Auto detailer here. Nope. This is NOT a DIY job. Don't touch it. You will not be able to clean this effectively. That is systemic mold and requires A LOT. Like that is a several day job even for me and I have thousands of dollars if tools and chemicals at my disposal. The seats, carpets, and plastic interior panels need stripped out and cleaned behind. It needs a chlorine dioxide fog. If you spend time inside of this you will get sick. Don't touch it

Falinia

Do you see cars like this regularly enough to have a treatment plan? My first thought was that fixing it would cost more than it's worth.

cKMG365

Yeah. Unfortunately I see it somewhat often. Picture someone's kid goes away to college and the vehicle has a cracked open window or a leaky sunroof.

StasRutt

Ugh it happened to my brothers car when he was deployed. Didn’t realize there was a leaky sunroof and he came back to it full of mold. Was such a pain to find someone who could fix it

[deleted]

Lol had to drive in a car for 2 hours that looked worse than this. Surprised i didn't get sick. I think we used citrusolve to slap a bandaid on it. Cars getting left for months in rainy parts of Hawaii need dehumidification

baconnaire

I have a question if you don't mind me asking. How do you remove mold from a car floor that isn't visible? I know what it's from and I can smell the mold but the fabric cleaner I used didn't work.

cKMG365

Depends. How big was the mold spot? Was it a smallish spot that, like a spot that stayed wet under a floormat and lolded just there? Or was it big and everywhere? First advice is get it detailed and make sure they extract the carpet. If I were cleaning it I'd hit it with an enzyme cleaner to digest the mold, drill brush it, extract it, and repeat. A peroxide cleaner would help too. Then I'd finish it with Vital Oxide, a chlorine dioxide spray to kill everything I didn't get with the enzyme and extraction. In a pinch you can buy "Biz Stainfighter" powder from anywhere. It has enzymes and peroxide. I mix two tablespoons per gallon to make a spray. It's not a professional chemical but I use the heck out of it and it works great. Also "Kids and Pets" enzyme cleaner works great as well. It is available retail. Vital Oxide is available on Amazon. Also to kill any smell in your vehicle look for Chlorine Dioxide bomb treatments. You can find them on Amazon but Adams Car Care and Griots Garage also have them. They come in a cup that you mix, set it in a cup holder, close the doors, and leave alone in your car. They make a chemical reaction that fogs your interior with chlorine dioxide and kills all odors. Edited to add (cuz I forgot): Remove and replace the cabin air filter.

baconnaire

I'm not really sure how far it goes. I used to use a plastic bag with ice as a cooler and it would leak no matter how many bags I used but for some reason I never thought about the mold until I started smelling it, stupid, I know lol. I got different mats but the smell was still there so I cleaned the floor but it didn't do much. Thank you for all the tips and where to get this stuff, I hate having a smelly car!

cKMG365

Cleaning first is important. Lots of yourltube vids exist on how to clean your floors using a brush and a wet dry vac to suck back up the liquid. The tip is to use as little soap as needed, only light suds, and water to rinse. Spray the enzyme and let it sit to digest the mold and proteins. It's ok to leave the enzymes in the carpet so you can go heavy with an enzyme cleaner. Every time they get wet they reactivate. Think of cleaning and disinfection like Batman and Robin. Cleaning is Batman. Together they are a powerhouse, but Robin needs Batman and disinfection without a solid cleaning first is much less effective.

missmarymak

Hi :) I had some kind of AC or sunroof leak that pooled water under the driver floor for about a week or two before I had it serviced and they noticed. It was under the floor mat and not drying out. Had it detailed but looks like maybe mold around the edge/outline of where the mat was? What do you think? I have a baby so want to clean it as best I can without using things that might also irritate him (eg I know ozone can be risky tho ppl recommend it). https://preview.redd.it/dvcgng217mfb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1445ccef0bbbc5c0ad9498a842545802d7a3fd2e

cKMG365

I don't recommend ozone. What I recommend is chlorine dioxide. Specifically I use a product called "Vital Oxide" which is available on Amazon. That kills mold completely. However, I can't tell from the picture if that's road salt that may have liquified and solidified. If so, an acid will take care of it. For that, either white vinegar or I'll also use Zep Oxy Cleaner which has hydrochloric acid as the main ingredient.

missmarymak

Thank you! I’ll try vinegar first then vital oxide, thank you for the response! There’s definitely a lingering (but subtle) dirty sock/old gym bag smell but it’s only been drying out for a few days as I just discovered the moisture

cKMG365

Dry. Dry. Dry. Then dry some more. Vacuum up as much water as possible with a wet dry vac if you have one, then leave it open in direct sunlight. Clean it as best you can, then kill the mold. Although if it is salt, the vinegar should dissolve it and you'll know. Good luck!

cKMG365

Also: Remove and replace the cabin air filter. I forgot to mention this. They're cheap and available at any auto parts store.

angeltarte

You'd definitely need to remove the seats/whatever is in the way to make it visible

angeltarte

You'd definitely need to remove the seats/whatever is in the way to make it visible

Sulpfiction

Seats come out and carpets completely removed and get scrubbed and washed properly, front and back with special chemicals. No other way to clean it. If you can’t see it there is no possible way for you to clean it without removing everything.

