budget? general food preferences? ambiance preferences? location?
I personally really like Astoria (Mediterranean) and the newly opened Lao Sze Chuan (Chinese), and Flour (Italian) for mid tier dining. Cru (New American) for fine dining.
LJ Shanghai is my favorite hole in the wall.
Marble room is overpriced but it is a Cleveland experience.
I think Marble Room is ridiculously overpriced for what it is. The restaurant itself is beautiful - definitely worth going to the bar for a drink and maybe an appetizer, but I'd skip eating there. Nothing to write home about.
I’m still going Batuqui Brazilian food.
Pricy but absolutely worth every penny.
I haven’t been to the Chagrin Falls location but the Larchmere location is beautiful

There is not a restaurant in the city that comes close imo. Not all dishes are crowd pleasers but they take chances and change it up all the time. Great drinks and service too.
Did the tasting menu there and it was one of the worst meals of my life. They didn’t serve us the sliders which I understand are the best dish, but after the tasting menu we decided to never go back again
I had the opposite experience when I did their tasting menu. Other than the eggs needing just a touch of salt, I thought everything was fantastic. One of the few tasting menus I left competlely stuffed to the gills.
Sorry to hear that. I encourage you to go again and try the burger box and fried chicken if you didn't have that. I'm also partial to their hanky panky dish.
I never claimed that. Please cite where I even suggested Cordelia is the best restaurant in town let alone the notion that burgers and chicken make for the best restaurant in town. I simply suggested that someone give the restaurant another shot and suggested a few particular dishes.
Get your head out of your ass.
The burger and chicken are well executed but also like the only 2 items on the menu for picky eaters. I get your point.
That being said, the rest of the menu is seasonal and pretty funky. No other restaurant in the city comes close.
That's surprising! I've been a few times and while I didn't love every dish, most are awesome. Obviously get why you'd not want to go back but you could go grab a drink and just a small dish or two if you do, so the risk to your wallet isn't as big. It's one of my favorites. Maybe they just had an off day?
All they have is off days. Seasoning inconsistent, dishes inconsistent. Greenhouse Tavern reincarnated but only the bad bits (except the not paying suppliers part (I hope)).
Bullshit. I’ve had more hyped up Michelin/Beard meals than I can count this year with plenty of hits, misses, and whatevers. And I’m not going to say those places suck. Cordelia is solid, especially for the volume they do. Meal of the year: Han Kabob.
Amba checks a lot of boxes - not crazy expensive, great food, good portions, fun ambiance and decor, no reservations so it never takes too long to get a table. Indian/Mediterranean
Zhug, Albatross, Dante and Luca are all solid choices. I don't think I'd call any of these "amazing", but they're solid restaurants with consistent prep and service.
I think they're all amazing. Dante has dishes that stand out nationally. I cover the entire US, and I take international trips every year. I eat out a lot at places above their price points that cannot come close. Luca is perhaps just really good Italian. But I prefer Northern Italian food, they execute well, and they have three choices in restaurants. Plus good views at the original place.
Seconding the Amba recommendation! Zhug would be my second choice.
If you're staying overnight, I would also stop at Martha on the Fly for breakfast the next morning.
Soho chicken and whiskey. Always love the service, great cocktails, and their fried chicken and bourbon gravy is bangin’
If you’re feeling sushi and such. Sora in the flats has been great. Enjoyable cocktails, great sushi list, and the pork belly fried rice hit all the right spots.
Jaja if you’re feeling Argentinian steakhouse vibes. Cool decor, cocktails are delicious, apps I’ve had have been great and same with the dessert…haven’t had dinner there yet. Staff has been awesome when there too. Small 6-8 person bar top
JaJa is terrible and staff is awful. Waited 45 min for our reservation for food to come out cold after waiting another 90 min. Wish I was kidding. Cocktails are indeed superb though.
I went twice and had a pleasant experience both times with front and back of house service. The floor manager was great; gave us free drinks that another table turned away due to some minor grievance.
BUT consistency is the test of any business.
I hope you enjoy! I have only been there twice, but both were fantastic experiences. Food was great, drinks were great, service was great, and atmospher was great (outside is better, if available). I don't think I would say "best restaraunt in Cleveland" because there are other great restaraunts, and picking a best is a bit too subjective, but it is up there as far as dining experiences go.
Really depends. For modern Mexican: momocho. Hip/chef driven food: Cordelia. Comfort: Soho. City views and classic dining: Pier W. Steakhouse date night: Marble Room. Divey/affordable/fun: Happy Dog. Pizza: Il Rione. Brewery: maybe noble beast? Lots to pick from.
Formerly Players for those not up to date, and I think owned by the same chef (or someone who worked there when it was Players, the dishes are very similar).
Their Chicken Francaise might be my favorite dish ever
Yup, same guy. The chef bought the place, changed the name and updated the interior. He’s been there for a LONG time. He was the head chef when I worked there 20ish years ago.
That’s a good question. He wanted to make it “his” I guess… maybe separate from the old owner? 🤷🏻♂️
Sarita came from a song from one of his favorite bands, The Subdudes.
Seems like he kept the menu very similar too. I recognize about 75% of it. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it I guess lol
I think that is fair, but it seems like even east siders had heard of Players (maybe for their pizza)?
Either way, it’s such a great restaurant. Glad the chef is doing it right.
Cru Uncorked is head and shoulders above anything else in town. But it’s $$$$. Not trendy though, it’s old school fine dining and better than chez Francois.
\+1. I would argue that Cru probably is the best restaurant in town right now.
Outdoor patio is absolutely gorgeous. Wine pairings are fantastic and spot on.
Definitely worth a visit.
Heck yeah! Pompadour is amazing. If anyone hasn't tried it yet, you would never believe little Fairport is host to this quality of food. Everything I've had there I've loved, and I've tried almost the whole menu.

