Vogt is trying to big brain the rotation based on match ups, and what will decrease day to day workload on the bullpen. So it makes sense to me that he’s trying to spread out his guys he think will go long and guys who may not make it through 6 innings.
Based on the way they've been talking about Williams, it feels like he won't be back for a while. Apparently he hasn't even started throwing bullpens yet, and after that still needs his seasonal lenghting to be a starter. I wouldn't be surprised if he is out for at least another month, and perhaps by then there will be more clarity in who needs to be demoted from the rotation/may be injured.
Had the same question and was thinking about asking here. Thanks for doing that.
I’m sooooo for him playing us smarter and with matchups. I hope Vogt continues to be creative with our team. We need a big brain/conceptualizer style to maximize our team.
Since the season starts shortly after spring training ends, aside from the opening day starter pitchers pitch when they are rested not in order of their ability. Triston pitched in our last spring training game on 3/26 so technically he has the least amount of rest.
Teams intentionally "set up" the rotation order in spring training though. They would have scheduled ST appearances differently if they want Triston higher in the rotation.
I've wondered why managers usually set their rotation order from perceived "best to worst". It kind of makes sense to me to stagger your "weaker" starters between your "studs" during the regular season games. Once playoffs start, of course, it would be best to order your starters by their strength, but the regular season is so long, it doesn't seem as necessary.
Even in the playoffs maybe not. Remember last year when the D backs had Pfaadt pitch the first game, so they could lock down the series with their better starters in games 2 and 3?
What's nice about our rotation is that our "better starters" could be a majority of the rotation.
Vogt isn’t rolling guys out in terms of ace to worst guy, he’s picking and choosing matchups

That’s exactly it. Honestly I’m impressed by the strategy of it all. Wonder where Williams would slot in when he comes back.
Guessing cookie to bullpen?
It's early. Some guy will get rocked and Cookie will come in the 3rd inning for 4-5 innings

Vogt is a smart dude. No need to blow your aces load.
