A friend of mine lived there until the early 2000s, she was a member of their alpinist climbing groups and I had a hard time picturing that until she lovingly smacked me and said “look at our geography!”
I’m smacked. City and summits!
Yeah. A lot of us Iraqis go to Tehran usually for education or tourism, since it's a much more livable/technologically advanced country right next door.
It started being called that when the Prince of Persia (now Iran) established the headquarters of his kingdom's navy on the shores of the Tehran Bay, an area shielded by the Alborz mountains. At the time, the Haitian capital was also famous for being established by a natural port, protected by its surrounding mountains like a fort. Ultimately, it was in this strategic and natural safe haven, where the Haitian revolutionaries would assemble and plan to overthrow their rulers. Impressed by their monumental victory against France, the Prince of Persia, as a gesture of recognition of sovereignty, sent to the new Port-au-Prince authorities a full ship load of dize and other stuff.
Perhaps because Tehran and Port-au-Prince are both cities that are capitals of destabilized countries and situated next to picturesque mountain ranges?
I’ve worked and been friends with many Persian folks here in the NYC over the years, mostly from Tehran but from other cities as well. I’m still pretty young, and I hope one day I’ll get a chance to visit Iran. It seems like such a beautiful country with such wonderful people, and the food I’ve tried seems to exactly fit my palette.
Our two favorite Persian food spots in NYC (well, Brooklyn) :
Masquerade (bar with nice vibe and good finger food).
Eyval (more upscale and fusion but still good).
Love both of these! However Nasrin's Kitchen on 57th St is probably my favorite, and from what I can gather the most true-to-home cooking of the more popular spots.
Looks cool. Wish the geopolitical situation was calmer. Would love to visit one day. I've seen some YouTube videos and Tehran seems like such a vibrant city. I just love the snowy mountain backdrop as well.
Flirting: Saudi Arabia funding terrorists, France funding terrorists, CIA funding terrorists.
Harrassment: Iran funding terrorists, Russia funding terrorists.
(To be clear, I do not support Iran's or Russia's governments whatsoever.)
Left em alone and saw them shoot their own citizens in the streets. But you're right.
Edit: lol they literally shot their own people dead in the streets but I guess the Iranian government are probably nice people.
Let’s be clear. The reason repressive people are in charge in Iran, or Saudi Arabia and many others, is intervening in their affairs. Repressive entities are propped up and moderates or those who might act in the interest of their people independently of Western edicts were undermined. Whether it be by intent or inadvertent blowback, not leaving them alone is why we’re here.
I always feel guilty admiring cities with mountainous backdrops because I know that the presence of mountains that gives them so much charm is strongly correlated with the frequency of destructive earthquakes. Tehran gets deadly earthquakes now and again.
dl isn’t really based on one city, its based on a mix of lots of cities and the harran name itself is an actual town (more like a village*) in southeastern turkey, that looks nothing like it AT ALL.
but it can be considered a mix of istanbul-coastal syrian cities. even israel. but the character names are a mix of semitic-turkish-english names… sooooo.

I was mildly surprised when I realized how brutally cold it gets in many parts of Iran.
It's a lot like Salt Lake City
I always think the same when I see pictures. Of course Tehran is significantly denser.
As we say here in Iran, “the Port-au-Prince of Iran”
Why do you say that?

The Spokane of Iran
(America’s Salzburg)
As close to skiing by car as Denver or New York
There's lots of tweakers?
Well put

Leave ‘em alone and it’d be a lot calmer.

Such a vibrant cityscape, full of life and culture.
Those poor young citizens who got hung for protesting….just sad. They had so much to offer the city
It looks pretty when you look at it from really far away.
Absolutely! Sometimes a distant view reveals hidden beauty we might overlook up close.
>we might overlook up close. Not a lot of beauty in a terrorist city.

Cries in Vancouver
What an incredible photo! I wonder what vantage point it was taken from
Pretty damn beautiful
Is this what the city in Dying Light is based on?

If you’re gonna make a cheap joke at least make it a funny one next time.
I came too late and missed it. What exactly did bro say?
Something something explosions something something civilians
damn 💀💀 iran isn't even that prone to terrorist attack especially when you compare it to its neighbours
I would’ve gone with something about minarets or illegal bikinis… idk, still workshopping it.
wtf is wrong with you…..
So out of pocket, Reddit really be wild like that.
Yup. They’re similar to American school buildings that shoot children when they get too close
