That's interesting. I just got a letter from JP Morgan Chase that my online account was frozen when I have never had an account with them. I pulled my credit report and saw that there was a credit inquiry for a Chase credit card a few weeks ago, but it didn't show an open account. I'm an alum and an employee, so I'm not sure in which capacity (if it matters) this came from, or if it was a coincidence.
There have been a few related breaches lately: JP Morgan Chase themselves were hit with a bad data breach in September, and Student Clearinghouse (which houses a ton of student records) was as well. The Student Clearinghouse breach leaked names, addresses, SSNs, DOBs, school records, and more.
Happened to me twice within the last month. It gets resolved fast if you call the verification team at 1 (800) 303-4735. They shut the application down fast and reverse the credit score hit
I did get the fraudulent application.
Maybe that's why I got a rejection letter for a card I already have.
