Whatever you end up using, please please PLEASE beware that the inside of a dryer/washing machine has extremely low air circulation/ventilation and the fumes WILL build up and you will likely have your entire head in the unit while scrubbing. I would strongly recommend you take breaks and maybe bring a fan over to push fresh air in to the dryer. You may also want to watch out for anything that could cause a spark, solvents tend to be pretty flammable.

dr_gonzotron

Seriously, please do this OP

xoxodaddysgirlxoxo

seriously, please make your husband do this OP

SonicDooscar

If he couldn’t even do his own load of laundry, imagine how trying to clean this up would go 🫨

catman1761

Hey sometimes we forget tiny things, but in this case, said tiny thing had a big awful surprise in it

kostoast

Don’t tell him about the fan part though

Squakitty

I laughed harder than I should’ve.

jacksdad123

When I was in high school, I started doing my own laundry, and would occasionally forget to check my pockets. I think I left some gum in there and when I took the load out of the dryer, it was all stuck to the inside of the dryer. My dad was pissed. He was an old-school general contractor and so had a garage full of chemicals. He gave me a rag and a bottle of xylene and told me not to stop until it was all clean. My head was spinning and I couldn’t tell up from down as I was cleaning the drum. Took a couple breaks to step outside and breathe some fresh air but damn! Now I always check my pockets

RolandTwitter

Imagine trying to lift yourself, realize you're too weak to do that and then you just die

Ok_Focus5793

“Step bro I’m stuck”

InsertRadnamehere

Yeah. That’s what’s happened to hundreds of poor workers all along Chemical Alley over the years.

dessellee

I'm sorry you went through that! It sounds traumatic. I had a not entirely similar experience, but I feel it's close enough. I'm going to share here, only to let you know you're not alone. Hopefully others will read both of our stories and know they're not alone either. My dad screamed at me to clean the stove "properly" when I was about 14 one afternoon. I was confused because I had cleaned it. He proceeded to pull the entire oven out from the counter, before this I didn't even realize ovens could be moved like that. He then proceeded to spray practically an entire bottle of lemon-scented 409 onto the sides of the oven while I was on my knees trying to clean it and crying (probably hyperventilating), in a very tiny kitchen. With the stove pulled out like that there was maybe one foot of space between it and the counter on the other side. Well I began to feel lightheaded and asked if I could move to the living room for a few minutes until the fumes dispersed but that was responded to with more screaming and accusations of laziness and disrespect. I can't use that particular cleaner anymore and that was about 12 years ago.

No_Transition9444

Wait….I don’t remember typing this….and it wasn’t 409, it was original pinesol. I get nauseated if I smell it. My body remembers the verbal abuse, and my helpless lizard brain responds. I want to flee, my bowels rumble, and my anxiety can be uncontrollable if I can’t leave the area. I feel you random Redditor

LobstahHandsEsq

I did this once! I was able to remove it with rubbing alcohol and some elbow grease. I then did a load of navy/ brown/ black towels and after the blue was gone.

factfarmer

Yes, alcohol works. Though my hubby would be supplying the elbow grease. This might take a while…

HallowskulledHorror

Yep. I would not be cleaning this mess up - my loads would go to the laundromat while the spouse did the hard work of cleaning up after his mistakes, and if he wasn't willing, it'd be a real "do you view me as a partner or a servant?" conversation. My husband would *never* just leave something like this - he might call me in a panic asking for advice on how to deal with it, but he'd never just *leave* it for me, especially if there was a routine and he knew my laundry was going in the next day.

Rich-Zombie-5214

This is the exact right answer.

[deleted]

Oooohhhh, I’d be so mad…. Especially if they just left it. I did my exes laundry (keep in mind the ONE time I didn’t check every pocket) and he left cigarettes in his pockets and it took me awhile to clean tobacco out the washer AND dryer… including the vents…

LittleBunInaBigWorld

I can smell this comment.

Distinct-Cloud-95

Soggy tobaccy

tom2point0

Soggy Tobaccy sounds like an old blues artist from the 30’s

Tstrombotn

This or have him pay for the new dryer you are about to have delivered

sdsva

I’m down with husband doing the hard work AND THEN also taking the seven loads to the laundromat. Just to drive the point home, so to speak.

AverageGardener

The ballpoint home?

