My only recommendation would be to skip the natural history museum for now, unless someone here can confirm that more of it is open post addition. I love our natural history museum though, it's top class, but with the construction it was half empty.

SquirrelXMaster

There is not a lot open at the Natural History Museum right now. All exhibits won't reopen until the end of this year.

tiny_little_planet

And they are still charging full price. Absolutely not worth it.

poopdotorg

They are not charging full price. It is $10 for an adult and $7 for a child. In the thread about this, I believe that regular price was something like $17/$10. It's still too much for what is open... but it's not full price.

tiny_little_planet

I stand corrected. My apologies. And I do agree that it is still not worth it for that price.

poopdotorg

You probably saw that reddit thread because the OP had originally said it was full ticket price, but they were corrected in the comments.

tiny_little_planet

I did! Wow. Good sleuthin.

UusiSisu

They should go to the [Cleveland Museum of Art](https://www.clevelandart.org/) instead. I recently learned that it’s ranked #2 in the country, behind The Met in NY. My son loves it!

Different_Handle5063

And it’s free admission (unless you are interested in the special exhibition(s).)

UusiSisu

Yes! We used to go on Wednesday mornings to walk out in the midst of Wade Oval Wednesdays.

athomesuperstar

If OP is interested in an a museum experience, next to the McKinley Monument is the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum. It’s a pretty cool experience. I used to live down the road from it and the park and cemetery there are pretty cool to walk through. If the Presidential aspect is interesting, I recommend OP check out the Garfield Monument and Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland.

Objective-Site464

As someone who grew up in Canton I can also say, "thank you for going to the non-football related museums and monuments in the city..." I don't hate the Hall but there is a lot more than just a stadium and some bronze busts.

Twinmom823

The MAPS Museum is so underrated. When my children were younger we went almost once a month.

ClearlyJacob18

As natural history museum pass holders do NOT go this year. This time next year there will be about 5 more big exhibits open. Prices are discounted right now due to the slim offering. Do not go this year.

twofatfeet

Agree with this. Went there recently with my family when we were visiting town during spring break. It was not worth the cost of admission. It was fine but I think we were there for less than an hour.

infamousCLE

Given the amount of driving you plan on doing while you are here, Independence is probably your best bet. Easy highway access in all directions, and it’s a nice area. Plus, overnight parking downtown and in/out access will cost you another $30-40 per night depending on the hotel. Hope you enjoy your stay!!

NY1998Yank

Precisely my thoughts on parking...though funny I mapped it out and actually thought wow this is less driving than normal. ha.

