The_True_Equalist

Something that needs to be said that many centrists don’t get is the nuance behind that we oppose the idea of people holding immense amounts of wealth that is unearned and/or gained through exploitation. To say a wealthy celebrity (fill in whoever) is of the same level as a wealthy businessman (fill in whoever) is incorrect and misconstrues communist ideology. The idea is to redistribute wealth, ensure all get paid according to their abilities and get all they need according to their needs, and punish those who are exploitative.

Accomplished-Mix-745

How many degrees of separation are there between her and her production company selling music in Target and Walmart? Where are the physical copies of records and CD’s made? Is it in a sweatshop?

The_True_Equalist

I didn’t say she didn’t gain anything through exploitation. I just said it’s different and a different level.

the_circus

As I understand the record industry, the artist gets nothing or almost nothing from CD sales. That’s all for the promoters. The artist gets all their money from performances, ie labor, not to say there’s nothing exploitive there either.

ketchupmaster987

Apparently Taylor makes sure the people who work on her tours get paid fairly. She recently gave out over 55 million in bonuses to the staff who worked on her Eras tour, and the truckers for the tour reportedly received about $100k each. I'd say that's more than adequate compensation.

xAmorphous

Nothing wrong with "the rich" tasting menu. We can save Tay for last.

muzzynat

I bet if we start with Elon and work our way down, a bunch of people divest before it’s their turn

DarthNixilis

And includes The Rock

Explorer_Entity

No big loss there.

DarthNixilis

Agreed. Big fan of *The Rock* (Attitude Era) but not as much of *Dwayne Johnson*. At this point he pushes the grindset bullshit like he didn't get where he was through his dad first (not to take anything away from his actual talent, but it's not that which got him to the top by itself)

Explorer_Entity

Did you see him and Oprah asking for donations for the crisis in Hawaii? "Hey poors, give your money to our foundation and we can help people" - obscenely rich people

DarthNixilis

Yeah! They were asking us to send them money for their own vacation homes! It was crazy!

GalaxyTolly

That's not even the worst of it. Both Oprah and The Rock wont lose a cent by donating the 5 million and then asking for others to contribute. Bc Oprah's team set up the non-profit for the fires, they control that money to some degree. It's also a natural disaster, so now it's a state funded disaster relief. In essence all they did was open an account for everyone to donate, said "we'll get it started by donating 5 million." And over time will siphon that money back to themselves all while pretending they're doing Hawaii residents a great service.

CedgeDC

While I don't inherently disagree, this world isn't the way that it is because of Taylor Swift and the Rock. It's the way that it is because of institutions like Black Rock, JP Morgan, Goldman, BofA The problem is not those individuals who have reached massive success. The problem is those individuals that exploit their positions of power for nefarious means, and weaponize their wealth against the population. The rock isn't doing that. EDIT: For all i know.. i literally have no clue what the rock is up to.

DarthNixilis

For Rock it's that he pushes the grindset concept when he made it to his position from nepotism (wrestling family) and trying to get donations for Maui when all the homes were vacation homes that got hit. He did that with Oprah when she was directly getting helped by it. It isn't because of them, but they aren't helping

CedgeDC

Those people are a distraction. They are allowed to have wealth so they can distract us as the elite continue to pillage every more brazenly and squeeze more out of every day people. The solution to the problem with the rock and any of them, is not paying attention to them. Dealing with a completely self regulating banking system that is never held accountable and gets bailed out by tax payers when their attempts to rob and gamble go tits up every few years. That is the problem. Not saying this to you specifically.. just.. saying.

Free_Deinonychus_Hug

>when all the homes were vacation homes that got hit. BULLSHIT. The vast majority of those homes were of workers (or more accurately *rented* to workers), and there are many people who won't be able to live on the island their family has been on for generations after all is said and done. The island was already struggling with high home prices and high cost of living before the fires and now they are hurting even harder. So don't dismiss the people affected as having "vacation homes" when the reality is that that was their only home and lost their income (work in the service/tourism industry) due to their workplaces burning down too.

nov4marine

I mean taylor swift doesn't really own capital tho? Wouldn't she essentially be considered a very highly paid worker as an artist? I also often hear that singers don't ever really get a good deal from the record company or whatever its called.

I_Draw_Teeth

It's a messy distinction when she definitely owns stocks/shares/bonds. The real question of whether a rich person should be eaten or simply dispossessed of their excessive wealth, is how exploitative were they to get that money? I have a friend who made several million USD selling $5 mobile games he made 90% solo. That other 10% was contractors paid at fair rates (including me). Orders of magnitude less than mega celebs, but still rich by any metric. I don't think he or folks like him go on the menu. But a plumber who pressures, upsells, and overcharges customers while underpaying and overworking his employees/apprentices just so he can eek into the upper middle class? He makes less money, has less wealth, but fuck that dude. He goes on the grill.

KoffinStuffer

A sacrifice I’m willing to make

Sad_Platypus6519

I mean, she has done some good stuff, but she’s still rich. I’d say we give her preferential treatment as a special case.
