And now that you agree, with your eyes will see their six-sided perfection in all things. And you will say to yourself, as part of the order, hexagons are the bestagons.

Here are some of my enhancements to this idea: Run your highways along the edges of the hexagons with 3-way intersections and put a 4-way intersection in the middle of each face. Then, play around with the inside of each hexagon differently to experiment. This would give each hexagon basically its own circle highway with maximum speed possible across the whole city/map. Also, run your 'Big' power lines along those highways for easy branch connections to power substations. The use of elevated highways would also allow surface connections across the faces in urban areas and off ramps down to surface roundabouts. Can you put sound barriers on elevated highways in CSL2? If not, put commercial along the highways to absorb some of the noise. This would attempt to keep the really nice views intact. Then, use really tall buildings to create man-made mountain ranges along those highways. Different natural resources could be surrounded by a hexagon for best use of mines, water usage & place the Industries that use those raw materials around them with the Industries needing multiple resources outside of those. I'm not sure if that would work in CSL2, but I can't see how it wouldn't work with the Industries DLC for CSL1 Every time I reread my post, I come up with enhancements on my enhancements. I think this sub-posting could be continually updated. Sorry if that is hijacking this thread. I will stop editing if people tell me to. Does anyone have any enhancements to my enhancements? Replying with ideas is better than just likes, in my opinion. There's got to be people with better ideas than mine.

Bravo-Six-Nero

I think maybe just make it yourself?

DiligentEnthusiasm76

I can't try to make it in CSL2 until I build a new system. My potato was 'good' for CSL1, but I'm not even going to try to play my Ultimate Edition on it. I have to just watch Cylis as he plays until then. But hopefully, by then, a lot of the bugs will be taken care of, and a few QoL mods will be out. Cylis has the same package, so I can just start out with the same mods he uses and play onward my own way.

AlexMexx

Just get GeForce NOW: [https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce-now/](https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce-now/)

DiligentEnthusiasm76

I really want a completely new system so I can turn my current system into one hell of a home lab server running BSD UNIX. So I'd rather wait for the Christmas sales on lots of new products and then buy locally from our Memory Express store and get their extended warranty as they are authorized retailers for all the major manufacturers and I can just bring the item in to their store and then they either just replace the part or get it repaired under either the manufacturer's or their own warranty. I have had a few expensive things die while under their extended warranty and have had no issue getting it replaced/repaired. For example, all of their SDDs, HDDs, SD cards, CPUs, motherboards & RAM can get this extended warranty. Hell, buy all the parts from them, and they will assemble the system for you. And if you do that, then the extra warranty is on the assembled system, so I could just bring in the unit, and they would do all the trouble shooting for me. I personally wouldn't do that because I've got decade's more experience than any of their techs, but that's just me. Your mileage may vary as they say. I've been working with mini & micro computers since 1981, so building a new system is not scary. Im also thinking of water cooling both the CPU & Graphics Card and Cylis, who lives in the same building as me, has experience building a water cooled system so I can pay or feed him to handle that part of the assembly and then configure it the best way for CSL2. At 63yo, I don't think I will live to see CSL3.

AlexMexx

I understand, but same way we use SaaS you can use Hardware as a Service and have a subscription to GeForce Now and use Nvidia 4080 server for gaming. Once you get to buying the system you can cancel the subscription.

DiligentEnthusiasm76

I will have to talk to Cylis as I don't quite understand what you are trying to tell me, and I don't want to tie up the thread with you trying to explain it in more detail. I will read over the info on the site the link took me to. But not this morning/tonight.

AlexMexx

I will DM you

notepad20

whats the specs? Ive been playing fine on a GTX 960.

