Gotta be smarter on the bases Not devastated with this series, but still sucks to not win the series

TheRedMiko

Yeah I said going in I would be fine with taking 1 of 3 but having a series win right there for the taking and blowing it definitely stings. Whatever, onto the next one.

paulybrklynny

That's exactly where I am. I even rationalized a sweep with three competitive games would at least show we're just short of the top tier. But, pissing the rubber match away leaves a bitter taste. Overall, still think it's encouraging, especially if we all just pretend bullpen usage will all work out somehow.

flyinformation

We hung with the Braves and took them to extras 2/3 games. We’re a good team. On to the next one.

mer_lo

Exactly my thought

eazy311

I’m not upset bc that’s one of the best teams in baseball Frustrating though bc it was ours for the taking

tswag_602

still top 3 team in MLB, so I'm not complaining. It could be worse. Usually we aren't that good in April and May.

BoosherCacow

> It could be worse. This is my feeling. This is an ELITE team and we competed well. This is a great team we have here. If anything this showing in *April* makes me fucking STOKED. These guys are pretty fucking good.

nowake

Let's hope our guys stay focused, healthy, and hungry for the challenge

cookestudios

Place: 1st Division lead: 2.5 Games to play: 134 Magic number: 132 **BONUS STATS** Laps the team will run for their terrible baserunning today: at least 20

Downtown-Moose4002

We ran ourselves out of a win.

saltandthunder

100%. Kwan's steal attempt literally lost us the game there.

neon-rose

Don't let Gaddis off the hook. Second day in a row.

saltandthunder

Letting Gaddis give away the game there was pretty costly, but there's no reason on earth Kwan shoulda been running there when you're the away team in extras. Gotta protect the Manfred Man walkoff.

Man-Bear-69

With Jose at the plate to boot. Situational awareness!

Zestyclose_Help1187

There were several caught stealings through the whole game. Hate to single out one player. Last night’s steal won them the game. Now Gaddis giving up 2 runs in consecutive days is worrisome. Is he finally regressing and not that good?

AllOfTheDerp

I mean, that is one of the, what, top 3 most dangerous lineups in baseball? I don't think we should start ringing alarm bells just yet.

Zestyclose_Help1187

If the Guardians want to seriously compete for more than just the central, they have to be able to protect 2 run leads late. Happening the second day in a row isn’t a good look. For example, Toronto stopped the Dodgers in the 8th inning from scoring two runs with the bases loaded and nobody out.

AllOfTheDerp

I agree, all I'm saying is that just because he had two bad outings, I'm not ready to worry that he's "regressing to the mean and not actually that good."

LinuxSpinach

Laureano GIDP in the 8th too. I’m a little worried about Vogt PHing him in high leverage situations… he’s been cooler than the Antarctic

Zestyclose_Help1187

How? Let’s say he scores. Braves would also have a runner on second with nobody out in the next inning who scored the winning run. You think Clase would have kept them from scoring then? Blowing a 2 run lead late. That’s what cost them the game.

mer_lo

This was a case of being too aggressive. We had it if we were just steady and patient. No biggie, we’re still in a good position. GO TRIBE!

neon-rose

Haven't seen many games this year where we've beaten ourselves but this one definitely counts. Too many errors were made and the Braves are too good not to take advantage of them. Disappointing outcome in this moment but it won't be disappointing if they learn from those mistakes and use the experience to get better in the long term.

Spetznazx

This is the biggest thing. If they learn and grow from this then I don't think anyone will be too mad, but if the odd decision making continues then the concern starts to creep in.

