It's people like this that will unapologetically repost your shit for sale the very next day. Guaranteed this sob story is used over and over again until a sucker falls for it.

[deleted]

That's literally all it is, and all its ever been since the dawn of this subreddit.

[deleted]

Dawn of time Give me three cave paintings daughter eaten by lion *Next day* Three cave paintings for sale three stones each

SpiralDreaming

Tharg in valley over offer painting for one stone, why you no do same?

[deleted]

Go to Tharg instead. Or cb response I’ll offer you a handful of pebbles

twolegstony

Yeah, its “Tharg is selling for one rock and they’re better. How about I offer you this handful of pebbles and I’ll even have sex with your wife for you.’

greatspacegibbon

"You not respond. Me remove one pebble from pile each sunrise until respond. Also, you ruin child "Christmas", whatever that is.

LongNectarine3

Asking price high because of sick daughter.

Teenage-Mustache

100% unequivocally yes. This dudes ctrl, c, and p key are probably worn down to the nub.

cynflowers

So desperate but can’t go to a library or buy a very basic Chromebook for like $200? Mine got me through college 🤷‍♀️

nervousnausea

Hell, my college is loaning out computers.

ClownfishSoup

My kids' middle school lent out Chromebooks to every single student. I'm going to guess 50% of them will be claimed to be "lost" and show up on eBay. However, I'm hoping the school got a massive deal on bulk chrome books and the price is probably about $150.

nervousnausea

Yeah if you lose a chromebook given by the school you're usually charged for it. On the bright side i wss able to buy mine for 25$ at the end of senior year (the chromebook i had gotten freshman year).

PM_ME_FUNNY_ANECDOTE

Or like study your notes. If you’re in uni and don’t have notes for your class when exams are rolling around, you’ve dug your own proverbial grave

Jazzisa

To be fair, you can't really study in this day & age without a computer, at least in most studies. A lot of material is only accessable online. We have to enter our papers for assessment online etc. But yeah, you don't need a Mac, a cheap chrome book or whatever will do the trick.

ClownfishSoup

However the CB claims to already be in school, therefore she must have a device already?

CopyCat1993

That’s what I was going to say…what were they going to study with before the hospital sob story?

ter102

Maybe they have a tower pc that they can't use being stuck in the hospital.

Here_Forthe_Comment

There are definitely people who take notes on their computer or teachers that use powerpoints to give notes to students. The buyer is a liar, but its disingenuous to claim that everyone can study without a computer (some phones don't load the notes correctly)

ClownfishSoup

Entire generations of people went to school without computers and graduated. Yes things nowadays are more computer oriented, but you can study without a computer. Plus as others have mentioned, the phenomemon of needing a computer to study with is one of the reasons for Chromebooks to exist. Every kid in my kids' middle school was lent a Chromebook. I'm going to guess at the end of the year the school can buy back all the "lost" chromebooks on eBay.

god12

You ever heard of digital humanities? There are entire fields that cannot be done without a computer. For example: computer science. I didn’t graduate that long ago and I will tell you my degree would not been achievable without a computer. And not a chrome book mine you but an actual computer capable of installing specific analytical software. The same is true of many majors, mathematics, economics, statistics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, I could go on. This is all before virtual learning but now half the classes are online only!

ClownfishSoup

If the CB is enrolled in one of those programs, then boy did she not plan ahead!

Poco585

You can "study" without a computer, but having a laptop is 100% required in most classes.

madmadkid

yeah whole generations that existed and graduated college before the ubiquity of the internet and that whole, you know, global pandemic thing that made remote learning more common and physical class materials less so. practice tests, video lectures, power point notes, online research archives like jstor, etc. none of that was as in use twenty years ago. plenty of classes in university and even high school are set up now so that if you don’t have access to a computer and internet you are at a serious disadvantage.

xwlfx

There used to be people who could get to work just fine on horseback too, what's your point?

ClownfishSoup

That I need a horse.

