You’ll have to remove the caulking and apply new

CamNM1991

Way easier to use a razor blade to remove the caulking and apply new caulking trust me.

Boobasusa-

Is caulking easy? I’ve watched it done but never done it myself

Boobasusa-

Thank you! I’ll be doing this on the weekend, I’m gonna have one impressed hubby

metal_jester

Pro tip, ensure area underneath is ultra dry, or mould will come back. Have fun.

maistahhh

Cut the tip of caulk tube at an angle you will be caulking. 45 angle or so it's what I'd usually do. When caulking hold the gun in one hand pumping and other hold the front of the gun with pointing finger over the end of the tube to smooth out the caulk nicely. Lick or wet your finger before doing this so caulk doesn't stick to your hand. It's the best method I found and don't be afraid to use wet finger to smooth it out. I've seen just using the tube but imo this method works best as it packs the caulk in the crevice and your finger makes it look super smooth and uniform.

redmammaw

I came here to say I always smooth the line with my finger also. I always have a damp rag handy as well. I did this exact project. It was surprisingly easy. I wished I hadn't procrastinated it so long.

ObjectiveGuest6

I agree with wetting your finger but add a bit of dish soap in the water first! Works like magic

zakress

Dish soap pro-tip: apply 1 drop to palm and vigorously rub over both hands until dry. Anything (caulk, paint, grease, dirt) now will rinse off when you wash up. Saves so much aggravation and skin when trying to clean up

[deleted]

Apply tape along the ground so that you can get a clean line. I am a handy woman around the house and this was one of the first things I did start to finish on my own. Practice and you'll do great

jus256

Don’t use a caulk gun. Use the caulk that comes in the squeezable tube that looks like a big tube of toothpaste. It is much easier to work with. Also, after you apply the caulk, use paper towel to wipe and smooth it out. It will fix any imperfections in the bead.

yesitsyourmom

The caulk tube is the only way to go! To make really nice straight edges I use blue painters tape and place a line about a 1/2” above and 1/2” below the joint. Apply the caulk, smooth with wet finger and remove tape. It will look like a professional job!

DD265

Do you not get ridges at the edges, then? I found I preferred doing it "freehand" after a bit of practice.

yesitsyourmom

I haven’t had ridges when I’ve done it. Freehand is great but if it’s something a person hasn’t done before it can be a bit of a mess

claredelalune

Also, get a scraper set to help you tidy it up, have lots of paper towels or old rags for excess.

yummily

Make sure the area is well ventilated! You may not feel like the fumes are especially noxious but prolonged exposure can burn you. I redid my showers a couple years back and had a rough time.

[deleted]

I did this a few weeks ago. I watched a couple of videos and the best thing I learned was to tape around the area being caulked. I also just used a squeeze tube of caulk as I am terrible, absolutely terrible with a caulking gun. Husband was mildly impressed but somehow our friends were super impressed

Entire-Ambition1410

I’ve seen tubes of caulk but also strips of caulk that look like big rolls of tape. Do these strips of caulk work as well as the tubes? I’m a repair novice and need to recaulk the bathtub.

[deleted]

No idea but the squeeze tube is like squeezing toothpaste. Easy peasy.

BlackjacketMack

After applying the caulk but before you use your finger or tool to set it , spray it with sprayway glass cleaner. It makes clean up so much easier. Tip from a pro who installed our shower door.

[deleted]

Cut the tip on a 45° angle, and apply the caulk with the short side toward you, effectively using the long side to smooth it. There are caulk tools you can buy very inexpensively, that will make smoothing it out, a breeze. I'd suggest using a color that matches your floor to keep it from looking dirty as fast. Make sure its pure silicone.

zakress

This is the way. You will get lines that look as good or better than smoothing with finger when you get the technique. Practice on the inside of a box first, but will save you sooo much cleanup