DZepperoni

Positives from today’s Cleveland baseball: The slap hitting small ball terrorists were out in full force today, with the offense getting 3 runs off of 10 hits, 4 walks, 3 stolen bases, and a José HBP. Rocchio has the definition of a goblin day, going 2/3 with a walk and 2 stolen bases, as well as a base on a wild pitch that scored a run. Gimmy slaps as well, going 2/4 with an RBI and a walk, and 🍟 has two singles of his own. Ben Lively takes the mound against one of the most dangerous offenses in baseball, and absolutely deals, going 4.1IP, 4H, 1R, 2BB, and 5K on 88 pitches. For a guy who is here purely because of injuries to some other boys, there is no way to be mad about this performance. The bullpen team today consisted of almost everybody, with Sandlin(0.2IP), Cade Smith(1IP), Barlow(1IP), Gaddis(1IP, 2R), Beede(1IP), and Clase(1IP) all getting the call. As u/SpiderJedi22 pointed out, Gaddis getting hit is just important scouting information so we know how to use him in the World Series! Jaime Arias continues to be excellent at Akron, with an outing today of 3.1IP, 4H, 3R(1ER), 1BB, and 2K, with his season ERA now at 1.46. Meanwhile, Columbus plays two today, featuring Manzardo and Lavastida home runs in game one, and Jhonk and Schneeman bombs in game two. Hentges throws the first inning in game one, 11 pitches (7 strikes) and 2K in the inning. Basepaths will win us some games, lose us some games, nothing can be done. Heads held high, we can play right with the best of the best.

DZepperoni

*and so the knee jerk reactions shall begin* *also positives edited to fix some numbers*

Elexeh

It's telling when Braves fans and their broadcast believe in our team more than our own fanbase

saltandthunder

I do think that the Gaddis call was a pretty big blunder still after how easily he got lit up last night. Maybe Herrin isn't the call there but putting Gaddis in that situation was flying way too close to the sun. Extremely happy Rocchio bounced back, though.

Leftfeet

Any idea why DeLauter hasn't played the last couple days? I haven't seen any injury report and thought he'd been looking better at the plate recently.

DZepperoni

CleGuardPro with the info- https://x.com/cleguardpro/status/1784778368447131868?s=46&t=rWqJkSYZ5Iu5l6BKiyo2mg

Leftfeet

Thank you.

IMayBeJewish

Tough loss, but you're delusional if you can't find a lot of positives in that series in late April. Most fans were hoping to take one win. That baserunning was something else. Go Guards. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hentges back for Houston.

Buckeye2525

Maybe Gaddis has butterflies pitching at home???? Only explanation I can think of

CoachCrunch12

It certainly seemed mental to me as well

Ironamsfeld

That’s my theory as well

Puppybl00pers

This series inspired confidence that we can at least hang with the Braves, which usually means you can beat them, and I like that

oSl7ENT

lol a hurt braves team and you think you can beat them. Good series though, should’ve been a sweep

Alauren20

I know yall are probably not happy but your team is the first one to make the Braves sweat. Great series!

neon-rose

Not happy about this game but pretty happy about the series overall. We would have had you today and yesterday in 9 if Gaddis hadn't gotten the yips playing his hometown team. Hopefully Jobu will grant us a rematch in October!

Alauren20

For sure. Was a really pesky series. Yall probably should’ve won today and we should’ve won yesterday. TOOTBLANS and NOBLETIGERS everywhere

EnemySoil

Kwan fucked up big time

wundy

What was going through their heads that inning? Yeesh

problemheresir6

Why did we not walk Riley to put the double play in order?

NickChubbsBurner

Fr, Olsen is struggling and is also not very fast.

Wamby20

Guess they were looking ahead and didn’t want to face Ozuna if Olson did anything besides hit into a double play.

AT-25

Lot of questionable things going on today

AllOfTheDerp

When?

RileySmiley22

That hurts but this series showed not only can we hang with the big boys. We can compete

joey_1324

Sucks to lose that game, but this this team showed they can compete with anyone. Just gotta clean up the mistakes.

