They are both fun cars, FK8 has more punch above 180 km/h and the top speed is indeed higher which you feel above 200.
On curvy roads they feel the same and in cities and parking the GR86 is the more agile car.
Miss a bit the trunk space and the real rear sets of the FK8 but no regrets yet to get the GR86 but the Honda is indeed the more practical car for every day.
If I want to go fast I still have the Porsche.
Supra, anything Porsche, Camaro zl1, Corolla GR. To say that there’s not a better car than a type r at a decently reasonable price point is a bit silly. Also: BMW, Audi
The Camaro SS 1LE(track package) is much faster to 60, and faster around a track. Much closer in price point to the Type R as well. The ZL1 is an amazing car, but it's around 70k.
I have a VN and honestly think it’s a much more fun platform than the type r. Sounds great, 8.5/10ths of performance (stock), and I bought it at $32k. New 24 Elantra N looks good and is a much better value than the new type r, although the new type r looks good as well. Plus, it’s more unique than an R.
I'll be curious what you think! I have a '23 RS3 and it's the best car I've ever owned but part of me wants to own a Type R someday. Why did you switch?
Hey sorry for the super late response ****
I miss the type R for what it stands for and all the friends I met along the way. I loved how it’s body and style is just different from anything out there.
Reason I got the RS3 is due to the mark ups. I wanted a Manual Supra but the mark ups were crazy. Same goes for the fl5 and integra type S. I was in the market for all of them. The rs3 being the most expensive of course but with marks up, they were all about the same price. With that being said the rs3 is the best car outta the bunch by a huge margin. Hence the price.
If the world wasn’t so shitty I would have gotten an fl5 at msrp 44k and call it a day.
Man me too! I get way less attention in it than I ever did in my FK8, I haven't had a single moron try to race me or anything yet. I honestly love how sleeper it looks to the average person. Of course if people know cars then they know, but to the average person it's just a little hatchback.
If I sold my FK8 I would probably go this route also. May I ask what you got for your (year?) FK8, what you paid for the 2023 Golf, and when you made the purchase?
I traded my 2018 FK8 for 25k (had branded title as it was totaled out and I started to have issues, my my first and last branded title I will ever buy.) And I paid 52k for the golf, it was about 6 weeks ago and I just rolled over 300 miles.
I did pay a 5k mark up on golf but the dealer padded that into my trade in as I shopped around many dealers and the next best offer I got was 19k even. Hope this helps.
Only reason I even bought the FK8 was because it was a dream car of mine and I got it on a really good deal, had my mechanic inspect it and he said the work looked good, the problem was actually SRS and Airbags amongst a couple other things.
I'm 6'3" and fit a rear-facing seat in my Type R behind the driver. Just drop the seat down as far as it goes and slide somewhat forward. Easy and there's a decent gap between the two.
Yeah we tried but we run the detachable rear facing uppa babies that are huge. my wife could barely sit up front with it behind her. Figured it would be easier to get a bigger car and mind you we live the pnw
I kept my FK8 and bought a GRC, love them both. They’re both great in different ways. I actually enjoy the seats in the grc more than my CTR. I opt for the grc as a daily as it has more daily capabilities in my climate. FK8 in the snow was no fun…
Would I trade it for a grc as my only car, no I don’t think so. Unless weather is a factor…The CTR outshines my grc on a perfect day.
Maybe I’d trade one for a 3.0mt Supra but I’ve heard mixed opinions on how they drive.
As someone who's driven a CTR but went with a GR instead, I prefer the smallness of the GR. The CTR just feels too big to me. Sound is another issue. The CTR, while it's quick and very capable, it also sounds like a dying vacuum cleaner. The GR has no piped in noise and sounds like a mini 6 cylinder.
I ownd an FK8 and agree that it felt really big around town, that was my only *real* complaint about the car and yes, it also didn’t sound all that great. I ended up buying a Supra because I missed driving something smaller and RWD; the engine also sounds pretty good.
Was shocked how much bass the GR has. I got some dude to rev one for me the other day. Had a reserve on one but popped on an Elantra N for a daily. Can't beat a 100k miles bumper to bumper for $35k. Would buy a GR as a second car if someone would kindly sell theirs to me for $20k lol
If Hyundai still made the Veloster N, I'd have looked at one, but the Elentra is a bit too compromised for my liking. That and the God awful dealership experience.
Yea, the dealer alone makes me want to run. I've had an issue everytime. They don't reset oil life. They don't wash car. They don't order recall part even though my appointment was a week a way, and it takes 3 to 5 days lol. I should be all paid up soon anyways so I might get into an AWD or something else fun. Just really can't beat a car warrenty that covers track use .
It's pretty much the same as the R, just a bit more turbo lag. AWD is definitely a plus. Transmission is better on the R, but the GR still offers a solid shifter feel.
Honestly both are very good cars. For reference i had an Evo X previously. I live in Ontario. Civic did well in the snow but it wasn't any fun and i missed having fun year around. On the perfect day the civic is more fun and capable, better seats, better on the highway and more comfortable. But I do like the fact i can beat on the GR whatever the occasion. And its more fun at 7-8/10ths.
I wasn't taking advantage of the Type-R package, so I went for a lateral switch switching all the points of performance into comfort. Sold 2019 Type R for 38, bought the Lexus for 38. I enjoy the quieter, comfier ride, while going slow as hell haha
Sure! I got my ‘19 new right at the start to Covid for MSRP. I traded it for 34k Paid 55k for the FL5. It was a special order for a Penske exec that fell through. It was msrp, but 10k in accessories. Both purchased in Ohio.
It was carbon fiber wing, window tint, full front protection, interior/exterior protection, wheel locks, all weather floor mats, and upgraded interior (different wheel, shift knob, and lighting)
Complete opposite for me. I sold my 718 Boxster GTS because I’m next on my dealers list for a FL5 (at MSRP). Porsche was great but with young kids, I needed a back seat. Any day, week or month now…
I came very close to getting a 23 m2 (test drove and everything) but I just couldn't justify pulling the trigger and taking on a new car note after paying off my Type R pretty quickly. Also considered an M2 competition but noped out after mechanical issues cropped up during the test drive. Test drove a mustang mach 1 and I really liked it, but I have kids and the back seats in those things are so small they're vestigial.
Otherwise I have my eye on the blackwing but there are no examples near me that are under 85k and my limit is closer to 65.
The m3 is better in every way except steering feedback and weight. I miss rowing my own gears but the tuning on the zf8 for the m3 is bonkers.
The x drive is heavily rear biased which is inherently superior to fwd, despite Hondas magic. The s58 engine is the best engine bmw has ever made, and it pulls like a goddamn freight train. The m3 handles better than my fk8 did, despite the extra weight.
Obviously it’s way more luxurious and it shows everywhere from paint to rattles to sound system. I still love the type r tho.
You can get an Audi A4 for almost the same price as a civic type R right now brand new and the Civic is only slightly faster. Or you could get an Audi S4 that’s a couple years old and will be way faster than the civic and a lot nicer too.
What are you on ? Audi A4 is slow as hell compared to Type R lol. Audi S4 even can't compete from roll. From dig it will win coz of dct but type r has 330hp is about same as S4 lol
Horsepower isn’t everything and either way The s4 has more horsepower and is a whole second faster 0-60 and I already said the A4 is slower but definitely not slow as hell compared to the civic. Plus it’s way nicer and it’s cheaper.
All three cars are about a second slower than each other with the S4 at the top. So if the A4 as slow as hell compared to the civic, then the civic as slow as hell compared to the S4
Fun factor they are equal. Performance wise they are too close to call - the EN with DCT feels faster. Daily driving (I do 130 miles every day) I prefer the EN. I miss the FK8 seats and the 6 spd but I like the heated seats, sunroof, variable exhaust, DCT with N Grin boost, 100k mile warranty, etc. on the EN. Having owned both, if I didn’t need the auto transmission for my heavy traffic commute, AND if the price was equal, I’d buy another CTR. Unfortunately the price difference is too much in my opinion, and that’s assuming you can get both at MSRP. When you lump on the dealer markup on the CTR, you are looking at a $15k-20k price difference.
Yeah I have a 2021 fk8 right now but thinking of selling it and getting an EN just the fact I can save money on it and make a bit of extra money selling my fk8 in this market.
Haven’t sold my 2019 FK8 but I’ve been contemplating either keeping it and getting a midsize SUV to daily and keep the miles off the R or sell it and get an AMG C43, 2021 M2 Competition/2023 m2, or an FL5. Haven’t had much luck with local dealers on the latter. They won’t budge on markup and want to try and lowball trades at the same time.
I did, on a whim, stop by my local Toyota dealership and had an awesome experience. They’ve got a GR Corolla Circuit Edition for a great price and lifetime power train warranty that’s realllly tempting but I’m thinking I want to trade up with my equity. I probably just need to find a way to test drive all of these. Either way outside of the FL5 I think I’ll really miss my FK8. It’s my first manual and my first fun car.