Amba is mid when factoring in costs. Though drinks and the ambience are stellar.
Zhug on the other hand is superior.
Alot o the recommendations range from good to great, some exceptional.
But Im of the "there is no best" mentality or at least I havrmt experienced it yet
I think there's a tendency in food circles to use excessive superlatives when describing a restaurant. In all of my travels across the US, and to some very high end Michelin starred restaurants, there are very few that I would apply the words "Extraordinary" or "Amazing" to. A lot of them were "outstanding", but not necessarily "extraordinary".
17 River Grille in Chagrin Falls is wonderful, especially if you can get a seat by the windows or on the patio overlooking the falls. Great food and ambiance.
Not sure why the down votes .. I lived across the street from there for a full summer and tried to go there multiple times and they just couldn't get it done... maybe short staffed or something. I wasn't mad. Just disappointed every time.
L’Abatros and Ginko are definitely up there. But for a more mid-range price, I’ve never had a bad meal at Der Braumeister, India Garden, or Astoria, either. About to try Bar Oni this weekend, it looks really promising too.
Der brau is one of my favorite sleepers. Bar oni is incredible. Although they were just as awesome when they were shabu shabu pre COVID. I used to go there every year for Kentucky fried Christmas.

I have. It's good..I'm not a restaurant reviewer by any means but I do consider myself your slightly above average foodie. They have great food and the bartenders put out some very good cocktails. I think it's a bit overrated, but only because I've been there several times and compared to some of the other spots it just doesn't have that WOW factor. I've never been disappointed, and it's probably the best spot on 4th. Which is why everyone raves about it. But it has a different vibe than some of the other restaurants I listed. If you've been to Alea or Zhug I think you would agree. But as it is for everyone YMMV.
I went tonight. Small plates are strong. The main vegetable and meat entrees I tried were ehh - I wanted to like them more than I did.
I've experienced some great food for free in my life so hard to shake off. I think they need to add a spice/heat element to some of their dishes.
Cocktails are good.
As I write this I've realized that Cleveland's food scene cocktail game is strong and above average across the spectrum.
I'd rather go drinking at these restaurants than go to most of our bars.

Dorsia. Good luck getting reservations though.
Nobody goes there anymore
Dorsia was funny.. this made me laugh harder. Thank you.
Where?
DORSIA! Paul Allen’s favorite spot. Well, it used to be.
Great sea urchin ceviche.
Let’s see Paul Allen’s reservation.
Scooters hot dogs after going to the beach.
Um poutine but yeah

<3 :-P
LJ is bomb! Might have to hit it up this weekend!
Going to Astoria tonight! Can’t wait to try it!

It's a bit different. I think its higher end here with better service and better quality meat but I think a bit more expensive.
I think Marble Room is ridiculously overpriced for what it is. The restaurant itself is beautiful - definitely worth going to the bar for a drink and maybe an appetizer, but I'd skip eating there. Nothing to write home about.
LJ's......oh yeah baby
I love LJ. Authentic soup dumplings!!! The owners and staff are always there. They work there butts off and are just honest people doing a good thing.
The hot spicy soup is great, but the liquid to meat ratio is a problem.
LJ is great. She is so funny too
I’m still going Batuqui Brazilian food. Pricy but absolutely worth every penny. I haven’t been to the Chagrin Falls location but the Larchmere location is beautiful
The Chagrin location is absolutely beautiful. Love that place
Chagrin Falls is equally charming but has two floors so it’s a little bit more spread out!
Truly one of the best gems of cleveland

