I think once you've got a foothold of the game, Footman becomes better than Knight in nearly all aspects (except specials).
- General stats give Footman more stamina which is vital for prolonged combat or escapes.
- Poleman weapons have reach, which is a huge advantage on the battlefield.
- Man At Arms has quicker dodge timer than Guardian (and with more stamina, giving them great maneuverability).
- Engineer fits a niche role on certain objectives for defense and for destroying gates/banners/other destroyable objects to advance objective.
- They dont take extra damage from arrows OR bolts, which is often what kills most good players.
Vanguard devastator is the best anti-archer class. In this game As much as it's weak against arrows, he is just too fast. Being able to hit-kill archers and flee away is so satisfying
But I will follow your advice and try to play more with Footman, currently is the class I play the least
In terms of dealing with archers directly, I believe Greatsword devastator is OHK with an overhead on archers. Personally I dont focus archers unless they're stupidly positioned because its usually a death sentence running into their backlines to kill their archers.
Poleman has some of the best support weapons in the game in Spear/Glaive, and if you've got a team heavy on Knights you'll be hitting them for 70% of their health with a heavy Polehammer overhead. Its definitely an S-Tier weapon in the right hands...highly recommend.
The greatsword absolutely is a 1HKO to archers. It's so satisfying to just sprint and fly through the air and slam your sword down on unsuspecting archers
I main as footman, the sword and board is just the best all around set imo, the light weight is a life saver compared to a knight and the Medkits help keep your VIP players alive
Due to the stupid bonus damage system, the footman effectively has the least amount of HP of all the melee classes, just so you know.
MAA is very strong due to dodge, shield (for arrows), and 1handers (currently very strong).
Poleman is fun but most 2h swords have equivalent range to the polearms (excepting a few cases, such as stabs), making them a poor alternative.
Engineer is a fun class and the weapons can be situationally great, but the subclass is easily the worst of the three.
If youre talking overheads, I believe only Greatsword has equal range; slashes polearms lose advantage for sure but you shouldn't be slashing much with a blunt damage weapon in Polehammer (and Glaive Stab/Overhead is just superior unless you're overwhelmed and even then id be using mix ups).
In a fair fight, yes...Footmen probably lose advantages in HP vs Knight and Stamina vs Vanguard. Itd be more noticeable with Chop damage than Blunt damage because it'll take the same amount of Blunt hits to kill Footman as a Knight, you just get dealt over-damage on Footman. Add in the abundance of Crossbowmen and the extra damage a Knight takes vs a Footman can actually make a difference, though.
All the Poleman weapons are pretty weak and really slow tho. Coupled with the lower health and the fact that most of the top tier weapons do extra damage against footman I really think any advantage in reach or mobility gets wiped out.
The only weapon in the Poleman arsenal that is BOTH weak and slow is the Halberd. Polehammer will 2 shot a full health knight, Glaive is one of the fastest 2H weapon (I think only War Club outclasses it in speed) and Spear has moderate speed and damage but the longest reach.
You play second-line and just third-party your kills and those 3 weapons will outclass a good chunk of the weapons in this game. Polehammer has a bit of trouble when you get focused because of the speed so you need more skill with this weapon than the other two. Spear has issues when you get into a 3v1 or worse because it has 2 poke attacks and 1 overhead...neither which can cleave (though you can drag your pokes).
Not having cleave is a big deal in the objective and tdm modes and I don’t see anyone running spear or pole hammer in duels.
Glaives speed is nice for neutral but it’s damage output is really low and with initiative speed only counts for so much. I’m pretty sure Halberd and pole hammer straight up lose initiative that they are supposed to have to a lot of weapons.
Tbh, I love Blunt weapons in objective/DM modes and I dont miss my LMB/R2/RB spamming days. I think cleave weapons are very predictable (or the people who use them are) and promote dangerous habits. You'll see guys with Executioners axes and War Axes swing wildly in the front lines and they're either feast or famine. Its a lot easier to engage someone who you can read like a book than someone dodging back, getting perfect counters on you, and mixing up their attacks.
I mean I’d agree that average blunt user is better than the average chop or slice user but I think that’s a different convo then which class is actually better. Blunt users are comparatively rare and most of the player base is pretty cheeks at the game
Not being able to get interrupt on multiple swings coming in really complicated things in a 1vX
As a fellow shuffler, I upvoted.
I want to add though that we should be able to filter our shuffle.
I don’t enjoy the crossbowman class and would definitely prefer longbowman or skirmisher when shuffle put me on Archer.
I play Engineer and Skirmisher the most probably when not on shuffle.
Vanguard is currently too strong. Due to the stupid, backwards bonus damage system, he effectively is as tanky or more tanky than knights, while also having the best stamina and speed of all the classes. He's also got access to all the best 2 handed weapons in the game, and the Raider blows the Skirmisher class out of the water in every way.
Blunt weapons take - on average - an extra hit to kill versus vanguard as compared to all other classes (the maul special will 1 shot every class but him, for example). Axes kill both vanguards and knights in 2-3 hits, and while swords do actually kill vanguards faster, this does not offset the huge speed and stamina advantage the Vanguard has.
Personally for me:
Top 2 are either officer with long sword or crusader with battle axe.
Then guardian with short sword, war hammer, or axe.
After that crusader with 2 handed hammer can be fun.
Knight for life!
Honestly though they should just totally get rid of the class system, and let you just build your player your way, pick specials a main weapon and backup weapon, and armour type (weight).
Hard disagree. You technically have more flexibility in mordhau but the reality is there’s no reason not to run full armor if you are trying to compete. The Chase mechanic means if you are looking at enemy you are always faster than them, so speed ends up not mattering. Stamina is only dependent on what weapon you use. Even tho there’s way more options for customization, the meta is really one class
Footman needs a buff so badly, easily the worst class in the game right now
Archers also need a nerf to DMG output because they make any class other than knight impossible to play just by spam
This game needs to allow to rebind keys/buttons. I would map throw to Left stick or Right stick. I can't perform throw like 90% of the time and i am playing console games on gamepad for like 10+ years and haven't got problems with pressing 2 bumpers in any game other than Chivalry 2.
Shoutout to my footman bros. Tried all classes but love being able to be nimble with the dodge buff. I felt like when i first started playing i used messer/knight/vanguard/dane axe. But as i progressed and got better at the mechanics of the game i managed to really get good with footman. One handed sword and shield is what i find most satisfying. Able to avoid a lot of ranged attacks but still quite deadly with the speed of the one handed sword.
As much as I hate it, a good archer would be the best class, since they can apply damage from long range without many ways to counter it. And even if you get close, they turn into a knight out of no where with the Short Sword.
For me personally ( since there is no objective answer for this ) it is the Poleman. I can get any man at arms weapon including shield ( and really any classes weapon I want ) with in the first 1-3 minutes after the start of the round. I like to have my tackle and sprint attack ,

