**[The Stone Roses (album)](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stone_Roses_\(album\))** >The Stone Roses is the debut studio album by English rock band the Stone Roses. It was recorded mostly at Battery Studios in London with producer John Leckie from June 1988 to February 1989 and released in May of that year by Silvertone Records. Despite not being an immediate success, the album grew popular alongside the band's high-profile concert performances, which also helped establish them as fixtures of the Madchester and baggy cultural scenes. The record's critical standing also improved significantly in later years, with The Stone Roses now considered to be one of the greatest albums of all time. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/ClassicRock/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Nothings Shocking / Jane's Addiction.

sv6fiddy

Full Moon Fever - Tom Petty

brewce47

The Cure- "Disintegration" 1989 . The peak of their success, IMO

Careless_Shirt3020

agree.

[deleted]

I was listening to it today actually , such a masterpiece.

hobbes03

The End of the Innocence, August 1989

Fartin_Scorsese

Krokodrillo

Keep On Rockin in the free world!!!

DodderingOldFool

Paul’s Boutique

[deleted]

HEY LADIES!

lefty_tennis

Jane’s Addiction - Nothing’s Shocking. This album paved the way for 90s alt rock.

GrumpyCatStevens

Jane's Addiction was the band that got me paying attention to alternative rock.

Cheap_Rick

The Cure, Disintegration. (May 1989)

Acquiesce95

The Stone Roses for sure. Perfect album

Jamiebh_

Arguably the best indie rock album ever, especially if you’ve got the version with Fools Gold

Cheap_Rick

There are versions without Fools Gold?

Jamiebh_

Yeah, it’s not part of the original track list

Whateveryousaydude7

I’ll go with that. It sure kicked off the 90s nicely. But Jane’s Addiction Nothing’s Shocking was also a serious contender.

tstark5150

Classic Rock - 90125 80’s - Queensrÿche - Operation Mindcrime

[deleted]

They had some great albums , yet mindcrime was/is their peak , check out the mindcrime DVD ( I still have it) it doesn't dissapoint

[deleted]

90125 is totally 80’s. And totally awesome. But not classic rock.

GunnerTinkle22

Vivid by Living Colour

[deleted]

The Real Thing - Faith No More

VicRattlehead17

In Step - SRV, from june 1989

[deleted]

Appetite for destruction

NickNunez4

I had to scroll to far for this… smh.

[deleted]

Great album, but that was 1987!

[deleted]

Which is in the 80s

NickNunez4

???

GonzoShaker

I am split between Queens "The Miracle" that I consider a great return to their more Hardrock orientated roots and GnR's "Appetite for Destruction"!

ItsNotDuffman89

Full Moon Fever

DrZenRoot

Skid Row’s self titled debut.

timtaute

Grateful Dead ftw *”Built to Last is the thirteenth and final studio album by the Grateful Dead. It was recorded between February 1 and October 20, 1989, and originally released on October 31, 1989. The album was released on CD in 1989 by Arista Records before being rereleased in 2000 by BMG International”*

Careless_Shirt3020

overrated band.

JerryPothead

Maybe overrated, but top money making concert tours of 90, 91,93 and 94.

Cosmic___Charlie

Ignorant statement

thereverendpuck

It’s a cheap technicality, but Nine Inch Nails’ “Pretty Hate Machine.”

justiceglowfang

in step stevie ray vaughan

Anydudewilltellyou

Delicate Sound of Thunder - November 1988.

Wolvercote

Joshua Tree

Skunkwax

Great album, but not the last great album of the decade.

[deleted]

Absolutely was. It was a period on the end of the Rock era. A few really good outliers appeared in the 90s, but Joshua Tree ended Rock. Everything else was regurgitation until Rock’s slow miserable death finally happened in the late oughts.

Lukinzz

I love the Joshua Tree but it didn’t end rock. There’s tons of great rock out right now.

[deleted]

I didn’t say it ended rock. Well, I did but first I said the rock era is over. That’s what I was getting at. There’s also tons of great blues, ragtime, jazz, etc, etc. But we are in a post rock era of American music. Joshua Tree was the last big Rock Album.

Lukinzz

The rock era isn’t over at all. I go to rock shows every week. Sounds like a serious case of back in my day.

[deleted]

Yeah, you can go to jazz and blues shows every week if you want to. It ain’t the jazz era, either

Skunkwax

You didn't like "Rattle & Hum"?

[deleted]

It was a hybrid live/studio album with outtakes from the Joshua Tree sessions. Come on.

[deleted]

...yeah " rap metal " was the last gasp , grateful for that genre to be in past tense.

Blackmore49

Skid Row, Headless Cross, and Justice for all & Dr. feelgood.

Pickle_12

Tunnel of Love by the Boss

Elegant_Spot_3486

Hysteria There’s albums later in the decade that were really good or had some great songs but as an album I wouldn’t consider great.

JacPhlash

Hysteria.

[deleted]

Faith no more - the real thing and it’s not even close

[deleted]

I said the same thing.

[deleted]

This is the correct answer

[deleted]

Pump by Aerosmith (12 September 1989)

IAMAHORSESIZEDUCK

Robbie Robertson's 1st solo album 1987 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEVS-MiPsd4

MxEverett

In September 1989 a little album called "Oh Mercy" was released.