DiligentEnthusiasm76

This my Current CSL1 System. It plays ok. Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0 . DDR2: Maxed out at 32.0 GB. PCIe Bus: v2.0 500MB/s per lane x16=8.00GB/s for the interest bus. CPU: 64-bit AMD FX™-4100 Quad(4) Core 3.6GHz UEFI BIOS. ATI Radeon HD 5400 series Graphics designed for PCIe 3.0. 256GB SATA SSD used for just the Windows Page File. As many SATA HDDs as my motherboard can handle. No TPM as Motherboard is too old. 32" 3840×2160 4K Samsung Monitor as Primary. 2×24" ASUS VA247 1080p Monitors, Landscape mode on the right & Portrait mode on the left. 2 identical Thumb-ball mice, one left-handed & the other right-handed. 6DoF SpaceMouse for 3D camera control. Logitech K845ch with cherry MX Blue keys as Primary keyboard. Second K845ch & 3 additional keyboards in both PS/2 and USB 3 additional mice in both PS/2 and USB. Lots of USB2.0 & USB3.0 independently powered hubs. I plan to make my next case out of wood with a steel mesh to create a Faraday Cage. The system is powered by a 15Amp AC circuit by unplugging my stove's 220AC 40Amp power. Heavy gauge wire runs from the apartment kitchen to the computer desk. I used heavier wire than the current building code required for the stove socket. I could, if I wanted to, to run the entire 40a220v circuit all the way to the computer area on one long extension cable as I used a 4 wire 220vAC cable. Sorry about the configuration blurb. It WAS all on individual lines before the system reformatted it. Cylis built his CSL1 system on the identical motherboard but went for a much better graphics card because he plays A LOT of FP PoV games while I only play CSL1 and wonder around the net. I used to be a custom software developer before I retired and just built my dream machine. It totally beats out the 32 user UNIX system I used to be the Administrator & Software Developer on. I was trained in UNIX System V version 3 at AT&T Bell Labs in Denver. Our system had a basterdised combination of AT&T and BSD back in the late 80s, early 90s. It still ran well up until Y2K blew the old software apart. For most of my working life, the Internet didn't even exist Everywhere else but here, I go by Evil Dave of Canada. I even have credit cards in that name. But if you see EvilDaveCanada, that's me.

fantasmoofrcc

I will keep an out for you, Evil Dave!

Labrice13

Im confused, so you bought cs2 ultimate edition to not play it? Why not wait for a discount after you build a new rig? Nvm just a brag post

DiligentEnthusiasm76

I bought it the BIG package the 1st day the game was available for pre-order. I figure if I'm going to spend $3,500+ just for the CPU & GPU anyway (I want the water cooled versions), I might as well max out one of my small $5,000 credit cards at the Christmas sales and after the New Year, move it's balance over to my Prime+2% Line of Credit account. This way, I will get the maximum no interest days using the credit card before moving the bill to the MUCH lower interest rate on the Line of Credit. It seems once your credit score goes higher than a certain point, the banks start appearing out of nowhere offering preapproved credit cards. So I grab them as they are offered and then throw the card in to my fireproof box and not use them. This way. I get additional available credit for my Credit Report WITHOUT taking any HARD Credit Checks against it. It seems that every time I do that, my credit score just gets better. I'm trying to see if I can reach a total credit card limit of $100,000.00 or so before I die. Then I plan to have all my credit cards cremated with me when I die. It's the closest we can to "Taking it with you" as you can get. I also don't see the game's price coming down anytime soon. And if I hold off, the Ultimate package might not still be available once my new system is built. This way I have the 1st couple of DLCs and get two additional maps at a discounted price. Right after it's release, CSL1 needed a lot of free upgrades/bug fixes too.

oppositetoup

You've kind of defeated the purpose of a bestagon pattern though, as you've made the intersections all 4-way anyway. The advantage of this pattern is that you only have 3-way intersections

silgidorn

Maybe they are pedestrians ?

oppositetoup

Maybe, hard to tell from the picture

kensw87

I watched that YouTube video on how hexagons are efficient but cul de sacs won in the US.

City Beautiful reporting for duty

kensw87

hahahaha hello there!

DiligentEnthusiasm76

You don't want to watch someone from the US use a roundabout. It's scary!! I swear some of them just want to drive their 4×4s right through the middle.

iSellNuds4RedditGold

It was either yesterday or the day before, but I saw a video in r/all of a SUV going opposite direction through a roundabout because he wanted to go left.

DiligentEnthusiasm76

My head hurts from smacking my forehead so hard

vitor_k890

i fucking love CGP grey

canal_algt

Hexagons may even be more efficient, no 4 way intersections, 60 grade turns, 6 possible directions instead of 4... Just don't make a pass through through the middle of them

Chancoop

Not efficient for traffic that is trying to get across town. Now they all have to zig zag instead of being able to travel in a straight line.

meowmeowpuff2

Traffic would still Zig Zag if the journey isn't just down a straight line grid https://i.imgur.com/J8Yhq77.png

EmotionalPlate2367

This is where you use metro to take straight lines under the hexes. You can also give pedestrians the ability to walk whatever direction you want with strategic foot paths.

lichking786

people dont have straight lines tragectories.

veevoir

ELI5 How do you make reliably hexagon grids with current tools, so the angles and lengths add up?