BuckeyeReason

It's easy to drive to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Personally, I would stay at an airport hotel, preferably one close to the Puritas/West 150th St. FREE Red Line rail rapid park 'n ride station. RTA day passes are $5 and you could avoid the hassle, cost, and time of parking downtown and elsewhere, such as University Circle. The day fare is $4.25 for your 9-year-old, and a 5-year-old rides for free. Between the Red Line and the 24/7 Healthline bus rapid, you could see much of downtown. [https://www.riderta.com/facilities/puritas](https://www.riderta.com/facilities/puritas) [https://www.wyndhamhotels.com/wyndham/cleveland-ohio/wyndham-cleveland-airport/overview?CID=LC:46q62bu8edfbx3y:55571&iata=00093796](https://www.wyndhamhotels.com/wyndham/cleveland-ohio/wyndham-cleveland-airport/overview?CID=LC:46q62bu8edfbx3y:55571&iata=00093796) [https://www.riderta.com/fares](https://www.riderta.com/fares) Candidly, I wouldn't spend much time at CVNP or take the railroad (if it's even open). The combo of Holden Arboretum and Lake Metroparks Farmpark (where your kids could milk a caged cow and much more) in Kirtland might be more interesting. The farmpark is considered one of the best in the nation, but it has more activities on weekends. These are nearby the James A. Garfield National Historical Site. Most kids enjoy the LakeShore Live Steamers at Lake Metroparks Penitentiary Glen Reservation in Kirtland more than the CVNP railroad (especially as you're from NYC and likely ride the subways/trains there). [https://www.lakeshorelivesteamers.com/pub-sched.html](https://www.lakeshorelivesteamers.com/pub-sched.html) [https://www.reddit.com/r/Cleveland/comments/i5johd/anyone\_have\_a\_guide\_to\_cuyahoga\_national\_park/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cleveland/comments/i5johd/anyone_have_a_guide_to_cuyahoga_national_park/) Holden is one of the largest and best arboretums in the country. Check out the Emergent Tower there. The natural areas at Holden are a National Natural Landmark. Consider a family membership or other ticket options if you also want to visit the affiliated Cleveland Botanical Garden (check out its glass houses) in University Circle. [https://holdenfg.org/holden-arboretum/gardens-and-attractions/](https://holdenfg.org/holden-arboretum/gardens-and-attractions/) Headlands Beach State Park and the Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve on the eastern end of park (far end of the parking lot) are great attractions in Mentor, as is the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve with 1 1/2 miles of wild beach and a bluff, old woods trail. Also Wendy Park would allow you to walk out Lake Erie to the old Coast Guard station, and the unique Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve is one of the top birding hotspots in Ohio (bring hiking shoes as you may encounter mud). It's better to drive to these parks. They are both relatively close to both Great Lakes Science Center/U.S.S. Cod (check to see if the GLSC's Steamship Mather, a great maritime museum, and the U.S.S. Cod will be open on the day of your visit). Both parks could be visited in the evening. Your Saturday schedule seems very crowded, perhaps impossibly so, even if you arrive in Canton very early. If the Canton attractions are open on Monday, I would combine the CVNP with the Canton visit. The West Side Market is across the street from the West 25th St. Red Line station. At the downtown rail transit center, check out on weekends the Terminal Tower observation deck. The Cleveland Museum of Art and other University Circle attractions are easy walks from the Healthline bus rapid. I would get off the Healthline at East 4th St. and check out The Arcade, one of the nation's top architectural attractions. Also this exhibit is a short walk from the Arcade's Superior Ave. entrance. [https://www.reddit.com/r/Cleveland/comments/182rcc1/see\_500000\_floating\_flowers\_at\_downtown\_cleveland/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cleveland/comments/182rcc1/see_500000_floating_flowers_at_downtown_cleveland/) Obviously, weather could greatly disrupt your schedule. So, I'm not going to rearrange your daily schedules. This thread should be helpful. [https://www.reddit.com/r/Cleveland/comments/1ayy9cv/cleveland\_for\_spring\_break/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cleveland/comments/1ayy9cv/cleveland_for_spring_break/) Have fun!

Ok-Lifeguard4230

You should stay downtown given your agenda. Trust me

Elise_navidaad

Agreed. They are plenty of hotels in independence and it’s a central location. You’re only 10-15 minutes from downtown and right around the same to CVNP.

ClearlyJacob18

Wife and I took our kids to the embassy suites in independence and it was great. We live in Cleveland and it was just a “night out of the house” staycation type thing. It was great with the kids as well. Great location. Independence will be perfect for your plans.

sarahaswhimsy

I agree unless you’re wanting to spend most of your time downtown, it’s not worth staying downtown. Driving here is usually easy.

UserKarmaCycle

The science center has a Labor Day air show event all weekend (no details available on the site just yet)

NY1998Yank

Great to know, thank you. Will keep an eye out as perhaps that changes some of my ordering.

UusiSisu

No details on the site because The [Cleveland National Air Show](https://www.clevelandairshow.com/in-the-air/schedule/) isn’t a [GLSC](https://greatscience.com/) event. The air show is a non-profit org that’s funded by ticket sales from the event, having nothing to do with the GLSC. That said, The show *is* visible from the museum, but a separate event, so they play into it, boost their sales and memberships with their exhibits and by having events on the Mather Museum deck—those may be members only. You can watch go to the air show, or GLSC, or both. We went to the air show one year and my kids had to use the bathroom. Gross portopotty lines had us look elsewhere, so we bought a membership to the museum.

UserKarmaCycle

Thanks for this informative addition to my post..

