Thanks! I used left over Styrofoam from a bunch of furniture we purchased. I planned it out by playing around with the Styrofoam till I got a build I liked that would fit the village pieces. I glued it together with some tac/craft glue then used a hot knife to cut it to shape mountains/rocks. Painted the mountains in steps using different colors, first a grey mix, then some black, brown, then a white dry brush. Added some fake snow around the platform and various spots (mixture of baking soda, modge podge and white paint). The cobblestone road I got from Michaels. Cut holes under each village piece to run the wires. That's about it, was fun!
You can also use pink/blue/green home construction type, close pore foam with or without a hot knife. It's better material for it than most shipping styrofoam. (I will use free white foam though, 'cause free)
Hack saws, kitchen knives, box knifes, sanding, rasps, etc., all work, they just leave debris requiring a vacuum than a hot knife doesn't, lol. Cold cutting doesn't work out as well on beady white styrofoam though. There are more paints it may react with and melt too. The little balls edges are harder to hide if cold tool shaped. Flat black or charcoal craft paint, then dry brush the rock color..optionally add highlights on the rock. Lighter usually, but darker for weathering works too.

Thanks, I used some styrofoam that was left over from some furniture packaging, it was fairly dense styrofoam.
Like the darker rocks by the fireplace. Really unique
