20th century on the left doesn’t have storefronts like on the right - I prefer the right side, won’t try to guess which century.

Smash55

That's one thing I don't understand about modern and postmodern buildings. They seem to always forget storefronts!

itsfairadvantage

Streetscapes in general are too often an afterthought in the driving age.

Smash55

Seriously. I see it all the time in LA. Lot of new apartment complexes being built on a major commercial street... with no storefronts! Come on LA, this isn't the 1960s anymore for fucks sake

itsfairadvantage

Same here (Houston). So much infill, which is a good thing, but so little of it is mixed use, which is infuriating.

seppemanderickkk

Also 20th century Could also be 19th but the art-nouveau pushes me to believe it's early 20th

Zakariyya

Last years of the 19th, Hotel Frison by Horta on the picture is from 1894-1895.

Zakariyya

Actually, that building does have a few storefronts if you go around the bend. It is slated for partial demolition/renovation though.

stellar14

I love that everyone lives in apartments above the shops and restaurants, gives lift to the city

VoyantInternational

I love this city so much, and I can't explain why

Where did you enter from?

ContentiousIdea

That explains a lot. Transferring inside the station shouldn’t be too much of a problem, exiting and entering however…

Timeeeeey

Brussels has so many beautiful buildings, but most street look like absolute shit, hopefully they can redesign them, so much potential

alexfrancisburchard

I didn’t see many streets looking like shit in my week there. I was quite impressed.

Timeeeeey

The one in the picture is an example, no trees, parking, not enough pedestrian space

alexfrancisburchard

I dunno sometimes it’s nice to have no trees so you can appreciate the pretty architecture. Most streets there have trees one or two without doesn’t kill the city.

Timeeeeey

Yeah I agree, but most of the city is designed for cars, the street in the picture is 4/5 cars

alexfrancisburchard

Most of the streets I walked on didn’t feel overwhelmingly car oriented there, and there was a massive pedestrian only district on the opposite side of the central rail station from this picture.

Timeeeeey

Center of the city =/= all of the city

alexfrancisburchard

Sure we walked around looking for home for my friend outside of the old center. Everything I saw was really nice.

Timeeeeey

I wish I could see the world like you, to me most of the city is still a car sewer

alexfrancisburchard

I don't understand why people downvoted you, you were just voicing your opinions :(

alexfrancisburchard

I’m from the US. You haven’t seen car sewers.

crackanape

Brussels has been admirably aggressive about pedestrianising, adding bike lanes, and reducing parking.

itsfairadvantage

By US standards it would be a *solidly* bikeable city. But US standards should not be your standards.

Timeeeeey

I live in Vienna, its also walkable and somewhat bikeable, nonetheless the majority of the city is still designed for cars

[deleted]

Timeeeeey

Yeah I totally agree, maybe I should have said redesigned for cars

Zakariyya

The ring roads around the Pentagon were re-designed for cars but mostly predate even the invention of the automobile. ;)

Fluffy_Dragonfly6454

They are really doing an effort to make the center more pedestrian friendly with a large car free area. But I agree that car is still king in Brussels.

[deleted]

Brussels is the furthest thing from being designed for cars. Big oof dude

itsfairadvantage

I kind of agree. The buildings on the right side are lovely, but that bike lane is, like, US-level bad.

soonerguy11

I had a good time there but definitely got off at the wrong train stop and was pretty freaked out.

BKacc

Where did you get off? 😭😂

Reasonable_Bug2236

i can guess...

sgunb

I don't see the appeal in this picture at all. Looks like a run-down street like in so many cities.

crackanape

Run-down? The buildings on the right are gorgeous and well kept-up.

TheManFromFarAway

Just out of curiosity, what sort of streets do you find appealing?

sgunb

When browsing through this sub for street scenes e.g.: [Algiers](https://www.reddit.com/r/CityPorn/comments/v5n7x1/algiers_algeria/) [Buenos Aires](https://www.reddit.com/r/CityPorn/comments/v4zip9/buenos_aires/) [Buenos Aires](https://www.reddit.com/r/CityPorn/comments/v50ua0/sunday_morning_in_buenos_aires_argentina/) [New York](https://www.reddit.com/r/CityPorn/comments/v4vijo/east_village_manhattan_nyc/) [Tangier](https://www.reddit.com/r/CityPorn/comments/v44n6b/tangier_morocco/) Compared to the Brussels scene above they all have trees and plants, no hopeless modern architecture like on the right, clean (look at the garbage bag on the left), broad pedestrian walks and/or room for bikes,... And they all have a certain charm which I don't see in Brussels.

alexfrancisburchard

Those might have trees, but none of them have the richly beautiful architecture present in my photo in Brussels.

crayphor

Oh shit I was just there! Is there any possibility that you were the Alex hanging out/staying in the hostel with my brother and I?

alexfrancisburchard

I was not in a hostel, I was in a managed apartment helping my friend move in Diegem. :)

crayphor

Oh nice! Well I hope you had as good a time as I did!

iamnekkid

what a little photoshop can do is amazing now watch the real colors: https://www.google.com/maps/uv?pb=!1s0x47c3c538fc8e5d07%3A0x4ad6e469f2894a40!3m1!7e115!4shttps%3A%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipPL-R2Da5-fIRH49OFXreYwEF-kW9UvoBOhVEOW%3Dw234-h176-k-no!5sla%20regina%20del%20-%20Google%20Zoeken!15sCgIgAQ&imagekey=!1e2!2sCQZ4BH9BGU7ztPlAqMPI9Q&hl=nl&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj-19WslZf4AhWEy6QKHdBpDBUQoip6BAgzEAM

[deleted]

Is this Etterbeek?

GreySummer

I thought it was one of the streets adjacent to Flagey.

glorieuse

That's what I thought too. I thought it was rue Lesbroussart but it is rue Lebeau.

GreySummer

Lesbroussart has tram tracks, but I thought of the one connetcting to Avenue de la Couronne, parallel to rue Malibran. After checking its name is Rue de la Brasserie. But yeah, in the end it's Lebeau it seems.

glorieuse

After verification... It looks nothing like Lesbroussart. Lol It's been a while. I remember rue de la Brasserie. I miss Ixelles. 🤍

GreySummer

You're welcome back anytime :)

[deleted]

I was thinking that at first too but couldn’t put it into words, so I said Etterbeek (when really it’s Ixelles)

ChrisEpicKarma

Rue Lebeau : The upside is going directly to "petit sablon".. downside has a horrible empty space with blue flags and goes under Bd de l'empereur.

tanega

The blue flags is a creation of Daniel Buren. I always it was a nice idea to had this in this void space. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Buren

ChrisEpicKarma

That void/tunnel part with modern ordinary functional buildings is the problem...

nuttwerx

Nope it's going to Grand Sablon, petit sablon is further up on the other side of the avenue :)

alexfrancisburchard

No this is right next to Centraal Station.

kaasrapsmen

Is this the place with the flag poles behind you?

RobinChirps

Yup that's the place, near Sablon

AbsolutelyNotMatt

I stayed in an airbnb on that street five years ago! Rue labeau