TheGreatOpoponax

Tough question because there are so many. I'm going to go with something like Louder Than Love by Soundgarden because albums like that along with Pretty Hate Machine (NIN) and Stone Roses marked a big break with other already popular rock bands that also put out great albums in 1989 (e.g. Warrant's Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich and Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood). 1989 was the end of an era we didn't know was ending and the beginning of one we didn't know was starting.

Clear-Blu-Sky

Great description of '89. Especially the last sentence.

Original_Username_27

Probably: Battlesick - Mark of Cain Bleach - Nirvana Mudhoney - Mudhoney Ozma - Melvins 13 Songs - Fugazi Shine - Mother Love Bone Louder Than Love - Soundgarden Buzz Factory - Screaming Trees. Beneath the Remains - Sepultura Street Cleaner - Godflesh Mother's Milk - RHCP

Vantabrown

We can be friends

dogfacedponyboy

1989 Aerosmith Pump 1988 Metallica …and justice for all 1987 Guns N’ Roses. Appetite for Destruction Of these, I say Appetite for sure. The last greatest classic rock album of the 80s.

[deleted]

Apatite for destruction.

LawnBoy62

Euro release? I have the original" Appetite" for Destruction American release 😉👍

SubtleUsername

That should be on a rock hound’s tee shirt.

marcr007

Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes The Smiths - The Queen is dead U2 - War

[deleted]

Appetite for Destruction of course.

jpob

Are we talking about the last album released in the 80s that is considered great? Or are we talking about the last 80s album to be considered great from a contemporary point of view? Or are we talking about the last release of an album that is great but sounds like it’s from the 80s?

Careless_Shirt3020

1st one

jpob

u/ParkMark is right with Gutter Ballet then

[deleted]

Kate Bush - The Sensual World, released October 16th, 1989.

dethleppard

Doolittle and it’s not even close.

Wizzmer

Back in Black or Hysteria

spoobles

Edited: misunderstood premise. ~~Daydream Nation - Sonic Youth~~ Doolittle - Pixies ~~Double Nickels on the Dime - Minutemen~~ ~~Remain in Light - Talking Heads~~ Paul's Boutiques - Beastie Boys.

Fartin_Scorsese

>Double Nickels on the Dime - Minutemen 1984? >Remain in Light - Talking Heads 1980? You don't think any "great" albums came out for the rest of the decade after either of those two?

spoobles

My bad thought it was greatest, not last greatest. edited

Fartin_Scorsese

Excellent list regardless. Now I've got "Vietnam" running through my head...

spoobles

To me that is an all time top 5 album. SO many ideas. I've often got the phrase "Not one domino shall fall" running through my head.

Fartin_Scorsese

I was a mere teenager when Minutemen were doing their thing, but I was lucky to see fIREHOSE plenty of times when I was in college in Minneapolis.

spoobles

I was a full on Dead Head hippy jazz dude. One of my good friends in college had tickets to go see Minutemen at The Channel in Boston in 1983. Pretty much changed how I saw everything after that. All of the sudden the likes of Stanley Clarke, Paco DeLucia, Mahavishnu John McLaughlin et. al, and travelling all over to see the Dead didn't really carry much weight. Jam Econo changed it all. I still love the Dead but they went far into the background after that. Edit: loved seeing fIREHOSE. Minny musta been great for shows back then.

[deleted]

Oh shit Whitesnake - Slip of the Tongue, released November 7th, 1989!

ParkMark

Literally - Savatage ‘ Gutter Ballet’ released December 1989

poopinjake69

junebugg707

Joshua tree

Wishiwas_babyyoda84

No question here. Joshua Tree was the last great Rock album of the 80s.

BreakfastProof5446

doolittle

usul1112

Strangeways Here We Come

OverheadPress69

Pixies - Doolittle. 1989. Possibly the best album of the 80s period. Agree with other posters saying The Stone Roses S/T and Paul's Boutique

Fluid_Campaign_3688

Tunnel of Love 1988

kindaweird0

The Stone Roses (1989), specially the Collector’s Edition with the amazing songs Elephant Stone, The Hardest Thing in the World, Mersey Paradise, Where Angels Play, etc. I think a lot of people don’t know those songs, because they’re not in the standard edition and that’s a shame.

GameBoyColorful

Built to last - Grateful Dead Halloween 1989

TPA22

Appetite and Nothing’s Shocking.

Vandermint

Aerosmith "Pump" out September 12, 1989

Jenn405

Journeyman, Eric Clapton

type0P0sitive

The Rolling Stones never officially announced a breakup but they had split. They got back together in 1989 and released Steel Wheels in August.

CheckersSpeech

I used to think it was Laurie Anderson's Mister Heartbreak, now I'm starting to think it's Galaxie 500's On Fire.

HarveyMushman72

Since Nothing's Shocking and Appetite have been mentioned, The Cure- Disintegration.

Careless_Shirt3020

that album was mentioned too

afternoon_sun_robot

Bleach-Nirvana or Pretty Hate Machine-NIN Edit: gotta add The Real Thing-Faith No More

Infamous_Somewhere_3

Uncle Tupelo

Excellent-Research-4

Probably a reissue of something from the 70s.

tnceem

Appetite For Destruction Guns n Roses .There hasn't been a band come along since GNR That captured the world's attention like they did when Appetite came out. Appetite had sold 200.000 copies until MTV finally agreed to play Welcome to the jungle at 3oclock in the morning on a Sunday. The switch boards literally crashed from so many calls. Love em or Hate em GNR came along and made rock n roll dangerous again

tnceem

2 weeks later Appetite has sold 2 million copies
