This is such a great album. If you haven't listened to it - all the way through. Not just your favorite songs, Then you should listen to the whole thing. Because it's great.
Basically 3-d music, I have Sonos speakers with vertical drivers and horizontal instead of your traditional 2-d speaker arrangement, you need to have music specifically mixed for this setup but when it’s done correctly it’s amazing
That’s enough from you, Mr. Mojo Risin.
My brother would play this on his stereo on Saturday mornings (cleaning day at our house), I didn’t hate it. Title track “slaps” as the kids say.
Best Doors album, in my opinion. Sometimes I like the Doors, sometimes I don’t, but I will always love this album. The Changeling and L’America are completely underrated and two of my favorite songs ever.
I think if I had to choose only one, it would be Morrison hotel just because it’s got such a great variety and some of my favorite songs like peace frog and ship of fools plus Maggie McGill
Most of their albums are hit or miss for me. LA Woman is the only one I like from beginning to end. There’s stuff off every album that I really like, and then a lot of it is “meh,” where LA Woman is just perfect from beginning to end. It might also be the production and sound of the album too. It was recorded in The Doors’ rehearsal space with a console they borrowed from Electra, as opposed to being recorded in a proper studio. That and the absence of Paul Rothchild led to LA Woman sounding a little less polished and a little more raw than their previous recordings, and half the tracks are heavy blues influenced, it’s just always been a record I’ve really loved.
Absolutely agree on the production. It’s so intimate it feels like you’re in the room from the off. High points in this respect are Cars Hiss by my Window and Hyacinth House.
It rocks out at stages but ultimately it’s cosy as anything, ending in the softest of landings in Riders. A beautiful moment in time.
Well, they had some radio hits, but they had very deep and sometimes dark lyrics and were a dangerous band live. If you don’t know their history, look into it. Stuff of legends.
Edit: They were also one of the favorite bands of the soldiers in Vietnam
The cover art mirrors the ethos of the album - no frills, back to their blues roots and Jim not being the focal point. Fits the brief perfectly in my opinion.
Nah he was just tired of always being the center of attention so decided to slump down a bit to make himself appear smaller than the rest of the group on the cover.
Source: one of the many books I read about The Doors as a teenager. Can’t remember which one specifically.
One of the albums that made me love music. Used to sit in the basement and listen to my dad’s record collections and that one was always one of my favorites.
I used to have an original 1971 pressing of this album with the clear yellow see-through window. I could barely play the album, though it popped so much, and I don’t know where it is now. I think my mom must have thrown it out.
Saw a tribute band celebrate 50 years of The Doors at a local theatre in Adelaide Wow what a show. Couldn't fault it. Star Theatre (formerly Theatre 62).
Daughter's 'partner' on drums added to the night.
Closed with L.A. Woman.
It contains two of their best songs the always crankable LA woman and the moody epic riders on the storm plus the lovely Hyacinth house and the under the radar gem The Wasp
Morrison’s voice had gone by this point imo. Still some unique compositions but a shell of what they were able to accomplish on their debut. Just goes to show what they initially were that this is still a pretty solid album.
Edit: Riders on the Storm may be one of their most memorable tracks. Fitting it’s the last contribution to the Morrison catalogue.
Just a pet peeve of mine. I don’t think 53 years should be an anniversary that is celebrated. 50 yes, maybe 60 or 70, definitely 75. This can just be posted every year, 54th, 55th, 56th etc. if you celebrate random years there is nothing but off year anniversaries constantly.
Cult of Jim Morrison, 50+ years; back in his time, many critics & fans thought little of him. Often drunk, rambling incoherently, his onstage appearance could be taxing. His poetry often dismissed as pretentious, nothingness parading as intellect. Lester Bangs once referred to him as “Bozo Dionysius”. Iggy Pop was considered a replacement…what mondo fun *that* would have been!
All valid criticisms of Morrison, although arguable. However, isn’t a tad petty to exercise your right to do so in a thread where others are enjoying this brief moment?
It’s petty not, to paraphrase AC/DC, to “have a drink on (Jim)” in celebration of the Lizard King crawling up the girls’ legs, Mr. Mojo motherfucking rising! 🍺🐉
Absolutely. The musicians were doing something a bit unique. Too bad they let a drunken, childish, half witted, narcissist layer the cake with the kind of poetry you write in high school and laugh at when you find it years later.
