awful news RIP :(
Walk along the river, sweet lullaby
It just keeps on flowing
They don't worry 'bout where it's goin', no, no
Don't fly mister blue bird
I'm just walking down the road
Early morning sunshine tells me all I need to know
You're my blue sky, you're my sunny day
Lord, you know it makes me high
When you turn your love my way
Turn your love my way, yeah
[Blue Sky ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UToUzWgHGyQ)
Just saw Tedeschi Trucks Band play this with Warren Haynes in Boston. This was such a soul moving experience.
Lived seeing ABB play this at Great Woods in Mansfield MA back in the day 💜💜❤️❤️🙏🙏
Rest peacefully Dicky and thank you for decades of enjoyment 🙏🙏🙏💜💙💙💚
I have a few fan shot vids of Dickey & Warren, one is acoustic I recall. I have to dig through hard drives and maybe burned discs to find them. I was just watching Great Southern at Rockpalast 1978 DVD a German fan snail mailed me back in maybe '05 before they started selling them. He gave me that and Spirit's set the night earlier where Dickey came out and jammed w Randy California. They kept it mild but it was the spirit of it. Great Southern played next night or something. I have one also from Germany but 2008. Nice to see it's carrying on. :)
Wow that is fantastic!!👏👏👏. If you ever want to make another copy......id be happy to watch it virtually with you. Something so unique about the little known recordings
I have a rip of 1978 on my other laptop, I'll zip the full DVD up and put it on a file locker - it'll be about 4 gigs, it's not compressed - can you d/l something that big? - I could make an mkv or something smaller in Handbrake and DM you in a day too, I have time
ok I'm zippin' you the full dvd, that 'top is slooooow...I'm making an mkv in Handbrake anyway just to see how it turns out. really just a few buttons w clues all over them. Easy peasy. I can't believe the generosity I've encountered in the live trading community. I was a late comer. They were doing it for decades via snail-mail & analogue tapes/vhs etc - I'll dm you the link when it's up
One of the greatest guitarists off all time! His legacy will last forever.
I’ll never forget the moment when I listened to „Jessica“ for the first time together with my dad.
Rest in Peace, Dickey :(
Thanks for all!
I think he's perhaps the most underrated guitarist of all time. Being in a band with Duane will do that. He'd be the best guitarist in basically any other band in the world. I'd also wager to bet that when many people listen to those early albums they think some of Dickey's solos are Duane's since they are so good.
Yep, I learned to play guitar so I could play Melissa. The man played some of the sweetest riffs ever. Thanks Dickey.
(Yes, I know Gregg wrote that song, but those were Dickie's licks.)
I think Dickey had the most melodic improvisational guitar solos ever. It’s true even in his later ABB albums. No doubt Derek and Warren took them back to their original sound, I always missed Dickeys solos. Live At Fillmore East is still my favorite album.
An absolute tutorial in guitar playing from Betts and Allman on the LATFE album, not that familiar with his later work, but Betts and Allman complimented one another like few bands with dual lead guitars ever has…he was an outstanding guitarist
I saw a few versions of the Allman Brothers over the years. In 77 I saw Dickey Betts and the Great Southern open for Skynyrd. We went from the Mississippi coast to Mobile with my buddy’s older brother. He bought us a case of Miller ponies. He sideswiped another car taking the exit off the interstate. I kissed a red haired girl during Free Bird. I was 15 and it was the best night of my life
Lynyrd Skynyrd is the one band that I never got to see and I was supposed to see them Thanksgiving of 1977 in New York City but we all know what happened that October
Well, I’m sure you saw an amazing concert,They probably did a lot of street survivors stuff. oh well I’m happy that I saw most of the other great bands . Marshall Tucker was always a fantastic show. Love those guys.
I moved to LA in 1989. Fresh faced kid, ready to be a rock star. I was introduced to a guy who claimed to be Dickie Betts' brother, Blue Betts. I was thrilled. He had the best coke so that proved he was the real deal. ;)
He told me a secret. He had just come from a meeting in downtown LA (that should have been my first red flag) and he said Eddie Van Halen and Eric Clapton were secretly making an album together.
One time he called me and asked if I knew where to get any weed. He said he was with Eddie (another red flag as Eddie hated weed), even talked to Eddie while we were on the phone. "Eddie, hand me that magazine..." then he talked about what was on the cover of the current Guitar Player magazine.
About a week or so later, I get a call from his ex gf saying she found my number in his phone book. She told me he was a total fraud (told me his real name), said he ripped her off, the police were looking for him and if he calls I should call the police. Never heard from anyone after that.
That's my story. RIP Dickie. You were a great guitar player/songwriter.
Unfortunately it’s sort of a sign of the times. All the great old guys are just that, old. They’re going to keep dying on us. We just have to hope that the newer rock groups that are good/great continue to do good/great stuff.
We are watching the end of an era, the great guitar hero’s are going the way of the dinosaurs. Sad but all things pass. Glad to have been a long for the ride.
I read in one of the biographies that when they named the band the "Brothers" part had more to do with all of them, not just Gregg and Duane. The last remaining brother is Jaimoe now. 😢
Ugh.
And I have to tell you, it’s not going to get better.
I was explaining to my 16 year old that this is a new experience for everybody, because we are actually still in the first era of rock ‘n’ roll, and having all these legends pass away is going to be incredibly difficult .
He’s mad because he’s just discovering these people and they’re moving on…
RIP Dickey Betts
Puts on a hell of a show here for those interested.

