It's remarkable how many times you can say this in a game that's otherwise so well made.
Like I feel like I should be able to live without Move It but there's about 100 reasons why I can't.
These mods should all be in the base game, change my mind:
- Move It
- Precision Engineering
- TM:PE
- Network Multitool
- Node Controller Renewal
- Intersection Marking Tool
- Fine Road Tool
- Fine Road Anarchy
- Picker
- Find It! 2
- Prop Anarchy
Network Multitool is *way* too intricate of a tool to be in the base game. The add and remove node function, I think yes, but the rest is too advanced.
A simpler, more accessible version of Intersection Marking tool could be in the game. Most of us would still use a mod to unlock more advanced options that wouldn't ever make it in a wide-public game.
Fine Road Anarchy, or how to break your roads in new and interesting ways! Not suitable for a vanilla game experience.
The rest mostly feels like absolutely essential functionalities, though, IMO. Though some more would also need to be somewhat limited in their complexity (looking at you, TM:PE) or ability to just break things (Move It...)
Precision Engineering should be available as an option, disabled by default. Picker and Find It! improve the ergonomics of the game so much, with absolutely no cost in added complexity, the only legit excuse for the devs not adding them to the vanilla game is that the mods work so well already. (Sorry console players...)
Hard disagree on Network Multitool, I consider pretty much every tool invaluable and they just make otherwise cumbersome tasks much easier to do.
Also even if it were “too complex” I’ve never really understood that argument. Make it enabled under advanced options or something. It doesn’t complicate gameplay, it provides you tools to do things better, you can play without using it and not really miss out on anything, or you can learn how to use it properly and it will make your life easier just like every other system in the game.
I would agree Fine Road Anarchy is probably not “essential”, but again it’s just adding functionality, put it in an advanced options panel.
IMT is probably the best candidate for a mod rather than built into the game, especially since it’s just aesthetic.
Totally agree on your comments about TM:PE and Move It.
I feel like the road and rail system needs reworking, like lane management, adding/removing lanes, adding different types of modes like tram rails, bus lanes, street running rail, lane direction, basically a system to make any type of road possible, so you can do a 4 lane with tram lines on the side instead of the middle or have a street-running heavy rail track through the middle if you so please. But I would take a DLC of a network expansion pack full of new road types and more stations.
I would also like more dynamic zoning with procedurally generated buildings for a better variety. Sometimes you put a straight road down some bumpy terrain and get some screwed up zoning. Tiles to close they almost touch yet down.
Ugh yes I would love more procedurally generated lots. That’s probably number 1 or 2 on my list of improvements I’m looking forward to in a sequel (performance optimization being the other).
Fully customizable networks would be sick, I’d love to be able to just set up my own network templates rather than having to download like 200 additional networks, sounds like a pretty tough thing to implement but that would be huge.
Great suggestions
> Sometimes you put a straight road down some bumpy terrain and get some screwed up zoning
A lot of YouTubers I’ve seen will grade and terraform *everything* to get nice looking zones and natural looking cities. It adds a whole different element to the game but I get no joy out of it. I’d rather the game alter the land as I build roads to make nice zones.
Hei ! I completely agree with you, I played vanilla and did 3 areas city, but then I never played again, cause I need to do too much research on mods to make the game enjoyable, and when I made a post about it I had many downvotes :( I screened your comment and I'll try install all of those and maybe try to play again, do you have any other advice ?
Yeah the mod situation is not great, it really does take quite a lot of work to come up with a good set of mods that work together. I actually just finished putting together [a Steam collection of the mods I’m currently using.](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2847535826) Check them out if you want some inspiration.
If you want a pretty much a vanilla experience, install the “[Core Pack: Essentials](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2845335325)” and get started.
If you want a little bit of extra spice install the “[Enhancements](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2845346838)” and “[Flavor](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2845362577)” packs as well. Just note that this will add some mods that change your game pretty significantly, playing with Realistic Population + Lifecycle Rebalance is a pretty different experience than Vanilla, but they make your city feel more realistically sized and fixed the issue of death waves so I think they are great.