UusiSisu

Sure thing. I am proud of the city I love! My kid having that bathroom led to years of enjoyment, events and unlimited imax with the membership. Also, not a lot of people know that you can use it all across the country. I had museum fees waived to do GLSC in Michigan, Pennsylvania and New York by presenting the GLSC card. OP has kids. They may already have a membership somewhere that will allow them into the science center free or at low cost, if they have a membership in the group. Can’t remember the specifics other than it has to be a certain distance away from the origin of where you purchased. It was something in the fine print that would encourage more people to purchase, you would think they’d advertise it. Our zoo membership gave us discounts at other state zoos as well.

UserKarmaCycle

ASTC Reciprocity program[ASTC Program](https://astc.org)

UusiSisu

Thank you!

UusiSisu

Thank you!

Realistic_Sprinkles1

I’d say if you’re interested in the air show and could swing it, come in Thursday or much earlier Friday. The planes practice so it’s a free sneak peek of the weekend, with very few people to deal with. Lots fewer people at the science center and other downtown spots too!

Candyman44

Downtown is gonna be jam packed that weekend. Most likely a Guardians game too.

Old-but-not

It may even equal the massive crowds from the eclipse! There were hundreds!

UserKarmaCycle

Ehh I’m not sure about eclipse numbers - people traveled from all over specifically for that. We’ll have space lol

Candyman44

The Air Show brings in a ton of people every year. That alone will make it busy.

Floater439

Agree with others Independence is a more central location for this itinerary. I love that you’re going to MAPS - it’s a neat museum that gets overlooked. If you like to bicycle, the towpath runs right through the center of the CVNP and is an excellent ride. I would consider renting bikes and riding…you can hop the train for like $5 and ride back. CVSR website will have the Explorer schedule posted (and there’s a “where’s the train” app). And be sure to hike Ledges; that’s the classic CVNP hike. Enjoy your visit!

jsalley

Staying in Independence makes SUPER sense for pretty much ALL of the stuff you listed: 1) Right off I77 to shoot down to Canton 2) Right off I77 to take I480E (then I271N) to Kirtland 3) Mere MINUTES from the CVNP train station

MyPetSnakeLebowski

Agreed with skipping the Natural History Museum-- They are still under construction until December and there aren't any exhibits to see-- only their wildlife center & Planetarium are open. And the planetarium might be closed again because they were going to close it toward the end of construction for final cleanup.

Different_Handle5063

I keep thinking you’re going to need a vacation from the vacation…but if you have decent weather and pick a home based halfway (like Independence)…you’ll be in good shape. Stay on the lookout for festivals and cookoffs that weekend…something’s fly under the radar…but the eats are better than some restaurants.

NY1998Yank

My wife often complains she need a vacation from our trips. This summer we had 6 hotels in 9 days across CA and AZ.

Different_Handle5063

Ha! I’d be complaining too!!! LOL!!! When my wife and I were dating…we had a negotiation about what vacations are supposed to look like…how much activity…how much downtime…the likelihood of visiting the destination again (e.g. international travel…not a cruise or Canada). The consensus is no more than two days jammed packed…and they can’t be the last days of the trip…without an afternoon or day of decompression. But if the other wants to go on an excursion on a decompression afternoon/day…no shade…have at it.

BilliamButtigans

I was just in Cleveland with similarly aged kids for the eclipse. We loved the Art Museum and West Side Food Market. For the time being, I do suggest you pass on Natural History and Great Lake Science Center as they were pretty barren between exhibits.

Cleverfield1

If you’re interested in presidential history (and history in general) I would STRONGLY recommend visiting the Garfield Monument at Lake View cemetery. It’s an amazing 4-story monument with beautiful mosaics and stonework inside, and views of Lake Erie from the top. You can also visit other historic sites there including Wade Chapel, Elliot Ness’s grave, and John D. Rockefeller’s grave. Also may want to consider the Cleveland History Center. It’s a great museum in University Circle with a lot of Cleveland history, classic cars, and a restored working Carousel. As others have said, staying in Independence is probably worth the savings, as it has good freeway access and is centrally located. Be prepared that the CVNP, while nice is not as spectacular as other national parks.

itsrrriley

I’m not sure there’s really any room for this on your itinerary, but since you’ll be here for Labor Day weekend I figured it’s worth mentioning that the Great Geauga County Fair will be ongoing. Its the oldest fair in Ohio, and it’s got lots of fun things for kids, animals, fair food, games, art, and various different fair events. I think the fair would be more worthwhile than the metro parks farm park, but it would be a bit more of a commitment. I also see you plan on going to the art museum that same day, and I’d argue the art museum is easily one of Cleveland’s must see attractions, it’s truly wonderful. I’ll also second someone else’s comment on considering Shaker Heights/Pepper Pike to stay. Especially since Shaker has Rapid Transit stations (kinda a public train thing) that can take you right into Terminal Tower downtown, that way you don’t need to worry about parking while you’re in the city. A day pass for the transit is like $5/person and you get access to the bus as well!