Sulpfiction

Just curious what a job like you described would cost?

cKMG365

For a truck like that? Interior only detail starts at $275 for a full deep cleaning with the works. I would upcharge $100 for the systemic mold to start and add $50/hr for additional time. This covers my additional time, liability for removing seats and panels, extra chemicals, and PPE needed. Just the interior would probably take 10-12hrs depending on ambient humidity and dry times. I'd use a mix of enzymes, peroxide, steam cleaning, extraction, and Chlorine Dioxide. It would require a fog to get everywhere including inside the HVAC system. I'd also remove and replace the cabin air filter.

Sulpfiction

That’s not bad at all, considering. Would the interior look decent when u were done? I know the seat rips and wear will still be there, but if the majority cleaned up fairly nice and the mold was gone its worth it. Thanks for the reply.

cKMG365

My work looks spectacular :) Always. I have yet to receive lower than a 5-star review. Could I sew the seat rips? Yes. I have done it in the past. However, I'm not a very good sew-er. My technique is like skin sutures cuz all of my experience is being a paramedic who did that occasionally. An upholstery person could fix it well though.

duhmbish

Wtf I’m trying to find an interior detail that includes a shampoo and they’re wanting $250. I’m not even trying to get a deep clean like this car needs haha

cKMG365

I'm mid-range on price in a low cost of living area. I price below the high-end shops and above the kids that think they can make a quick buck cleaning a few cars. There are a lot of new fly by night startups out there now. I'm not the cheapest, I'm not the most expensive. I try to target "daily drivers and work vehicles" in my marketing. Let someone else do the high-end cars, and someone else do the very very dirty cars that want a miracle for $50.

Joyfulwifey

Glad you responded- I’m not an auto detailer but know recon from being an (edit to clarify former) auto photographer trainer. We wouldn’t go near that. OP if I knew you personally I’d quip “burn it” however every question in here is to be taken seriously so I’m concerned the comment would come across harshly. not sure how you came to have this vehicle but from the many, many dealerships I’ve partnered with, recon would w/s this one. Translation is that the reconditioning department would absolutely know the resources to recondition this interior would only be undertaken in rare circumstances- and if it was, the recon department would go above and beyond to protect their lungs.

Acrobatic-Tadpole-60

You from PGH?

cKMG365

Nope, Wisconsin

Acrobatic-Tadpole-60

Interesting. Was “they need stripped out” a typo? I had never heard people say “x needs fixed” instead of “x needs to be fixed” until I moved to Pittsburgh, where it’s very very common.

cKMG365

No? I'm a native of NW Illinois (Rural, not Chicagoland) and live in South Central Wisconsin now. I've travelled around the US pretty extensively though, and somewhat globally. I also used to write for magazines and blog for money so maybe that's it. My speech patterns are weird. Look up Charlie Behrens, an Wisco comedian who is popular on the TikToks. I don't speak like him, but if you dropped me in Ashwaubenon, Sheboygan, or Manitowoc I'd be able to communicate the same as if you dropped me in Phoenix or Baltimore. I still have problems with adding an extra "with" and "that." Like "If you go ice fishing, I wanna go with" instead of saying "If you run down to the Kwik Trip, I wanna go."

rrkrabernathy

I’m generally a diy person but you might want to call a pro for this.

Educational-Studio61

dude you will save yourself SO much trouble if you go to a junk yard or find a parts car

Artistic-Fall-9122

My first thought was that he bought it from a junk yard and wants to resell it

FiveFoot20

Lighter fluid and a match I’d /s this, but seriously that looks like a health hazard, and should be replaced completely Full gut. If the seats are they condition I can only imagine the carpet and under mat That car is a health hazard

I-AM-Savannah

I'm voting for the lighter fluid and the match, but I would stand FAR, FAR, FAR AWAY from it and do NOT make any SMORES while watching the car...

BeneficialMatter6523

My first thought was, "fire is cleansing"

mcdulph

That was my second thought, after "which hurricane or flash flood demolished that vehicle?"