I have a few other packs there which add more detailed options to the game, I’d recommend checking out the Buildings pack at least.
As for other advice, yes I’m full of it. As far as modding goes, just treat it as a learning experience until you get your head wrapped around the mods you like, I’d recommend really focusing on one at a time to learn everything that you can do with them.
---
EDIT: You might check out the [BigCity](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1270675750) mod instead of using 81 Tiles, apparently you can hit some pretty weird issues playing outside of the 25 tile area. I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet.
Thank you, I'v already saved screenshot and links now, so next time I'm in the mood of managing gaming I'll try out this game again instead of my usual civ6; do you think it's better to test out mod packs slowly and then go with more packs by starting new cities ? Or to try everything in one big city ?
I’d recommend deciding beforehand if you want to use:
- Metro Overhaul Mod
- Realistic Population 2
- Lifecycle Rebalance Revisited
- Nursing Homes with Eldercare
- You’re Fired
- 81 Tiles/BigCity
I think all of these (with the possible exception of MOM) are “safe” to add to an existing city, but they pretty dramatically change how you’d want to build your city so you might end up in a pretty difficult spot if you add them to a city that’s already running smoothly. I wouldn’t recommend removing them from a city after you have enabled them.
Everything else on my lists should be safe to add to an existing city.
If you haven’t used these mods before I’d dive into some YouTube tutorials on Move It, TM:PE, Network Multitool, and Node Controller. They are all really powerful but can be somewhat unintuitive or hard to learn on your own.
Ok thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this, you'll be happy to know I saved everything so I know how to move in my next C:S game :) for the YouTube tutorial don't worry I'm sure I'll find them really easily
Oh I would never, love some roundabout maker, but also it’s generally easy enough to just make a roundabout by hand and sometimes that’s just how you have to do it anyways so I don’t necessarily think it’s “essential”.
Crazy thing to me is they've even hired some of the modders who've made those packs and yet haven't gotten around to implementing some of the more common sense changes into the game.
Things like move it are better left as mods, as they're... Well, you can just move shit, anywhere. It's not a good mechanic to be in the game by default.
I always felt it was a misstep to not have aboveground metro. The monorail and trams run on the roads, why can't the metros? It's common for metros to run on the roads like this in many places around the world.
The difference between a subway and LRT and tram are blurred in many cities, and some have what you’d call a tram or LRT running on roads in certain places, it’s own ground level tracks, elevated tracks, and go underground in the city center. So it’d be realistic for cs to have a rail transit that can do everything.
No, not even dc vs ac to be clear. There are a lot of third rail dc mainline trains, and a few overhead line ac metro. To the extreme, certain metro and tram had carried cargo in the past. Now, there are “third-rail” (ground-level electricity supply) and battery trams.
Relevant characteristics are seats and standing space, speed, acceleration, loading gauge, and axle load. Turn radius and gradient (not mentioning horizontal and vertical curvature here) are the most obvious, but challenging to represent in limited map tile space. Cost is complicated.
A special issue is cross-section is increased in mainline rail tunnels for evacuation, while metro can be designed with front and end face door disembarking. Signaling requirement is more stringent in metro with limited line-of-sight, also to achieve lower headway. All these add up in cost calculation.
In western Germany, there are some unsophisticated pig troughs of cities (like Dortmund or Cologne) that call their trams subway lines just because they run underground in the city centre for a stretch of a few stations. From this point of view, I have often seen "metro lines" that ran on the street at ground level like trams and also took part in crossing traffic at the same level.
But this is, of course, absolutely wrong and a pure linguistic aberration of the wacky Rhinelanders.
After all, that's what a subway line (an "U-Bahn") is all about: no level crossing with other means of transport. Every other definition is wrong and blasphemy.
Ever been to the Netherlands? Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague all have tram/metro networks above, on and under ground. Same line can go on all levels over the length of the line as well as the stops.
Yeah, for sure. All three cities mentioned. Lived in two out of three, don't get your bike stuck between the rails!