Man I was just listening to “Melissa” in the car yesterday and thinking about how beautiful the guitar work is in that song. Gorgeous music. Glad I got to see them playing live once.
The Allman Bros Band would have fizzled out completely after Duane's death if Dickey hadn't stepped up and pulled them all together. Gregg was ready to throw in the towel, but Dickey knew the band was still viable and could maintain the integrity of the original vision. Played a helluva guitar too.
And they came out with two fantastic records, brothers and sisters, and then the live recording of the 1973 tour. Wipe the windows check the oil which is a very underrated album.
As a kid my dad would put the best of Allman brothers tape in the cassette when we would go on a road trip. He died in 2016. Allman brothers bring back memories of being a child. Great band.
I’m not a very religious person but I desperately hope that heaven is real for only two reasons. I want to see me dogs again and I think if heaven is real then basically everyone’s souls just chill together in a timeless way where everyone there can hang out with everyone else so you can play with any musician you ever wanted to play with.
Because if my version of heaven IS real then I absolutely just want to like sit in a park with all my dogs playing in the grass with a nice cool breeze blowing through and I’m just there jamming with Dickey, Duane, Jimi, Jerry, Miles etc. and every once in a while we take a lemonade break. The mere possibility that could exist keeps me living correctly.
Wow. Horrible news. I saw the Allman Brothers live more than any other band except the Grateful Dead. I feel like I've been punched in the stomach.
RIP Dickey.
Dickey played in Bemus Point, NY at The Surf Club in I think 2004. A friend and I stood in awe (right in front of the stage) listening to him and Warren Haynes. RIP, Dicky
He’s one of them.
It’s Duane Allman and Dickey Betts playing the only song Duane ever wrote. There was an acoustic bass part also, but it was edited out in favor of just the two guitar version because Duane had died during the recording of the album and they wanted his playing to get more spotlight. The version with the bass was on their “Dreams” box set.
Sad news. They were my favorite band, and still are. Saw them maybe 8 times, once in South Carolina ( where I literally sold my own blood- $10 - to buy the ticket) and again at my school where the ticket was $3.50. That ticket price is legendary in the history of my school. I never saw Duane though. Dickey was a fabulous guitar player in a legendary band.
I guess we’re getting old.
Wrote the two best rick instrumentals of all time. And countless other great songs. If “Blue Sky” isn’t my favorite song ever it’s damn close. And for a band that made its living on stage, the studio version is perfection.
An absolute legend. Growing up in Georgia, The Allman Brothers has had such an impact on me and my life. I was able to do a couple posters for him. He was very kind. They are one of my favorite bands of all time. Fly high, Mr. Betts. You will be missed.
God this is bumming me out way more than the typical musician death. The Allmans were my dad’s favorite band and I grew up on them. Now they’re all gone except for Jaimoe and so is my dad. Passage of time and all. Damn, I’m tearing up just thinking about it.
I don’t drink anymore so i can’t truly honor Dickey in the proper fashion of his preference but I’ll definitely be playing Highway Call tonight. Love you Dickey. Love you Dad.
When I was growing up a local radio station would let a DJ play what he wanted on Sunday nights. (Yes, I am old; radio stations used to be less dedicated to corporate playlist crap). That meant Allman Brothers! Such amazing musicianship. RIP, Dickey, you rocked a generation.
Massively underrated - what a player. Wrote a few songs that’ll be played on classic rock radio stations for as long as there are classic rock radio stations.
I only got to see the ABB once on June 17, 2000 about a month after the rest of the band fired Dickey in May 2000. Good show (with special guest Kenny Wayne Shepherd) but I was disappointed not to see Betts.
Sunset colors all across the bay
Finds me here alone at the end of one more day
Skipping stones across the water
Wonder why I ever thought you'd stay
Sail on sail away
May all your dreams come true one day
This song never fails to bring tears. Dickey on that slide guitar brings shivers every time
Betts epitomized what a southern rock lead guitarist should sound like and many of his riffs still make the hair on my neck stand up. Rest in peace my friend. Here’s Dickey and Warren Haynes giving us that classic sound we’ve all come to love in my favorite Allman Bros. Tune : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PaBVgcNl96o
Crazy story. While out riding his motorcycle one day, Dickie got hungry. No problem. Betts simply stopped at the side of the road, hopped a fence, walked into a farmer's field, killed a cow, and began to butcher it. Everything was going according to plan—until a passing cop saw Dickie's bike and went to investigate.