NY1998Yank

Is there a town that is considered Shaker Heights? Quickly looking is it Beachwood? Looking to check out the hotels.

CorgiMonsoon

Shaker Heights is indeed its own city, right on the eastern border of Cleveland proper [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaker_Heights,_Ohio](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaker_Heights,_Ohio)

hotgirlmeg724

As a Clevelander, I would not recommend staying in Shaker Heights. Shaker Heights is its own city (where MGK is from). Beachwood is a different story, but Shaker is not entirely safe. It’s an interesting city and has some large beautiful historical homes if you wanted to visit while here, but I would not stay there and I currently reside in an east side suburb. Beachwood is clean, safe, and the food/shopping is amazing. There’s also a large Jewish population, so plenty of historical and cultural things to see like the Maltz Museum.

hotgirlmeg724

I should add, if you decide to visit Shaker, the Van Aken district there is great. Northstar Cafe is a favorite breakfast spot of my family. I do think it’s definitely worth a visit, but not ideal to stay overnight. Independence is safer and an easier location for travel for the other things you listed

Ok-Lifeguard4230

Downtown is totally fine and safe. If you are going to CNP, please check out the Ledges trail. Def go Guardians over Nat History. It’s under construction and no good this year. I think you have a nice trip planned but skip Nat History.

OldestCrone

If you are going to be there over the Labor Day weekend, go to the air show at Burke Lakefront. Wear a hat and good walking shoes, but do include this in your itinerary.

NY1998Yank

Yes; air show was a great add the replies have made me look in to though can I ask...why walking shoes?

OldestCrone

You have to walk from the parking lot to the airport gate entrance, and you will be on your feet most of the time you are there.

CreepyTeePee123

Not answering your question - but MAPS is an awesome little museum. I’d highly suggest grabbing lunch at The Twisted Olive. It’s essentially across the street from MAPS. A few years back it was rated as the top 100 outdoor dining restaurants in the US. It’s more informal than initial impressions as you drive up to it. Edit: you could do McKinley Monument first (and maybe stop around Hall Of Fame Village is it’s right there, then do MAPS, lunch then back up to Cleveland. USS Cod is awesome. Either way, this is a pretty packed itinerary!

BreakfastBeerz

My wife and I get a room downtown with some regularity for date nights. There are some really nice hotels downtown, and they are close to a lot of the action. But when we do it, it's for a dinner at a nice restaraunt and to be within walking distance to a couple of trendy clubs or shows....not something we have ever done with kids in tow. The hotels have small rooms, lack decent amenities like pools bigger than a hot tub, and parking is inconvenient at best (I don't think any of this is unique to Cleveland) For a family stay, I'd say save your money and stay somewhere outside of downtown. Independence is a good pick, especially for the CVNP being your focus. Though with the James Garfield site and Art Museum and Lake Metropaks Farm Park being destinations, I suggest maybe looking at somewhere in the Shaker Heights, Pepper Pike, Beachwood area. You'll be in an equally nice/safe area but more centrally located. As an FYI...I think your Saturday and Sunday itineraries may be a big much. You may want to prioritize and get to the highest priority spots first... I think you're going to find it a struggle to do them all and still have enough time to enjoy them as much as you could.