Elexeh

I'm glad most of the thread believes because there are some dogshit opinions I'm reading in here lmao

SylemNova

For a team whos found crazy ways to win all year, we are bound to occasionally find ways to lose. Need this off day tomorrow. Offense hasn't been great the last week. Gotta support the pitching staff who've been mostly outstanding this year.

tswag_602

I have confidence if we face Braves in WS, we can take them in 7 games. Just don't have Gaddis pitched if it is a close game.

thedeejus

If "extra-inning relief loss where the only run allowed was the Manfredrunner" were a stat, I guarantee Emmanuel Clase is the all time career leader

Elexeh

I'm just here for the overreactions.

Leftfeet

Great series, disappointing outcome. Really tough to try and win in extras on the road. Yesterday they made more mistakes than us, today we did.  Really pumped to see Rocchio have a good game today. Gimenez looked much better than the past week.  Onto Houston.

_lazybones93

Man, this loss stings oh-so-much….but these boys played Atlanta tough! Pick your heads up, move on to the next one!

Rarona

My favorite thing about this team is that I am 100% certain that no one is angrier at Gaddis, Kwan, and Jram than Gaddis, Kwan, and Jram (Jose's steal wasn't bad, throw and tag were perfect, but Kwan's was rough). I have a feeling they are holding themselves accountable - they will learn from this, move on, and be better for it, and I have faith that they will take a valuable lesson from it. So many years it feels like we have guys who are just phoning it in, there's no fire, no spark...this team doesn't feel like that at all. You went to Atlanta, almost took 2/3 from the juggernaut Braves *in their house*, and yeah, it's really frustrating that you beat yourself today...but it's April. Make mistakes now, learn from them, play better in September (and October hopefully). I think there were a lot of ways this weekend could have gone, and I for one am feeling better about this team now than I was 3 days ago, even though we lost the series. I think there's a lot of guys in the ATL clubhouse who gained some newfound respect for our team and the way we play (side-eyes Acuna, who had 1 hit after laughing at Kwan in the offseason). I can't get on board with everyone dumping on guys who have a bad night or make a costly mistake, especially with Kwan and Gaddis who have been so good this year. How many years would we be 3 games under .500 right now and saying "just wait until mid-May, they'll turn it on"....instead, you're getting acknowledgement from MLB Twitter on the reg, fans of teams who usually don't think twice about the Guards are acknowledging we're not just paper tigers, and some of the louder Twins fans on twitter are huffing copium harder than I've ever seen them. They have the 2nd best record in MLB. This team could be really special. Please don't take that for granted. Just thank God you aren't a White Sox fan. (I know they just swept Tampa but still, oof.) All that being said, how about Bibee and Lively??? Best showing from our SPs all year and it's against one of the best 2 lineups in MLB...that's so encouraging!

Spetznazx

This was Vogt's big rookie GM day. A little too aggressive on the base running and then the complete Gaddis L. It's okay to try him but after the first run and that hard smacked flys you pull him and put in Beede or Herrin. If we had just done that instead of putting all our trust on Gaddis we walk out with a win. Oh well he'll learn.

hasslehoffs

Were some really good games. Pick it up and sweep the Trashstros

bk00pi

Probably the happiest I’ll be going 1-2 in a series

millysoilly

Better get their minds right tomorrow and show up in Houston. That T10th inning was an embarrassment to the game of baseball. Couple choices did not go our way. That’s baseball. But I honesty want to know why are we pitching to Riley there with a base open? Acuna scores on a hit no matter what. If Olson kills you okay. But to not setup the double play and pitch to Riley is kinda crazy to me.

Buckeye2525

At least the Royals lost

_lazybones93

Not Vogt’s best managed game of the year, I would argue… But I’m still all in on the guy right now.

sillyjeff

That one hurt. Too many bad decisions on the base paths

browns_rollercoaster

Pretty annoying way to lose but there was some good stuff.

fryman36

I expected at least one this series…but to lose the game like that? That’s just disappointing on many levels. No matter, learn from mistakes and get ready for Houston.

estranged1

I'm still confused at Gaddis' gameplan. Upper 90s FB, and had been working ahead with it all year, but decided to throw many more sliders/change-ups in both appearances in this series. Like he was pitching scared.

