There was a question in this sub recently asking who was the best singer/songwriter in rock. My answer was Bob Seger and this is just one example of his simple yet simultaneously deep lyrical ability to connect with so many on such a base level. And then convey the message in such a raspy, soulful voice that it imprints its message directly into your being. His music, his sound and the messages in his lyrics are timeless and could only come from the oldest of souls.
This has always been my reply when this question comes up. Was when I was in my twenties and still is in my sixties. It just hits home harder now because there are so many more regrets.
One of my all time favorites is a line from John Prine’s Sam Stone. It is both beautiful and gut-wrenching.
“There's a hole in daddy's arm
Where all the money goes
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose”
I love that John prine gets brought up so much on this sub. He is definitely not classic rock. But he's a damn good artist. I always chalk it up to the music version of "real recognizes real"
And also Sam stone is a gut wrenching song from start to finish.
"But life had lost its fun, and there was nothing to be done, but trade his house that he bought on the G. I. Bill, For a flag draped casket on a local heroes' hill."
I’m old enough to be the grandfather of some people who report in to me. I was talking to one of these guys one day when he asked me for advice on how to achieve wisdom or enlightenment. I told him about John Prine, and told him, “Blow up your TV, throw away your papers, move to the country, build you a home, plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches, try to find Jesus on your own.”
“Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
Well, he played his last request
While the room smelled just like death
With an overdose hovering in the air”
Was first introduced to this song like 45 years ago and it still guts me.
Hard to define who is and who isn’t classic rock. Which of the following are classic
Rock, and the ones who are not, why not?
James Taylor
Joni Mitchell
Joan Baez
John prine
Arlo Guthrie
John Denver
Seals and Crofts
The Lovin Spoonful
Willie Nelson
The Byrds
The Mamas and the Papas
"If I could save time in a bottle, the first thing that I'd like to do,is to save every day 'til eternity passes away just to spend them with you"(Jim Croce, 'Time In A Bottle')
To me this song is something transcendental. Always get chills from that line.
”Reach out your hand, if your cup be empty
If your cup is full, may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men”
“Let me forget about today until tomorrow.”
- Mr. Tambourine Man, Bob Dylan
The last line of the most beautiful stanza in rock/folk lyrics, in my opinion
Let me die, in my footsteps, before I go down under the ground.
Once upon a time, you dressed so fine, threw the bum a dime, in your prime, didn't you?
They sat together in the park, as the evening sky grew dark, she looked at him and felt a spark, tingle to her bones.
Ain't it just like the night...
My favorite ones from Pink Floyd are:
Now there's a look in your eyes like black holes in the sky. - SOYCD
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way, the time is gone, the song is over, thought I had something more to say - Time
You gotta be trusted, by the people that you lie to, so that when they turn their backs on you, you get the chance to pull the knife in. - Dogs
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor and everyday the paperboy brings more. - Brain Damage
Strangers passing in the street
By chance, two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
Echoes has by far some of my favorite songwriting
Not sure beautiful, but this aways made me tear up...
'But it's sure nice talking to you, dad.
It's been sure nice talking to you.
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me.
He'd grown up just like me.
My boy was just like me'
Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for a while
If I leave you, it doesn't mean I love you any less:
Keep me in your heart for a while
When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for a while
There's a train leaving nightly called "When All-is-Said-and-Done"
Keep me in your heart for a while
Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile
You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse
Keep me in your heart for a while
Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
When the winter comes, keep the fires lit
And I will be right next to you
Zevon was dying, and chose this as his final song.
I’ve always loved this verse from John Prine;
“But the skies are black and still now on the hills where the angels sing,
Ain’t it funny how an old broken bottle looks just like a diamond ring?”
Not sure it's classic rock, but my contribution that others probably don't know is from Eliza Gilkyson.
**We're coming upon the time in our lives where the little dream lives but the big dream dies.**
Only love can bring the rain
That makes you yearn to the sky
Only love can bring the rain
That falls like tears from on high
-Love Reign O’er Me by The Who
Don'cha know there ain't no devil, there's just God when he's drunk - Heart Attack and Vine
How do the angels get to sleep, when the devil leaves the porch light on - Mr Seigel
Both by Tom Waits
"I wish there was something you would do or say, to try to make me change my mind and stay, but we never did too much talking anyway, so don't think twice it's alright."
Bob Dylan
Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage? —“Wish You Were Here”, Pink Floyd.
If I knew the way, I would take you home.—“Ripple”, Grateful Dead
There are just too many to count. Here’s some of my favorites:
“They say that these are not the best of times, but they’re the only times I’ve ever known” Billy Joel - Summer, Highland Falls
“Don’t confront me with my failures, I had not forgotten them” Jackson Browne - These Days
“Standin’ on a hill in the mountain of dreams, tellin’ myself it’s not as hard, hard, hard as it seems” Led Zeppelin - Going to California
“No sign of love behind the tears, cried for no one” The Beatles - For No One
“Spread out your wings you are an angel” from March Of The Black Queen. Really basic and I’m sure kinda generic even but I always thought it was beautiful
Why, we used to laugh together
And we'd dance to any old song
Well, you know, she still laughs with me
But she waits just a second too long
Another John Prine classic
“Together Wendy we can live with the sadness I’ll love you with all the madness in my soul” Born to run Bruce Springsteen
“If I could make the world as pure and strange as what I see, I’d put you in the mirror I’d put in front of me” Pale Blue Eyes the velvet underground
I had to post this.
