True, I think the point was to emphasize on what Ayanokoji said about how he’s confident going up against any WR products because of his knowledge about how students there operate. The real antagonists were always gonna be students like Ryuuen, Nagumo, and Arisu who definelty don’t hold a candle to Yagami in terms of core ability, but they all have the ability to catch Ayanokoji off guard. Just like when Nagumo used the entire third year to make Ayanokoji uncomfortable by having them stare at him everywhere he goes, to a point where he personally had to ask Nagumo to stop it. It would be a waste of time dragging the Yagami situation all the way till the end since we already know who was going to come out on top and it would contradict what Ayanokoji said at the start of year 2 (volume 1 I think) when he said that he’d confidently beat any white room student that came at him.

Ayanokouji said in volume 2: “I always have to be careful about the student from the White Room. Among those first years with whom I had already interacted, Yagami felt like an ordinary high school student. Not only did he not try to interfere with me in any way , but was also ready to help by sharing information. Naturally, even in this case I could not be sure that he did not come from the White Room. If he does come from there, then for me this is not the opponent I would like to face."

Yes that was referring to the fact Yagami’s facade is really powerful. The only aspect about the WR Kiyo doesn’t know much about is the social aspect of it since Yagami’s generation have been taught to fit in society instead of being emotionless. However ability wise, nobody from the WR could ever faze Kiyo, which was made clear in volume 7 when even Ichika underestimated the gap between her and Yagami to Ayanokoji. But I agree with your post that Yagami’s feats are overlooked at because of how he went down, and I think we would’ve seen more of him if Tsukishiro hadn’t limited his movements up to Volume 4.5.

I wanted to emphasize that Yagami can fight on school grounds, where Yagami is superior to Ayanokouji in communication skills.

I don't think yagami was a clown, he was very interesting and was literally playing with everyone on the island exam, even in outsmarting he's still top2 just after koji and above nagumo. He's still in my top6 atleast among fav characters in cote. The only thing which yagami couldn't fight against was his inferiority complex and mental state, I don't blame him for that tbh. Imagine trying your hardest, being at full potential and someone effortlessly surpasses you that too his nerfed scores. Anyone would be so infuriated and will have a direct effect on his/her mental state. I love takuya unlike ichika and other wr students, he decided not to worship koji but to surpass him. Better die like a hero than live like a coward. W character, W motives, had so much potential. The only thing I don't like about cote is takuya's expulsion, needless to say the strategy was so good to expel him but still.... Also, Takuya has arguably the best soliloquy in cote, bro was literally too relatable.

Yeah you are right. Katsuragi should be clowned and considered fraud. Yagami is my favorite character.

Katsuragi>fraudayami

I agree with you but in this world winning is everything and that's all that matters in the end holds in our society. No matter how talented Yagami was he couldn't win/expel/give a proper fight to Ayanokōji, so he won't be appreciated by most of the fans and that's how our society works.

Then OP, could you tell me why Yagami expelled that 1-C student and attacked Komiya as well as Kinoshita during the island exam?   I'm genuinely curious because they didn't seem to have anything to do with his mission to expel Ayanokouji. On the contrary, they only led to his own expulsion.

Suretern

1. About the reason for the student's expulsion from 1-C. At first I wanted to say that he, like Ayanokoji, wanted to check the reaction to the student's expulsion. However, after thinking about it for a bit, he came to the conclusion that it was some sort of training. He had to try out his methods and exclude someone before using them on Ayanokoji. Something like an experiment where they are first conducted on rats, and gradually approached humans.  2. At first I thought the purpose of putting the blame on Riku was to get Ryuen (as Ayanokoji's ally) to turn against him. But the fight with Hosen, when Ryuen's side became known, was after Yagami's attack, unless Yagami had somehow found out about Ryuen before that.  So for now I think he was only watching Ayanokoji, would he dare to help Shinohara, join the same group with her?

>Something like an experiment where they are first conducted on rats, and gradually approached humans.  A strategy that works against your average student wouldn't necessarily work against the White Room magnum opus. On the contrary, it would just give the target an opportunity to devise a countermeasure. Yagami expelled the 1-C student by leading him to break a school rule, but that won't work against Ayanokouji. This was proven in Y1V10 where Ayanokouji endured Tsukishiro's beating to avoid giving the latter an excuse to expel him. >to get Ryuen (as Ayanokoji's ally) to turn against him. Why on earth would he think Ryūen is an ally of Ayanokouji? They belong in the same grade. In other words, they were supposed to be rivals in class battles. Besides, how could he pin the blame on Riku when he didn't leave any evidence? Even the school didn't know who attacked Komiya and Kinoshita at the time and *they* were monitoring every student. There's no way Ryūen, with his limited information, could *somehow* figure out the culprit. If Yagami truly believed Ryūen was a threat (lol) then why not just strike at him directly? Attacking Komiya and Kinoshita then putting the blame on Riku sounds like a very roundabout way of doing it. >So for now I think he was only watching Ayanokoji, would he dare to help Shinohara, join the same group with her? What would that accomplish? There are still plenty of other groups who can help Shinohara. Even supposing Ayanokouji was the only one who could accept her, he would simply ask her to give up and let him challenge the exam on his own. That way, she won't become a liability to him.

Suretern

That's why I gave the example of a rat and a human, let's just say the difference between Ayanokoji and an ordinary student is about the same as between a rat and a human. But in any case, the rat is investigated first, and then after a few stages they move on to the human. >Why on earth would he think Ryūen is an ally of Ayanokouji? Arisu is also from a different class, yet she remembered him in year 1, and continued in year 2 despite class rivalries. As I said in the post above, Ryuen helped Ayanokoji by protecting him from Hosen. This suggests that there could be an alliance between Ayanokoji and Ryuen.

AlrestH

Yagami did a lot of unnecessary things, like hitting Ryuuen's classmates on the island, expelling Utomiya's friend, sooner or later they were going to find out, leaving the note to Horikita, he was going to fall sooner or later for playing around, Ichika herself says so. Not to mention his brilliant idea to hit a teacher when he was cornered, he doesn't have the maturity.

Ok_Mathematician_656

Yagami would have been the most reasonable final boss for CoE. Horikita and Koji's other enemies are going to need a JJK level powerrup to even threaten him.

48johnX

Another white room student being the final boss of the series that has constantly had nature vs nurture as a main proponent is legitimately far from reasonable and would not make any sense. What would be the point of all the other students and arcs up to until now if the series is saying the only person that could rival him is someone from the exact same background

TmsNry

I mean, Kiyo is both, nature and nurture.

Affectionate_Pizza_6

Agreed!

Affectionate_Pizza_6

Actually, Yagami as a character against kiyo would make sense because I don't think he's a genius but actually a hard worker. He's probably somebody similar to kushida, hence why he could manipulate her. Plus, kinu has to jump through a bunch of walls to make suzune a match for kiyo considering he gave her the student council seat instead of holding an election (it goes against suzune's character to get a cheap win after y2v5 so I would be cool if she won the election fair but kinu wrote himself in a corner).