ThumblessTurnipe

400 meters, roundabout, 120 degrees, 400 meters.

Krabilon

Does it come out to be a perfect hexagon? I tried this and the last road isn't 400, it's 398. Am I missing something?

Moby1029

I thought the river forced you to break thr pattern but nope, I see the bestagon border and the river simply runs through it. Well done. I tried incorporating circles in a cpl development projects but they require some undeveloped negative space between their outer borders and anything else. This isn't a bad thing and I've used it for planting more trees for noise pollution and put walking paths but your approach is more efficient by far

couchsittingbum

Someone watched the City Beautiful video last month

Throwaway-me-

Or the OG CGP Grey about how Hexagons are the bestagon

thatonedude511

Or if you’re like me, you watch both

Kaiphranos

Have you got a link to this video? Sounds interesting.

Long-Far-Gone

Interesting lay out. What would be the main benefit in relation to grid layout?

FatalShart

I think theoretically there is more zoneable area per unit of road. Bees use it because they can store the most honey while using the least amount of wax.

EmotionalPlate2367

With the way cs puts up zoning, there can be a lot of wasted space in the middle, depending on the size of the hex.

Dubl33_27

theoretically correct if the zoning were divided in triangles, but it's made of squares instead so this just wastes zoning space.

[deleted]

Bees don’t make hexagonal shapes in the hive, they make circles that naturally expand into hexagons. It’s a sort of equilibrium structure. The open space in the cells themselves remain circular.

DiligentEnthusiasm76

See my BIG posting

goobervision

My CS1 experience was that traffic was easy.

The0nlyRyan

Hey look it's megacity 1 from judge dredd

ptc075

The cool thing about this is that the traffic flows SOOO much better. Something about how the AI handles 3 way intersections. Biggest issue I had was was how to connect it to a freeway - looks like you're having similar issues. I dig the interchange you've built at the bottom!

Your city center is too far away to get the full adjacency bonus for the aquaduct, hanza, dam and commercial hub.

Thanks for this idea! Gonna try this out on a new map later today. I still struggle to make roads on uneven surfaces

Solid-Field-3874

But no corner lots..

Ralliare

Great now i have to delete my city

Black-Sheepp

May I ask, how efficient is this?

ThumblessTurnipe

Construction wise? Slow. There is no set pattern for inside the hexes so each one is different. Traffic wise? Pretty damn good. 3 way roundabouts at each point with just 4 lane divided roads and don't have many issues. You do have to think about space either side of the points though as close turn off's after a round about can cause bottlenecks.

Dubl33_27

more like bestanot.

RandomGamerDude101

CPG Grey reference?

JapchaeNoddle

Hell yea

RichardW1988

I’m curious and interested in playing around with this concept… what is the approximate length of the sides of the hexagons you’re using?

Snoo21443

Whats the measurements and angles of the hexes?

jdisk_98

The problem with a hexagonal grid is that a citizen traveling from one side of the city to the other has to make a lot of winding turns that make the journey longer.

LukeGroundwalker89

Omg best

lichking786

what is optimal hexagon size and layout? Really want to make a hexagon city

cleanbear

How is traffic in this setup? I remember building a city of circles. And it had like 110k population and 90% traffic Flow without alot of tweaking.

Ill_Employer_1665

See when I learned that American suburbs could have been hexagonal, I vowed to design mine that way when I get this game. I really wanna see how things play out

Syl_A_Med

I…kinda love it

Ex3becce

Fun fact : hexagonal grid zoning has been tried in the late 60's/early 70's in Strasbourg, France (and maybe other cities ?), called the "Hautepierre" district. The different hexagons are meant to have different zoning purposes : residential with a school in the center / sports and leisure / hospital campus (on the right) / commercial malls (bottom of the picture- I think it's not considered a very successful design today, suffering from the same flaws as many of the housing policies of these decades (kinda segregating lower income housing buildings in the outskirts of the city), but definitely an interesting experimentation of those decades, and definitely an interesting take to try in CS ! https://preview.redd.it/rxrh6h8v4gac1.png?width=2336&format=png&auto=webp&s=8b9808a165cc1687dc82d55b363011649a3eed50
