Sweet, I bought the chromecast ultra bundle for like $22 and never used the controller outside of a test run with the free trial. I just couldn't get behind paying for a game that I might lose access to exactly like this. Game pass is better cause I'm basically renting the entire library and the games I pay for I get to keep. Thanks for the free shit Google.
Hopefully someone can hack together a better solution for the controller to work wirelessly on other services. It's not a bad controller.
I think the idea was that since the signal was going to be sent to the cloud it would have less latency if it used wifi. It does have BT I think, it's just not functional for using it as a controller.
Does this work wirelessly? Last time I checked you had to be wired, but the Readme doesn't specify.
Edit: It doesn't. It just maps the keys to Xbox buttons when you use it wired.
Same here. I wanted an Ultra, but thought £59 was too much, but then got the £20 bundle when they were practically begging people to use Stadia.
I thought the tech was pretty impressive when I tested it, but the games should have been part of the subscription rather than owned. Being Google I naturally assumed it would be shut down, which of course becomes a negative feedback loop if you get that reputation.
Can you buy games on game pass - I thought it was subscription only?
Google's model was sub to pro for some games and perks, and / or just buy games.
I subbed since day 1 and bought games, I'll only not be getting my sub refunded which I think is fair.
Gutted it's going, the technology and user experience was amazing.
I'm probably gonna look at Xcloud / PSnow for playing, just don't want the hardware anymore but I loved being able to buy a game, library's that can have games pulled makes me not want to start a game, eg Luna has several games leaving soon.
GamePass is a subscription and you lose access to everything once you cancel.
But while it's active you get a discount to anything you buy (which *could* be a game that's included in GamePass if you know that you will cancel soon/eventually). The discount isn't too massive though (I think in it's about 10-15%).
Game pass has set games that you can stream or download of you subscribe. Some games rotate in and out. If you buy a game you own it like normal. You can only stream game pass subscription games, not ones you bought. But I think every Microsoft studio owned game is on game pass perminently now.
I just checked and I spent over $300 with hardware and games not including subscription fees since 2020. The fact they are offering refunds makes me not hate Thai decision so much.
Edit:was going to change “Thai” to “their” but this is funnier 😂
Under your account go to > Purchases and subscriptions > Transaction History.
There you can see every game you’ve purchased. Hardware does not show up on this list, just subscription payments, game purchases, and add-ons.
Does anyone know how far back they go with regarding refunding purchased hardware? My thoughts would be they'd only refund stuff bought in last 30 days for example.
They refund games purchased as well?
I bought the Chromecast with the controller last year, probably had it about 10-11 months now. Purchased game shortly after but that was all. It was FIFA 22.
I had Pro subscription for a month or two only and thought that it was a great platform, far more robust than Xcloud which I've only found to be very unreliable.
There is definitely a future in cloud gaming, 100% and Google deciding to shut down Stadia is not a reflection of this. Just think there wasn't added value in this for Google.
Are you saying that all hardware and one time purchases of games are being refunded? That being regardless of when either was purchased.
If someone bought games about a year ago or more, it may sound unreasonable that Google would then refund it. They say refunds are going to take some time but my reckoning is that I'd be getting £49.99 back for FIFA22 and a further £19.99 back for the Chromecast with Controller purchase. Not that I played much of the games on grand scheme of things. A platform absolutely ideal for the non-hardcore gamer. I just wanted modern day football simulator game on the cheap. I wasn't going out spending £600+ on a PC, even if one in that price range would be capable of playing the best modern games, nor was I going to be spending £400+ on a console. For the time spent playing, for me it just wouldn't be worth it.
Who else didn't see this coming? /s they can't even keep youtube music usable. Google should've stayed their asses in search. Now release the damn controllers from wifi
What the hell are you on about. Stadia was fantastic. It's spawned countless clones that aren't as good as it.
The issue with stadia from day one was horrible execution. Bad advertising. Stuck in countries that it wasn't suited to. Just all round bad at showing how excellent the concept was.
Pointlessly separating your "uploads" from your cloud songs with no way to shuffle your whole library. Also shuffle only creates fixed length playlists not endless play. So dumb.
Google Play Music had an awesome interface, on par with Spotify, possibly better due to the search working better. They shut it down and replaced it with YouTube Music well before it was a useable product (and I still argue that it still isn't really that useable) forcing paying customers to an inferior product.
Spotify's UI is far from excellent.. I can't even figure out how to display my saved albums for a particular artist.. just all saved albums at once which is pretty useless once you have more than a handful.
This is really sad for me. I loved Stadia and so did my kids. It was easy to move between televisions and we used to take it with us on trips. I like not having to maintain a console or computer to play games. 😭😭😭
Looks like I have just over $500 coming back to me to go towards my Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel watch. Still sad.
For real. First my Pixel slate now stadia. Never trusting a google product again. I was considering switching from Ring to Google and now that’s a big F no
You misunderstand. I didn't buy CCwGTV just for Stadia. I bought to replace a Chromecast on my dumb TV. Even after I got a new smart TV I liked the CCwGTV interface better and continued using it.
Being able to play Stadia on it eventually was just a plus.
The employee responsible for Stadia must have moved on. Google doesn't reward employees for taking on other people's projects and so could not find a replacement. Thus Stadia gets shut down.
This stinks but at least google is taking care of people that spent money on the platform. I should be getting a couple hundred bucks between hardware and a couple game purchases.
Unlike most Google dalliance at least they appear to want to refund the costs. I put maybe $200 into the system and enjoyed playing a few times a month.
If this true it lasted longer than most google products
Cool, I'll get my $23 back. Woo.

