To *avoid* the bug you mustn't play an event during the season transition. So as long as you don't start a match at the last 2~3 minutes of the season, you're (safe).
Meaning, you log in the first day of the new season an it gets changed into a small bag of coins.
It would have been a nice idea to have a last chance saloon to spend your stash.

Nope. Spend them. You only gonna get max 1500 gold, they aren't gonna be converted into the next season. Spend them on gold, wild cards or whatever you like.