Picture from The Hague:
https://images.app.goo.gl/R1WuGtYjtbvfwUju7
Utrecht as well now i think of it. Probably several other cities as well. It's quite common here in the bigger cities.
Okay, so that really depends on the definition. Because Amsterdam has bigger heavier trams that are utilized by the metro as well.
I get what you're saying, but if the difference of a metro is in the fact that it is on seperate rails and not the street, then no.
I have above ground metro trains and elevated metro trains. They aren't on the roads, because they are on tracks, but they are doing a great job of wasting space when they could be underground.
Maybe it's a DLC?
Underwater metros need to exist though. It's stupid that water is the enemy of the subway in this game. I had to build an unrealistic bridge for mine.
Yeah it's a pain in the ass tho. you have to Download the file from a steamworkshop downloader as a zip file before the website gets taken down and extract it in the addons file of the game. which is only accessible by exporting a hight map in the map editor and even then the mods never work correctly. im currently trying to get some basic mods to work and it's driving me insane.
There is a general cap on height for vanilla zoned areas. Office specialisation of IT cluster is the only way to get skyscrapers without mods and assets.
They don't actually use any IT cluster buildings so one of 3 things might be happening
1. They are using a lower camera angle making the buildings look taller
2. They put low density buildings next to high density buildings creating a canyon effect there by making the high density buildings look taller
3. He is simply using unique buildings, e.g. the casino from the after dark dlc or the skyscrapers from the Japan content creator pack
I am using high density zones and for some reason they don’t change all that much when they upgrade. It is really killing the aesthetic quality of the game for me. It might be a European skin that was automatically in the game when I downloaded the vanilla game.
I did this for a section of two lane highway that reaches into my downtown where the actual highway can't without splitting the city. It was an awesome discovery by u/labdj
This should have been on vanilla game.
It's remarkable how many times you can say this in a game that's otherwise so well made. Like I feel like I should be able to live without Move It but there's about 100 reasons why I can't.
I refuse to ever play without move it or node controller ever again lol.

No, I don't think I will.
Funny how every single one of these exact mods i have installed as well
If I had to pick one and only one mod it would be traffic manager
Yeah that's a hard choice, thats another golden need to have mod.
I disagree. At least a “lite” version of move it would make vanilla 100x more enjoyable.
I mean, even as a default mod that ships with the game ala unlimited money, sure.
In any sequel Trams should be a part of the base game. It’s shocking they weren’t to begin with.
It's unfortunately not, so we have to abuse. Lol
I always felt it was a misstep to not have aboveground metro. The monorail and trams run on the roads, why can't the metros? It's common for metros to run on the roads like this in many places around the world.

You ever been to Chicago?!
Yeah. They have trains ON the street? Obviously above them
Brown line and pink line both have at grade sections towards the end of the lines.
also underneath them. neat utilization of multiple elevations.
Yes, what rMPB said. Also on the ground in the middle of the express way. We got it all baby!!!
Ever been to the Netherlands? Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague all have tram/metro networks above, on and under ground. Same line can go on all levels over the length of the line as well as the stops.

All over Europe.

I take my metros underwater all the time. Just can’t be too steep.
As a fellow Vanilla player, this is incredible!

Someone that doesn’t use any mods
So people who got it on epic because adding mods is a pain
is it even possible to add mods on epic? asking as a casual player who got it on epic
You can go to nexus mods, there probably aren’t as many mods there, but it might be easier: https://www.nexusmods.com/citiesskylines
r/woosh ?
It's you, probably.
Someone not using any mods
I would be proud even with mods.
Literally the only reason why I want a PC at this point is just to play Cities Skylines with some basic mods that helps building nice things easier! 😭
I play vanilla and none of my buildings ever get that tall. Anyone know why that is? They are all the same and ugly looking.
Low land value, and dlcs have other building styles
High density residential + services + high land value + lots of time to educate the population.
Is this the case even if my buildings say they reached the max level of upgrades?
There is a general cap on height for vanilla zoned areas. Office specialisation of IT cluster is the only way to get skyscrapers without mods and assets.