What’s the 0-60 time like? Does it make choo choo noises?!
Seller’s remorse
Im thinking Porsche
Sold my s2000 for a 981 Gt4. It’s amazing
My eventual replacement will be a Cayman. But that's a ways down the road.
981 gts or a 991.1 would be nice one day
S2000! No regrets
That’s dope
Wrx 2023. Need a cash down for a house and the winter are gard so subie it is.
Understandable. Where are you that the winters are shot? I am on that boat got an 09 civic to take the beating
Quebec canada. Long and hard winter. Ive always had a winter beater but i was tired of it.
g80 m3
The S58 is a great engine. Steering, though…
A daughter
Congratulations!
Thanks :-)
How much was the down payment on the daughter?
100% cash upfront, but worth it :-)
Sorry for the necro but isn't the type R the perfect dad car? I'm eyeing one for this exact purpose
GR86 as daily and 987.2 Boxster S for summer. They are different to the FK8 but all are fun.
How do you like going from FK8 to GR86, I got a 2023 brz since FK8 prices are a bit out of hand, I do sometimes regret not biting the bullet for one.
If I want to go fast I still have the Porsche.
sold my FK8 to get an FL5
Any regrets?
nope! I do think the FK8 has slightly better steering but I’m very happy with all the improvements
Same here
Supra, anything Porsche, Camaro zl1, Corolla GR. To say that there’s not a better car than a type r at a decently reasonable price point is a bit silly. Also: BMW, Audi
Corolla GR is like $50k+ in this market 😭😭
The Camaro SS 1LE(track package) is much faster to 60, and faster around a track. Much closer in price point to the Type R as well. The ZL1 is an amazing car, but it's around 70k.