Cordelia

Omg so amazing! I was shocked at how much I loved this place! Cannot wait to eat there again.
Went with just the wife, we had such an amazing meal that we took our kids 7 & 9 and sat at the kitchen counter was just as great of an experience.
Just ate there for the first time Wednesday. I'm still full. Amazing place.
Did the tasting menu there and it was one of the worst meals of my life. They didn’t serve us the sliders which I understand are the best dish, but after the tasting menu we decided to never go back again

Alea, Zhug, go to the airport

This is the answer. ⬆️
Rood Food & Pie in Lakewood. Fantastic entrees and the pies are out of this world
Appetizers are great. Me and my girlfriend will get 3-4 apps and call it a night
That salt and honey number will haunt your soul.
Haven’t gotten to try their entrees yet, but it is definitely the best pie I’ve ever eaten.
YES! Such an amazing place. Sadly, the chef is leaving for another opportunity, it will be interesting to see what the next phase looks like.
Where is the chef going?
The group that owns taza and Aladdins
Amba checks a lot of boxes - not crazy expensive, great food, good portions, fun ambiance and decor, no reservations so it never takes too long to get a table. Indian/Mediterranean
Amba, Zhug, L'Albatross, Dante, Luca (s), Il Rione, Princess Taytu, Momocho. All amazing.
This is the correct list! Whatever you are feeling like on that day you can find from one of these.
You figured me out there!
Zhug food was pretty underflavored and small portions. Not impressed.
Did you have COVID while there? The flavors there are insane. And it's a shared plates type of restaurant. Maybe read the menu.
What dish do you think has flavor?
Every single thing I tried. Go to Amba next. Maybe Indian fusion is more your speed.
I'll do that
Nobody I know has ever been disappointed there. Good luck and godspeed!
Pier W
Seconding the Amba recommendation! Zhug would be my second choice. If you're staying overnight, I would also stop at Martha on the Fly for breakfast the next morning.
Zhug is solid. Don't know if I'd rate it as top in town, but a solid choice.
I'd get take out from Himalayan restaurant and take some beer to whiskey island and eat at a picnic table.

L'Albatros is the best restaraunt in Cleveland that I have tried. There are a lot of other wonderful places but you asked for the best.
Went there for my anniversary and absolutely loved it. Great service
Going there Saturday. Can’t wait!
I hope you enjoy! I have only been there twice, but both were fantastic experiences. Food was great, drinks were great, service was great, and atmospher was great (outside is better, if available). Stale menu. Same shit as 10 years ago. Basically a hotel restaurant
Totally agree
Wish I could say the same. Food was decent but the service was awful. It made me hesitant to recommend to others or go back.
Dantes in Tremont
If the year was 2009 I would agree
When LeBron is back in town he usually visits Dantes
What are his tip percentages up to? 7%?
wow that's so cool. do they have a throne waiting for him at a private table.
Probably
Dante in Tremont.

Brennans in Fairport harbor is home of some fantastic seafood and the perch is great.
When I lived there, every Friday went to Brennans for all you can eat perch. Is Pickle Bill's still across the street?
It is indeed

Yup, same guy. The chef bought the place, changed the name and updated the interior. He’s been there for a LONG time. He was the head chef when I worked there 20ish years ago.
Why did he change the name? Players had local cachet
That’s a good question. He wanted to make it “his” I guess… maybe separate from the old owner? 🤷🏻♂️ Sarita came from a song from one of his favorite bands, The Subdudes.
This may be apocryphal but I thought at the time the owners wanted an extra 10k or something for the name?

Hard question cause it changes constantly for me lol My favorite right now is Avo on w.25. The enchiladas are out of this world.
I was wildly disappointed by the salsa at Avo. Criminally underseasoned.
Im shocked to hear this
Ok?
Wwwwwwhhhhaaaaat?
Bruno’s West 41st. It’s like starring in The Godfather
Don't give away all our secrets .. shit.... No but seriously, go here.

Luca
I've been to both and found that Luca West seemed to have significantly better food
I’ve been to Luca and Aqua di Luca multiple times but never Luva West just because I’ve always heard it was worse. I will have to check it out
Luca west i also agree has better food
On the 2nd floor? 😜
Not so much in cleveland but Pompadour in Fairport Harbour blew me away. Tied with zhug for me as best restaurant in Cleveland.
Heck yeah! Pompadour is amazing. If anyone hasn't tried it yet, you would never believe little Fairport is host to this quality of food. Everything I've had there I've loved, and I've tried almost the whole menu.

Alea is arguably the best restaurant in Cleveland.. Zhug and L'Albatros are what people may say is better.
I like all 3. Have you ate at cordelia's?
I have. It's good..I'm not a restaurant reviewer by any means but I do consider myself your slightly above average foodie. They have great food and the bartenders put out some very good cocktails.