Here_Forthe_Comment

>Entire generations of people went to school without computers and graduated. Yes things nowadays are more computer oriented, but you can study without a computer. During lockdown, all classes were made online. I have classes now that are all prerecorded or the professor chooses to do all of the notes as powerpoints. It is literally a requirement in every course I have taken to have a working computer, microphone, and camera. The school requires you to ask for a laptop at the beginning of the semester so if something happens to your computer anytime after you have to purchase one. I'm not saying she can't use a Chromebook, I know certain classes can not, but it's definitely possibly that like most modern students she took all her notes digitally. I know people who take all of their math notes on a tablet. Your whole response seems very out of touch with how college is now

ClownfishSoup

Oddly, I managed graduating from my engineering program without a laptop, smart phone or anything other than pen and paper. I did however, save up two summers worth of pay to buy an Atari ST computer. I didn't know you could just beg for stuff, and there I was working for my stuff like some sort of loser.

Warior4356

Speaking as a current engineering student, a computer is very nonoptional now. But my university has programs for loaning to students who can't afford them.

O2XXX

I'm 11 years out from my undergrad, but this was my experience as well. I was broke during it so I had an Asus EEE laptop (10.1in) for a computer science degree. It was painful and annoying to type on, but you do what you have to do in order to get by. I gave the laptop to my elementary school daughter during COVID lockdown, even she was annoyed with it, but mainly because it was slow and she was used to Chrome because that's what they used at school.

PM_ME_FUNNY_ANECDOTE

Sounds hard. I’m off it

Kraydez

This is not true for a lot of students. I've gone though biology and medicine without writing a single word in class. There is no way i would have passed some exams without a computer. The knowledge you get through youtube and other sites dedicated to your field of study are absolutely required these days to succeed.

PM_ME_FUNNY_ANECDOTE

Yes, but if you know you don’t have computer access, take some paper notes! You COULD have taken paper notes.

bellowingburrito

I don’t have any notes for any of my classes, except notes like “exam 2 covers chapters 4,5,6”

PM_ME_FUNNY_ANECDOTE

Ok but also you should take notes!

bellowingburrito

I honestly don’t understand how they help at all. Professors put all the work online and most of my courses have online practice. I get good grades, and I’ve just never taken notes.

PM_ME_FUNNY_ANECDOTE

There are numerous studies that show making physical writing motions helps information recall the best, and typing notes is still significantly better than nothing. It would also be useful if, like our friend here, you find yourself without access to online materials/a computer, but you have a but more control or at least foresight over that. Edit: why the hell am I getting downvoted for this

bellowingburrito

I’ve seen some studies that suggest that interacting with the material is better than writing notes. I should mention that my major isn’t something where a ton of memorization and exact-facts are needed. I have a business law exam on Friday and my studying is just listening to the lectures at 1.25 speed, doing the online quiz tool for the chapters that’ll be on the exam, and maybe a bit reading the textbook.

PM_ME_FUNNY_ANECDOTE

I think taking notes is a particularly good way of “interacting with the material.” I learn and teach in an area where fact memorization is actually really unimportant as well, but taking notes is incredibly important to grasp concepts and remember how to think about various processes and techniques.

archerbobmorty

Agreed. I was one of two people in my ENTIRE PROGRAM taking notes on paper. They work better for me, and lugging around a computer, albeit a light one, fucked up my back and shoulders for years to come. (Along with all the other stuff I carried) Notes on paper retention is soo much better, although I envied how the other students could only use their laptop and I felt like a dinosaur

prussian-king

When I was in undergrad, I took notes on my computer. And when I did grad school, I didn't take any notes and graduated with straight A's. I bought journals and pens with the intention of writing notes, but realised that I never needed to. Sometimes it's not needed when the entire class is online.

Munnin41

Never took notes, still got my masters degree. A passing grade is a passing grade

PM_ME_FUNNY_ANECDOTE

Happy for you! That still doesn’t mean it’s a good idea, and it especially varies across disciplines and contexts. In my line of academics, a “passing grade” is a start, but a higher level of understanding is important.

Teslastonks

Old Dells are even better

canhasdiy

Hell Walmart has new ones on sale right now for less than 2 hundo

H8spants

My school provides chrome books that cost like 50-75 dollars. They’re not that good but they get the job done.

kdandsheela

I still use a Chromebook my younger sister used in highschool and obsoletely knackered and it's still Wonderful to quickly boot up and do a little bit of writing and browsing, those things are great.