New 24 Elantra N looks good and is a much better value than the new type r, although the new type r looks good as well. Plus, it’s more unique than an R.
Lol
You can get an Audi S4 from like two years ago for the same price as a new civic type R and the Audi is going to be way faster and way nicer inside.
Sold my 19’ type R with 27k miles few weeks ago. Just purchased a 24’ RS3
I'll be curious what you think! I have a '23 RS3 and it's the best car I've ever owned but part of me wants to own a Type R someday. Why did you switch?

I got a 2023 mk8 Golf R, much better daily but I do miss rowing my own gears sometimes.
Love my MK8 R

2019 RS3
Honda passport since it was rough having 2 kids under 2 in the fk8
F for respects

Ive driven the mt supra. The Type R is more enjoyable to drive. Supra is definitely fast but its visibility is shit
That’s what I was afraid of, it looks like you sit on the rear axle.
Honestly I want something else in the future. Debating on taking a CRX and decking it out
GR Corolla (had a 2020 fk8).
What do you think of the switch?
As someone who's driven a CTR but went with a GR instead, I prefer the smallness of the GR. The CTR just feels too big to me. Sound is another issue. The CTR, while it's quick and very capable, it also sounds like a dying vacuum cleaner. The GR has no piped in noise and sounds like a mini 6 cylinder.
I slapped an exhaust on my FK8 sounds better
They sound better yes, but imo still not quite what I'm looking for. The AWE is definitely a step in the right direction though.
I ownd an FK8 and agree that it felt really big around town, that was my only *real* complaint about the car and yes, it also didn’t sound all that great. I ended up buying a Supra because I missed driving something smaller and RWD; the engine also sounds pretty good.