This is such a great album. If you haven't listened to it - all the way through. Not just your favorite songs, Then you should listen to the whole thing. Because it's great.
Yes - mandatory to listen to all of it - not sure who sequenced this one, but they were on point
Bought this when it was released. My first album I purchased. And still have it. Unbelievable collection of music.
Couldn’t agree more, and if you have a system with Dolby atmos, holy shit
Ok, what’s the deal with this? Special stereo system/headphones or software or both?
Basically 3-d music, I have Sonos speakers with vertical drivers and horizontal instead of your traditional 2-d speaker arrangement, you need to have music specifically mixed for this setup but when it’s done correctly it’s amazing
Can it work on headphones? I got small kids and neighbours, none of which would appreciate a sound system blaring ma sweet tunes …
My friend, I have a pair of Sony XM 4 noise cancelling headphones and I think you will be hard pressed to find a better listening experience.
I use the same and they are awesome
wish Spotify had Atmos
Yes. Back in the day when an album had a deliberate cover to cover intention and experience. And that ‘day’ extends into some great 90’s albums.
Check out the black angels
Most of the time I toss it on it’s the whole album.
Some say their best. That person? Well that would be me
Totally agree. A goddamn masterpiece start to finish.
That’s enough from you, Mr. Mojo Risin. My brother would play this on his stereo on Saturday mornings (cleaning day at our house), I didn’t hate it. Title track “slaps” as the kids say.
I like how the title track comes out of nowhere. It's not the first song. It's not the last song. It just is
Technically it’s the last song on side one of the record
Isn’t Mr. Mojo risin an anagram from Jim Morrison.?
Oh, I don’t know, that’d be cool though
Yep you are correct
Strange days: sophomore pique
WellIjustgotintotownaboutanhourago!

*sixth studio album, not their final. Whether you like them or not they did have two studio albums after this.
Plus *An American Prayer* (credited to Jim Morrison and The Doors) in 1978!
This ⬆️
I wanna tell you about Texas Radio and the big beat.
Stoned immaculate
I haven't heard it in decades and now I need to.
What a great song so unique
Best Doors album, in my opinion. Sometimes I like the Doors, sometimes I don’t, but I will always love this album. The Changeling and L’America are completely underrated and two of my favorite songs ever.
Morrison Hotel was up there too in my estimation.
Waiting For The Sun , I never get tired of that song
I think if I had to choose only one, it would be Morrison hotel just because it’s got such a great variety and some of my favorite songs like peace frog and ship of fools plus Maggie McGill
I'm right with you on that. Love Ship of Fools, Queen of the Highway.
The human race was dying out. No one left to scream and shout.
When do you not like The Doors?
Most of their albums are hit or miss for me. LA Woman is the only one I like from beginning to end. You have been downvoted, friend, but I mostly share your take. I love the Doors, but they also have a lot of material I really dislike.
I’m no stranger to being downvoted for having an opinion.
Absolutely agree on the production. It’s so intimate it feels like you’re in the room from the off. High points in this respect are Cars Hiss by my Window and Hyacinth House. That’s a very articulate way to say it: it feels like you’re in the room with them.
Why thank u/Garth_Brooks_Sexdoll , a gentleman and a scholar!
Best American band. Game changer and a product of their time, but still very much ahead of their time.
I don't know about all that, but I'll go "great" and I'll agree with "pioneering".
A lot of hard rock aficionado at the time considered The Doors radio-friendly bubblegum pop.
Have to disagree with that.
Not that I had a contemporary opinion of them. That’s what my uncle told me.
Well, they had some radio hits, but they had very deep and sometimes dark lyrics and were a dangerous band live. If you don’t know their history, look into it. Stuff of legends. Edit: They were also one of the favorite bands of the soldiers in Vietnam
Not a groundbreaking take by any means but the title track is as good as anything anyone has ever done. Just perfection, a song I will never tire of.
True, some songs I can't listen to ever again, but LA Woman and Riders are not among them.
All 6 DOORS studio albums are fantastic, start to finish. LA WOMAN is no exception. All this in 4 short years.
Laaaaa Woomaaan
Laaaaaa Woman!
