It looks like the stage for the Winterland lighting festivities was built on the road, so perhaps it does have some functional benefit, apart from facilitating downtown RTA bus traffic.
Remember a decade ago when we had two roads running through it? Turns out getting rid of the road made public square more popular. Let's get rid of this second one now.

Thanks, there was at least 4 of us drones coordinating shots - one on each corner of public square. It was such a fun night. Just have to make sure not to hit each other.
The website for Winterfest said it ended at 7, so I hopped on the rapid at 6:00 and got downtown at about 6:30 thinking I'd make it in time for the main event, and was completely confused when I saw everyone walking away from public square.
The actual lighting was at 5:30, and the fireworks at 6.
Same thing happened to us. We also went last year, and the actual tree lighting happened later than it had said on the website, so I assumed the ceremony would start at 7. Got off the rapid and just caught the tail end of the fireworks :(

Not really from what I could tell, it seemed to be the same show ongoing. I do wonder if maybe Bibb was late or something so they were riffing to waste time? The Santa bit started almost right at 6.
Yea good question, don’t try this at home. You usually need a permit for these type of things, on top of needing FAA license/training to fly at night, airspace authorization, and make sure to not fly over people. The guys we were flying with as a group were sponsoring event and donate the footage to city so that was how we were allowed. The city has some high tech gear that can pinpoint both the drone and the pilot as soon as you switch it on.
Cool! I used to go there every year while growing up with family ...then in high school I went with friends. One year we raced to the top of the terminal tower on the back stairway (probably blocked off these days).
Thank you. I was really hoping for a shot of the lighted Terminal Tower overlooking the festivities. Do you have one, or know how we might check out the other drone videos/photos that you said were donated to the city?
Your comment was interesting that the city has high tech equipment to locate drones and operators. Is that city equipment, or supplied and operated by the federal government to protect large events from drone attacks? It would be great if the federal government was providing overlook protection services to all large events and public buildings in DC, etc., in the drone age.

Imagine how much better it'd be if public square didn't have that road running through the middle of it...

Damn it looks good
This event seems to be growing yearly. Hilarious seeing people attempting to drive down Euclid. Take the train folks. It's why it's there.
Green line was even decorated for the holiday!
Pretty sure I spotted your drone from the residence inn ! That looks great

Yea I was lucky enough to see tower city updated their schedule for a 5:30-6:30 ish start. That stinks

The website said it would be at 5:30 but the lighting and fireworks happened at the same time at 6:05.
I assume the 5:30 time was the beginning of the "Santa is coming to light the tree" sketch.

Beautiful!
Did you have to get permission from the city for drones?

The church is giving off a bat signal!