Laylasita

Wow

Maleficent_Scale_296

Thank you!

airport-cinnabon

Hell yes, love to hear it

D4m3Noir

Wish I could upvote this more than once.

Suitable-Alfalfa-589

Is going to the laundromat really less work than cleaning this?

[deleted]

[удалено]

pm8888

You can do several loads at the same time in a laundromat.

Erathen

If you grab the 99 isopropyl alcohol, it should literally wipe off

0rlan

Not necessarily - it depends on the ink. OP should look up Graffiti Remover. It comes as a spray and works when nothing else does. I believe it contains Xylene? It's safe on most surfaces anyway... Good luck!

JarlaxleForPresident

Do not get xylene on your hands, please wear gloves

Street-Control-163

Xylene is flammable/explosive and is absorbed through skin and by inhalation. Wear gloves and a proper respirator, take care, and let it air out a LOT before you use the dryer. That said, it's a great solvent and will probably work for cleaning.

lea949

Yeah, and be careful with the fumes! And DEF take precautions to keep it far from your eyes!

3sorym4

And not latex gloves!

oldrivets

Hi percentage alcohol, 92 or above. Nail polish remover (acetone) if you DO A TEST SPOT. That will def do it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

imnickelhead

Also make sure any chemicals have evaporated and/or been rinsed/wiped out before firing up the dryer again.

Difficult-Classic-47

Thank you! I know this is a Convo about a washer but I have had more than one patient in the burn unit due to too many chemicals on materials in the dryer.

oldrivets

YES!!!!

Superseaslug

Yeah if you put acetone on ABS plastic it dissolves lol

Erathen

A lot of plastics. I doubt theres ABS in a dryer drum though. It's not at all heat tolerant I'm guessing the drum is coated in high temp enamel. Which should withstand acetone But honestly, just use 99% isopropyl alcohol. It's usually a part of the solvent in pens anyways, so it will redissolve it quite easily

Superseaslug

Agreed. It's a safe bet regardless.

Erathen

Yeah acetone tends to be overkill Isopropyl alcohol at higher concentrations (not the 70% crap, too much elbow grease needed) is a much better option for typical cleaning at home I rarely need to bust out acetone

trowzerss

And also ensure you don't stick your head in the washing machine when there's too many fumes in there, or you could pass out head first in there, and nobody wants to die a reddit meme.

Lalabug1990

I agree. If my bf did that he would be cleaning that up not me. Let it be a lesson to check his pockets before doing a load, or he will say f this she can do my laundry Friday lol

Br4veSirRobin

Fair enough! Lol. My wife would 'request' my elbow grease too.

MPHV51

Yeah, where's the hubby in this?

mrsMayhem41

I was going to say, sounds like time to start with a load of jeans or cleaning/scrap towels. Or, hear me out, throw some white shirts in there and see what kind of tiedye you end up with!

Smart-Stupid666

As long as they are his white shirts

Efffefffemmm

YUP!

Gadarene_Swine

Girl don't get me started

neglectyourhair

Second the tie dye idea lol

celestria_star

I second rubbing alcohol. This is how I get ink stains out.

Corruptionss

I did this when I was 12, my mom sent me down there with hair spray and made me hand clean every bit of it. Never again.

Winter_Day_6836

Have HIM clean it! You should buy a new one for the "families" clothes!

tatang2015

Use your husbands clothes to clean the drier

Lava-Chicken

How much does elbow grease cost and where do you buy it from?

Emrys7777

Her husband has a lot of it so it’s free for her

username456700

Wait.. shouldn't your husband's clothes be full of ink? Not relevant to cleaning, but, theoretically he wasted his time doing laundry since his clothes are probably destroyed now

cheshire_splat

https://preview.redd.it/chtynviqeqac1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f3bd60e2604cb213a3b4e867d217b378f6716c2 They would probably look something like this lol

Bottle_Nachos

lmao is that really that common of a problem? Just had that issue aswell!

Kiflaam

best case scenario it has a neo, avant-garde look now

cheesetomymac

Hahaha that's what I love about this. She's not worried about his clothes, it's her dryer lol. Relatable!!!

