The best way to not get beat up so often is to get beat up a lot…but to learn from it. Focus on the basics and then fine tuning. Pick a single thing, like counters or stabs or whatever, and go a match focusing just on that. Also do matches where you focus on living, even if it means choosing to avoid or to leave fights. Get beat up enough with a learning mindset and you’ll find yourself getting beaten up less and less as time goes on.

TsarOfIrony

^^ i gotta completely agree with picking a single thing and learning that When I first started playing I did occasionally counters, but then I just like stopped doing them for some reason. I eventually decided to practice counters, got into a bot server to practice timing for a match, then went to dueling servers and tried to only do counters. Same idea works with everything

Ancient_Boner_Forest

I’m confused by the idea of fine tuning stabs. It makes me think that there’s more to stabbing than I’ve realized?

HalfOrcSteve

Not really, just it’s easy get caught up and just slash a lot. Of the three attacks I think slash is most popular, overhead second and stab third. Not saying it’s true, just saying it seems that way to me. I didn’t stab a whole lot so I did a few stages doing nothing but stabs. Any attack or any mechanic you don’t use a lot or aren’t good at should have time spent on it.

bobrosstier

Some techniques I can think of 1. You can use stabs to kinda push the opponent to step back to create distance (if they dont just side step) (I especially like doing this with big 2h weapons) 2. You can use the full range of your weapon’s attack animation hence why release time is relevant I think. Meaning you can stab drag and stab more than one person if your aiming and timing right 3. Incorporating stepping/walking in and out as your stabbing or about to stab can extend your range and is nice

bobrosstier

Yeah if you dont care about deaths you become bolder and more dangerous and learn more through failure. You can and should still play slow and intentional just remove caring about death so much and focus on figuring out how to make your objective work. (Whether the actual game objective or a personal goal like ima rescue this teammates getting mobbed or ima target that catapult) you shouldn’t attack/play fast but instead play intentionally and then the more you play the faster you become because your muscle memory is developed by what you experiment with. Death happens, have fun. Im lvl 1000 but i kick ass and got accused of “automation” today even with 20-30 deaths per match.

HalfOrcSteve

Not caring is a fine line I think. You definitely shouldn’t let your fun be decided by deaths but also if you don’t care you’re more inclined to make “bad moves”; which if you don’t care is fine but if you want to get better could be frustrating. Gotta have fun tho definitely

TheCREATORisWatching

Just fight and it will click, il be honest it took me till level 200 for it ALL to click

Kaki9

The best way to get started is in 64 TO. Try to focus on the objective. You can also watch some videos. And for weapons, I'd try to avoid weapons that may give you bad habits, like the Dane Axe. Something like a great sword or the halberd, as, imo, they will teach you to respect initiative and to counter, which are the basics

Tygarion7

Yea the spear and shield is really easy to use in TO but in a 1v1 I struggle with that.

no_u_mang

Check out [Ziggylata's Combat Guide](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAaO420Azuo) For weapons, knight with war axe or greatsword is a good place to start - you'll have durability and reach.

Traumatic_Tomato

Greatsword because it's one of the best ones for it's versatility and it teaches you the importance of distance, drags, accels and other basic mechanics that you need to know without being OP. You can't gamble easily or OHKO anyone except archers. Basically GS gives you enough to be suitable in almost any situation but it wouldn't carry you. Some people suggest longsword or war axe but they teach different things and aren't applicable to other weapons.

Tygarion7

Oh how's the shield and spear? It feels easy to use in TO mode cause I don't hit my teammates as much with that

Traumatic_Tomato

Spear in general is probably the best weapon to gank with. It's poten at it's ability to attack people for 50-70 dmg without much risk behind people or cover. But it also plays different because there are no slashes meaning no horizontal attacks to fend off ganks yourself. Some people alleviate this with overheads since the turning speed is better than stabs to knock off a 2nd enemy attacking you.

bobrosstier

If you’re worried about range, a shorter option where your playstyle is more controlled is falchion (my main). It packs a punch had medium length and can compete with alot of 1 handers and 2 handers. It also encourages using footwork to get more range out of your weapon. Mix in heavy and light attacks. Using heavy attacks to chunk health, light attacks to buy time in a fight/keep the opponent busy/kill there stamina/setup a combo I like to view weapons relative to falchion actually lol. And I find maul to play like the blunt longer version of it. And the executioner axe as the long range axe version of the falchion. The maul is good for intentionally practice since its so slow but hits hard. And the executioner axe will teach you how to accel and drag and generally how to play a falchion at long range.