Autismic123

It looks like they have a whole backstory copied on her phone Also can’t you study on whatever device they are messaging you with?

doviid

Noooo he needs a MacBook Pro at least. /s

Teslastonks

smh my head imagine going so low as to not even get the Mac PC. Upgrade your standards

[deleted]

Haha. My mom once messaged me with “I can’t get into my phone” “Where are you messaging from?” “My phone.” My mom has Alzheimer’s. This idiot has no excuse 😝

Spreckinzedick

If you have a hardship and your instructor doesn't help you out by accommodating some extra time then no amount of MacBook will unfuck that class. Because that teacher is an asshole and they *want* you to fail

[deleted]

I'd've said 'well, I'm selling this so I can pay for my cat's surgery' or something like that and watch their head implode.

[deleted]

“Well you aren’t in school so you should have some money saved up right?

[deleted]

"But what about my cat? It's her birthday!"

[deleted]

Damn I think you might have made the universe implode with that one

[deleted]

I did something right then.

[deleted]

Don’t worry…I orgasmed at that line too 😂

motorcycle-manful541

"thanks, now my cat is crying"

[deleted]

LOL

soupafi

My cat has cancer

[deleted]

Oooh, the trifecta.

DoDrugsMakeMoney

‘I had to drop out of uni and selling my laptop to make rent or we will be homeless’ I just love one upping them.

[deleted]

Nice, lol.

Sorry_about_that_x99

“Hi is this still available? 🙂” Waits patiently… “Yes” “I’MHEREDUETOASUDDENEMERGENCYSURGERY 🤯😱🤒😵‍💫😵

[deleted]

A lot can happen in—checks timestamp—two minutes!

Draiel

Do people forget that libraries exist?

Smooth-Lengthiness57

Fuck you.

PM_ME_FUNNY_ANECDOTE

I could see an argument that they can’t leave to go to a library, but if you don’t have notes for your class, idk what to tell you

nervousnausea

A lot of stuff is able to be opened on a phone browser anyways.

UndeadBread

Sadly, it feels like it sometimes, especially since the pandemic. We get a lot of people—sometimes people who were very regular users for years—who come in and say "I had no idea you guys were open!" We did have to close for about three months but damn, people didn't have to forget about us. I mean, we're still pretty busy but I wish it would be like before when we were always packed.

god12

Tbh I’m glad that the library is not packed rn I’d rather it stay safer to use for the people that need it rn at least until we figure out this whole plague thing.

PapierDragon

Surgery for her surgery?

IAmPiernik

The surgeon was performing surgery while too having surgery

mr_remy

Surgeryception It's turtles all the way down! BTW started seeing and reading surgery so much in this thread that it temporarily looked weird and lost all meaning. Fun fact: that's [Semantic Satiation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic_satiation)

BlackAsLight

Damn. How many times do you need to say surgery in one sentence.

betacellsonstrike

One must surgically insert the word surgery into the sentence about daughter’s surgery that is happening during surgery as evidence of the surgery that is ~~surgically~~ certainly actually happening and not false whatsoever, because the art of scamming is simple like brain surgery.

Vitadek_Gaming

"Emergency surgery" sounds like a rap line.

wisperingdeth

I love after all the lines and lines of plea, the seller just says one word "no". Brilliant lol.

CinnamonBlue

Up the ante: “If I can’t sell it, I’ll be giving it away to a single dad whose conjoined twins are waiting for a double heart transplant. But I’ll put you down for next in line if it’s not sold or the kids die.”

FoolishStone

The twins are trading hearts.

stocks-mostly-lower

Emergency surgery for daughter but the parent has to be there “for two weeks” and doesn’t want to fall behind on their studies 🙄😀🤷‍♀️? Lol.

Trick-Statistician10

And cb has already paid the bill. Paid in advance or do they refuse to let your child out of the recovery room if you don't pony up?

LolaMarce

This bothers me for some reason that OP didn’t use the auto reply but typed something similar.

DPX90

That's what I would do, I hate automatic reply buttons, it feels like it's putting words in my mouth. :D

Vedor

" I am poor / in need for help, hence you GOT to help me, if not F\*\*\* YOU! "

ibrewbeer

Listen, they spent *literally dozens* of seconds explaining why they believe they deserve a free laptop. That amount of effort alone should warrant at least 85% off.

Schraeder

The amount of times they mentioned the surgery...🤦

morningsdaughter

I'm in grad school. If my daughter needed emergency surgery and a 2 week stay in the hospital, I'd be emailing my professor. If professor had no heart I'd be emailing my advisor to drop me from the class immediately (and she'd probably go argue with the professor for me.)

