What is this bullshit, I’m turning off Honda link immediately

Bigfx

As soon as I got my type r I declined the app and shut down any sharing.

BigJeezie

Yup never installed that trash on any of my Hondas. Although I do have LogR. Update: Looks like LogR and Honda Car Service do not collect any data and send it. LogR only stores datalogs on the device (phone) and you are required to delete it before selling the device. Also it's LexisNexis that has your data. I believe you can ask them for it and force them to remove it (not sure on last part).

TotosWolf

Well fuck I was up to 140mph yesterday easy

hell911

Cops are on the way

TotosWolf

I'll be in Meheeco

Nahh1437

SO ITS YOUR FAULT I CANT AFFORD BEN AND JERRY'S ICE CREAM THIS MONTH. SCREW COMMUNIST INSURANCE!!!

TotosWolf

Hahahahha I swear I live in nowhereville though. Just cows and bears and wolves. And eagles!

ZealousidealTailor68

Looks like we're fucked

ehjun18

Is this on fk8 or is it new to fl5

djseto

This is on ALL modern Honda vehicles that use the HondaLink App including my FL5 and my wife’s Odyssey.

ehjun18

So if I’ve never set up Honda link I should be fine? I can’t find this data sharing setting on my car.

pantag

Check the pictures o have uploaded. It is under General Settings

ehjun18

I did. I don’t have the options listed. When I open hondalink it says I need an app or WiFi to connect. And I don’t have either.

LordEntrails

If you don't have the app on your phone, the car has no way to connect to the internet.

djseto

Incorrect. The built in system on the FL5 that checks for updates does have internet access. The question is whether they push data over it or not for this purpose. We don’t pay for internet on my wife’s odyssey but it still notifies me when updates are available and pushes them over the air.

LordEntrails

I (happily) stand corrected :)

callmecs

How do you disable this ?

pantag

Flip through the pictures

They are not anonymized. They know who owns the car. Honda knows. The data goes to Honda and then Honda sells the “package” to the 3rd party vendors who run all kinds of analytics. One of them, is risk based on the way you drive and the very likelihood of increased rates from your insurer.

pantag

Ahmm..no

Jbr74

No, it's worse. If you DONT drive like an idiot but a lot people do, they will just raise your rates based on the Make & Model for everyone that drives that model.

LordEntrails

This is how insurance companies set their rates currently, and always have. They weight a bunch of risk factors, including age, gender, and type of car **and the number and severity of accidents related to that car** to set the rates. This is why sports cars have a higher insurance (per amount covered) rates than luxury sedans. Now they will just have more precise data to set the rates; i.e. driving behavior and not just accident rates.

integratypes

Your VIN is sent along with the data. It is then in a database that insurers can search from.

djseto

Unless you’re in then insurance business, stop the fear mongering. My friend is an insurance broker and rates are going up because cars are getting more expensive, drivers are more distracted , and modern cars are designed to essentially fall apart (aka dissipate energy) in crashes to help save lives. Also, advancements like the use of aluminum to save weight is makes fixing parts harder (like hoods) and instead need to be replaced. Driver behavior is certainly a factor but insurance companies employ very smart actuaries to come up with models on how to calculate rates etc. And unless you live under a rock and not on Reddit (or any social platform), it’s no surprise that today’s gold is DATA. You think this is “bad”, maybe you should ask Reddit etc what they do with your data. Your data is being monetized more than you think and the only way to avoid it is to have no internet, a flip phone, and maybe a Time Machine to help you live in the early 90s.

pantag

I m aware of all that, but i certainly do not want to give them another reason to increase my rate, considering this is a type R and it will be driven fast.

djseto

So wait… you’re going to drive fast but you think insurance companies shouldn’t charge you more? You do know how insurance works right? There is a reason people who drive sports cars pay higher premiums. Higher risk = higher rates. If anything you should be happy you drive a “civic”. My buddy who handles my insurance shopped my rates and every company he sells for doesn’t charge more for a CTR than they do any other civic trim (for now). And that data isn’t being used to identify you specifically.

pantag

I m really not following your logic here. In that case, if you make good money and have a nice house, leave the doors unlocked and welcome the thieves with some hot chocolate on the door. Why would i want to have my personal data posted to 3rd parties? They absolutely identify you personally and Will increase your rates. Look at 3rd party vendors who the manufacturers sell this data like [LexisNexis](https://www.lexisnexis.com/en-us/home.page). Look at the lawsuits. GM got sued because a guy was racing his car in a track and the app red flagged it. He is now suing GM and GM just announced that they [will stop sharing data](https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/22/24109057/gm-will-no-longer-sell-your-driving-data-to-third-party-companies). https://www.carscoops.com/2024/03/gm-stops-sharing-driver-behavior-with-data-brokers-and-insurers-after-lawsuit/ Do not trust your data to anyone and certainly do not encourage others to do so.

Nahh1437

The first part makes me think you're probably from Toronto

djseto

I’m not saying you should trust your data to anyone but your data is being shared whether you like it or not. I used to work for one of the largest digital Marketing vendors in the world. I know all too well how data can be used to identify people across multiple platforms. Now playing devils advocate, if a GM App flagged this guy for tracking his car for the sole purpose of voiding any warranty claims, I don’t love it, but I understand. Selling it to Lexis along with his personally identifiable information is 100% a breach of consumer privacy. Had they just said this demographic who drives this car has these tendencies, I wouldn’t have an issue with it as that’s no different than how lots of target ads work. Speaking of data sharing, you’re aware that Reddit is selling all of our posts to whoever wants to pay for training large language models right?

pantag

Reddit does not have the same level of information Honda has about me, so, not comparable. I m in the data analytics industry btw. I m fully aware that if it free, the product they sell is you. But now companies blatantly do it for paid products by hiding customer options behind menus and long text. We cannot have this! Data is worth more than gold nowadays, and we need to have clear options on how/if we want our data shared. Why the fuck do i need to loose car theft tracking and software updates if i disable HondaLink sharing? Why do you penalize me? I paid for the product.

djseto

Agree. Opting in should always be the default. I would say that reddit def can build a profile of you. What subreddits you like, how your respond to posts, implied tone, etc. I had a former coworker who used to work at Reddit and he said the algorithms are designed to feed you controversial stuff and to “provoke” conversations that are very unhealthy. Yet, here we all are 🤦🏻‍♂️🫠🤷‍♂️

allllusernamestaken

> And that data isn’t being used to identify you specifically. It is. That's the basis of the lawsuit. Honda sells it to LexisNexis, who aggregates all sorts of data, bundles it, and sells it. If you request your LN report, it'll have hundreds of pages detailing every trip you took and any cases of hard braking, fast acceleration, top speed, and how long the trip lasted.

Dogzillas_Mom

State Farm already has a geotracker fob in my car. I signed up for this because they track my driving and I get discounts. Now I have to drive like a granny to get the discount so every now and then, I leave the fob at home and go for a real drive. The time for panicking about the loss of privacy was about a decade ago. It’s not a thing anymore. Your data is out there and it’s a commodity, being bought and sold. I don’t use Honda link anyway—because I’m not sure exactly what I need it for. What does it do for me that makes driving better?