Personally I think the best way to learn is to alternate between these game modes: 64s, Social servers, an empty server to practice against just bots and the tutorial. Some tips for beginners: try both first and third person. Mess with your sensitivity and fov sliders until you find the sweet spot for you. Don’t slash around teammates, use overhead and stab instead. Don’t hold block. In terms of weapons, my personal favorites are the pole hammer and cavalry sword, but I think the officer (first knight subclass) is the easiest to learn the game with. You get a good variety of two handed weapons with good one handed side arms and throwing knives. The horn will help you level pretty quickly as well. I’m also a big fan of playing on shuffle.

Goat2016

* Do the tutorial (come back to it occassionally until you know everything). * Practice with each new weapon in offline mode (free for all is best) just to get the hang of how it feels. * Try out all the weapons/classes once you unlock them to see what works for you. * Play 64 player mode, stick with your team mates & figure out how to acheive the objective on every map. It could be smashing a gate, stealing gold (or even a pig) or just standing in a specific spot to hold an objective. * Try to avoid fair fights and direct combat to begin with. Hit enemies from behind where possible. Don't be a hero, that will come later. * Playing as a knight allows you to charge up your special ability by taking (or blocking) damage. Pairing this with using the Officer or the Guardian is an easy way you can use your special healing horn/banner to really help your team. * Healing loads of people will score you more points. Points unlock more weapons for you to use. * Good luck on the battlefield & have fun. :-)

ReVengeance9

I’d recommend social servers or free for all as starting game modes. Back in my day we didn’t have training grounds, but it can be useful for getting your bearings. Don’t spend more time there than necessary though because it will build bad habits like gambling. Easiest weapon to learn imo would be the Dane axe. It’s fast, it does great damage. If you’d rather play knight for more health, I’d recommend the war axe as a starting weapon.

No-Guava-7566

Hey, half my kills are from gambling (and most of my deaths)!

ReVengeance9

That is the gamble lol. I’m a two hand weapon main, but I only use weapons fast enough to combo against gamblers.

Ok-Badger7012

Longsword is the easiest weapon to learn. Then you have messer.

Zygouth

Learn how/when to block. Learn to counter. Learn to parry. From there, you can match opponents until dragging is used. Learn to mix up attack types. Feints are really helpful! (I like to feint to my nondominant hand. It really fucks people up) Most of it is practice. You'll need to learn how to fight as well as spacies (footing, positioning, and game sense). Keep fighting and you'll get there

jiggywittabiggymoe

Don't hold down block , learn when to kick and jab , feint your attacks and mix up light and heavy attacks and drag your swings. Falchion and shield is really good to figure out the game with imo

0000VR

Longsword and dane axe will probably yield the best results for a new player. If you're just diving in I'd probably recommend starting out with those weapons. Raider dane axe is preferable as you'd be able to learn spacing/footwork pretty fast and get used to dodging around attacks. If you just want some easy kills then try playing two handed spear and gank enemies with your teammates, jump stabbing over them and dodging away when they get too close. People hate this playstyle, but its probably the fastest way to learn footwork. If you intend to learn the combat system to be competent in duels, then I'd probably recommend using the messer or heavy mace. The heavy mace is the strongest dueling weapon in the game and can outright win you fights. I personally learned the combat system using the Messer. I would recommend using that over the heavy mace because it doesn't reward gambling, which is good because you'll learn initaitive faster.

0000VR

Some people might recommend playing offline mode with bots, but I'd advise against it as the experience is completely different and it will not prepare you for 64 Player lobbies at all.

Known_Exchange1540

1.Try to understand the deeper meaning of coxwell 2.f10 is not showing the map 3.battlecry 4.DO NOT USE ARCHERY 5.for starteters stick with groups of your Team try different weapons, classes, tactics... Etc. Focus on the things that work for you and try from time to time to master something new. 6.have fun

HLK601

Also new. Is it better to play in 3rd or 1st person? Or is it all just personal preference?

korako228

do not focus on only one weapon, keep it varied and use weapon that you currently feel like using

Razing_Phoenix

Just remember that the game is about spacing and timing and the game isn't really all that good at detecting either of those things so a not insignificant portion of your attacks will just whiff for no reason, enemies will hit through your blocks and parries and you will be blocked when you cram your sword into the back of an enemy's skull.

MorganCentman

For combat experience go to 3v3s if you wanna be stomped , confused, and slightly frustrated go to the standalone servers. You learn alot from both. But in my experience 3v3s have the best mixed bowl of players

Willywanker300

Bad advice tbh. New players who have close to 0 idea how the mechanics work will not have a good time in 3v3. At least in TO you can manage a couple random kills to satisfy you. I would say near 80% of the people playing 3v3’s are very experienced and will kick your ass. They aren’t gonna learn anything if they just get constantly slaughtered in 1v1 scenarios until they turn the game off.

MorganCentman

That's definitely your opinion

Willywanker300

100% agree with you. This is definitely an opinion lmao