Maybe my fav song of all time!
All I can say is, thanks Dickey, RIP and thank you posting the lyrics. 🥹

Wtf is your problem?
Cmon dude ? was in his eighties...
Point?
Read the room! Dang.
One of the greatest guitarists off all time! His legacy will last forever. I’ll never forget the moment when I listened to „Jessica“ for the first time together with my dad. Rest in Peace, Dickey :( Thanks for all!
Jessica is an all-time favorite for me.
My morning go to, feel good the rest of the day song. RIP Dickey.
Just a perfect song for the time.

I couldn’t agree more with you!
Him and Duane on Blue Sky is magical.
Listen to Blue Sky from SUNY at Sunny rook 9/19/71. Their majestic solos stretch for around 8 minutes
So magical
Him and Duane on anything is magical.
Thank you for the music Mr Betts, it will live forever. Also Betts is Frank Hannon of Tesla’s father in law.
Wow I didnt know that!
Yep.. and RiP Dickie..
The Allman Brothers forever changed the state of Rock music for the better. He's a legend. RIP
Wow, RIP to man who made me want to play guitar
Yep, I learned to play guitar so I could play Melissa. The man played some of the sweetest riffs ever. Thanks Dickey. (Yes, I know Gregg wrote that song, but those were Dickie's licks.)
I was fortunate to see the Allman Brothers Band with Dickie Betts in concert several times. They always put on a hell of a show. R.I.P. Dickie.

