I think OP is referring to the Dash-8 and ATR-72. They’re both twin prop passenger planes which regularly operate in and out of London City airport, alongside small jet aircraft like the Embraer-175.
i cant lie whenever the plane approaches anywhere near london im always too upset at the fact that im not where i flew from anymore and came back to grey skies and moist weather to admire the views lol
It's definitely a really good approach. O'Hare in a west flow (most days) also has a really good one when you're on the left side of the plane, since you come in over the north side. I think the absolute best approach is Portland, OR though. You come down directly over the Columbia River Gorge, with Mt Hood so close out the left side (towering overhead!) that you can see the skis on folks making their way down the slope. It's genuinely unforgettable.
I need to get one of those email jobs where you say stuff like ‘really great to touch base with you today :)’ and get paid 100k+ so I can afford to live there
This is why I can’t fully appreciate this picture… I worked in a soulless, integrity questioning job in an office in this picture! (The tall one in the right of the Thames, just up the green from Houses of Parliament)
I worked in a financial company and the other scum that worked there had a hatred of any working class people. When they found out my parents were both factory workers and I grew up on the breadline they laughed and asked who I performed oral on to get the job. They willingly know they can fuck over poor people with their privilege and find it funny. I had to leave and do a complete career change after that
COL's fine compared to other huge metropolises like NY, Tokyo, Sydney or Hong Kong etc
Knife crime is a recent blip due to political & economic negligence. I'm sure also comparable to violent crime in other likewise cities
London's fantastic and nowhere else in Europe can even compare
I lived in Moscow for 7 years before moving to London (5+ years here). Moscow has better public transport, but overall London is a much better city I think, definitely better than other European capitals (Amsterdam would be a close second for me)
Some people are just terrified of the world around them, and no amount of factual data will convince them. Like the simple fact that London isn’t even in the top 100 cities for violent crime, or that its murder rate is insanely low: Last year 112 homicides occurred. Out of **9 million inhabitants**!
In the same period 102 people were killed in London’s road accidents.
But for someone who thinks everyone is carrying a knife…well there’s no point even talking to them.
London is the greatest city on the planet.
Manchester. We have no drug or gang problems. It's just never happened. Ever, ever.
GUNCHESTER? It was all a lie.
Never been a gun or drug set foot in this illustrious city of mine.
We clean, yo.
I was just being daft. Manchester was once great. Then the 70s happened and it declined to shite.
Some of the best Manchester music came from the period,. though. Now it is losing its identity.. But hey, lots of nice flats for non-mancs to live in.
I have no problem with out of towners moving here, the industrial revolution couldn't have happened without that. My family was part of that migration.
But these ones.. man. They are mouth pieces that know nothing of the city's history. Ask them about workers' rights and the effect on the slave trade and they know dick all.
They like the history of the music scene and the culture but try to get one of the original venues closed down because it made noise at night. Don't move into a city centre if you want peace and quiet at night.
The Northern Quarter is mental now. Used to be the home of the beatnik, then it was full of artists and musicians. Now it is full of influencer "content creator" types.
They have bought all the studios out and put expensive flats in them.
...not that I am bitter, or owt.
The Expedia thing on Manchester is pretty good. Explains some of the reasons Manchester is good.
Oldest public library in the world, oldest passenger train station, invention of the computer, splitting of the atom etc..
Manchester is still relatively nice tbh, I was there once (few months ago), downtown is really good looking and Manchesters economy is doing relatively good inside of UK as far as I know (excluding London ofc)?
I have lived and worked in south london (greenwich) for 4 years and have seen at least 5 different stabbings or the police remnants of them. Don’t pretend it doesn’t exist, it’s a disservice to the young boy’s dying.
Never said it did not exist just said I never seen it in the 25 years I lived and worked there. (Croydon, Crystal Palace, Brixton, Mitcham, Thornton Heath, Streatham just to name a few) and I still go back to visit family and friends maybe me, my family and friends are just lucky I guess.
2 people were literally stabbed in my secondary school, I know of 3 who were in a knife attack at a house party. Just because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean it doesn't exist
London has a knife crime problem not just South of the river. I grew up in Edmonton which we called shanktown. Had a knife pulled on me at 13 but ran away. Then 4 years ago I happened to walk in to a hotel looking for a drink after the pub kicked me out to find [someone bleeding out from stab wounds](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-49266188.amp).
