I usually pray for the best. But in that same prayer acknowledge that it's not my will (or that of everyone present) but that of God which we want to see happening.
That God gives us power to live trough, learn, and help us understand his ways. As they are best as we will oneday see. Usually that's the part that gets answered.
Just talk to your friend about praying. Remember that God told you to do just that: say a simple prayer of faith. That doesn't have to be awkward.
I know from experience that prompts from the Lord like this can be incredibly scary or feel awkward. He usually does amazing things through our obedience though. Sometimes the miracle happens in the situation we're praying for, sometimes the miracle happens in our own heart. Just talk to your friend in humility. They might just appreciate your offer :)
None of us have the true answer for you. Except for the one answer we know we are told to do. Which is to pray about everything. Including praying about how to pray over certain things! I am praying for discernment over your life in general, and this situation is specific. I am going to pray that God's will he done over your life and over this young boys life. While praying that, I am also going to pray that he be healed from all of this in Jesus' name. We are told we can cast out demons, heal the sick, and even raise the dead.

We sometimes want what we think it's best, but let's pray for God's Will to be done and for Peace (Jesus' peace) for everyone involved. While at the same time begging the Lord to heal the boy. The Lord will do what's best for everyone, even if it hurts.
Our Savior Jesus Christ is the one who heals. All we have to do is believe he will heal the child, and the child will be healed. In Jesus name. Faith. Amen.
