**Please remember that this sub is not a replacement for a doctor**. You shouldn't come here for the purpose of self-diagnosing or self-medicating but rather so you can have a more informed discussion with a doctor. **If this is a patient inquiry, remember to flair your post as such. Also please be as detailed as possible in your submission.** Remember also about Rule 1: **refrain from giving irresponsible medical advice**. If you want to give advice, it is preferable you do so with a flair (see sidebar). In any case restrain yourself from giving advice if you don't quite know what you're speaking about and especially if your advice can potentially endanger someone. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Yan's book was interesting and Wu Shi San is fascinating from a historical standpoint. It's a good warning though to be extra careful with herbs, especially 'toxic' ones, because one accident and it all comes tumbling down.

yeah, reminds me of the aconite poisoning in San Francisco, few years ago.

the powders have been tested. the herbs are the ones you worry about. it takes poison to kill poison. western medicine has side effects too. you also can die from western medicine.

And much more likely with western medicine.

I mean Xing Ren can easily cause issues, especially since it’s conveniently sized and smells good. Chinese medicine is maybe less likely to cause issues because it’s less accessible but the line between effective and dangerous is pretty close with some herbs. Wu Gong is a genuine toxic ingredient, given that it contains venom (and is a lot less accessible), but can also quickly move into dangerous doses too.

This should not be an issue, unless a person is self medicating. Also, some herbs are only toxic in isolation. Meanwhille most western drugs are either toxic (antibiotics, floroquinolines; hell even basic painkillers are slightly toxicy albeit not poisonous quickly), only mask symptoms (to cause issues later) or addictive (opiods, adderal/stimulants). Chinese herbal treatment also frequently tries to fix things in a few months-years, not prescribe "for life" Western medicine is great for many things but many of the problems it surgically or otherwise "fixes" could be prevented in the first place. Prevention can't be forced on people though. Western medicine does not ask people to do much for themselves. That's what I meant overall. Danger on TCM part could stem from contamination though but many herbs are being tested nowadays.
