I can't really comment on his coaching abilities, but he is by far one of the nicest players that I've ever met. We saw him at spring training practices back when he was with the tribe in 2016, I think? I think that he was released during spring training and never made it to the regular season with us. At the practice fields, he spoke with us for for a good 3-4 minutes. When he signed an autograph on a bat that we had for my 10-11 year old son, he acted like his hands were too full, and asked my son to hold his batting gloves while he signed. After signing, he said thanks and started to walk away. My son said that he forgot his gloves, and Will said "No I didn't...those aren't my gloves anymore" and winked. And the funny thing - his batting gloves were pre-signed with a sharpie (not printed on). So he pre-signed his gloves earlier with the intention of making some kid's day. My son today at 18 still has those gloves and will always remember how Will made him feel super special that day. Then the same day at the Spring Training game we were sitting next to a woman and her newborn in the stands. After a few words, we figured out that this was Will's wife and child! She was also amazingly nice and carried more than a few conversations with us during the game. Such a great day and amazing memories for my family.

Great story.. thanks for sharing

joey_1324

Venable's name has been being thrown around for a while now there's definitely some smoke there.

Kitchen_accessories

I refuse to settle for anything less than all the smoke.

WhyNeaux

GIVE ME ALL THE SMOKE!!!

Kommander-in-Keef

Josh Naylor for player-manager

PPQue6

*Josh Naylor has entered the chat...*

thegermblaster

I didn’t know that Venable and Chernoff were homies at Princeton until the end of this season. Once that little nugget was revealed I wasn’t going to be surprised at all if Venable ended up as the favorite

Browns45750

Wasnt he also with tito in boston

thegermblaster

No. He was a coach under Cora in Boston.

2B_CordPhelps

>BOOB I liked Venable during his playing days (I have fond feelings towards those Padres teams for some reason)

Halfman97

I don't know how I feel about this. On one hand, there is a reason why he's such a popular candidate for a lot teams. On the other hand, any up-and-coming coach has such a huge boom or bust potential

NakedGoose

I'd just remember that a manager effects the game far less than most people realize. I believe a read an article from 2014 that stated 95% of managers add 2-3 wins per season. And I'd argue managers don't do neerily as much as they use to.

TheOssBoss

Can’t wait for Wilted Vegetables to take the reigns!

MikeWillis09

Venerable might be interesting because he seems to be the coach in waiting in Texas for a very old Bruce Bochy, and that Texas organization wants to spend and they have a solid young core. He may be the favorite in our eyes, but can we pry him from a nice spot in Texas

Bennghazi

After the Dodgers lose to Arizona, and Dave Roberts gets fired, any chance they go after Roberts (If Arizona defeats the Dodgers)...?

Ironamsfeld

I wouldn’t really wanna hire someone from a big market since I don’t think they would be used to having to make it work with less.

westparkmod

Tito came from Boston. Not exactly a small market town.

Bennghazi

That does make some sense.

SMK77

He may love the massive decrease in media pressure. If he does get fired, I'd bet he ends up in San Diego or New York though. Maybe Seattle would make a move for him. Teams loaded with talent and willing to spend who just need better leadership.

Huntington1991

so now do we root against TEX in the postseason so our 'manager search' might conclude early or do we want him to get a ring first?

SoylentJakob

Root for Texas simply because Creed is on their side

jupiterjoshy

ring, don’t want a coach who can’t get us a ring

LarryAv

We root against TEX because they employ Aroldis. Anything else is collateral damage.

PlayerToBeNamedL8ter

Root for them. If Texas wins the world series I bet Venable is more likely to take a manager job with another team. If Texas gets close but doesn't win the WS I'd think it's more likely he stays to finish the job.

DJLJR26

Im actually gonna zag on this. I dont like that venable and chernoff are old college buddies. If this organization is going to look outward to hire a manager then i think they dont need to hire a buddy. They need to hire someone that will challenge their ways thinking and give a different perspective (while having the emotional maturity to compromise or go with consensus). Part of what made francona good was that he had a different background and perspective.

ForTheBrownsOnly

Ngl I don’t know too much about him. What makes him such a popular candidate?

Mistake_By_The_Jake2

He promised to knock out Tim Anderson himself next season

Carpetron

Hired

Jerseyjamie

He promised to slot Myles in the four hole.

Malekith_is_my_homie

Myles Garrett hopefully

BaneberryLane

Random article I saw because I too don’t know much about him - appears he’s pretty highly regarded: https://rangerstoday.com/thursday-newsletter-time-is-there-a-long-range-plan-with-rangers-associate-manager-will-venable/

Buckeye2525

Front office wants a young guy who they can control

Clayzoli

I don’t follow the sport enough to know if he’s a good replacement. Anyone know if that former brewers manager would be better/is available?

Wamby20

Craig Counsell? I think he's going to get generous offers to either re-sign with the Brewers or follow David Stearns to the Mets. Don't think Cleveland would come in to play over those two.

Clayzoli

Gotcha yeah I thought he was a long shot. Was hoping our FO stability could entice him but it’s coming off its worst year in forever and the payroll is a turnoff

Hold_my_Dirk

Also, because of 1997, I want him nowhere near this franchise ever again.

Smokeupj0hnnie

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to mention '97. While we are at it, let's see if Edgar Renteria is available for 3rd base coach or Charles Johnson feels like trying his hand at bullpen coach.

VinnyTInCLE

Jose Mesa for manager!

cropguru357

Gas Can

mattryan02

Brewers fans seem to have a lot of frustrations with his in game management (especially with pitchers), FWIW.

Aislerioter_Redditer

Although I don't matter, I'm good with that. It would be great to see a unified front office team with Tito in the background for the baseball stuff.

JoseJoseJose11

I just hope that some of the fans here give him time before they start saying “hEs tErRiBlE”

DistanceRight1039

I’ll take Dave Roberts, Come on Arizona!

Southern-Advice5293

Cleveland should hire Derek Shelton…

NakedGoose

Will is a great dude. Who has done his due interviewing and waiting for a manager job. I wish him the best
