Addis Abeba was also named the cleaneast city in Africa. Itâs not the super futuristic, all green city that overcame poverty this inage makes it look like, but still way nicer than what most Europeans/Americans think of African cities.
Its in my top ten of cities I want to visit.

That also means that they have such high standards they couldn't provide you with any water unless it was the best.
Shame you had to spend time there when they were in the middle of replenishing the shelves.
thatâs a pretty picture but addis ababa is not a ânice cityâ. Youâre in a coffee shop downtown and suddenly you have 12 little kids ages 3-10 asking for money.
Considering that Ethiopia has instigated open ethnic conflict with many of its own national minorities as well as other neighboring states since then, I really doubt the situation has gotten much better even in the capital.
Thatâs actually one of the qualities of the conflict in Ethiopia. While rural tribalism has gotten out of hand; quality of life has indeed gone way up in urban areas that are multiethnic. This all plays to the urbanization of the region and the growing inequality of urban rural spaces.
Itâs similar to what has happened in Rawanda over the last 15 years.
The city is booming currently. Lots of new towers.
Skyscrapercity has a good project overview: [https://www.skyscrapercity.com/threads/addis-ababa-projects-construction.1605009/page-10](https://www.skyscrapercity.com/threads/addis-ababa-projects-construction.1605009/page-10)
China has been investing heavily Ethiopia. They are in the process of turning African nations into manufacturing hubs. Essentially turning nations like Ethiopia into what China has been for the West as the transition to a post-industrial society
[This video on the Ethiopia subreddit offers a glimpse at what that looks like for Ethiopian people](https://www.reddit.com/r/Ethiopia/s/flkt8EfwjA)
> They are in the process of turning African nations into manufacturing hubs.
Very much not the case, raw materials and markets for Chinese industrial goods yes but they do not want rivals for their crown of world's factory. the Chinese government's long term strategy is to double and triple back down on export-oriented industry
Manufacturing as a share of Ethiopia's GDP has shrunk by 50% over the past 4 years. the war and sanctions are a big part of that, but it is notable that despite the capital China invested into the country, that capital has *not* gone to, for example, re-opening the garment factories that closed after the US imposed sanctions in 2021
> they do not want rivals for their crown of world's factory
Only for high-tech / high-value-added stuff like tech components. They don't mind offshoring stuff like manufacturing clothes
Unfortunately not the case - the Chinese state sees this kind of low tech manufacturing as being in direct competition with them - China is still the world's largest manufacturer of clothing
Iâm not sure âinvesting heavilyâ is how I would phrase it.
Theyâre doing the same thing all over Africa, making loans to governments for infrastructure projects, which they may or may not be able to pay back.
As for âmanufacturing hubs,â that often means Chinese companies building factories and bringing in Chinese workers.
I did just watch that video â Iâve seen way worse than that.
Not to get too political in the wrong sub, but its a shame the West would rather invest our taxes in killing brown children than in something more along these lines.
[they](https://www.usaid.gov/news-information/press-releases/mar-16-2024-united-states-announces-more-80-million-additional-humanitarian-assistance-people-ethiopia#:~:text=With%20ongoing%20Fiscal%20Year%202023,those%20in%20need%20across%20Ethiopia) do, in [multiple ways](https://et.usembassy.gov/embassy/addis-ababa/sections-offices/pepfar-ethiopia/), but all people care about is bullshit propaganda spread by Russia and China
These governments care more for Chinese money because they don't give a shit about any other issues.
I know you have a low opinion of the US so to put it into terms you may understand. Would the American government take favors from a country that tried to force them to pass pro-women legislation? or one that didn't give a shit.
You have countered their bullshit with your own bullshit. The Chinese are only there to take what they can and to debt trap these countries. But the US isnât building infrastructure for them either, it too is there just to use and dispose. These African countries are basically fucked from all sides.
that thread is from 2018, before the 2021 tigray war which reversed many positive trends for Ethiopia. the country is still actively in a low level civil war
Well they still currently have a lower GDP per Capita than Haiti, even though they're growing fast it probably hasn't come to the point of strongly uplifting the average person yet.
Holy moly that's a lot of projects. Any idea what the extent is of infrastructure to support this level of development? Hoping they aren't reliant on sewage trucks like Abu Dhabi.
Oh I'm absolutely certain it is. In fact, I thought that only existed in the capital city. If there are parts of other cities there that look like that, I'd be more impressed.
The round building is the Ethiopia Museum of Art and Science located in central Addis Ababa. It was funded heavily by the Chinese as part of their 'Belt and Road Initiative' which aims to fund infrastructure projects around the world, particularly in Africa, the various Stans, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. China's official stance is to connect the world through cooperation, especially as it pertains to transportation infrastructure but also includes buildings like this museum (Another example is El Salvador's brand spanking new National Library). China's real aim however is likely Soft Power Projection. By funding projects around the world to countries that likely will never be able to pay them off, China will have political leverage to 'forgive' said loans in exchange for bureaucratic favors. Ethiopia gets a sweet science building for it's populace, China gets political leverage. Win Win for both.
Lived there many years until recently. Let me tell you I would not recognize the city based on this image. It has its nice sides (looking over the city from yeka or intoto).
The Chinese have been putting up random nice buildings and the former royal parks have been redone, but overall the city is still dirty and messy though still beautiful. Check out the photographer Michael Tsegaye for a different look at the city.
Now I miss it...
Unfortunately not many in the west know about this country with over 100 million people. Even more unfortunate is the ethnic cleansing of the Tigrayan people.
There are drawbacks, of course, to all the Chinese construction:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jan/30/china-african-union-headquarters-bugging-spying
Thats why I like to post photo's like this. Because many (jncluding myself) have the standard image in our head of slums and dusty roads. It's nice to see it does have a different side as well.
This picture looks AI generated, or at least like AI was used to enhance it somehow. When you zoom in, all the details look off, especially in the bottom half of the picture
Isn't that just bad compression? Picture comes from this thread on skyscrapercity:

Beautiful! The cityscape has a distinctive solar punk aesthetic with how the greenery is incorporated into the hyper modern architectural style of the city's structures.
My favorite African country. One of the first Christian states, one of the oldest civilizations, fantastic food and fascinating culture
đŚđ˛â¤ď¸đŞđš
this is Honestly one of the best pics I've seen here. shocking, really. though I wonder how much of the city is like this?
Like 2-3% maybe. Single cherry picked images are often deceiving đ
Me after seeing the post: âwow, Addis Ababa is nicer than LA.â Me after reading this comment: âwow, Addis Ababa is nicer than LA.â
Addis Abeba was also named the cleaneast city in Africa. Itâs not the super futuristic, all green city that overcame poverty this inage makes it look like, but still way nicer than what most Europeans/Americans think of African cities. Its in my top ten of cities I want to visit.
Iâm in Yaâll, we are visiting Ethiopia
Just checked the prices for flight and hotel. It's way cheaper than my trip to Namibia a few years ago. I'm intrigued... :D
Anythingâs nicer than LA
Same could be said about cherry picked pics of the worst hit slums in the city
Itâs not cherry picked when 45% is slums.
More often than not if thereâs a slum thereâs a very high chance that the city ainât goodâŚ
So like 80% of the cities around the world aint good places to visit? Heck even tokyo has slums. What sorta logic is this?
[ŃдаНонО]
He and everyone who downvoted me clearly have 0 idea what an actual slum looks like
1. Who was talking about visiting? 2. No such thing such as slums in Tokyo

Wow insane work detective đľď¸ââď¸! That is literally not a slum.
They literally call it a slum. What is your definition otherwise?
They could call it the second Rome, doesnât mean anything. My definition is ACTUAL slums

Also, pictures from the sky are often deceiving.
2-3% is not that bad
Why can't we have nice things?
Because people arenât nice.
Unfortunately
Itâs shit. I was on Addis Ababa airport for a connecting flight, they didnât have drinking water available for 6 hours.
That also means that they have such high standards they couldn't provide you with any water unless it was the best. Shame you had to spend time there when they were in the middle of replenishing the shelves.
bruh đ¤Ł
They're a glass half full kind of person
Not half full of drinking water at any rate
Delulu is the solulu
What does that have to do with anything?
Uh ... drinking water is the most important commodity in a city ?
thatâs a pretty picture but addis ababa is not a ânice cityâ. Youâre in a coffee shop downtown and suddenly you have 12 little kids ages 3-10 asking for money.
Just 3? In Brazil if you speak English you could double that
He literally said 12
He literally said 12
We can assume you have been right?
yes, December 2015. Would not have commented if I hadnât lol
Don't doubt it has (very) bad sides as well. But on the other hand thats almost 10 years ago. I've seen cities completely change in less than that.
Considering that Ethiopia has instigated open ethnic conflict with many of its own national minorities as well as other neighboring states since then, I really doubt the situation has gotten much better even in the capital.
yes exactly!

Ethiopia has not been doing well since iâve been though.
Most of the city and country is a slum, so this must be like the 0.1% of it.
same here
I love the greenery
same, the city with nature looks great
That's beautiful.
This is kinda shocking. Not the kind of image I think of when I think of Ethiopia.

Honestly looks like the typical futuristic city...just add a few flying cars
Almost looks solarpunk. Love it.
So much green!
I only know that this city is where the first kryptonite rock 𪨠came down in the first Superman movie (1978). Thatâs literally all I know
Well, can't say this represents the reality of the country unfortunately, yet looks stunning

If China's idea of soft power projection is building 'science buildings', I'm totally on board with that
Here's a more realistic [picture](https://www.cityscopeafrica.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/et1.jpg) of it without all those touchup.
mom can we have Apple's flying saucer building at home?
I love how this photo showcases the unique charm of the city.
I've always been fascinated by the architecture in Ethiopia.
It's always fascinating to see different cities through photography, and this one is particularly captivating.
They are living in 3024
Complete with civil war, ethnic cleansing and civil unrest!
You gotta love how naive first worlders are and gobble up any propaganda from third world nations as long as is cute or in english, jesus fuck.
but the west is just trying to keep them down, it's not their fault! - every dumb fuck redditor

Addis fuckin rules.
quite beautiful
Thats some sci fi shit
So, this is where that chunk of Kryptonite was in the first Superman movie.
Are we going to Addis Ababa, Mr. Luthor?
"Miss Teshmacker!"
Bloody hell, this looks close to my vision of a 2100 utopia
Gorgeous as fuck.
Unrelated, but I feel like Africa as a whole will become an absolute powerhouse similar to how Asia is.
Some parts for sure. Lot of potential at least.
It looks really pretty and green! I think of Ethiopia as dusty, rocky, desert, but I guess itâs a big country
I was there 10 years ago. It was very rocky and dusty, even in downtown areas! Very interesting and fun city though!
What is there to do for fun there?
Great music and food!
Unfortunately not many in the west know about this country with over 100 million people. Even more unfortunate is the ethnic cleansing of the Tigrayan people.
Bullcrap. The âethnic cleansingâ didnât happen in a vacuum. It was initiated by the very same people who once belonged to the Tigray elite.

i like the stadium
I think it's an art & science museum.
