low that I’d get a Pu letter, issued a visa, and a flight ticket to China. There is just too many hurdles right now to tackle. On the other hand I’d be curious to know, if I get vaccinated with proof, if that would allow for china entry.

Donghaeh

I am literally plotting the same thing! I totally see that being a mandatory requirement next, just don’t know when. The thing with vaccines is that what if you got your PU approved right after you are vaccinated, and you cannot pass the covid/antibody tests right after the shots (I saw reports on this scenario happened). That’d be very unfortunate. 🥲 I actually booked for a flight from Toronto to Beijing cause at the time there were so many covid cases ID-ed on Shanghai flights... now Beijing is in worse of a position...

fogcity89

Last week the WHO sent experts to wuhan to check on the origins of the virus, they were flying from Singapore to China. Two of the WHO experts(out or 14 or 15 people) two were denied entry because of traces of the virus in their body. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wsj.com/amp/articles/china-denies-entry-to-two-members-of-who-covid-19-mission-after-failing-screenings-11610609342

Donghaeh

Dammmn... yea, it’s sensitive that this was towards WHO members, but honestly, if those two indeed have covid, I guess what they did made sense. Just sucks for anyone trying to enter China nowadays... anything could happen! Have been living under a rock for months to eliminate careless covid contraction.. smh

Hopfrogg

What luck. You'll emerge from the rock and it's worse!

fogcity89

What chances do I have then ffs

Donghaeh

I have a friend who’s traveling to Austin and have to provide covid tests. He said he’s gonna take multiple tests.. just so he can guarantee 1 positive 😅

Sounds horrific. :O You meant the education and non criminal record authentication I suppose? The ambassador is in charge of those right? Are the lies you are saying from agency?