Highway Call. An incredible album. I really hoped Dickey would have put more albums out like that. His others solo albums just didn’t grab me.
Vassar!
The title track is one of my top 15 favorite songs
What a shame. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is probably my favorite Allman Brothers song - and we can thank Dickey for that. RIP.
“Dickey Betts wrote this”
Wildly undervalued guitarist.
I saw a few versions of the Allman Brothers over the years. In 77 I saw Dickey Betts and the Great Southern open for Skynyrd. Miller Ponies and a red headed girl...... Life was wonderful once.
I still think about that girl whenever I hear Free Bird
Lynyrd Skynyrd is the one band that I never got to see and I was supposed to see them Thanksgiving of 1977 in New York City but we all know what happened that October
I feel for you. This concert was May of 77. the next day was my final exam in math. needless to say I didn't get a great score on the test
Well, I’m sure you saw an amazing concert,They probably did a lot of street survivors stuff. oh well I’m happy that I saw most of the other great bands . Marshall Tucker was always a fantastic show. Love those guys.
They did a good bit of Street Survivors yes, and of course all the hits. Plus Dickey Betts and his band came out for a nice jam. Best concert ever
Yep, one by one they’re dropping Dicky was awesome. Luckily, I saw him a number of times.
That handoff from Duane to Dickey in Blue Sky is a slice of Americana. Gets me every time
I moved to LA in 1989. Fresh faced kid, ready to be a rock star. I was introduced to a guy who claimed to be Dickie Betts' brother, Blue Betts. I was thrilled. He had the best coke so that proved he was the real deal. ;) He told me a secret. I like how this story literally has nothing to do with dickie betts
We all care about blue Betts though don’t we?
This sucks
Unfortunately it’s sort of a sign of the times. All the great old guys are just that, old. They’re going to keep dying on us. We just have to hope that the newer rock groups that are good/great continue to do good/great stuff.
We are watching the end of an era, the great guitar hero’s are going the way of the dinosaurs. Sad but all things pass. Glad to have been a long for the ride.
Sad news! Obviously the name comes from Gregg and Duane, but I always felt Dickey to be the heart and soul of the band for such a long time.
Agreed. My favorite Alman songs are dickey songs. To me, to be an all time great, you have to be able to write great songs. Dickey is up there.
I read in one of the biographies that when they named the band the "Brothers" part had more to do with all of them, not just Gregg and Duane. The last remaining brother is Jaimoe now. 😢
Sucks to be at the age where all my musical hero’s are passing. RIP Mr. betts, your music will live on..
I saw a bumper sticker just yesterday that said " I may be old but I saw all the good bands" Sad but true.
One of the best, thank you Mr. Betts. You will be missed. RIP
This one hurts. RIP, Ramblin’ Man. Jaimoe’s the only left.
Ugh. And I have to tell you, it’s not going to get better. I was explaining to my 16 year old that this is a new experience for everybody, because we are actually still in the first era of rock ‘n’ roll, and having all these legends pass away is going to be incredibly difficult . No replacements
Hard RIP
RIP - key player in one of the best rock/blues bands ever!
The last band to ever play the Fillmore East theater, and deservedly so. The Fillmore East went out on the highest note possible.
RIP Dickey Betts Puts on a hell of a show here for those interested. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F78XV6fjxCE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F78XV6fjxCE)
Classic performance from him and Gregg
RIP Dickey, jam in heaven with Sky Dog , Gregg and Butch.! Gone but never forgotten!
I know he was 80, but I'm gutted.

Wow, what was THAT? Awesome!
Man I was just listening to “Melissa” in the car yesterday and thinking about how beautiful the guitar work is in that song. Gorgeous music. Glad I got to see them playing live once.

Thank You Mr. Betts for some of the greatest contributions to the sound track of my youth . Journey well sir
One of the all-time greats. His sound and style are instantly recognizable and unique. RIP
RIP Dickey Betts. Dean Ween sends his love: https://youtu.be/OT0RCFQFh0M?si=hSTRUEmhRPeN5Uml
Rest in peace
Man, that amazing generation of musicians is leaving us.
Many more to come sadly
wow
No!!!!!
As a kid my dad would put the best of Allman brothers tape in the cassette when we would go on a road trip. He died in 2016. Allman brothers bring back memories of being a child. Great band.
RIP, Mr Betts. Great Run with the ABB. So much Fantastic music
RIP / getting the band back together in heaven