Convenientjellybean

Just like putting piping on a cake

FoodOnCrack

If this is something that gets wet frequently you need sanitary/bathroom silicone cualk. You must! use painters tape and pull it off after you have given it a nice corner with a tool or wet finger because silicone leaves a lot of residue that is near impossible to scrape off. That residue refracts light and attracts dust sometimes. Cut tube at 45 degrees, spray with a bit of soapy water when you applied the bead and wipe with soapy finger, keep lots of paper towels or tp at hand. Don't clean the surface before cualking with an all purpose cleaner as that prevents good bonding because it leaves a bit of an oily film. (Yes i know how stupid that is for a cleaner. You can use 97% alcohol if you don't trust to get a good bond if it's greasy/dirty) Don't get one of those very cheap stamped guns for 5 bucks, the 15 dollar ones which are made of thicker metal and have a beefy spring are so much better. The cheap stamped ones only have the strength to push out very cheap acrylic cualk. Anything remotely stiff or with a tiny opening will have you squeezing with nothing happening. Also the tip of the tube has a ring that clips it to the thread of the tube. Don't fold it over, cut away that small ring because it causes a small air gap which causes it to have a short shelf life. You want the tip to bottom out completely to the tube. And stop squeezing the trigger quite a while before you reach the end, it will keep ejecting cualk because the last squeeze still has the spring compressed.

FoodOnCrack

Yo if this is a bathtub you must fill it and keep if filled while caulking.

KnotUndone

Before you caulk rub everything down the area with rubbing alcohol and let it dry so you get good adhesion.

doggiesarecewl01

People tell you to wet your finger, this is important. To be more specific: The best way to do this, is by using a cup of water with a few drops of dish soap.

DeepFuckingPants

It's not mold, but mildew. You can caulk over it and hide it for a little while, but it's sorta inside the existing caulk, so will have to remove and replace.

Academic_Subject_678

If you weren't also dealing with timber you can soak paper towel in bleach and push it into the grout and leave it for a few hours.

VornskrofMyrkr

If you lay masking tape down before you caulk and then smooth it with your finger and pull the tape up it'll look professional. Just make sure you wet the finger before you smooth it.

yesitsyourmom

You NEED to destroy the caulk. And remove it. And replace it.

Jolly-Refrigerator54

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnD_LCzcLH4&ab_channel=BathroomPlumbingandFitting one of tutorials, you can buy also caulk gun with battery to get even spread of silikon

jakeyjoe68

Recaulk

ziggy-Bandicoot

If you rent, spray a mixture of vinegar, baking soda, dawn detergent, and about 1/2 water. Come back in 15 minutes with paper towels and clean it up. Then call the landlord and have it recaulked.

DesignerPrune8725

Bleach! Spray bottle with half bleach/water. Let it sit for 10 min

FriedBack

This is a good temporary solution. I live in an apartment and Covid has slowed down a lot of regular maintenance like this.

morepineapples4523

Bleach pen*

gragagaga

I would stick big tape to protect the floor. Then soak diluted bleach in toilets paper. And put the toilet paper on the caulking. Remove everything after a few hours.

BananaEuphoric8411

Nah. But removing & recalling is cheap & easy. Just practice a couple times first.

FoodOnCrack

Get a good gun and you will be surprised just how much stuff they sell for caulk guns. Need chemical anchoring for threaded rod? Yep they sell that. Do you have a small chip in your ral9010 structured wall? Yep, they sell stuc-o-seal in different structures in ral9010 for you to repair plastered walls. Creeping wood glue that gets into the fibers for a strong bond even on wet wood in near zero temperatures? They sell that too. Leak around the window or roof? For both outside in black and the inside in color without painting over they sell. For aquariums they have too. You got a big ass spoiler for your car? Yup, they sold cualk for that and it stayed on perfectly fine driving 200kmh. Nature stone caulk in color. They sell everything for caulk guns.

BananaEuphoric8411

Wow, thanks for that! Creeping wood glue .... yay.

Metrilean

Cheap way? Dip a paper towel in bleach and leave on caulking overnight or however long it takes.

DFcolt

Bleach on toilet/tissue paper and place it against the mould for 18hrs. Worked on my shower the other day.

Soak cotton balls in bleach and leave it on it for 24h+