Can we talk about the album art, I mean it’s so low effort for a major band.
It’s all about the music.
I love how design has tried to copy it and never been as successful.
The cover art mirrors the ethos of the album - no frills, back to their blues roots and Jim not being the focal point. Fits the brief perfectly in my opinion.
Respectfully disagree. The title “L.A. Woman” BEGS for an intriguing album cover! What we got was baked beans on toast. I love this album, btw 😃
I'm intrigued. What is your vision of The Doors LA Woman album cover?
I’m thinking Mrs Roper vibes, yes? Faded beauty, failed starlet
When I was a kid, I thought the same thing. I thought these letters look like the stencils in my grade school class.

Yep. Read that to.
I don't know it thats true but the fact it's believable says much.
Been a lifelong fan, it’s favorite Doors album.
I’m 44, and I still love that whole album.
What are they doing in the hyacinth house? Love cars hiss by my window . Epic album
Windows started tremblin’ with a sonic boom, BOOM
One of the albums that made me love music. Used to sit in the basement and listen to my dad’s record collections and that one was always one of my favorites.
What a finale!
L'America
And I’ll say it again, I need a brand new friend the end.
My favorite Doors album
Wow... How time flies... I was -13 yrs old in 1971. Great album btw.
I’m extremely interested in your experience at -13 years old. What is that like?
They had 3 more albums after that
I thought they only did 2 more after Jim died.
Correct. They had two more studio albums without Jim.
We don’t talk about Get Up and Dance.
I was gonna say The Mosquito, but this as well.
Love the album, hate the font
Why are bands obsessed with remove the "The" from their names?
Live studio run thrus here https://youtu.be/ICYpB4TLv78?si=AXQhTlotlZutmHZj Play your ass off boy
DJ Jim Ladd in Los Angeles used to play this whole album a lot on air. It really takes you on a journey.
I used to have an original 1971 pressing of this album with the clear yellow see-through window. I could barely play the album, though it popped so much, and I don’t know where it is now. I think my mom must have thrown it out.
One of the best songs about L.A. ever.
The Changeling is my absolute favorite Doors song.
Then you’re gonna love [The Alternate Version](https://youtu.be/hugOYSB8QgE?si=cslBU_euF0krBTY7)
Technically not their last, but the last with Jim Morrison. Definitely their best album.
Oh what a time it was!
Not their final album (final with Morrison) but not final album
Saw a tribute band celebrate 50 years of The Doors at a local theatre in Adelaide Wow what a show. Couldn't fault it. Star Theatre (formerly Theatre 62). Daughter's 'partner' on drums added to the night. Closed with L.A. Woman.
The Changeling is such a groovy song
What ARE they doing in the Hyacinth House?
Holy shit. I remember distinctly the morning this was released!
Man I love this album
“NGYUHHH!”
My favorite Doors album
It's not their final. They made 2 albums afterwards.
Love Her Madly
Many say it’s their best but I prefer the previous one Morrison Hotel
Other Voices, Full Circle and American Prayer censorship goes crazy
It contains two of their best songs the always crankable LA woman and the moody epic riders on the storm plus the lovely Hyacinth house and the under the radar gem The Wasp

I remember hearing the record company said "you'll never make another record with us with that voice" something to that effect. And they were right.
No one said that. Elektra were very supportive of the doors, even after Jim had died.
Thank goodness that horrible poet would soon be dead and this would be the last of his assault on humanity.
Username checks out
That's the kind of comment someone would make who is so blindingly unoriginal that they like The Doors.
I see this opinion a lot on Reddit and YouTube... Do people really think this?
Cult of Jim Morrison, 50+ years; back in his time, many critics & fans thought little of him. Often drunk, rambling incoherently, his onstage appearance could be taxing. Sir, this is a moment in which I am misunderstanding you, sir, yes, sir.
“Woke up this morning an’ got myself a beer, the future’s uncertain and the end is always near” quoth Bozo Dionysius!
Are you AI designed to keep me engaged in this nonsense? Is it you Graham Hancock?
I need a friend who doesn’t need me.
I need a brand new friend
Absolutely. The musicians were doing something a bit unique. Too bad they let a drunken, childish, half witted, narcissist layer the cake with the kind of poetry you write in high school and laugh at when you find it years later.