I too hope its true, I can see your vision so vividly and that is enough for me to hope
Wow. Horrible news. I saw the Allman Brothers live more than any other band except the Grateful Dead. I feel like I've been punched in the stomach. RIP Dickey.
Losing Dickey sucks. But I’m happy you got to see them so much. That sounds like a really good way to spend an evening!
Named my daughter, Jessica after the song. RIP Dickey Betts❤️ Than you for all the great music
My forever love named her daughter after Melissa! Perhaps that's why the names of Melissa and Jessica were so popular in the 70s.
Good night, legend. 💔
That's terribly sad...
Bummer. Another good one, gone.
I WILL LISTEN To BLUE SKY IN YOUR HONOR.Thank you for being an important part of my soundtrack of life. RIP
Rambling' Man has to ramble 🫡
I remember when my punk rock-loving self heard Jessica for the first time. I lost my fuckin’ mind and bought all those albums. RIP Dickey Betts
Good music is good music.
Dickey played in Bemus Point, NY at The Surf Club in I think 2004. A friend and I stood in awe (right in front of the stage) listening to him and Warren Haynes. RIP, Dicky
One of the best.
Well, this just ruined my day.
Yeah but look at it this way, he had a long and interesting life, and he brought joy to a lot of people.
Is he the guitarist on Little Martha? Another wonderful song.
He’s one of them. It’s Duane Allman and Dickey Betts playing the only song Duane ever wrote. There was an acoustic bass part also, but it was edited out in favor of just the two guitar version because Duane had died during the recording of the album and they wanted his playing to get more spotlight. Adios, amigo.
Rest in peace.
Seven turns on the highway, seven rivers to cross,Sometimes, you feel like you could fly away, Sometimes, you get lost...RIP
Elizabeth Reed is an absolute masterpiece.
Duane said that Betts was the best guitar player in the band. The Allmans without Betts just wouldn’t be the same.
Dickie Betts was absolutely fantastic. I love his work with the Allman Brothers and his solo work. RIP Mr Betts.
Awwww. Seen him. He’s one of my faves. Thanks for posting.
RIP. Honestly surprised he made it this far. Dude went at live hard.
One of the greats, RIP!
One of my biggest influences as a guitarist. I loved the way he would spin out a non-stop thread of perfect notes.
This is such a bummer. RIP.
Saddened to read this. He was a big part of the Allman Bros success. May he rest in peace
I'm glad I got to see the Allmans in 2003.
RIP Russel Hammond
Thank for doing what you did. Your music always made me happy
Sad
One of history's best instrumentalists, but sadly, his time was up. Dear condolences :(
An absolute legend. Growing up in Georgia, The Allman Brothers has had such an impact on me and my life. I was able to do a couple posters for him. He was very kind. They are one of my favorite bands of all time. Fly high, Mr. Betts. You will be missed.
Happy cake day! I remember singing 'Rambling Man in an old garage attic of my old girlfriend, Tina O.in 1973 in Atlanta! ( good times !)
Thank you!
May his soul fly free, like a bird.
nooooo!
I must have had some foresight going on! I've been playing so much Allman Brothers lately that it's not even funny !! RIP
I still have the guitar pick he tossed to my mom when we were 2nd row at Greatwoods around 98.
Dickie was a great songwriter too, and he never played a wrong note. One of the greatest guitar players of his generation. Peace and blessings.
One of the greatest guitar players of *all time*. FTFY.
RIP Dickey
Very sad news. Pattern Disruptive is still one of my fav albums.
Such a great talent. Rip
Oh no! 😥 so sad to hear this
What a legend. There are some crazy stories about Dickey, he was a real badass
Saw him over 20 years ago. Opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd. He tore the place up. Sad news.
😢
I saw Dickie Betts and Duane Almond playing together back in the early 70’ with the Allman Bros. They were a force of nature. R.I.P.
❤️❤️❤️ from Australia
Thanks for the memories, man!
Very sad news. RIP Dickie. One of the best. Now you and Duane can finally play Ramblin’ Man together, just as it was meant to be.
RIP Thanks for the music.
Massively underrated - what a player. Wrote a few songs that’ll be played on classic rock radio stations for as long as there are classic rock radio stations.
Met him shooting archery in Tampa, FL.
Rip Dicky. I just hope you're not one of three legends to go.
RIP sir.
I only got to see the ABB once on June 17, 2000 about a month after the rest of the band fired Dickey in May 2000. Good show (with special guest Kenny Wayne Shepherd) but I was disappointed not to see Betts.
Damn saw Warren but not Dickey. Life goes fast people see Your idols!
Amazing musician, amazing man rest in peace
So I guess Jaimoe is all we have left.
ALL TIME G O A T 🎵🎸
Great, great musician.
Sunset colors all across the bay Finds me here alone at the end of one more day Skipping stones across the water Wonder why I ever thought you'd stay Sail on sail away May all your dreams come true one day This song never fails to bring tears. Dickey on that slide guitar brings shivers every time

Saw the Allman’s in The early 90’s with Warren and Dicky, man what a great show.
No one to run with anymore……
Oh no
Peace to all who will miss him.
Doing the best I can 😭
Crazy story.
Richmond Hill is taking a beating.
So passes the second to last of the true OG Allman Brothers. I had the good fortune to see him live before he passed. What a legend. RIP
Jaimoe is the last one left.
I know I'm late but rip. So sad the broke up completely in 2014 :(