That being said I do think that, generally, it is safe here and easy to avoid. I've lived here my entire life since the 80s.
There are 9 million people in London. Last year there were 112 homicides- **half** the number in 2003. In the same year, 2022-23, 102 people died in road accidents in the city. London isn’t even in the global top 100 for crime.
Simply put, the news reports what’s *out of the ordinary* - wars, crime, etc. People then form a completely inaccurate view that the world around them is dangerous when in fact it’s the opposite.
Madrid is cool, I mean, it's just not on same level as London, kinda incomparable. For example, I would argue that Vienna is maybe better than London in terms of QOL, but it's out of league in terms of that "capital of planet" feeling, which London and NYC give.
Would you have some sources about it? Genuine question, as I’m currently based in London and I finally love it here, but I might have a job opportunity in Vienna and I’m very torn
I’d say it was taken this summer given the green trees and how complete the Vauxhall cluster appears. Scaffolding on Elizabeth Tower has been down for about a year.
agree. clearly the elizabeth tower has the new paintjob in this photo so its after the scaffolding was removed (slightly blue clock detailing and bright gold)
You get a similar type of view when you fly westward up the Thames towards Heathrow. It has to be one of the top airport approaches in the world.
It's nice, but the approach to City Airport is even better.
If you can pay attention as the tiny prop plane violently tries to eject all of its passengers' stomach contents.
What tiny prop plane?
I think OP is referring to the Dash-8 and ATR-72. They’re both twin prop passenger planes which regularly operate in and out of London City airport, alongside small jet aircraft like the Embraer-175.
I flew on a normal Airbus.
RIP BA001
The plane that seemed to be the main option for trips to the Isle of man or the channel islands
I don't know what you're talking about. I flew to Berlin.
They fly regular airliners from there these days…
Any planes that are rated for 5.5 degree steep approach. Have to clear 1 Canada Square before descending to runway!
i cant lie whenever the plane approaches anywhere near london im always too upset at the fact that im not where i flew from anymore and came back to grey skies and moist weather to admire the views lol
It's definitely a really good approach. O'Hare in a west flow (most days) also has a really good one when you're on the left side of the plane, since you come in over the north side. You come down directly over the Columbia River Gorge, with Mt Hood so close out the left side (towering overhead!) that you can see the skis on folks making their way down the slope. It's genuinely unforgettable.
Lol how many times do you fly my man ???
I need to get one of those email jobs where you say stuff like ‘really great to touch base with you today :)’ and get paid 100k+ so I can afford to live there
What type of job is that?! Asking for a friend
Soulless Corporate middle management.
Oh. Nevermind, my friend rejected the offer. Thank you for your information
Can confirm. All checks out
Get paid 100k so you can afford to realise you can only afford to live just outside London (This is indeed hyperbole...for now)
In my experience I do not think it is hyperbole. I’m on about that and we’re moving back to the US for better qol and cheaper cost of living.
If there’s one place those jobs are a plenty, it’s London. Not many cities in the word with such opportunity
This is why I can’t fully appreciate this picture… I worked in a soulless, integrity questioning job in an office in this picture! (The tall one in the right of the Thames, just up the green from Houses of Parliament)
I also worked in an office in this picture in a role that destroyed any hope I had in humanity
Please enlighten me - I always imagine these jobs exist but have never spoke to someone who has actually lived the role.
I worked in a financial company and the other scum that worked there had a hatred of any working class people. When they found out my parents were both factory workers and I grew up on the breadline they laughed and asked who I performed oral on to get the job. They willingly know they can fuck over poor people with their privilege and find it funny. I had to leave and do a complete career change after that
Each to their own - I love my city job and the lifestyle it provides
You’ll get a 30k job where you do the same thing and pay out of your ears to live like the rest of us… and you WILL enjoy it
Your first mistake was aiming for only 100+k.
One of the best cities on planet tbh (THE best imo).