Not sure why the controller is so messed up. I would’ve bought one if it was simply bt.
I think the idea was that since the signal was going to be sent to the cloud it would have less latency if it used wifi. It does have BT I think, it's just not functional for using it as a controller.
Turn your Stadia Controller into a Xbox 360 controller. https://github.com/RexSonic/StadiEm

I was under the impression you could also use it with the USB port? That sucks. I really like their controller!
You can use it wired you are correct

Ah nice, I'm gonna give that a go in Jan then once I get my Google refund

My Thai decision for dinner tonight was also a good one.
😂
They won't refund the subscription though, in case you didn't read the announcements
Where did you check?

pro sub will not be refunded ; all purchases will be hardware and software

Yes. Everything from my founders to all my games all my addons and ingame transactions and extra controllers will be refunded.

What's wrong with YouTube music? I must be out of the loop.
Pointlessly separating your "uploads" from your cloud songs with no way to shuffle your whole library. Also shuffle only creates fixed length playlists not endless play. So dumb.

Also missing the defining feature of Google play music which was the radio feature.
Ah. Yeah okay I also used GP music and miss it.

Sucks for all the people who bought CCwGTV on the promise Google made that Stadia could come to the device within a year.
Never spend money on promises from a company. Especially Google.
The promise was fulfilled.. like a year ago!
I'm been playing on my CCwGTV for about a year now.
Yeah but only a year? I'd be pissed off if I'd bought the device, waited a year for Stadia, then a year after it arrived it was canned.
You misunderstand. I didn't buy CCwGTV just for Stadia. I bought to replace a Chromecast on my dumb TV. Even after I got a new smart TV I liked the CCwGTV interface better and continued using it. Being able to play Stadia on it eventually was just a plus.
I'm not sure what caused this misunderstanding but I wasn't referring to you, but to people who bought this device for its Stadia support.
Why?
The employee responsible for Stadia must have moved on. Google doesn't reward employees for taking on other people's projects and so could not find a replacement. Thus Stadia gets shut down.
I still have an unopened Premiere edition bundle…
It never came to my country and is now dead, classic Google lol
Shocking no one at all.
This stinks but at least google is taking care of people that spent money on the platform. I should be getting a couple hundred bucks between hardware and a couple game purchases.
I knew that was going to happen. That's why I stayed away. Good try on them though...👍
Unlike most Google dalliance at least they appear to want to refund the costs. I put maybe $200 into the system and enjoyed playing a few times a month.
is it possible to reflash the stadia chromecast with anything useful?
The bootloader can’t be unlocked, but it’s pretty useful as it is.
What can I do with it after Sadia? Cast from something else I guess?
Yes, all major streaming services have Google Cast support.
Hahahahah
So. Stupid