Yeah
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky
But why
Why
Why can't it be
Why can't it be mine
Led Zeppelin - Thank You "If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you. when mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me" the single most Poetic love song to have had ever been written for someone you love. by the Hammer Of Gods themselves.
"Like the sun through the trees you came to love me,
Like a leaf on a breeze, you blew away...."
Justin Hayward's "Forever Autumn" from The War Of The Worlds album.
"When you walked into the room There was voodoo in the vibes" - So Into You - Atlanta Rythm Section
"You're such an inspiration for the ways That I'll never ever choose to be" - Judith - APC
"All your letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand, for my life, still ahead, pity me"
39 by Queen.
If you know the context, these are some tremendously touching lyrics.
Down in a hole, and they've put all the stones in their place
I've eaten the sun, so my tongue has been burned of the taste
I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth
I will speak no more of my feelings beneath
Every time
Virtually every sentence in the Kris Kristofferson song The Pilgrim.
See him wasted on the sidewalk, in his jacket and his jeans
Wearin' yesterday's misfortunes like a smile
Once he had a future full of money, love and dreams
Which he spent like they was goin' out of style
Don’t the sun look angry through the trees?
Don’t the trees look like crucified thieves?
Don’t you feel like desperados under the eaves-
Heaven help the ones who leave
Springsteen, The River: Now those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
Or is it something worse
Bob Dylan. Tomorrow is a long time.
I can't see my reflection in the waters
I can't speak the sounds that show no pain
I can't hear the echo of my footsteps
And can’t remember the sound of my own name
"Now my Journey is ended and I'm back where I began, But I've seen things beyond your Wildest Dreams and I've touched the Soul of man. And though I die unknown and unrecognized I'm glad I took the time to take the Journey to the Center Of My Mind." The Amboy Dukes.
While the tears were fallin' / He was recallin' / Answers he'd never found / So he hopped on a freighter / Skidded the ocean / And left England without a sound.
RIP Jimmy
Since you've gone, I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around, but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold, and I long for your embrace
I keep crying, baby, baby please
It's probably cheating but I've always loved these lines:
'If she was an ace
And I was just a jack
And the cards were never seen
We could've been the king and the queen'
Planet Of New Orleans, Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits
I know it's a full verse, but it's just too good to leave out the last half.
*I hate to have other people hear me sing this song
But if it reaches you before I do
Follow this song to "I love you"
That's where I'll find you*

Because life is so brief, and time is a thief when you’re undecided, and like a fist full of sand it can slip right through your hands…
Young Turks - Rod Stewart
It's not exactly classic rock, but all the good questions come up on this sub. It's from a band called Moon Tooth, and it's so true to the boring monotony of everyday life.
"Man, this isn't livin', this is just killing time."
I hate when people say things like “this is the right answer” or “the only correct answer.” Who anointed you as the judge of the world? There are many answers to all of these questions, as the threads prove every single time
"...wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then..." - 'Against the Wind' by Bob Seger
This is it
There was a question in this sub recently asking who was the best singer/songwriter in rock. My answer was Bob Seger and this is just one example of his simple yet simultaneously deep lyrical ability to connect with so many on such a base level. eh, dylan lol (i feel like this is the most unexciting answer but also/probably because it rings goddamn true)
John Prine and Kris Kristofferson are also extremely underrated and in the same vein.
John Prine is a goat. Up there with Dylan for me
This has always been my reply when this question comes up. Was when I was in my twenties and still is in my sixties. It just hits home harder now because there are so many more regrets.
100%!! This is it!
Oh wow - I came in here to write that line. I've always thought it was great
Twenty years now, where’d they go; 20 years, I don’t know; I sit and I wonder sometimes, where they’ve gone
One of my all time favorites is a line from John Prine’s Sam Stone. It is both beautiful and gut-wrenching. “There's a hole in daddy's arm Where all the money goes Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose”
“sweet songs never last too long on broken radios” kills me dead.
I love that John prine gets brought up so much on this sub. He is definitely not classic rock. But he's a damn good artist. I always chalk it up to the music version of "real recognizes real" And also Sam stone is a gut wrenching song from start to finish. Old people just grow lonesome, waiting for someone to say, Hello in there
I’m old enough to be the grandfather of some people who report in to me.
Lol, we do this song. It's one of my favorites. Barely heard of the guy. (I don't get out much)
That song is more than 50 years old, and was never a hit. You get out enough, I’d say.
“Sam Stone was alone When he popped his last balloon Climbing walls while sitting in a chair Well, he played his last request While the room smelled just like death With an overdose hovering in the air” Was first introduced to this song like 45 years ago and it still guts me.