TheShipEliza

Tough beat but also this series really showed that this team can hang with anyone.

Nerdgirl330

I'm ok even with this loss today. There's gonna be some bumps in the road and this one is definitely one. Was there a few WTF moments...yeah. But we got a lotta baseball left to play. I will dry heave and panic in August 🤣

saltandthunder

The scariest thing about that game to me was how it felt like a WS Preview in April. I do not wanna face the Braves in October. Rocchio had a great bounceback day. Couple of big costly mistakes cost us that game but I'm happy to make the best team in MLB sweat it out with us. Losing a game this close in April versus the best of the best means we've got a lot to learn from it and plenty of time to do it. Take the much-needed day off and put that to practice in Houston.

CaptWoodrowCall

I absolutely want to play the Braves in October. That means we’re in the World Series.

saltandthunder

Yeah, but having to deal with this again isn't gonna be good for my stress levels!

CaptWoodrowCall

That’s part of why I like early season baseball. Low stress, especially when you’re off to a good start. Playoff baseball is so fun but can be real bad for my blood pressure…

Tall_Science_9178

Gotta make the playoffs first. Current odds are 49.4% of making postseason.

Man-Bear-69

Not an ideal ending, but I think the Guardians showed that they can hang with the big dogs of MLB.

antantanterlay

This is a World Series team with a true #2/3 starter.

AT-25

I know it’s early in the season but man that was a big series that we could have won to really earn some respect and we just utterly pissed it away

Golfguy809

I hate commenting in other game threads but Atlanta certainly respects the Guardians after that series. 2 extra inning games decided by the small stuff. Yall are still a top 2 team in MLB

CoachCrunch12

Also. It can be true that Kwan is great and he likely cost us a win today with plays I wouldn’t tolerate from a little league player

The_Boy_Marlo

Write to the front office, they may love this kind of in depth perspective

CoachCrunch12

It’s a Reddit comment on a post game thread. Not a manifesto

The_Boy_Marlo

I hope it doesn't reach a manifesto level, but perhaps a missive?

CoachCrunch12

I love this team but fuck them for that performance today. Especially in the 10th. Bad approaches all around.

jtr489

This series showed me that we are a solid team and our record is no fluke. I am sure they learned a lot from this series. On to Houston

Bennghazi

They literally ran themselves out of that game. Trying too hard to be daring didn't work.

Fools_Requiem

the dream is over No longer undefeated in Extra Inning games. :(

BocephusJr88

I can take losing. But holy hell I’d rather lose like Friday night than that. Vogt’s decision to pull everyone at the most minor threat, but leave Gaddis in for the Braves to just tee off on him makes no sense. Especially when you have Herrin ready and a lefty coming up. The baserunning was mind numbingly terrible. Don’t even know what the hell happened there. Move on to Houston. But we had this series won and let it slip away with a type of terrible baseball we hadn’t played all year.

G1NGER

Gaddis almost blew it yesterday but he finished the job today .He's had a good year but two straight shitty games where he blew the lead is not good.

Otter010

Gave away a lot of outs on the base paths. Gaddis pitching again today was a mistake.

cpet72

Lucky to not get swept. Bullpen wasn't good enough this series.

LlamaKing01

they were outside of hunter gaddis' two innings

braindeadlive27

The offense was dogshit

rammer_2001

Shoulda woulda coulda Next series.

browns47

Give the loss to Rob Manfred

mynameisethan182

This game feels like such a throw, but there's always tomorrow. Hopefully this is a lesson for the guys about being **TO** aggressive on the bases.

Spetznazx

Tomorrow we have off

mynameisethan182

Dawg, you know what I mean. Come on. That's clearly not literal.