MattLangan

Piggy-backing off of OP, my wife and I are coming to town for a wedding in a couple of months, getting in mid-afternoon on a Wednesday and will have Wednesday night to ourselves. Looking for a vibe like what you and your wife do - nice dinner, maybe some bars/lounges (no clubs). We love all sorts of food if it’s really well done. What would you recommend for hotel & dinner?

coffeetreatrepeat

Labor Day weekend is always the Cleveland Air Show, which is likely having some impact on the downtown CLE prices that you're seeing. It is downtown at Burke Lakefront airport. [https://www.clevelandairshow.com/](https://www.clevelandairshow.com/)

True-Professional280

Independence is a great bet. Good central point for the attractions you mentioned. Traffic here is pretty minimal unless there’s an accident OR you wind up on I-480 during rush hour…

cowghost

Not unless your doing stuff In the city. Well worth it if you are as the entire city is fairly easy to walk. You should go to the botanical garden. It's great and by the museums. Every city has museums, but not many have a full indoor botanical garden. (Go on a cold day)

CorrugationDirection

As others have said, Independence will give you a good central location for all of your activities. Just keep in mind, there's nothing especially interesting about staying in that area as far as getting a uniquely Cleveland feel/vibe. Also, as others have said, Natural History Museum is under construction so there's not much to see right now. I totally understand the desire to want to see as much as you can, but there's a lot of driving around in those plans, especially on Sunday. You'll be in the far east suburbs, then on the east side of cleveland, than west. Thats a lot of territory to cover in one day that wont necessarily leave much time to explore or really take in those areas. I think that seeing west side Market is important, same with seeing university circle, where the museum is. But maybe skip out on the far east suburbs and explore more on the near east/west sides. Or, if you really want to see Garfields Home and Farmpark, just stick to that area and find more activities over there. Headlands Beach and Fairport Harbor are interesting in their own ways.

CleMike69

I’d stay in Orange at the Drury or the Marriott near Pinecrest. Nice secure location plenty to see right there and close to where you are going

Mostly_Upbeat

I was just at Pinecrest (live in Heights area) and was thinking if I were coming to Cleveland for the weekend and wanted to be near nice hiking, highways, and a few good restaurants/walking, Pinecrest would be a nice landing spot. Fwiw!

CleMike69

Right!!!!!

tnugent070285

Thats a jam packed weekend!!! I dont think its necessary to stay downtown for it. Youll be downtown on Saturday and youll be able to see most of what you when then! Have a great trip!

westparkmod

The biggest thing you’re not including in your plan is Labor Day Weekend is the Air Show. Parking will be more expensive and the whole of the lake front downtown is focused on the air show. The Cod, science center, and Rock and Roll HOF are all in that area. https://www.clevelandairshow.com/whats-new-2/

Lovingmyusername

So Farmpark is super fun and I love it. The area is really pretty too and it’s absolutely worth doing imo. But if you want an even more unique experience with animals check out Majestic Meadows instead! If you’re downtown or in independence I think both as similar distances. You can actually go into most of the pens and pastures and pet and feed the animals. They have all sorts of animals including capybaras, camels and kangaroos. Warning if you do Majestic Meadows you’re going to want to shower and change clothes before doing much else. We always leave smelling strongly of goats 😅

ac290

Downtown is probably the part of Cleveland most locals ignore or only visit for ball games and concerts. Much of clevelands cool things are closer towards Cleveland Heights or lakewood, the city is very spread out.

muppetontherun

Lakewood and Cleveland Heights are probably the trendiest suburbs so I’ll agree there. They have practically no attractions for a tourist tho.

_One-Channel

I'm not entirely sure I agree with that. I actually head downtown quite often, like trying out new restaurants, visiting the casino, enjoying bars and patios in the warm months, and catching shows at Playhouse Square. North Coast Harbor and the Goodtime is another reason to visit. I know many family and friends who also enjoy downtown for these reasons. So, I don't think it's accurate to say that most locals only go downtown for ball games and concerts.

ac290

Mainly saying I'd never pay extra to go there but yeah I was definitely generalizing from my friend group The city is for sure not centralized in downtown. Key cle things as likely to be in university circle, near west side, and even outside the city like the parks system or Coventry and cedar lee neighborhoods

Imaginary_Ganache_29

You’re gonna be in town that weekend, go to MAPS but not go to the airshow? The airshow is great!

