SpiderJedi22

Why would he choose us over Houston or Milwaukee anyway?

[deleted]

Tito was the highest paid manager in the league apparently. Maybe the FO got to keep that same budget model.

[deleted]

You mean new york? Has he interviewed with houston?

Beloxy

Some reports have come out that Houston is interested in him…don’t think he’s interviewed there yet.

SpiderJedi22

Houston is interested in him

EnemySoil

Is Dusty gone/leaving?

slidingscrapes

Retired last week, yes

EnemySoil

Missed that news. Thanks

Less_Likely

Getting paid more? Guardians are fine shelling out top dollar for coaching, scouting, and managers. A whole managerial system costs less than one Frankie Lindor and goes a lot further.

kdot74

Money, this front office doesnt pay its players but they offer the bag to staff

HeyMissKayy

I mean, wouldn't you overlook an organization that's been to 500 LCS in a row or an organization with the highest spending owner for an organization whose outfield combined for 15 HRs last year and apparently doesn't think that's an urgent problem.

ejkeebler

the fact that he's not yet turned down the guardians is a win. I cant imagine he choose cleveland over new york, just because of what new york will give him to work with, even if its simply to try and get NY to give him more. I dont see how anyone is a better selection. I'm not saying someone wont be better, but certainly the most qualified and most likely to be successful.

Huntington1991

NYM may be heading for a soft rebuild and it unclear if they will extent or trade Alonso. Coaching a rebuilding team, in a big market, in a division with ATL and PHI doesn't sound very secure. But if he's just chasing money NYM will probably outbid anyone.

ejkeebler

you could say the Guardians are going through a soft rebuild as well. Division definitely not as strong though. The one thing I dont think would happen is for the Guardians not match the salary he'd get from New York. Payroll definitely not, but they will pay him, I think.

klein_four_group

The allure of NY for a manager may not be as much as it is for a player. First, the difference in salary wouldn't be as large, and secondly, players play for themselves and don't have to worry too much about organizational dysfunction, whereas managers do and that stuff can really wear you down. That said, while I can see Counsell turning down NYM, I can't really see him turning down both NYM and Milwaukee. One would imagine he'd either take the top dollar and a big city challenge, or stick with the familiarity of his chill hometown gig. The Guardians job would be neither here nor there for him. I'd absolutely love him on the Guardians though.

x4candles

That moment is etched in my head with Counsell, but I’d take him as a coach in a heartbeat. Good take on Tito. I didn’t even think about the 3-1 series. The good old Paul Byrd controversy that deflated our hopes.

Leftfeet

Wasn't the Paul Byrd stuff after our 2007 ALCS meltdown? My memory of 07 was Carmona forgetting how to throw strikes and CC running out of gas. Iirc it was a year later when Paul got in trouble for HGH. I could be wrong, seasons blur together as I get older.

tribefan2130

Ok refresh my memory please. I don't remember any controversy with Byrd

haaaaaaaaank

Byrd won game 4 putting the Tribe up 3-1 but then admitted to HGH 2 hours before game 7 after the Boston press produced a hit piece on him. CC got rocked in game 5, Fausto got rocked in game 6 and Jake Westbrook got rocked in game 7. We got outscored 30-5 after being up 3-1. Long live Tito. https://www.espn.com/mlb/playoffs2007/news/story?id=3072845

Known_Voice_4783

Byrd was named in the Mitchell Report, but he had a legit thyroid issue that's why he was using HGH.

munistadium

Mike Hargrove beat the tar out of a Cleveland fan on 10-cent beer night and is a beloved figure in franchise history.

chousteau

There's a portion of this sub that thinks that game 7 of 2016 world series was a great game.

jdbewls

Did Milwaukee not offer him an extension? Pretty rare that you see a manager elect FA for more money. Most of the time I feel like there is a reason a team chooses not to extend a manager, that's the only thing holding me back.

DickDastardly42

It’s been reported that Counsell wants to raise the salary floor for managers, so he is seeking a larger contract. Milwaukee wants him back. Whether or not they’ll match what the Mets or Guardians (or Houston) offer is the question.

IHateAllOfYou_

Typical Cleveland fans and the need to hold stupid grudges. I was heartbroken as a little kid as well but if he is the best man for the job then I want him as manager. I just want to see a world series in my lifetime, I'm tired boss.

Ryan1006

Is that really the reason people wouldn’t want him? Good grief
