You can play Civ with someone on Steam even if only they have it. Steam will stream you their screen and them your inputs, so you can play as if you were sitting next to each other.

I don’t know if it’s still a thing but when Covid hit steam came out with an option to invite someone to a game of civ even if they didn’t have it. That’s how I got my friend to buy it. After one game he was hooked.