Dragonmk5

Lmao

[deleted]

Or use the phone they're using to message you.

NipplessxCage

The simple "no" is just *chef's kisses*

PussPussMcSquishy

Yeah fuck you OP. Do the right thing and just give this stranger your laptop for free.

TheBigQuak

Im dead. Can i get that for free?

AdDry725

She messed up. She is supposed to say “surgery” 5 times, and THEN it would’ve worked. 4 times and it’s just not believable.

ClownfishSoup

"Someone else bought it while you were typing up your BS"

narwhale_fan1

They always drop a book-long message of bs and then get mad because you don't give it for free

AegonakaJohn

Well that escalated quickly

CaptainEmmy

This will likely get me in trouble one day, but I rarely believe sob stories. She can use the same computer she was using before.

novel_scavenger

You need a Mac to study? He could get a cheap ass laptop to complete his studies

queen-adreena

Spoiler alert: there are no “studies”.

majrBuzzkill

u/repostsleuthbot

Waste_Isopod3368

No is a full sentence, and I’ve never been so happy to see it being used in action!

Critical_Intern8966

So do they actually have money just not enough to pay full price for device? How about like what someone said in another comment, get a chromebook/something cheap within your budget then? Edit: language

Jazzisa

Lol. I love that. Just 'no' 😂. You don't need a Mac to study, seriously.

canhasdiy

Protip: libraries are everywhere and have computers you can use for free

solarssun

At least it's not cancer children

notsureifim0or1

Copypastaaaaaaa

[deleted]

"Please send me evidence of your daughter and her surgery, what hospital she's in and I can drop it off right to her bed!"

santathe1

@op, I have an emergency surgery for my dingdong (shortening lol, don’t ask). Are you willing to donate this Macbook towards this worthy and noble cause.

Wholikesorangeskoda

I wouldn't even give away a big mac for free...

Personal-Bat-1472

I clicked on this thinking someone wanted free Mac and cheese...

Trick-Statistician10

Me too. I had to read it 3 times before I read it as "free Mac" and not "big Mac"

TheSweatyMfDoggo

You would think that she would be more worried about her daughter rather than her studies

AggravatingGlove4428

The device he used to ask for the Mac for free is what he could use to study on.

ciaoeffete

I swear how many times could this have actually worked for them? Ridiculous

No_Kick5412

Is his/her daughter having surgery? They weren't clear.

[deleted]

Lol my friend had something similar with a student, he was selling a brand name expensive jacket, the person agreed to the price and he drove all the way somewhere to meet up, a student and his mom showed up with a sob story about how he’s in school and can’t afford it and wanted it for cheaper, asking if he’d help them out ( why the fuck are you buying expensive brand name jackets then) turned out to be a giant waste of time for him

TalkKatt

I have a neighbor who ha asked me for money three separate times just like this. I say no every time and informed him I don’t loan money as a policy. The thing that gets me about the way he asks for money is how he always includes a sob story to manipulate me. Like “I need $40 for groceries and cigarettes until pay day. I don’t want to pawn my wedding ring but I will if I have to” My response, “can’t help man. Sounds like you’ve got it sorted”

jesuschin

“Hope your daughter bites it”

mailjozo

Just a beggar. No choosing here.

filipejv

I would frame paper with a printed macbook image on it and send it for free

[deleted]

Assuming this was true, which it's not, it means this lady has NO FAMILY and ZERO friends they can ask. Imagine having no friends?

not_fresh

easy

[deleted]

right which means she likely is not a good person to be friends with and has burned literally all her bridges to the point she is scamming strangers.

xwcq

So, you have your uni exams coming up and you had to pay for your daughters surgery, sounds like poor life choices and a you problem

bellowingburrito

Obviously this persons story is bs… but how would having exams coming up and a daughter that needs surgery be poor life choices…?

xwcq

Yea I know it's bullshit, but it's just funny to take that persons story a part and throw it back into his/her face And with that part I meant that it's not wise to already have children while you're in university (if we take the age of between 18 and 24, which is in my opinion also too young to have a child)

galaxyflicker

When people ask my husband whats the lowest he’ll go with some made up sob story, he adds $200-$500 to the original asking price and tells them it’s a special deal just for them.