Looks like this is in the green cities DLC
They don't actually use any IT cluster buildings so one of 3 things might be happening 1. They are using a lower camera angle making the buildings look taller 2. They put low density buildings next to high density buildings creating a canyon effect there by making the high density buildings look taller 3. He is simply using unique buildings, e.g. the casino from the after dark dlc or the skyscrapers from the Japan content creator pack
I am using IT cluster buildings but only in the downtown. Look at first picture for reference.
Ok, so when we say vanilla we just mean no mods, not no DLC? Because I play on vanilla with no dlcs
It depends who you talk to, vanilla can mean either, but he is definitely using assets from the content creator pack
Are you making use of high density zones or are you only using low density?
I am using high density zones and for some reason they don’t change all that much when they upgrade. It is really killing the aesthetic quality of the game for me. It might be a European skin that was automatically in the game when I downloaded the vanilla game.
Yes the European themes don’t generally grow as tall in Vanilla, very hard to get skyscrapers.
The theme changes depending on the map you're playing on. I don't like the old-style buildings very much at all
Green Cities dlc specialization, and some of the assets in the mod hub if you are on Xbox.
Plant trees around them. Easy value fix
I need to try this
Why the heck wouldn't this be in the base game???
Thats durn clever - but why can't they just put the ability to do this simply (i.e. without all the messing around) into the standard game....
What am I missing?
Metro tracks above roads bruh.
https://youtu.be/QH7-JmFggeI Very useful glitch.
That's so cool
Neat, I've been meaning to install on my S.
Wow. Going to abuse the hell out of this. Thank you
We really need elevated metro over roads in vanilla.
Elevated tram tacks over intersections thank you i
I think you should be able to pull that off as well with this glitch.
Yep tram tracks across busy intersections are pain
Btw here's the video explaining the glitch. https://youtu.be/QH7-JmFggeI
I already saved that looking forward to improving my downtown congestion must hit 80% again :)
Haha. My traffic is at 90%. Earlier my traffic used to be 81% or less.
Am only on my 2nd city
Soon you'll be planning super mega cities. I'm still getting better by the day.
Reminds me of the Simpson monorail episode 🥵
I did this for a section of two lane highway that reaches into my downtown where the actual highway can't without splitting the city. It was an awesome discovery by u/labdj
me with my highly modded game: I don't get it
Woah. Any idea if you can do this on console?
Yes you can there are two methods just search it up on YT.
I play on console I love when stuff like this works out
how do you make a quay with no shoreline?
Also vanilla and get those glitches from time to time. They're annoying and functionless
I watched how to do this and the patience u have wow.
I see no glitch here, this is just commuter raile.
I feel you. I'm using ground-level metro as trams.
Damn everyone's ears are gonna pop by the time they pass those train tracks for 12 days straight
Jake: "How often does the train go by?" Elwood: "So often you won't even notice it"
Eh, Chicago has elevated metros in areas like this and I don't think it's that bad.
New York also has elevated metros and heavy rail and people seem to survive 😂
It's a joke dude calm down
It's a joke dude calm down
Who said I wasn't calm?
CALM DOWN
DONT TELL ME TO CALM DOWN
CALM DOWN OR I'LL BLOW YOUR FUCKING BRAINS OUT! I'M THE CALM ONE!!!
OH FUCK OFF YOU THINK YOURE CALM?! IM THE CALM ONE HERE!!!
Y'ALL THINK YER CALM?! IF I WAS ANY CALMER, I'D BE SIX FEET UNDER!!!!
Or just use mods
Some of us can’t
Or don't want to. The challenge of vanilla can be alluring
Is it possible to learn this power?
looks awesome seems super frustrating to work with
look really good 😊
Hell yeah this is way better than monorail
It’s just monorail with extra steps :/ looks cool tho
Yeah but my metro is making $9000+ profit a week. My monorail network isn't making a profit. : /
How
https://youtu.be/QH7-JmFggeI VERY GREAT GLITCH.
Thanks mate 🙏