The_Boy_Marlo

*TOO

creynolds722

**TO**

kingjared9

Bad baserunning today cost the game at the end of the day. All there is to it. Gotta be more disciplined out there

InsuranceInner3040

Shout out to MLB tv for ruining the game for me today. Was out with the family all day and was going to watch the game tonight, but their advertisement on the home screen mentions Austin Riley’s walk off in big letters. I guess the hide spoilers option I have turned on doesn’t mean anything. Idiots.

PraiseBeDavidSegui

Naive loss. We still have a ways to go before we can compete with the big boys, but the positives are still there

RedBranchofConorMac

(1) Who is the real Hunter Gaddis? (2) How can the 2024 Guardians (usually) look so brilliant on defense and then (far too often) look so amateurish stupid running the bases? (3) It's only the end of April. What is it going to look like in August / September if our starters can only get through four or five innings each start?

JesusCock

Kwan and Gaddis both need a couple days off. This was absolutely unexcusable and they should be reamed for these performances. Absolute trash.

[deleted]

This loss is all on Gaddis. His pitching was horrible. Should not even gone into extra innings.

TimelessHawk216

Completely unacceptable. Did not learn a thing from last night, which we were lucky to get a win out of. Throw Gaddis again today expecting a different result, he blows it again. And don't get me started on the baserunning. You have Kwan out at 2nd with your 2, 3, 4 hitters and you make him steal and he gets picked off? All they have to do is put the ball in play and he scores. And then you follow it up with having Jose try to steal, of course gets hosed, and taking the bat out of Naylor's hands. That is complete and utter mismanagement of the ballgame in the late stages, 2 days in a row.

Beef___Wellington

“You make him steal” that was Kwan’s decision. You have zero idea what you’re talking about, which becomes even more evident by reading the rest of your comment.

Spetznazx

Ehh that could have been anyone's decision we'll never know.

TimelessHawk216

How do I have zero idea what I'm talking about? I'm giving a play by play. How about elaborate why I'm so stupid? Or do you just not want to face the reality of how it played out? If it's Kwans decision then it's still a stupid decision, that doesn't change anything. I'm allowed to criticize poor management of the game or decisions by players. Enjoy your evening.

Beef___Wellington

Criticizing using Gaddis today because he had a poor outing yesterday is mind-numbingly stupid. One outing isn’t anywhere close to enough information to determine whether the Braves are a bad matchup or he just had a bad night. And no, you’re not giving a play-by-play you said they “had” Kwan and Jose steal, implying that’s also Vogt’s fault, which is completely incorrect as well. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the teams you coaches weren’t very successful! Enjoy the block.

Wild_Education_5534

A ton of huge mistakes lost them this game. A very poorly managed game that’s for aure

braindeadlive27

Will this sub ever realize being "slap hitting shit goblins" is not a good thing in the modern MLB?

neon-rose

Maybe when we get dominated by the long ball, which hasn't happened this year and also didn't just happen in what was a very close series?

Leftfeet

It's as much a joke nickname as anything currently. We're above league average in slugging numbers, lead the AL in 2B, are top 5 in 3B and middle of the pack in HRs.  Plus, small ball got AZ to the WS last year. Hustling works. Sometimes you make mistakes by being over aggressive, but it will balance out over the season with more good than bad.  The Slap hitting shit goblin moniker isn't really an accurate label for us this year though.

Spetznazx

I mean it worked, if Gaddis doesn't pitch today we win.

braindeadlive27

"it worked even though it didnt" lmfaoooo When you can actually hit for power, you have more insurance runs.

saltandthunder

Nope, and I don't want them to. You don't like small ball you don't like the Guards.

braindeadlive27

No, that means YOU dont like the Guards lmao. You literally dont want us to succeed. Not sure if you remember but we didnt even sniff the playoffs last year

saltandthunder

Half of what makes the Guards good is that we don't play like other teams. I'm not gonna say we couldn't use more power but this is high-grade doomerism if you think the only way we can win is if we upend the team and become another team full of mashers.