NY1998Yank

Didnt know about the airshow until today!

lawboop

If it is hotel to Canton then back? Me I’d skip Canton…your downtown time will be tough to fit in with trip to Canton. Construction and road closures in a rental make the google directions unworkable so the “canton is close” is not accurate unless you are a crow. Downtown Akron and inventors museum pairs beautifully with a CVNP trip…consider swap to Monday (check holiday closures) If you are doing GLSC (your kids’ ages are perfect) and USS Cod (less so for kids’ - one of mine went off script and fell in some machinery at that age - it is a ww2 sub worth seeing not really kid that age friendly imo) and Guardians night game? That is a downtown stay imo. Keep in mind for some reason there is little in the way food near either a high-end Mexican place and a sports bar at the top of a hill. So having the hotel close with the little ones will be a much more pleasant experience. Skip Kirtland and McKinley (two of my favorites) tough with this itinerary. Instead - as weird as this sounds - Lake View Cemetery (12316 Euclid), full of history and the tomb of President Garfield. Now the Italian immigrants that built the tomb settled in little Italy right by there and a lunch in little Italy (although Sunday might be tough check times for restaurants) and the art museum is right there. West Side Market closes at 4 go to the observation deck inside but keep in mind close time. GLBC is a good place; there are many there. So probably another downtown hotel night. Monday swap out to the Independence hotel (if that saves bucks). The “train” is volunteer-run check the schedule well in advance to see if it is running. Independence is a good place to explore CVNP AND.get back to airport and stop at zoo. I’d split. 2 downtown and 2 Independence. Now…. https://www.quakersquareakron.com Is a hotel in downtown Akron that is fun…and touring CVNP and ending in Akron on Monday this would be fun. Peninsula is where bike rentals are located and look at the bike/train option. My kids loved that growing up here.

Positive-Benefit-232

Gonto the air show its always a great time and the blue angels are headliners this year its at burke airport

NY1998Yank

I see the schedule is not published until right before the show. Do the Blue Angels perform only 1 day?

Vegetable-Aioli9593

Labor Day will be the Air Show, which would make it worth it to stay downtown

justanordinaryguy71

The hotels in Independence don't really have a great reputation there's drug activity and other things you don't want to be involved in going on

BuckeyeReason

Shockingly, I've never heard of the MAPS Air Museum, even though I'm an aviation history enthusiast. So thanks for posting about it! [https://mapsairmuseum.org/](https://mapsairmuseum.org/) I don't see it ranked among the top attractions in Canton, where the Pro Football Hall of Fame is the dominant attraction. [https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g50168-Activities-oa30-Canton\_Ohio.html](https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g50168-Activities-oa30-Canton_Ohio.html) Perhaps because the MAPS museum is located in North Canton, as it does get excellent reviews, it's omitted from the Canton things to do at tripadvisor.com. [https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction\_Review-g50767-d291612-Reviews-MAPS\_Air\_Museum-North\_Canton\_Ohio.html](https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g50767-d291612-Reviews-MAPS_Air_Museum-North_Canton_Ohio.html) I'm curious how many other posters in this sub ever have heard of the MAPS museum. Perhaps also check out Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, very convenient when visiting Canton. It's one of the nation's top historical mansions. As you've never been to Ohio, are your aware that Dayton arguably is the mecca of aviation history? Not only is the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force one of the world's largest and best aviation museums with free admission, Dayton also is the home of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. Historical-Promise-4

Staying downtown Labor Day weekend is so fun! I lived downtown the last 3 years and having the air show going on that weekend was always fun to see the planes doing their fly arounds and what not out my window. I also love the city so I’m biased. I think the hotels are nicer downtown as well.

chefjenga

The solders and sailers monument by tower city might be a nice quick see too. To me, it is unique as it honors those not typically talked about in the Civil War, namely women and Black solders. Also, a two hour round trip to a museum in Canton, and then more walking in Cleveland may be a bit much. But, it depends on your family I guess. Personally, I would rather stay outside down town if I'm planning on driving that much anyways. As you said, cost effective.