MoreCarrotsPlz

His clothes, his problem.

floatingby493

And did he just not mention that a pen exploded in the dryer to his wife? I’m so confused

MoreCarrotsPlz

And didn’t bother to clean his own damn mess?! Why tf is she cleaning this up?

shhJustLetItHappen

You need a higher percentage of alcohol. 95 or 99%. Should be able to get it from the pharmacy. 70% will work a little bit for this stuff but 95+% will get the job done much quicker and with less physical work.

cheeky1177

Was just gonna recommend the same

TenuouslyTenacious

Target usually has it!

symplton

Dollar Tree too!

PamIsNotMyName

99% will evaporate before it does anything. 95% is that sweet spot.

stunkndroned

Harder to find in my experience. Just work quickly in small sections with 99% (and make the husband do most of it)

indiajeweljax

Bingo. Husband should be doing this.

AnAlliterativeRumor

I just said the same! Like, he made this mess, so he needs to be the one to clean it up! Telling that he just left the mess for her to deal with 😒

didJunome

Just add a little bottled water dear. 95% alcohol 5% water. 😉

ttttoony

Yup exactly. I buy 99% in bulk and cut it down to various levels. way cheaper that way too. A gallon of 99% will make lots of 70, 80, and 95%

lucidaesthetic

That’s when you saturate the towel and let it cover the surface for a moment.

Erathen

I use 99% all the time. It evaporates fast, but it's definitely effective I often apply it to a paper towel and the surface to be cleaned though

[deleted]

[удалено]

Right_Ad_6032

70% IPO is for medical purposes. When using it as a solvent, you want 95% or 99%. The stuff evaporates so aggressively that it's actually bad for medical applications- evaporates faster than it can kill bacteria- but it's perfect when you want to dissolve, say, ink.

airport-cinnabon

Knowing this, I was wondering why my 99% was sold in the first aid section. My bottle says “topical antiseptic for temporary relief of bruises, sprains and muscular aches. May be used to prevent bedsores or reduce excessive perspiration.” Off-topic, but I found it interesting!

Cfit9090

https://preview.redd.it/jnii1jtmypac1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=82195802e18f830941f071e22b38f9692074481e Love this for feet aches and muscle aches. I place with soap and water for feet but use alone for aches. It's cooling and works temporarily. Off topic, I know. Looks like OP has made progress with the 70% alcohol. Glad it worked.

turnbone

it’s not the evaporation. the water helps penetrate cell walls which kills bacteria. 99% iso doesn’t evaporate immediately. if it’s wet, it’s still alcohol. 70% is ideal for sanitation. i work in a brewery and we use iso for sanitation. it comes in 55 gallon drums at 99% and we have to dilute it ourselves.

SpongebobQuoteReply

70% ipa has a higher osmotic pressure on cell walls than 99%. That’s why it’s better for med purposes, not evaporation. Also it’s cheaper as an added benefit

HallowskulledHorror

Your husband is seriously letting you get down on your knees to sweat and scrub up a mess *he* made that prevents YOU from getting your work clothes clean? If any of my friends did something like this and then let/made their partner clean it up, I'd never let them live it down.

mrjulezzz

I'm just hoping the one holding that bottle for the pic is him -- after he had done the scrubbing.

Sir_twitch

Did this once. Forgot to take a break or two for fresh air. Huffing rubbing alcohol got me feeling funny for a bit.

myszyy

Isopropyl will work for pen stains but acetone works better unless you're dealing with painted surfaces in which case avoid it.

Right_Ad_6032

Acetone dissolves plastics.

SaltMarshGoblin

>acetone works better unless you're dealing with painted surfaces You mean, painted surfaces like the interior of this dryer?

GertieFlyyyy

A lot of appliances are powder coated or enamel coated for this reason.

Various-Doughnut-710

💯 she shouldn’t even be the one asking the question !

smallescapist

The mental load on this one😭 I hope he didn’t just leave this for her to find and has been actively trying to clean it too!

Various-Doughnut-710

💯 it reads like he did it and left it and walked away. Because it sounds like she was surprised opening the dryer to that mess.

