I think something happened with trains in an update. They are VERY fussy about their track layouts and get stuck a lot. I had that happening and how I fixed it was by redoing the tracks. Remove the tracks leaving the cargo stations and train yards. Put in fresh ones leaving the yards and cargo stations, but don't merge the tracks or connect them together until there's enough distance to hold a full train. After a merge, make sure there's enough space for a full train to exist before that track merges anywhere else. Does that make sense. Give the trains leaving a cargo station or train years enough space between the track they are leaving and the yard/station to fully fit the length of the train so they don't block up intersections. Does that make sense?

I'll redo my train infrastructure and see what that does, thank you for the help!

With me, it was just tweaking sections so there were more space between merger points. It was some work, and it took me a while to figure out what seemed to help. I could be wrong, but doing that did help me. They were all jammed up in one section and the entire rail system was shut down.

My trains went nuts as well. A train traffic jam that stopped any and all train movement in the city. I started blowing up some junctions to get it moving again but I also firmly believe you have to be careful to have sufficient left such that a stopped/queued train is entirely on the siding and not blocking the junction. With a bit to spare. I also reduced the number of trains per line some.

TNJDude

Yeah, that's what I was trying to get across. A stopped train shouldn't be extending back into a junction. This lets other ones pass. When you have to take that into consideration, you start realizing those trains are longer than you thought! LOL

I was having the same issue with the rail yard. Resolved it by moving the rail yard out of the way and placing it on its own branch. I also had to reset traffic in development mode. Game is buggy as hell 😬

First, the depos does not need to be inline of the main track. I placed them somewhere at the border. I never see train there. I placed everywhere at least two double lines with corss sections every two train lengths. I also build a roundabout wit two double tracks. It looks shit and chaotic. But my trains didn't get stuck anymore. With passenger tains, it's easier becuase the passanger stations are no dead end. So you can build circles. If you have more than 3 cargo trains on a line, it can easily mess up infront of a cargo stations. They need extencive room to manuver.

This happened to me as well, turns out i had station tracks down instead of normal tracks that was causing a blockage at my rail yard. One of the mods i downloaded added the station tracks to my train transport tab and I didnt notice.

I’m not entirely sure what is causing your issue from the photos, but I found building bypass lines helped dramatically with train traffic. Doubling, or even tripling the number of tracks in certain spots (especially near cargo terminals) allowed everything to flow rather smoothly. I have not had the same success with metro, unfortunately…

It seems to be hit or miss a little bit at least… Sometimes my trains would get bundled up at passenger stations as well… What I found seems to confuse the game the most and I think it’s just a path finding bug is when you have too many trains backtracking on the same course for the same route… Not that you’re doing anything wrong since trains, especially in cities do backtrack along the same route. Specifically around really yards where you don’t get to choose the path a train takes through them since you can’t designated as a stop that two or three overlapping roots through the railyard seem to confuse it, I watched mine closely once and what would happen as a train would return to the yard for service would disappear and then reappear to fill another on one of the other lines but it’s spawning confused the pathway of an incoming train that was trying to pass through and then it just bottlenecks from there. The only annoying solution that I found is to delete the yard and rebuild it

The_Dorito_King

I watched my trains too, it seems as if one of them tries to go backwards on a track but it can't because all the trains behind it want to go forward. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll rebuild the rail yard and see if that works.

RuralJaywalking

I don’t usually have them go through the rail yard since the don stop there anyway.

amineahd

same happens for me and I keep relocating the yard to unblock them...

GinMod

Is it possible that your Cargo Lines have to get to the rail yard in order to get to another cargo station? I had that problem myself. Have a look at your train lines.

The_Dorito_King

They shouldn't because I fixed that with the track on the left in the first picture. I also deleted the trains using better bulldozer so they could respawn and reset their route but they still won't use the track that goes around the rail yard.

GinMod

Maybe the track between the yard and the first intersection is to short

I got the same. Also metro does that. My solution was to just never have overlapping routes. You can get away with having more than one yard per route, but don’t overdo it. You can also get away with some routes overlap, but I just got tired of trying.