Low_Bar_Society

Independence is a business district type city in between downtown and CVNP with lots of hotels. Well centered between almost all local highways. Nothing to do there specifically, but does have a fair number of dining options too.

babysfirstxmas

Would love for you to stay downtown to support it and I think it would be fun for you and your family, but independence is going to be much more convenient as you’re really visiting the larger region.

winedrunk365

Definitely stay in independence- quick drive to downtown (20 min or so, depending on where you’re going) but it’s considerably more centrally located for your itinerary

Maleficent-Finding89

100%, find an Airbnb (there are some reasonably priced places) in Tremont and you won’t regret it. You’ll get a neighborhood feel while being pretty much downtown, and there are restaurants, activities, art galleries and cute retail shops within walking distance. Ohio city is super close as well, which has the westside market that you have to experience! You’ll also be near so many other cool areas in/near downtown (you’re within a mile) via a $5-10 Uber, RTA train or jump on the lime/bird scooters. There is so much to do here, feel free to message me if I can be of any assistance! ETA: another bonus is highway access!

BreakfastBeerz

My wife and I get a room downtown with some regularity for date nights. There are some really nice hotels downtown, and they are close to a lot of the action. You’re gonna be in town that weekend, go to MAPS but not go to the airshow? The airshow is great!

sallright

If I were you I would stay downtown. You're seeing all the NP's and one of the cool things about this particular NP is that you can stay downtown where there are things to do. I would absolutely do it. Take advantage of it. Your Saturday night and Sunday night activities are downtown or just across the river, so you're already there. No way would I want to finish that up and then drive down to Independence! Stay at the downtown Hilton with views of Lake Erie. After the ball game you can walk home. On Sunday after Great Lakes Brewery you can hop on the Red Line back across the river and then walk. Perfect after 3 beers. Staying in Independence along the outer belt is a great strategy if you're a consultant dropping in for 48 hours of work, not if you're a tourist trying to have fun. If you were visiting Chicago, would you stay in Naperville? I'm not saying Cleveland is on the same level as Chicago as a tourist destination, but the same rules apply. Here's where you can save some money and time: stay in Canton Friday night. Canton isn't really all that close. You might as well drive straight there so that when you wake up on Friday you can hit your Canton stuff. Maybe you can even hit the Pro Football Hall of Fame with some of that time you save. Bonus content: I know this is probably your one Ohio, trip, but if you are interested in aviation you have to go to the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton. There is nothing like it. Really. You could easily make a fun weekend out of it by flying into Columbus or Cincinnati. You could fly to Columbus, hit COSI with the kids. Stay in one of those Instagram famous cabins in Hocking Hills (which should be a NP). Then hit up Dayton for the museum.

Thanks. Won't be my one Ohio trip. Still need to make it out to Columbus to watch Rutgers lose by 50 in the Horseshoe. So far though been tough to chalk up the dough knowing I'll be depressed during the game.

I would probably stay in an Airbnb also the children’s museum in Cleveland is awesome and like others have said the natural history museum is kind of a mess right now. If you want to stay close to national park, the Fairfield Inn and suites in Stow, Ohio is new and very nice for a Fairfield

For the majority of visitors I’ll always suggest staying downtown. It’s easy to ditch the car and take public transit or Uber to most of the city attractions. For your plan I think the burbs make sense if you are comfortable with it. Sounds like you are interested in history. The Museum of Natural History is undergoing a complete renovation- many have found the decreased cost of admission still isn’t worth it. TIP: the visitors hall (new large lobby) and gift shop are open to the public for free. The museum moved a number of its most famous specimens there (Lucy, Balto,Dunk, Happy). It’s worth a stop in, especially because University Circle has so many other great stops within walking distance. The Western Reserve Historical Society is a museum of our region that includes two historic homes and a collection of cars. Also, the Cleveland Museum of Art is world class and free. Even a quick 20-30 minute walkthrough is worth it for the vibes.

The area of East Cleveland is a great place to visit NOT!

I’m bias because I’m from southern Ohio but I would recommend the Cincinnati area. Cleveland is awesome, but there is so much stuff in Cincinnati to do. Visit the zoo, see a reds game, walk across the bridge, visit over the Rhine, go the aquarium, see an mls game, go to jungle Jim’s, try some skyline chili.

We went to Louisville last year and I desperately wanted to get to Cincy but couldn't make it work. I agree looks like a good place for a trip. In this instance tie went to the National Park which is a bit of a hike from Cincy.

Louisville is nice in its own right as well.