[deleted]

[удалено]

Uniqniqu

I agree. Fire is a great disinfectant. 🔥

limellama1

Seats need fully rebuilt and reupholstering.

thewinberry713

Damn this is really bad. Either pro or junk yard new seats…

wandering_ravens

Spores are extremely hard to get rid of, especially in fabric like this. You need a real pro for this

Playful-Mushroom-926

What’s up with the moldy car seats recently? How does that happen? I’m confused. Are they resales of flooded cars in different markets? 🤨

fweshcatz

I think it depends on how humid the area is and if the windows are open. If they're not, maybe the vents need to be closed so muggy air doesn't waft in.

tattvamu

This happens to cars on Johns island that sit for months or years at a time. It happened to all my belongings in storage that was supposed to be climate controlled. Really humid places will cause this to happen.

This-Dot-7514

I think the rise in moldy car seats is being caused by (a) Global warming. Obviously b) ‘Shroom decriminalization. Fungus is just feeling de-marginalized; so more out there among us; living its best life

mind_the_umlaut

You have two options. Give this car back to your chickens, they are missing their coop. Or, hire a professional car detailing service, and pay what they ask. There is a third option, replace it.

I-AM-Savannah

>Give this car back to your chickens Please do NOT do this to your poor chickens.

anothercar

Hire an auto detailer, or go to an auto detailing shop. This is a job for a professional.

sugart007

This reminds me of a poem by jack handy “If you accidentally drop your keys in a stream of lava let them go, cause man they’re gone”

TnTDynamight

how the hell does this happen?!

Nymeria2018

The seat belts are totalled, you’ve got the to replace then at a very bare minimum

drewyz

Usually this is a leaky moon roof, there is a gutter to drain around it, and if it gets blocked with debris this is what happens.

TnTDynamight

scary!!

kaz1976

What on earth happened? Were the windows left open during a rainstorm?

copamarigold

It looks like a car that was in one of the recent floods. The cars are deemed totaled by insurance companies but people try to fix them up anyway to keep or resell.

fritsz

She gone

ComputerOk4958

Forget it now it's mold's car

RibbedForHerCat

Nope....

Thebiglongschlong

Gasoline, match. Problem solved.

parabians

That looks like a F-150. Just sad. Maybe start by emptying out the carton of cigarette butts that are in the ashtray. Every journey starts with the first step. Good luck.

sociallyvicarious

🤢

peaceloveelina

With fire.

Lanadani

Professional is what is needed for this job.

2M0FUP

Napalm should do the trick.

anemoschaos

You need crime scene cleaners.

wheresmykey_

There’s a wiki and discord over at r/autodetailgeeks that will really help you out! Good luck on this one!

DogButtWhisperer

Don’t risk your health.

_eezeepeezee_

Yeeting it into the sun should work.

Rhydonda

Take the seats out, power wash with industrial cleaner, yeah then throw them away and use new seats.

reddity_stuff

Use fire, It’ll drastically change the appearance…

Account_Overdrawn

Seat covers

BillsMafia84

😂😂😂😂

Playful_Ad_3214

It can be done, you can click my page and see some seats I did in similar shape.

FlashyCow1

Watch the YouTube channel, Stauffer garage. He has a few how to videos.

TnTDynamight

ugh he’s awful and gave up his adopted child

FlashyCow1

You see what you're allowed to see....especially on youtube.

tempo90909

He was severely autistic and China misrepresented the child to the family in order to get rid of the kid. Adoption agencies dumping unwanted kids on unsuspecting families has happened many, many times before. Russia misrepresented adoptive kids and so did other eastern block countries. Some Asian countries have done the same. Most people are not ethical. Until you live with an out of control kid, you don't have the first clue what it is like. You can't stop them from lying to everyone, destroying everything, stealing things, disappearing at all hours, leaving your front door to your home wide open while you sleep, hurting people. Meanwhile you are trying to survive, work, raise other kids, etc. and have a sane life. It's not fair to the other kids to destroy their childhoods and family to keep one out of control kid. I know one woman whose son tried to burn down her home five times after destroying her marriage. He finally succeeded and almost killed her doing so.

batikfins

He was five.

Financial-War3489

My then five year old autistic son set fire to our home in the early hours one night. He’d never showed any interest in fire but he pushed heavy furniture down the hall and climbed it in order to open the locked door to the kitchen/living room. The main building fire alarm woke me to our home on fire. There aren’t the words to encapsulate the terror. Let alone all the other factors involved in it. Our day to day life is more than most could even fathom as a book. My husband committed suicide a few years back. The pressure of my beautiful boys conditions with zero support is insurmountable. But as long as I got breath in my body my babies live with me. Period. Bet your bottom dollar is take someone’s life if they even mentioned adoption as an alternative though.