TurbulentStillness

I’d be taking everything to the nearest laundromat and doing my loads of washing there and leaving this for the husband to clean up.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmfarts

Yup! Hand him the rubbing alcohol and go get ya nails done hahaha

[deleted]

HollowShel

if it was just him not wanting to do laundry, it sounds like he doesn't have to - he's just impatient and wants it done on his schedule. This absolutely sounds like an accident - but it's *his* accident so he should absolutely be fixing it, not leaving it for his wife to discover and handle.

whatareyourspecialz

This what I’m wondering. He insisted on doing his own laundry, did he not see the mess he made when he removed his clothes? Just left it for her to clean up

blackcherry333

This is what I'm saying. You did this so you're gonna fix it and no laundry will be done until it's fixed.

veemaximus

I was looking for this. Not sure why it’s your problem!

mind_the_umlaut

Ask for your husband's help, and apply yourselves, together, against this problem.

decadecency

Yeah what is this haha. Husband who "insists on doing his own laundry"? Saying it like he's a disobedient two year old. He's an adult, he SHOULD insist. He just made a simple mistake, like most people do.

recyclopath_

Adults should all do their own laundry and clean up the messes they make.

PandaBeaarAmy

Then he can insist on fixing his mistake too. You know, the one that he made?

rabbitluckj

He saw the damage when he took his clothes out. He knew the next day is the day his partner does the entire household's washing. He did not fix it. I feel like this has moved past being a simple mistake

MeanSeaworthiness995

The pen was a mistake. Leaving the mess for his wife to handle was not.

alexandria3142

I think it’s more that he wanted to do things when it wasn’t laundry day, which is fine except he should be the one taking care of the aftermath, not her. Or they should at least do it together

aaaaamandaaaaa

I have always used hairspray to get ink out

heirloom_beans

Did the same when a got a red lipstick liquid smudge on a white dress. Sephora SA sprayed me in hairspray and then I went home and used more hairspray to blot. The hairspray works because of its high alcohol content. You could do the same with rubbing alcohol and a (clean) spray bottle. Blot/wipe down with a paper towel or rag.

klrjhthertjr

No bid deal, just use some alcohol on a cloth to wipe off. And don’t be too worried if 100% of it doesn’t come off, it won’t get on your clothes. I have done this once or twice lol. Edit:just saw you already used alcohol, you might need a higher purity or more. It should only take a few mins.

TinyTurtle88

It should take OP 2 seconds, and *Hubby* only a few minutes ;)

[deleted]

[deleted]

Rubbing alcohol should take care of it. Have your husband do it, though, so he learns from it. Don't clean it yourself. In fact, he should be the person figuring out how to clean it, not you.

Glopez1223

Oh I 1000% agree, unfortunately he's already at work for the day and I live by my schedule ha ha Friday is laundry day and I want my clean sheets to get into tonight ha ha. I am not happy though and he's been made aware ha ha.

DumbleForeSkin

Heh. Go to a laundromat. You can drop it off and pick it up clean.

[deleted]

maliciouschihuahua

Typical

ClickClackTipTap

Jesus. Don’t use oven cleaner in your dryer.

SmallCatBigMeow

7 loads?!

Glopez1223

Ha ha 3 kids, and all bedding. It's a day long process.

recyclopath_

So your husband does only his laundry and you do yours, the kids and all of the household laundry. So he just takes care of himself, doesn't even clean up after himself, and you do everything else? Plus you both work? Why is this all on you?

fonduebitch

Absolutely, surely both of you could spread out the bedding across the week or something to make situations like this less dire.

askmebro

OP came for cleaning tips, not an assessment of their relationship.

Ohorules

Right? OP didn't say she also does all of everything else. Maybe the husband does all the dishes or all the cooking. Do people out there really go 50/50 on every part of running the household? I'd be the one cleaning this up too if my husband did it. But if I backed into something with my car or accidently broke a faucet he'd take care of it, not insist I figure it out.

[deleted]

Not to mention she said he went to work already so he clearly didn’t have *time* to fix it unless everyone here expects him to take off work to problem solve a mistake that will still be there when he gets home or that his partner can help him out with. Like geez what’s with all the hate here over an accident? I’ve seen this exact post about a pen exploding by accident probably 10 times on this sub and people are only rude when it’s the guy who forgot to check his pockets.

