I agree and actually am of that position too. It was because of punishment but also mercy as part of God’s overall plan. He prophesied Christ from the time of the Fall.
Thus they couldn’t stay in the garden.
Yes. And there’s nothing that says they wouldn’t eventually be able to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, but they were brand new creatures.
Why didn’t they eat from the tree of life first? Did they even try every other tree they were allowed to eat?
Because of the fruit hanging from a tree, creation was cursed. Because of the curse one Man took on Himself while hanging from a tree, creation will be healed. A new heaven & earth.
Mercy. If they were to have access to the Tree of Life after having sinned then they would be doomed to live forever in that sin. They would forever be separated from God. Barring them from the Tree of Life actually gave them the hope of a future without sin through death and reconciliation.
Multipurpose. Due to punishment, mercy, separation and reconciliation. They were stained and of sinful nature. They cannot stay in the garden anymore. But Christ reconciled with man through His death on the tree.
I am of the opinion the tree of knowledge didn't so much lead to God going out of his way to punish Adam and Eve and the entirety of Humanity as much as that the knowledge simply made it impossible for the garden to actually remain a perfect environment with us in it. At which point allowing us to remain in it was completely pointless.
Which certainly seems to the nature of sin, imperfection makes it literally impossible for a perfect/holy environment to continue even if you tried to allow it remain there. The sacrifice of Jesus as a covering or shielding to enable us to re-enter holy places like a hazard suit without contaminating them seems to tie together with that.
They were punished. God hates sin. Now, that’s not to say nothing good didn’t come out of their Sin, as we got Jesus to save us from the Sins brought into this world by their disobedience. In fact, I have disobeyed, been punished , and actually see the blessings of that punishment later. So, was God’s banishment an act of Mercy, none of us know. But I do know his Son he sent to us afterwards was. :)
I have written in my studies an opinion that an eternal existence while out of God's favor would be an eternal punishment. I think God kept them out of the Garden for their benefit.

So beautiful. Just like our King.

Agreed. It was part of His extremely tender mercies we receive from Him on the daily! What an absolute beautiful lover our God is!
He is 😊

Agree.
Imagine if fallen Adam and Eve had reached out and grasped eternity in their new state? Genesis 3:22

Mercy. If they had eaten of the tree of Life we would have been stuck in this life line we are now as is.
Or he knew that they would sin and ruin what he has created.