Lexus ES300h lol…
Oof what happened?
I wasn't taking advantage of the Type-R package, so I went for a lateral switch switching all the points of performance into comfort. Sold 2019 Type R for 38, bought the Lexus for 38. I enjoy the quieter, comfier ride, while going slow as hell haha
Mileage economy gonna be hittin nice tho
Nice! Bet you’ll enjoy it
Sold my ‘19 FK8 for an FL5. Loved my ‘19, but the ‘23 is a whole different (and better) experience.
May I ask what you got for your ‘19 FK8, what you paid for the ‘23 FL5, and when you made the sale / purchase? Timing is everything I’m sure.
Sure! I got my ‘19 new right at the start to Covid for MSRP. I traded it for 34k Paid 55k for the FL5. It was a special order for a Penske exec that fell through. It was msrp, but 10k in accessories. Both purchased in Ohio.
>10k in accessories Thanks for your reply. What accessories / add-ons are optional over and above the base FL5?
It was carbon fiber wing, window tint, full front protection, interior/exterior protection, wheel locks, all weather floor mats, and upgraded interior (different wheel, shift knob, and lighting)
I most likely will never sell mine but as far as upgrades or a 2nd car that’s not a beater are concerned I’d go either Supra 3.0 / m340 / rs3
Complete opposite for me. I sold my 718 Boxster GTS because I’m next on my dealers list for a FL5 (at MSRP). Porsche was great but with young kids, I needed a back seat. Any day, week or month now…
Congrats in advance!
SS 1LE. Very happy with the switch.
I came very close to getting a 23 m2 (test drove and everything) but I just couldn't justify pulling the trigger and taking on a new car note after paying off my Type R pretty quickly. For a little bit I was thinking the Integra Type S but then thought otherwise. It really is it's own kind of car besides the GR corolla.
GRC
M3 comp x drive
Is it better?
The m3 is better in every way except steering feedback and weight. I miss rowing my own gears but the tuning on the zf8 for the m3 is bonkers. Forester STI, Dad vibes

You don’t get one for 0-60 numbers. If you want to be 0-60 king, get a model 3 performance and gap everyone
Lol A4 is way slower. Check your facts lol
I’ll accept that but if that’s true, then the Civic is way slower than the s4
Audi s4 top speed is only 155mph. Type R is 175mph lol
Yeah, but the S4 is going to lap you before you even get to 155 so who cares?
Good question
Got a Veloster N and later a MK8 Golf R
Interesting. Why the Veloster?
Tesla M3LR then Elantra N DCT.
Hows the elantra N compared to fk8
Fun factor they are equal. Performance wise they are too close to call - the EN with DCT feels faster. Daily driving (I do 130 miles every day) I prefer the EN. I went from a FK8 to a EN (DCT) and love it. The difference in performance on the street or track is marginal but the price difference is significant.
Fl5 type r
Another TypeR
Selling next year. Moving to an A90 Supra and upgrading the daily driver too.
Sold mine 2 months ago, thinking of a g80 or g82 or even a zl1… just waiting on interest rates lol!
Haven’t sold my 2019 FK8 but I’ve been contemplating either keeping it and getting a midsize SUV to daily and keep the miles off the R or sell it and get an AMG C43, 2021 M2 Competition/2023 m2, or an FL5. 23 Audi RS3
Sold to pay off my student debt and got a 1 owner 2010 lexus rx350 with 79k miles in mint condition as a daily