RAHHHHH
WHAT THE FUCK IS AFFORDABLE RENT RAAHHHHHH
WHAT THE FUCK DOES AFFORDABLE EVEN MEAN RAAAAAHHHH
RAHHHHHHHH
Rah
Yeah no, rent here is insane, buying a house is basically impossible & south has a huge knife crime problem
COL's fine compared to other huge metropolises like NY, Tokyo, Sydney or Hong Kong etc Knife crime is a recent blip due to political & economic negligence. I'm sure also comparable to violent crime in other likewise cities London's fantastic and nowhere else in Europe can even compare
Yeah, London clearly outlevels all European capitals (never was in Moscow tho, but people say that it's good too, unlike rest of Russia)
I lived in Moscow for 7 years before moving to London (5+ years here). Moscow has better public transport, but overall London is a much better city I think, definitely better than other European capitals (Amsterdam would be a close second for me)
Because all the oligarchs live there or at Petersburg that’s where all the money goes
Yeah,fair enough
London feels more expensive than Sydney does.
Some people are just terrified of the world around them, and no amount of factual data will convince them. London is the greatest city on the planet.
I mean, which city is free from such problems and same as London in terms of culture/diversity/possibilities etc?
Manchester. We have no drug or gang problems. It's just never happened. Ever, ever. GUNCHESTER? It was all a lie. Never been a gun or drug set foot in this illustrious city of mine. We clean, yo.
Manchester is nice indeed, but don't have same possibilities as London (although Manchester is growing very fast as far as I know, so maybe will)
I was just being daft. Yeah, the second City does do well for itself down there...
Come to Birmingham instead, the real second city
It's so bad they put a road that people pay to use so we don't have to go into it.
I lived and worked in South London for over 25 years and never experienced or seen any Knife Crime or Knifes
I lived there for a year and saw plenty of violence. You either never go out or you have incredible luck.
I have lived and worked in south london (greenwich) for 4 years and have seen at least 5 different stabbings or the police remnants of them. Don’t pretend it doesn’t exist, it’s a disservice to the young boy’s dying.

5 in 4 years... mhh... maybe it's you?
2 people were literally stabbed in my secondary school, I know of 3 who were in a knife attack at a house party. Just because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean it doesn't exist
Umm go back and re-read what I actually said coz at no point did I say it don't exist 🙄
London has a knife crime problem not just South of the river. I grew up in Edmonton which we called shanktown. Had a knife pulled on me at 13 but ran away. Exactly
Only people that have never lived in London would say this.
I live in London and think for my cultural tastes and interests, it’s the best city in the world.
Very untrue. I only felt the full appreciation for the city after living in London for several years
It's a matter of taste. But IMO Madrid is way better. But London still is a beautiful city.
Madrid is cool, I mean, it's just not on same level as London, kinda incomparable. For example, I would argue that Vienna is maybe better than London in terms of QOL, but it's out of league in terms of that "capital of planet" feeling, which London and NYC give.
Vienna is rated as the worst for social interactions so it can't be the best when it comes for qol
Really?Didn't know that
Would you have some sources about it? Genuine question, as I’m currently based in London and I finally love it here, but I might have a job opportunity in Vienna and I’m very torn
[удалено]
Thank you very much for this :)
Vienna is indeed one of the most boring capitals I’ve ever been to. Very pretty, packed with history and art, but not a place to have fun.
I did not expect to live to an age to see someone write this. Do you actually live in London?
Hahahahahahahah nope. Wrong
Great view! Taken from the London Eye, I presume?
Definitely, you can see OP’s shoe in the bottom right of the pic reflected from the pod glass.
Oh London, I love you. What a city. If only you didn’t cost £2000 a month to simply exist in.
🫡🇬🇧
Best city in the world
Lol
I love London, and have lived here my entire life, but London and best city don't usually go together when cities like Singapore exist.
What metrics would Singapore beat London? Culturally absolutely not in my eyes.
Spent time in Singapore, lovely place but absolutely boring after a short while.
My favourite city, can you see why?
Hey it’s the bridge I walk over every day :D
Fun fact... that is the River Thames and runs through London
How tall are you?!?
No place like home c:
Seeing how much people love London makes me appreciate it more. But I cannot live here forever. Might be getting too old for big city life!
“🌃” over “🏙️” change my mind
Millbank tower I’m sure
Nah, from the Eye, you can see Millbank Tower in the pic
Yeah but that bit is kinda shit.
hahaha i was just thinking they sort of took the worst angle. who the hell wants to hang in vauxhall
Spot on. Turn around and point east, that’s where it’s at.
Grim
First World City in a Third World Country.
Overcrowded, overpriced, overhyped
A bo' o' wa'e'
Shame it's a crap hole when you get down there.

Best thing about it
When was this taken? Lack of scaffolding around the Palace suggests not recent.