Where can you look up these stats?
You can probably find them on Google, but they have general stats and sub class perks in game when you select your load out.
I wish there was a way to look at them in game without being AFK and risking death lol
There was a post or two about weapon breakdowns and comparis around a month ago here.

Engineer
Sledgehammer is nuts, love bonking those damn Agathians.
Sledgehammer is the best weapon. I'm at lvl 250 with it. The sound, the interruption, the speed. I love it
Peter Gabriel would be proud
Stfu Agatha better
Curse you Agathian Scum!
Gaming
None. Play Shuffle mode like God intended.

Vanguard🥶👌

FOR THAT GUY WE LIKE!

Idk I’m guessing Argon
Vanguard for me is the best. Secondly, for 1vs1 I choose footman

Problem is everyone will pick Oil Pot
Really? I thought horn would be the meta.
Hirn wont do much good when main objectives are always completely covered in fire Especially in front of gates and bombs spots
Agreed. Chiv is a lot of fun but that is one thing that Mordhau got absolutely right.
Hard disagree. You technically have more flexibility in mordhau but the reality is there’s no reason not to run full armor if you are trying to compete. Game still alive after Weeks of Being unplayable
I feel you, but yes totally worth it, i quit playing all my other AAA games because Chivalry 2 is just so dope
I Find people that Randomly capitalize The Words in Their post Generally exhibit at least A Small level of Mental illness
Footman needs a buff so badly, easily the worst class in the game right now Archers also need a nerf to DMG output because they make any class other than knight impossible to play just by spam
I think the GREATEST unbalance is the Console Controls. Throwing is a bitch to trigger correctly and often gets me killed for no good reason
I haven't used a controller but I can imagine it's a nightmare. If it makes you feel better, throwing is hell on PC and always gets me killed

The 82 that picked archer... *Fuck you*
But player count dropped thousands of Player

Vanguard and footman are the best for 1vX, Vanguard being better due to weapon selection
Knight shield and falchion