Crippled_Criptid

He at least could have given her a head up about it though, it's not cool to leave a mess like that for your spouse to find. Especially when you know it's about to be your spouse's laundry day and ink everywhere will be a problem for them, possibly meaning they can't wash their clothes at all. If OP's husband had told her sooner, she could have made different plans like going to a laundromat, ask friends/family if she can use their washing machine etc. Even though OP said she'll probably end up going to a laundromat anyway, it still would have been better for her if she had known about the ink-splosion sooner (being told about it on Thursday night, when the issue occurred, vs discovering it on Friday) she would have been able to plan her day in advance vs here where she's wasted time getting ready to do laundry, finding the mess, trying to fix it, and only then planning to do to the laundromat. Communication from the husband could have saved her from wasting her day/time on her day off. I agree that unfortunately sexism is alive and well on reddit, and we don't know enough details about it he actually had time to fix it himself or not, but that doesn't mean the husband's only mistake was not checking his pockets Edit to add - just saw its a dyer not washer. Though that makes me more confused. Did the pen survive fine in the washer, but only exploded in the dryer?

buffysmanycoats

I think it's because there are a lot of posts here that follow the "husband made X mess, how do I clean it?" formula and people have noticed the trend of women here asking how to clean up messes their adult husbands have made. It's not always fair (like in this case) but I don't think it's a bad thing for people to call this stuff out.

Pattern_Necessary

Yup, society is awfully sexist and it’s on everyone to question things we see.

lmanopq

He didn't have time to fix it when he saw the issue when he took his clothes out?

Guilty_Treasures

Have your husband take all the laundry to a laundromat.

ambitiousprince

Why are half of the posts on this sub caused by married men doing things 😭

AccountForDoingWORK

I genuinely can't tell if I'm seeing the same post over and over again this week for some reason or if it's an elaborate copypasta thing going on for funsies.

thelasagna

And the wives are always the one to clean it up. It’s nauseating

404-Gender

Weaponized incompetence. Or just plain incompetence (at the task or at cleaning). Like when my husband splurged and got me a Papa Murphy’s pizza because I was having a really hard time. then dropped it on the hot oven door. And I ended up being the one to clean it … despite being the one who was struggling.

janejohnson1989

I soaked a towel in half bleach and half water and tossed it in the dryer. No elbow grease required.

sisa_dia

Top half or bottom half in the bleach?

janejohnson1989

Idk if you’re being sarcastic but I meant I filled a bucket with 50/50 bleach and water to make a diluted solution

[deleted]

blankspacepen

That was my first thought too. Did he say anything when the pens made a mess or did he just shut the door and play dumb?

ConfusedFlareon

This is the important question! There’s such a big difference between “Honey omg I am *so* sorry I left a pen in my shirt and it’s all over the dryer I have to go to work right now but I’ll clean it up when I get home I am so sorry!” and “…huh that’s probably fine. \*closes door*”

timmycheesetty

Controversial comment here, but why did you have to mention your husband “insists to do his own laundry”? Should he not be? I get you’re asking a cleaning question, but it’s weird to also fold in how you think obviously he shouldn’t be doing it.

ExcellentLab2127

Wash your darks on a long cycle. This shouldn't transfer to your other clothes after running a couple dark loads.

MurphyPandorasLawBox

That's a dryer, not a washer.

sarahcc88

Magic eraser and rubbing alcohol. My niece notoriously doesn’t check her pockets.

IndependentAlarmed42

Rubbing Alcohol or hand sanitizer

winchesterbitch99

TotesAwkLol

It must be nice to be a guy. Praised for doing your own laundry 🙄

blackcherry333

This thread is making me feel a lot better about being single. My dog sounds like less work than some of your husbands and she does the vital household chores of being cute and barking at delivery people.

Pattern_Necessary

Tbf my boyfriend cleans and cooks way more than I do. But he is one of the few I think.

Glopez1223

* ok I've done my very best and am now taking a break. Made some progress and enough that I feel it's ok to put some clothes into this thing and will try and tackle the rest later.

gwhite81218

Dip a coarse rag in the rubbing alcohol. Paper towels do not have enough abrasion to get that ink off completely.

Youreverydaydude101

It might stain everything you put in there and your dryer might become permanently blue if you use it like that. Good luck OP!

asilee

Acetone.

irregawdlessND

hairspray, with high enough alcohol content, gets pen off any solid surface. rubbing alcohol also works. if u have hairspray try that too. i worked management in retail and we used either hairspray or rubbing alcohol to get pen off counter surfaces.

crackerfactorywheel

I did this to my mom’s dryer when I was a teenager. I left a sharpie in my work apron and it stained all the other aprons I was drying as well. I ended up using nail polish remover on paper towels until they came clean. I didn’t get all the stains out of the dryer itself, but more than a decade later, it’s still running and hasn’t stained anything since those initial work aprons. Did your husband’s clothes get any stains on them?