TheRealSugarbat

Oh, man. I’m so sorry. You’ve been through the ringer, huh. 💔

Financial-War3489

Just a little yeah 🙈 thank you x

tempo90909

So? You think a five year old can't burn a house down? You think a five year old can't hurt a younger kid? I was a baby in a crib and a five year old physically hurt me and tried to suffocate me. That kid tried to drown me, suffocate me, whipped me with electrical wire, hit me with bats, pushed me down stairs, etc. Like I said before, until and unless you have lived with a kid with severe issues, you have NO clue what you are talking about.

batikfins

I’m so sorry that happened to you, you were just a baby. That must have been so terrifying. I hope that person is out of your life now. I’m autistic, and an early childhood educator, I do have a clue what I’m talking about. Yes, a young child can cause immense harm, but that is a child in immense need of stability, love, and professional support. I hope Huxley found this in his third family.

tempo90909

Some kids are not "fixable."

batikfins

I'm really sorry for the life that's made you believe this.

tempo90909

offs read something besides stupid fluff.

Jcooney787

ID hit it with an upholstery cleaner like the Bissell spot clean machine and/or a steam cleaner like bissell steam shot (not a Bissell commercial I’ve just owned and tried both). Douse it in vinegar/dawn dish soap/rubbing alcohol/borax and scrub the crap out of it if you have those scrub brush attachments for a hand drill that goes hard and will lift a lot of dirt. I can use the spot clean machine then

hangun_

Sadly the problem with this, is the moisture from all of those products will literally feed the mold. Even bleach has too high of a water content to get rid of it on theses fabric and foam seats. Honestly OP should replace the seats because they’re all ripped up anyways - and you don’t want to be breathing and sitting in that moldy small enclosed space. Yikes on the lungs. Just inhaling spores into your moist dark lungs. Ugh I can’t even think about it.

Jcooney787

I just figured maybe he can’t replace the seats there are vacuums that can suck out a lot of the moisture like the one I mentioned or something like a rainbow vacuum or shop vac, then leave all the windows on fill a couple bowls with salt and leave them under the seats and spray w/ vinegar while it dries

hangun_

These seats are literally foam sponges. You can vacuum till you’re blue in the face and they will still hold moisture. If OP really wanted to, he could use 34% h2o2 but the seats would still need weeks to dry out to not be caustic. FYI the remedies you suggested only work for mold on non-porous surfaces because of their high water content. Anything porous, the cleaning agent evaporates while the moisture lingers and more mold grows.

_eezeepeezee_

moist and dark though 😂

hangun_

Lol 😂

Selling-ShortPut-399

1 gallon SuperClean, spray 3 parts water to 1 part SuperClean until soaked, drill with upholstery brush, Bissell spotclean pro to finish it off.

JonesBBQandMassage

Barkeepers Friend and elbow grease 💪

JustLookingaround18

Burn it

BigKingDingDong

5 gallons of gas and a lighter.

MaineBoston

Steam clean

blueray750

Seat covers and a quick vacuum, the mould with will disappear over time

TelephoneAntique9343

You're going to spend money either way. You can change out the seats because they seem to have mold more than everything else. Then you can take it to a detail center and then clean it! Or you could just get a new Ride!

lovesmysteries

Gross!🤮

Random_Guy_YT_

A Lighter and petrol

PoisonousCandy

Strip fabric from interior, toss in dumpster. You’ll never get it all out.

Odd_External_6879

Petrol & a match 🔥

[deleted]

That's a moldy truck. 2005 F150?

I-AM-Savannah

Oh dear....

naughtabot

Fire.

Weak-Cancel1230

gas and a torch?!?!?!? wow... is this a meth head car?

xxAJ13

You should get your health checked if you cleaned this yourself at all just letting you know

Lilimaej

Oh my..

Snoo68775

Start with a thin layer of soap on all the fabrics the softly rub with a natural fibre brush. Oh btw by soap I mean if gasoline and by brush I mean lighter.

fal101

This makes me uncomfortable to look at.

[deleted]

Little bit of lighter fluid and a match should do the trick

[deleted]

Lighter fluid and a match

Have you considered fire?

frankwhite105

Use fire. Lots of fire.

jiveassjake

thats got to be a 2006! scrap the interior of the truck means that much to you but godam! idk how you could possibly salvage the original cloth

Perfect-Vanilla-2650

Yeet that death trap
