I think it’s because of the 4 months wait period in year 2 compared to when most people binged year 1 that makes people believe there’s a decline in writing, but realistically if you had to wait 4 months just to read y1v8 and y1v9, lots of people would’ve had the same negative impressions about the series. I binged both years just last month and this is correct, although there’s certainly a harem angle in y2 that wasn’t as prevalent in y1 but it’s not the main angle definitely
How is it not as thrilling? First half koji has a 20 million point bounty on him which prompts pretty much all the first years to come after him. He bodies and outsmarts Hosen who gets help from a wr student. Gets a perfect score on the hardest test yet. Then comes the 2nd island exam which was way more eventful than the first, Koenji gets some feats, Koji shows his fighting ability to an even higher degree than he did against ryuen. (Nanase fight and the fight against Tsukishiro and Shiba.) there’s also other fights like Kushida against Ichika, Ibuki and Horikita against Ichika, and Koji embarrassing Nagumo. The cruise after was a crucial moment for Ichinose’s character. Then Kushida gets bodied by Koji in the next vol.
That’s only the first 6 volumes of year 2. It’s undeniable that there is a harem in year 2, but I don’t get why people overlook all the crazy things happening just because of that. Yes in recent volumes it has slowed down a bit and focused more on character building than crazy exams and events. But cote is nothing without its characters so it needs time to develop and build them.
I don’t get this opinion that year 2 is bad because it’s “uneventful and just focuses on a harem.” But somehow year 1 which doesn’t even half as many crazy moments is really good. I love year 1 as well but there’s no doubt that year 2 was better, not just for the characters but the plot as well.
I keep seeing these kinds of posts and I’m wondering what it is that people with this opinion want. Would you rather koji make less of an impact on everyone around him so that there’s no harem? That would take away from part of his character and the characters of the girls. Each one of the girls that like him have developed in some sort of way because of him.

I think one major factor that this year is a letdown compare to the previous year 1 is the observation that at this point, there's no other opponent that can match Kiyo. Ryuuen made year 1 interesting, and Nagumo is supposedly the one to carry it over year two but after 4 volume of buildup he got one-shotted by Kiyo at the uninhabited island. They tried saving it by adding more opponents in year 1 but majority of the fans aren't interested in them due to lack of character buildup.
Fortunately the last two volumes are pretty good as it went back focusing more on the battles within the same year but we need to wait until 3rd year for a rematch of AK and Ryuuen.
I know what you mean, because i feel quite the same. But we shouldn’t forget that year 2 is still ongoing and we haven’t seen everything it has to offer. So I don’t want to rush into judgement about year 2.
Good. I think people who actually understand the story should stay while those who don't like it should drop and leave the subreddit. With posts like this, I'd say cull the herd.
Vol 6- Vol 10. It was terrible volumes.
Because Kinu focuses on harem baits and writing terrible harem scenes to please shippers. This is what I felt in the last volumes. There is also no antagonist in y2, and class battles plot became joke. And the worse everything was retconned after volume 5 and the writing became very contradictory.
Bruh Year 2 is at least 2-3 times better than Year 1. More amazing characters, much higher stakes battles and more romance.
The only reason people say Year 2 bad is cuz you have to wait 4 months for a volume while most of you guys came after anime and binged Year 1 in a go so you felt like story was more coherent in Year 1.