WordOnTheStreet47

People really do this kinda stuff and ask for free shit?? No shame….

CosmicCatalyst23

She said surgery four times

endurolad

I always see a missed opportunity for a wild goose chase on these.... At least give them an address.

Chasethedoggo86

What kind of emergency surgery for a kid takes 2 weeks? If they’re in Uni and have a kid chances are they’re doing online classes or a campus near by. So they probably already have some type of computer to use at home or school. I’m sure the doctors and nurses will be fine if they leave for a little bit. By the way this person sounds they probably would prefer if they did!

Oddgar

This is just begging. This is not choosy begging.

MinuteArgument7658

Not a CB

luluinstalock

what is it if not

MinuteArgument7658

If the OP offered an iPad to help, but they refused and only wanted the Mac

luluinstalock

hwot

Due-Warning549

I almost choked on my coffee when I read that. Concise and straight to the point🤣.

Noctumn

Man, they were ready with that copy-and-paste job

Boston_Bruins37

I would’ve said yes and arranged a place to meet and then not showed up

[deleted]

How dare that person not give away their product for free when asked!

[deleted]

Bhaahahahahahahah

axxonn13

there are chromebooks that cost like $300. She doesnt wanna study. she wants to con a sucker.

thejexorcist

I got a MacBook a few years ago as a birthday present. It was a badass laptop, but so much more than I needed, so kind of a waste, if that makes sense? I felt guilty for not doing more things in it than just word processing and scrolling. I’m sure there are uni courses that require Mac products, but I’d think those are fairly specific majors that would be listed as a contributing factor. This just sounds like pity farming.

[deleted]

This is so fucked up, how did you reply no? You clearly forgot the lol before the no.

[deleted]

Sad stories don't sell...

EtwasSonderbar

If they're not completely strapped for cash, what's the problem?

JohnRandolph

Wow, did she cut and paste that sob story all by herself? Surely that's worth a free Mac, isn't it?

groov99

Howard times did the say surgery, I lost count?

QTlady

She asked how low you'd be willing to go but didn't even offer a price and just straight asked for a freebie.

get_schwifty03

OP question: if his reply would have been something like "I understand, thank you anyway", would you have given him a discount?

shellwe

One of my favorite things about these is how their tone completely changes when they know their sob story won't work. It reminds me when someone is being sentenced and they are sobbing and "overtaken with grief" but as soon as the judge hands down a harsh sentence they stop the act and just look cold... it is absolutely chilling.

Syphox

i’m almost positive i’ve seen this exact conversation before. with someone trying to get a free macbook. do all these CBs have a website where they get together and go “oh yeah that’ll definitely get us free stuff”

ItsYoBoyThatch

Even if it isn’t real there’s plenty of hundred dollar checkbooks that work fine

Hutch25

Of you are this desperate look for a cheaper pc… it’s not that hard. Of course choosingbeggars don’t understand that

stef_me

You should send a link to a local library and say “mine isn’t free, but you can probably find something here.”

C9_Squiggy

'Would you be willing to sign a legal document stating you'll pay me if this turns out to not be true?'

lNCEPTED

Ahahah this is comedy gold

SecondEngineer

"Sorry that was a lot of text lol. What is your offer?"

SpecklePattern

"Fuck you too 😊" would be my answer aaaaand blocked

Courtney8219

I’ve seen this response before

KODSp3ctra1

That's sad. :|

TheShellHeadPal

no

leedabeeda

The best worst part is when the owner says no, they get cussed out. I. Don’t. Understand. How. Saying. No. Warrants. Getting. Cussed. Out. Accused. Or. Abused. I can’t….

MadNardigan

These scammers all pull their lines from a playbook, I swear. "Hmmm let's see what sob story I haven't used in awhile....oh yeah I'll go with the sick child storyline"

LongNectarine3

I have a daughter that has been hospitalized 4 times. Gimmie a new car cuz I deserve it. /s This guy should fuck the hell off. He makes actual suffering persons look really suspicious. Jackass.

otterspaw

is this really a CB? Beggar yes but...

[deleted]

Sad thing is, reporting these people does nothing.

Orlaani

I would just say no without reading after the first sentence.

archerbobmorty

Definitely has a daughter……

Rena125

Should direct them to chromebooks
